I first heard of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) and its member institution, Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), through a

prison ministry that was taking place in my hometown of Mansfield, Ohio. IWU’s soccer team came over to Mansfield when I was a sophomore in high school to minister to the inmates. My family housed players from the team. At that time I met the head men’s soccer coach, who would begin making a tremendous impact on my life. I maintained contact with the coach throughout my junior and senior years of high school as IWU would continue their ministry at the prison playing against the inmates. Although I had offers from several other colleges, I wanted to obtain a degree from an NCCAA Division I Christian college. Because of the impact the IWU team had on me, I chose to attend Indiana Wesleyan University and played on the men’s varsity soccer team. However, this was also a time in my life that I was facing some struggles. I had begun to let my ego get the best of me and began a drug addiction. My drug use began when I was a junior in high school and remained until I was a sophomore at IWU. However, my coach continued to witness to me and be a role model for me to follow. Even though I had always known Christ as my personal Savior, I was a lukewarm Christian at best (“So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” – Revelation 3:16). Not only did my

grades suffer as I began my education at IWU, but so did my physical conditioning level and playing time for the soccer team. My caliber of play was not what it could have been, and I knew it. Most of all, my spiritual conditioning was on the path to eternal destruction. I was not able to give my best – to my education, my team, my coach, my family, nor my God. My sophomore year was one of life-changing proportions. The NCCAA and IWU helped me to turn my life around through the emphasis of Christ through athletics. I played in the NCCAA national soccer tournament at Lee University in Tennessee. The NCCAA had invited Michelle Akers Stahl of the USA national women’s soccer team to speak at the national tournament banquet. Her message and testimony helped me realize where I was spiritually and to determine where I wanted to go with my life and career. I came to realize that I didn’t have to take drugs or drink to play at the top level. For some reason I had thought that the two went hand in hand. As I recommitted my life to God, I began to excel in the various areas of my life, including athletics. My junior year at IWU brought another chance to play at the NCCAA national soccer tournament at LeTourneau University in Texas, followed by completing my college career at the NAIA regional my senior year, receiving honors both years. The Lord allowed my experiences to shape who I am and what I do today. Following graduation I pursued a field of

substance abuse counseling in which I received certification at the CCDC I level to complement my bachelor of science degree in psychology from IWU. For three years following my graduation, I served as a primary counselor for alcoholics and addicts in a detoxification unit in a hospital while coaching soccer at the high school level. Although I was coaching, I missed the NCCAA and the Christian college environment. Knowing the impact the NCCAA had on my life, I began searching the NCCAA web site and found a job with an NCCAA member institution, Greenville College, where I could enjoy serving as both head men’s soccer coach and substance abuse counselor. God has certainly led me here, allowed me to use my experiences to help others, and topped it off by allowing me to use athletics to impact the lives of student-athletes, hopefully continuing the circle in my life. Will you assist the NCCAA in their ministry? It made a difference in my life and now I am continuing the circle by impacting the lives of my student-athletes. Your prayers and financial gifts make a difference.

A Message From Our Athletic Director

A s we approach the 2009 soccer season, we are reminded of the rich tradition and history of Greenville College soccer. The Panthers’ history has been filled with success on the field as well as off the field. Many lessons have been learned through soccer that have impacted students’ lives for eternity. For that reason alone, we are thankful for the significant role our soccer program has played

in students’ lives. As we remember the history, we also look forward to the future and great things ahead for the tool of soccer to be used in the development of young men and women. Our head coach, Brian McMahon, gives us many reasons to be optimistic about the 53rd season of men’s soccer and 18th season of women’s soccer. We hope you will enjoy watching and supporting Panther Soccer as it strives to fulfill the mission of Greenville College on and off the field.

GREENVILLE, Ill. – Defending the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship became the goal of ninth-year head coach Brian McMahon and members of the 2009 Greenville College men’s soccer team long ago, but now the

journey has begun to make their goal a reality. One year removed from the SLIAC tournament championship and the first-ever appearance of any Greenville College team in an NCAA Division III national tournament, expectations are high as the Panthers embark on their season.

Returning to the Panther squad this year are four players who were recognized as SLIAC all-conference choices last season. Following the 2008 season, David Dunlop, a sophomore of Coleraine, Northern Ireland, earned a spot on the SLIAC second team while teammates Daniel Taylor, a sophomore of Village Ridge, Mo.; Matt Reeb, a senior of Belleville, Ill.; and Terrance Cosby, a senior of Jefferson City, Mo., were honorable mention picks.

Entering the season, 2008 top scorer Dunlop will be depended upon to provide a much-needed scoring presence. Last year, Dunlop posted a team-leading 16 goals, 12 assists, and 44 points and received the SLIAC newcomer of the year trophy. However, Dunlop should not have to provide all the offense as the team’s second and third leading scorers, Reeb and Taylor, join him. Reeb was second

on the 2008 team with 12 goals and tied for Taylor for second with 29 points. Taylor added 11 goals as a part of his 29 points.

