From modest beginnings in 1880, the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania is now one of the largest Yacht Clubs in Australia. It has a proud tradition of competitiveness on the water and an equally strong tradition of hospitality for members and visitors at the Clubhouse. We offer superb facilities for yachts and their crew whom all share the experiences we provide during International, National and Local events.

We aim to promote and encourage yacht racing and yachting events in Tasmania. Whether an experienced sailor or one setting foot on a yacht for the first time, we foster opportunities for young Australians, which would not be possible without the generous support of our Sponsors and dedicated Volunteers.

The Club has a rich history and is proudly associated with events and activities relating to keel and motorboat cruising.

of know-how in running events and can draw from its volunteers and professional

race officers to ensure such events run at an

International level.


The Showdown, an exciting sailing regatta now in its seventh year established as one of Tasmania’s most exhilarating annual sailing events. Based at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and sailed on the broad waters of the River Derwent, the Showdown is a two-day event for Off the Beach and Long Race for High Performance and Cruising Yachts. The River Derwent becomes a showcase of sailing talent during this weekend, with an extraordinary fleet of more than 200 off-the-beach sailors contesting up to eight races in conditions that have varied from just 5 knots to a stiff sea breeze kicking in at 18 knots. Without question, The Showdown Regatta has been a resounding success for the organisers; The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, the many volunteers who conduct the racing, and the sailors who come from all over the State to compete in the off-the-beach and keelboat classes. The late spring weather can provide excellent conditions for racing during Saturday and Sunday. The media has also recognised the significance of sailing as an important participant sport in Tasmania, with extensive newspaper, television, radio and internet coverage over the weekend.

The Derwent is a sea of sail over the weekend, with some spectacular sailing from the Formula Sailboards and those extraordinary Moth foilers, as well as from the big fleets of Lasers, Sabots, International Cadets and Mirror dinghies.

OFFSHORE NIGHT RACES The Ultimate Sailing endurance challenge, the Maria Island and Bruny Island attracting significant media coverage. The category two races push boats and crew to the limit with testing weather patterns and confronting navigational challenges. The Maria Island Race held on the third Friday of November and Bruny Island Race held on the first Saturday of February. Book a catered cruise to watch the start and follow down the river to experience early tactics of Skipper and Crews.

COMBINED CLUBS’ LONG RACE SERIES

Competitive Sailors from the combined Clubs will enter the Long Race Series with RYCT, scheduled to sail the Channel Race on 9 October 2016, 3 November 2016 and 18 March 2017. This spectacular event will take on all the challenges Mother Nature can offer in the unpredictable River and Channel. Book a catered cruise to watch the start. The events are well covered by local media and local cruises to watch the start, which always proves to be very exciting.

2017 WINTER RACE SERIES

Five Races form the RYCT Winter Pennant. The unpredictable winter winds can set great challenges for Skipper and Crew. Exciting racing, stretching the best of crew skills.
