Now, they have again been asked to vacate a settlement. As many as 249 Gujjar families face eviction from Rakh Barotian in Vijay- pur, Jammu, where they have been living since 1999 on state land, which many believe has deliberately been chosen for building an AIIMS hospital. By 1980, many Gujjar families permanently settled in border villages of Ballad, Chajwal, Chak Parthyal, Kajayal Kurada in Ramghar area of Samba district. However, in the early 80s, the government settled refu- gees from Pakistan in their villages after asking them to vacate the lands. “The government had then promised us suitable cash compensation and adequate land. That is why we moved to another part of Ramgarh, near the Interna- tional Border,” the Gujjars recall. However, after Kargil war broke out in 1999, the army asked the Gujjars to vacate the villages. The residents said that barring clothes they had on, they could take nothing along during the migration. The incumbent president Farooq Abdullah may take the role of the party patron. The source said that the National Conference is hold- ing the delegates’ convention after more than one-and-a- half decade here on October 29. The program, likely to be held at Indoor Stadium, would see partici- pation of delegates from across Jammu and Kashmir. As per its consti- tution, the National Conference has already held elections to different positions includ- ing block, zonal, district and provincial presidents. But the election to the top posi- tion of the president is yet to be conducted. “It will be a mega event where the party leaders will deliberate upon the prevailing situation in J&K and also discuss ways to strengthen the party at grassroots. Masked gunmen loot bank in Bijbehara, police blame militants KHALID GUL Anantnag, Oct 12: Masked gunmen on Thursday looted a bank in Bijbehara area of Anantnag district and decamped with around Rs 5 lakh, police said. “Three to four gunmen barged into the J&K bank branch at Marhama village at Sangam Bijbehara this afternoon and ran away with cash,” a police offi- cial said. A bank official said the gunmen looted Rs 5,00,889. Soon after the incident, the government forces cordoned off the area and launched searches to nab the gunmen. The braid chopping incident in Bata- maloo made a large number of men and women hit the streets in protest, a wit- ness said. People also took to streets at Palapora Noorbagh against a braid cutting incident in the area, another witness said. In Nowgam, the police resorted to tear- gas shelling to disperse the protesters who were demanding action against the braid choppers, reports said. SHOWKAT DAR Pulwama, Oct 12: Two girls sustained injuries after unknown persons lobbed a grenade towards a beauty parlour in Pulwama district on Thursday. A witness said that the device exploded outside the beauty parlour with a bang, causing minor injuries to two girls. The injured girls were treated at district hospi- tal Pulwama. The blast created panic in the town, with people seen running for safety, the witness said. Senior superinten - dent of police Pulwama Chaudhary Muhammad Aslam said that two girls sustained minor splinter injuries in the attack. “Beauty parlour was the target,” he said.