Cosby provides support on defense as he led a unit that only allowed 1.45 goals per game last season.

The Panthers concluded the 2008 season with an overall record of 15-4-3 (6-1-1 SLIAC) and placed second in the conference during the regular season. However, Greenville avenged their regular season conference loss to Principia and tie against Fontbonne to defeat both teams 3-2 in the SLIAC tournament semifinals and championship games, respectively.

McMahon, who directs the squad, now places second on the Panther soccer all-time victories list with a record of 92-64-20 in eight seasons. His winning percentage of .580 places second among Greenville coaches with two or more seasons as head coach.

Over the past seven seasons, the Panthers have won 88 games, giving them the most wins over a seven-year period in the 50-year history of Greenville College men’s soccer. In addition, the Panthers have recorded five consecutive seasons with a record over .600 which is also a first.

Entering his eighth season as Greenville College women’s soccer

coach, Brian McMahon has seen a full spectrum of talent cross

his path. Starting with a group that finished with just four wins

in 2002, McMahon’s teams have steadily improved, breaking

virtually every individual and team record en route to 30 victories over

the last two seasons and three consecutive years with a regular season

record of .500 or better.

Returning to the Lady Panthers this season will be a trio of juniors who

were named to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference all-

conference team in 2008.

“With such a veteran group of players returning, I really feel we could

beat anyone we play on any given day,” said McMahon. “I see my biggest

challenge for this year’s team as developing a quality team chemistry as

we lost several great leaders from last year’s team. I think that chemistry

will determine the success for how we finish the season.”

Leading the group of Greenville returnees is Jackie Sievert, a midfielder

from St. Charles, Mo. Sievert earned first team SLIAC honors and was

recognized as an NCCAA North Central all-region selection.

Sievert led the Lady Panther scoring attack with 35 points over 20

games. Her 15 assists were more than twice the total of the runner-up

(seven assists), and her 10 goals ranked second on the squad. Sievert

took a team-leading 91 shots, scoring on 11 percent, and contributed

one game-winning goal.

Also returning to the Lady Panthers are SLIAC honorable mention

selections Nikki Ziegemeier and Kaitlin Sexton, both of St. Charles, Mo.

Ziegemeier, a forward, tallied nine goals and seven assists for 25 points.

Two of her goals were game-winners. Sexton, a defender, posted seven

goals and seven assists for 21 points, while also anchoring the Greenville

College defense.

“I am definitely excited to get underway this year with the women’s

team,” said McMahon. “In recent times we have brought in several great

recruiting classes and this year appears to be the same.”

GREENVILLE COLLEGE PANTHER SOCCER

Glen and Maxine Crum Recreation CenterCompleted in 1993 as part of Greenville’s 100th Anniversary and named for generous Greenville donors, Glen and Maxine Crum, in 1998, the Recreation Center serves a wide variety of purposes. The building houses athletic offices as well as flexible facilities that can be converted into two tennis courts, batting cages, basketball courts, volleyball courts. It also contains an indoor walking track and serves as a training facility for multiple athletic teams.

H.J. Long GymnasiumGreenville built the historic H. J. Long Gymnasium in 1961. Named for the college’s fifth president, the gym seats 2,000 enthusiastic Panther fans as they cheer for the volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams. The building also houses locker rooms, training facilities, and coaching and administrative offices.

John M. Strahl Athletic ComplexA 14-acre area just one mile south of the main campus, the complex was dedicated to former coach and athletic director John M. Strahl in April 2004. The complex includes Francis Field, Lady Panther Field, Robert E. Smith Field, S.W. Andrews Fields, and the Briner Training Center.

Francis FieldFrancis Field consists of separate home venues for football and soccer. The Panther football field was completed in 1987 just before the Panther football team began their first season. The stadium can seat up to 2,000 fans. Greenville also sports an all-weather track which was completed in 1985. The soccer field was completed in the mid-1960’s. Recent improvements have included installation of new Bermuda grass, team benches on the east side of the field, a new kicking wall, bleachers seating 500, and a new press box.

S.W. Andrews Fields Located within the John M. Strahl Athletic Complex, S.W. Andrews Fields consist of two 80-yard by 120-yard irrigated soccer fields and a 100-space parking lot. The facility was completed in 2006 to serve as the primary practice facility for the men’s and women’s soccer programs.

Fitness Training CenterThe fitness center includes an indoor lap pool, cardio equipment, weight training machines, free weights and aerobics room. A sauna and jacuzzi are available in the men’s and women’s locker rooms.

