Dear Music Lovers:

Welcome to the RSO’s Diamond Anniversary Season. I invite you to join our growing audience and experience all that a modern symphony orchestra can be. We’ll celebrate the wonderful versatility of the RSO “Three Score”—through symphonic masterworks, fun pops events, and new concerts at new destinations.

You’ll hear the excitement and inspiration of large, symphonic masterworks performed with passion and commitment by more than 80 musicians and 150 singers at our Concert Hall Masterworks. These concerts give you the timeless experience of a symphony concert, featuring grand works from masters like Schubert, Prokofiev, Richard Strauss, Sibelius, Brahms and more, performed at the Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre and Shaftman Performance Hall at Jefferson Center.

New this season, our innovative and accessible one-hour Destination Concerts will take you (and our talented RSO musicians) to the heart of Virginia’s Music City, downtown Roanoke. These concerts are performed in downtown venues including Mill Mountain Theatre’s Trinkle Main Stage in the newly renovated Center in the Square building. I know you will love the RSO’s virtuosity “up close and classical” with the music of Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi, among many others, in these intimate and vibrant settings. And that’s not all: the RSO continues to connect to more audiences through our successful Picnic at the Pops series. Our Pops lineup begins with superstar vocalist and keyboard player Michael McDonald (formerly of the Doobie Brothers) and the RSO. Our new Holiday Pops will feature the brilliant and dazzling Broadway vocalist Rosena Hill with large chorus and orchestra. Our third Pops concert comes to you truly by popular audience demand in a special program—The Music of Pink Floyd. Don’t miss the unique social flavor and fun of RSO Pops this season!

Take a look inside. You’ll find symphonic, choral, and pops programs; new locations, greater accessibility, value, and vital education programs. The choice is yours, and whatever you choose, secure your place and become a part of RSO history—the beginning of 60 more great years. Happy 60th, RSO. We’ll see you soon at our Diamond Anniversary Season.

Sincerely,

David Stewart Wiley David Stewart Wiley, Music DirectorRoanoke Symphony Orchestra

The RSO's first performance took place at Jefferson High School in 1953. We open this “homecoming” program with the triumphant and magical horn calls from Weber's Der Freischütz. Rising young star Vijay Venkatesh makes his RSO debut in Liszt’s grand and expressive first piano concerto. Cascades of brass, romantic Finnish melodies, and a triumphant finale conclude the second symphony of Sibelius and this second Concert Hall Masterworks program.

We end our Concert Hall Masterworks with two of the most recognized and beloved symphonies—Schubert’s two-movement “Unfinished” classic and Brahms’ great first symphony. An affirmation of the symphonic form, and a showcase for symphony musicians, we end our Diamond Anniversary season, symphonic style!
