Annotated Bibliography of Grade 1-8 Science Resources which Reflect the Diversity of the Ontario Classroom

Purpose of the Bibliography: The purpose of this document is to develop an annotated bibliography of resources that represented the diversity of the Ontario science classroom.

Many teachers consult different resources when developing their lesson plans and teaching their classes. However, not many of these resources cater to all students, especially to visible minorities. We were especially concerned about students from groups that have traditionally been under-served or under-represented in science and technology. As a result, we have compiled a list of resources, such as websites, books, journal articles, etc, that would accomplish this goal.

We hope elementary teachers will refer to our bibliography when they develop and/or teach their classes. High school teachers will also find this bibliography useful in developing their lesson plan, especially the section on science and ethics, since many of the resources are generally applicable. Common Questions about the Bibliography: 1. How can the bibliography be used?

Teachers can use this bibliography in multiple ways. For example, they can locate the resources and then use them to prepare their lesson plans. Another possibility is for the students to use the bibliography to locate the resources and then explore each topic. Some resources include ideas for lesson plans or activities. 2. Who is represented in the bibliography? Some of the groups that have been represented in this bibliography include: people who are Aboriginal, African, Chinese, females, Hispanic, Latin, South Asian, or living with a disability. 3. How is the bibliography organized? We organized the bibliography using the strands of the Ontario Science Curriculum for grades one to eight. A copy of the strands has been provided below. This chart will help you navigate through the bibliography. We also added a section called “Science and Ethics” at the end of the bibliography. This section looks at some of the controversial issues in science. We recommend that teachers who teach higher level classes consider using these resources.

Furthermore, while looking for these resources, we found many resources that represent the different countries of the world. We also found many resources that had a Canadian context to them. Consequently, we placed a Canadian flag in the left hand margin to notify teachers of these Canadian materials. Teachers who wish to locate these resources can do so easily by looking for the Canadian flag. Although many of the resources are from the US, they are still useful in Ontario classrooms. Additionally, most of the resources we located were websites. As a result, we decided to make the other materials, such as books and journal articles, stand out by placing a letter in the left hand margin. For example, a “B” stands for a book, and a “J” stands for a journal article.

Page 3: RUNNING HEAD: Annotated Bibliography...RUNNING HEAD: Annotated Bibliography Annotated Bibliography of Grade 1-8 Science Resources which Reflect the Diversity of the Ontario Classroom

4. What are some limitations of the bibliography? For some of the strands, we had difficulties locating resources that we thought teachers could use. As a result, teachers who use the bibliography will realize that some of the strands do not have any or just a few resources listed under certain strands. Additional Resources:

Furthermore, we would be happy to receive suggestions of other resources to add to this list. Please send these to Dr. John Percy at [email protected] The Ontario Science Curriculum (Grades 1-8):
