ROCK VALLEY CHILDREN’S CHOIR under the direction of Leah Baskin, is a performing and education choral organization established in 2002 with one small choir on the RVC campus. The program has grown to four separate choruses, “Do-Re-Mi Singers” for grades one through 3; “Music Makers Chorus” for grades 4 through 8; Crescendo (formerly Master Singers) Choir,” an audition-based choir for grades 6 through 8 (detailed descriptions for these in WHIZ KIDS section), and “Encore” for grades 9-12.

The choir has sung in concert with the Rock Valley Chorale, performed at the Coronado Theater, toured at regional libraries and museums, sung for the opening of a Smithsonian Institute exhibition, participated in youth choral festivals, and performed for public and private civic groups in the Rock Valley College tri-county area. In 2006 the Rock Valley Children’s Choir formed a partnership with the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, holding rehersals and concerts at MPAC each semester.

Each week Leah Baskin, the choir’s director brings a variety of learning experiences and styles to the children’s rehearsals. Weekly rehearsals and optional monthly Saturday workshops provide many occasions for children to grow both as singers and as responsible citizens.

Rock Valley Children’s Choir – Do Re Mi(Grades 1-3) No auditions required for this beginning choir for eager third, second and mature first graders. Rehearsals include activities designed to help students become better singers and better musicians. The beginnings of correct vocal technique, ear training games, simple note reading and rhythm reading activities, music games, dancing, and playing simple instruments will be part of our weekly rehearsal (In other words, we have fun while learning!) This choir performs two concerts during each semester along with the older choirs. PREREQUI-SITE: Parents of first graders should contact the director Leah Baskin, at (815) 229-3413 about readiness expectations before registering their children. Bring $10 material fee payable to Mendelssohn at first class. Final concert date: May 18. (On Springbrook at Spring Creek and Alpine intersection)

Rock Valley Children’s Choir – Music Makers(Grades 4-8) No auditions required for Music Makers Choir, just a desire to enjoy making music together with new friends! Each week children learn how to improve their voices through basic vocal techniques, sing new or traditional songs and choral literature. Although the primary emphasis of the class is learning to sing correctly, there are opportuni-ties for dancing and movement, music games, or playing instruments. Sessions are designed to help students become better musicians (and have fun!). Two concerts and other smaller performance options are part of each semester’s presentations. Bring $10 material fee payable to Mendelssohn at first class.Final concert date: May 18.
