Running Start Apprenticeships February – July 2011 Overview Running Start offers two exciting apprenticeships to help young professionals develop their skills and experience in the fields of new media and events planning. These apprenticeships are ideal for a young person interested in nonprofit work who wants experience building their portfolio of experience in these specific fields. Each apprentice will be Running Start’s lead contact for new media and events planning. Timeframe The apprentice would be required to work full time (Monday – Friday) from February 1 st July 31 st . Both Apprentices are required to work from the Running Start office based near Washington, DC. Both apprentices need to provide her/his own computer. Compensation The apprentice position will receive a $1,000 per month stipend over the course of the apprenticeship. New Media Apprenticeship The New Media apprentice will design and implement a new media strategy for Running Start. We are seeking an individual who is a young professional and has experience with new media, website editing and maintenance and is comfortable using and editing video and photos. Running Start will build a partnership with an established new media consultant to help guide your decisions and help you develop a strong new media portfolio for Running Start over the course of your apprenticeship. Primary Responsibilities: Develops and implements new media strategy for Running Start that fits the needs and goals of the organization. Serves as Webmaster through WordPress platform including updating blog and news content at the direction of the Running Start staff. Provides website technical support for staff. Manages, maintains and adds new content to Running Start’s social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter. Reviews website content for relevance and timeliness, updating old information Conducts website quality checks and proofing the site to eliminate typos, broken links, and functionality errors.

• Edits  video  feed  and  edits  photos  for  website.  • Develops  Running  Start  photo  archives  database.  

We’re  looking  for  someone  with:  • Knowledge  of  WordPress,  SharePoint  and  web  publishing  • Strong  ability  to  communicate  well  over  the  phone,  via  email,  and  in-­‐person  • Ability  to  complete  tasks  within  assigned  time  frames  • Ability  to  multi-­‐task  • Detail  oriented;  high  degree  of  accuracy  in  all  aspects  of  work  • Ability  to  work  independently  as  necessary  to  achieve  high  performance  • Ability  to  work  effectively  within  teams  • Ability  to  take  accountability  for  work  responsibilities  and  outcomes,  and  for  input  

to  team(s)  • Pro-­‐active  personality  • Website  design  ability  • Strong  writer  • Interest  in  the  mission  and  programs  of  Running  Start

   Events  Planning  Apprenticeship  The  Events  Planning  apprentice  will  be  the  lead  project  manager  for  two  of  Running  Start’s  biggest  events/programs,  the  5th  Annual  Women  to  Watch  Awards  and  the  Young  Women’s  Political  Leadership  Retreat  in  Washington,  DC  (YWPL).      The  Women  to  Watch  Awards,  held  each  spring  in  DC,  celebrates  the  efforts  of  Running  Start  to  inspire  young  women  to  run  for  public  office.  The  event  honors  young  women  leaders  who  represent  the  exceptional  work  in  their  professions.      The  YWPL  program  in  Washington,  DC  introduces  high  school  girls  to  political  leadership.  The  week-­‐long  program  emphasizes  the  importance  of  their  presence  in  politics  by  creating  a  productive  environment  to  help  girls  develop  practical  skills  to  become  strong  leaders.      We  are  seeking  an  individual  who  is  a  young  professional  and  is  familiar  with  planning  and  executing  events.    Experience  working  in  an  office  setting  is  preferable.  Running  Start  will  build  a  partnership  with  a  seasoned  event  planner  to  help  guide  your  decision-­‐making  and  nurture  your  skills.    Primary  Responsibilities:  Women  to  Watch  Awards  –  May  2011  

• Manage  logistics  for  the  Women  to  Watch  Awards  • Serves  as  the  chief  liaison  between  Running  Start  and  all  vendors  and  suppliers  

contracted  for  the  event

• Manage  ticket  sales  and  seating  • Coordinates  and  manages  volunteer  efforts  for  the  event  • Develops  materials  for  the  event  including  invitations  and  event  program  • Works  with  New  Media  Apprentice  to  update  all  website  content  related  to  the  

Women  to  Watch  Awards  • Develops  all  e-­‐communication  to  Running  Start  supporters  for  information  about  

the  event  including  ticket  sales    Young  Women’s  Political  Leadership  Program  –  July  2011  

• Assists  staff  in  reviewing  and  assessing  applications  for  the  program  • Assists  Program  Director  in  obtaining,  maintaining  and  tracking  all  necessary  

documentation  from  participants  • Assists  Program  Director  in  the  organization  of  venues,  speakers,  meals,  and  

transportation  for  the  event  • Coordinates  and  manages  volunteer  efforts  for  the  event  • Assists  staff  in  organizing  all  materials  needed  for  the  program  • Assist  staff  in  the  execution  of  the  program  in  July  

 We’re  looking  for  someone  with:  

• Extensive  computer  skills;  particularly  Microsoft  Word,  PowerPoint,  Excel,  and  Internet  research  

• Strong  ability  to  communicate  well  with  people  on  phone,  email,  and  in-­‐person  • Ability  to  complete  tasks  within  assigned  time  frames  • Ability  to  manage  multiple  tasks,  multiple  goals,  problem  solve  and  prioritize  

assignments  • Ability  to  work  effectively  under  pressure  without  close  supervision  • Promptness,  reliability  and  sound  judgment  required  • Self-­‐motivated  and  goal/deadline  oriented  • Highly  pro-­‐active  • Works  well  in  a  team  small  team  environment  • Excellent  written  and  verbal  communication  skills  • Excellent  proofreading  skills  • Interest  in  the  mission  and  programs  of  Running  Start
