• Trademarking of YM overseas

• Increased growth in O/Seas centres

Observations

• Increased demand for RYA commercial

qualifications UK and overseas

• Decrease in boat ownership in 2010 / 11

• Decrease in dinghy and windsurfing 2012

• Steady increase in PB scheme

Shape The Future – What do

customers want?

• More flexible learning options – online, some modular,

less rigidity

• Instructors to cover the syllabus!!!

• Course duration (likely) to be 10 hours

• Independent examiner conducts the exam

i.e. not the same person that instructed

• Online alternative to classroom course available for SRC

centres

RYA will not set a course price or directly sell any courses to

the public. SRC centres retain control of course pricing

and delivery method

Overview of changes

• From January 2014 only Cruising Instructor

Trainers or YMI Trainers will be able to qualify CIs

• Training can take place at any centre recognised

for cruising

• Pre-course theory assessment for candidates

• Courses need to be moderated by second trainer

• Courses need to be approved through Training

Department and will be centrally advertised on

RYA website


Timeline

• Over next 12 months focus is on people

who have delivered significant CI training

• Soft copy of new instructor handbook

available

• From January 2014 ‘selection’ by

recommendation from a YMI course or

update (typically)

your airway from waves and spray.

• Your heart will be working harder, so don’t try

to swim, just relax!

• The effects will be at its worst in the first 30