Facilities

Lady Panther FieldLady Panther Field, home of the softball team, boasts of a skinned infield, 200 foot fence enclosing the field, brick dug-outs and ample practice space. With its new scoreboard, new press box, new outfield fence, revamped dugouts, and sound system, the facility is one of the most enjoyable places to play softball in the conference.

Robert E. Smith FieldDedicated to Greenville’s ninth president on October 12, 1985, the Panther baseball field is one of the best around. It’s located next to the football and soccer fields in the John M. Strahl Athletic Complex only one mile south of campus.

Briner Training Center The Briner Training Center houses indoor practice facilities for baseball, softball, and track and field. The 12,000 square foot facility was named in honor of Dr. Robert A Briner during the 2004-05 school year. The interior features batting cages, an artificial turf flooring, and an area for pitching.

E.G. Burritt GymnasiumThe original home court of the Panther basketball teams was built in 1915 and named for Greenville’s third president, Eldon G. Burritt. This gym doesn’t see the action it used to, but it still serves a purpose. Features include a climbing wall, training equipment, and a classroom.

Scott J. Burgess Tennis Complex The GC tennis complex includes six courts. The first two courts were built in the 1940’s, the second two in 1973, and the last two were completed in 1995. The courts were dedicated by Stan Smith in November 1974 in memory of Scott J. Burgess, a GC basketball player who died while still a student. The men’s and women’s Panther tennis teams are not the only teams to call these courts home. The local high school teams use them as well.

T he Greenville College men’s soccer program journeyed

to Europe during the summer of 2009 for the second

time since 2006 for an 11-day, 10-night tour. The

Panthers, under the direction of ninth year head coach

Brian McMahon, traveled to London of the United Kingdom for

nine days of training, playing exhibition matches, sightseeing,

and attending club and professional matches.

“We were excited to have the opportunity to travel abroad

again as a team to Europe,” said McMahon. “The experience we

had as a team getting to watch professional clubs at the top

level along with playing a few matches along the way was a

fantastic start to our season.”

After flying from St. Louis to London via Chicago throughout

Friday evening, July 31, and the early hours of Saturday morning,

August 1, the Panthers arrived in London on Saturday just in

time to view two live matches of the Emirates Cup, a continental

competition of European club teams at Emirates Stadium, home

of the Arsenal Football Club in the English Premier League. They

returned to Emirates Stadium to watch two matches on Sunday,

August 2. Before attending the matches on Sunday, Greenville

experienced a training session with the Fulham Football Club in

the morning.

Their Monday, August 3, schedule included a tour of

Wembley Stadium, the second largest stadium in Europe and

the largest stadium in the world with every seat under cover,

and its first exhibition match at West Ham Academy in the

afternoon. After training Tuesday and Wednesday mornings,

August 4 and 5, the Panthers played Sports Ed in an exhibition

match Wednesday afternoon. The men returned to training

Thursday afternoon, August 6.

On Friday, August 7, the Panthers toured Old Trafford Stadium,

home of the Manchester United in the Premier League, and its

museum, before playing its third match. On Saturday, August 8,

Greenville played their final exhibition game against First Point

before later attending an exhibition match between Liverpool of

the Premier League and Atletico Madrid of the Spanish La Liga on

Saturday afternoon.

Following a walking tour of London on Sunday morning,

August 8, the Panthers had an opportunity to attend the

Community Shield Final between Manchester United and Chelsea

of the Premier League at Wembley Stadium as the final event of its

trip.

The European tour was a special exemption granted by

the NCAA which allows the programs at member institutions to

compete and practice outside its traditional and non-traditional

seasons. The NCAA regulates foreign tours by permitting them

once every three years. In 2008, the women’s soccer team traveled

to Europe, and tentative plans call for the women’s soccer team to

return in 2011.

“In my previous years as a coach doing this, it has really

brought the team together and provided for a great chemistry, so

my hope is that this was again the same,” said McMahon.

The Greenville College men’s soccer program completed the 2008 season with an overall record of 15-4-3, a SLIAC tournament

championship, and an unprecedented appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament.

FAITH BASED PROGRAMSOne of the distinctive elements that sets Greenville apart as a college is its effort to be a campus that takes seriously the Christian faith. The men’s and women’s soccer programs are Christian programs, seeking to attract top-level players who are also committed to embracing Christian principles for living and integrating those principles into all that we do on and off the field.

A GREAT LEVEL OF PLAY At Greenville we are searching for players who choose to be part of our program because of the quality they see here, the excitement that surrounds the program on campus, and the chance to have a great college soccer experience in a Christian environment. There is a standard of excellence in

the program that isn’t limited in terms of its vision to being a “Division III” team. Greenville seeks to excel and compete at the national level in Division III. Over the past few years Greenville has competed against several nationally ranked collegiate programs of all divisions as well as taking trips to compete overseas against professional clubs from the Netherlands, Germany, England, Austria, Belgium, and the Czech Republic.
