The benefits of Sport and active recreation have been extensively documented. Benefits to the SA community alone are far reaching.

Almost 1 million South Australians enjoy sport as participants, coaches, officials and spectators and also recognise the positive impact on the economy, productivity, health and wellbeing of sport in our community. A valuable sense of community is generated from grassroots sport where Clubs provide sport for excellent health benefits while developing the physical and social well-being of all participants and the pathway to elite sport catering for high performance athletes competing at a state, national and international level and the success of our athletes. Sporting Clubs, and in particular Bowls Clubs at the centre of our communities and forefront of delivering the sport with all the benefits for the individual and our South Australian community are facing increasing financial issues impacting on the sustainability of their programs. This is becoming increasingly challenging as community sport is confronted with many financial burdens with insufficient and ageing infrastructure coupled with limited operational resources. An increase in costs to participate in and operate sporting activities and inadequately funded infrastructure is seeing many sporting activities, clubs, organisations and participants in South Australia facing financial pressure. This effect is being increasingly compounded as Sport competes along with many other priorities for the scarce public funding programs available. There are many examples of projects requiring support and it is clear that there needs to be greater recognition by

policymakers of the significant role that is played by the Bowling Clubs providing valuable community, social and health benefits. An increase in public investment in Sport and recreation is required to ensure quality delivery and affordability of the Sport for all. As a focus of the Bowls SA Strategic direction the Board endorsed a State-wide Audit of all Bowls facilities, assisted by the Office for Recreation and Sport, with the final report set to provide a valuable resource for identifying areas of focus for future funding at all local, state and federal government levels. Congratulations to Janice (Jackie) Kelly OAM on her election as Bowls SA President and welcome to new Board Members Ron Mitchell and Bob Boorman who both have extensive business and Club membership backgrounds. A sincere thank you to Don Crosby for his contribution and dedication to the Board and the role of President over the last five years.

I would like to take this opportunity for and on behalf of the Bowls SA administration to thank you for your support throughout the year and wish you all a happy and safe festive season.

As this is the last Bowler for this calendar year, it seems appropriate to reflect briefly

on some of the achievements and challenges that occurred in the last twelve months.

A major challenge for everyone has been to provide first and foremost an Open competition. It has been pleasing to see that Associations and Clubs have risen to the challenge.

After problems were incurred as a result of high temperatures during the playing of the Country Round Robin, Bowls SA was obligated to further develop a policy that shows duty of care in all weather conditions. The Bowls SA Heat & Inclement Weather Policy was reviewed and distributed, and covers all State events.

The IMG system of registration has challenged everyone and although there have been some teething problems it is ultimately going to make recording data much easier in the future. The Bowls SA Constitution is still being reviewed and the Working Party has spent many hours in trying to update the document but also to make sure that Bowls SA meets the necessary legal obligations.

Perhaps our greatest achievement has been the success of Seniors’ events and Volunteer days which have been held both in metropolitan and country regions. These have given the Board the opportunity to meet members from across the State, to work with the Regions to not only recognise individual members of Clubs for

their contribution, but to also recognise all volunteers who are the backbone of our organisation.

Following the AGM in September the Board farewelled Don Crosby and we would like to thank him for his dedication to helping bowls perform in the best interest of all members. New faces on the Board are Ron Mitchell who is the male Metropolitan Director and Bob Boorman who has been appointed as an Independent Director. Both of these gentlemen bring skills and experience to the Board and we welcome them and look forward to working with them for the best interests of bowls.

An audit report of bowling facilities across the State has been completed and this will be a valuable tool for not only identifying issues, but also for attracting more funding. The Board will be looking at improving governance not only for the Board but for the members across the State. Good governance is being recognised by Bowls Australia and The Australian Sports Commission and any improvements Bowls SA can make to our governance structure and policies can only assist us with future success and funding.

While this is very early in my term as President I am hoping to meet as many members as possible and to have the opportunity to hear and discuss any bowling topics that are of general interest. In the meantime on behalf of the Board I would like to wish you Seasons Greetings and good bowling in the New Year.

Adelaide Endurance launched its bid for Australian Premier League success with an opening round clash against New Zealand Blackjacks as the APL got underway for the second year; the match being the forerunner to 14 preliminary round games in three days

for the team in their quest to win the $110,000 tournament at Club Pine Rivers, Queensland. The APL expanded to eight sides this year with the addition of Moama Bowling Club aligned team Murray Steamers and the Gold Coast Hawks.

Televised on Fox Sports, the APL with its shortened matches, power plays, coloured uniforms and in-game substitutions has been labelled bowls’ answer to Twenty20 cricket.

To cheer on our local heroes a good crowd gathered at The Highway on the first night of competition to watch the Endurance team do battle with the Gold Coast Hawks on the big screen. Our thanks to The Highway for providing a superb venue and atmosphere.

The APL side of Wayne Ruediger, Scott Thulborn and Simon Dorr with Faye Luke as Coach have excellent credentials, proving themselves on the green time and time again. Ruediger has enjoyed an exceptional year, winning Bronze at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games while Thulborn recently won the National Champion of Champions title and was named APL’s Most Valued Player of the inaugural series. New recruit Simon Dorr is a member of the Bowls SA State Squad with a string of wins to his name.Faye Luke is well known for her exceptional Coaching expertise at national and state level.

Endurance were clearly focussed on the prize and after two full days of play they were sitting in fourth place and into the finals with New Zealand’s Blackjacks, new comers Murray Steamers and Perth Suns in the final four.

Endurance finished the minor rounds in fourth position with seven wins and seven losses having secured two wins over last year’s Champions the Brisbane Gold, whilst the Kiwi’s had their measure in both clashes. All other head to head battles were split showing the evenness of the competition where the matches could have gone either way.

Guaranteed their finals spot when the Murray Steamers defeated the Melbourne Roys in their Round 14 encounter, Endurance didn’t have to rely on the result of the game against the Perth Suns in their final minor round.

From across the ditch the Blackjacks team of Shannon McIlroy, Jo Edwards and Ali Forsyth had booked their place in Friday’s semi-final rounds after a convincing 12 victories from 14 starts on the Club Pine Rivers’ carpet.

Being runners up after going down to Brisbane Gold in the final decider last year Endurance were keen to better this result but being drawn to play the Blackjacks in the first semi-final was their first challenge. Endurance by name and enduring by nature, Ruediger and Thulborn joined forces to play exceptional games to prove they should never be underestimated when they eliminated top of the leader board Blackjacks in two sets 10-2, 5 all. With a tense wait the Endurance then had to see who would emerge victorious from the Murray Steamers versus Perth Suns semi-final.

Third placed on the leader board, Perth Suns line up of Clive Adams, Jeremy Henry and Thomas Mitchell gave it their best but ultimately Murray Steamers came through with 6-3 and 4 all wins to move into the Final.

The Murray Steamers boasted some of the sport’s premier players including Scotland’s Alex Marshall, Canada’s Ryan Bester and local Michael Walker, and was widely regarded by people in the know as the team to beat at the start of the series.

Page 9: SA Bowler December 2014

SA BOWLER | December 2014 | 9

Still on fire from their win over the Suns the Steamers took to the carpet with adrenalin pumping and the prize in sight. Endurance however didn’t go down without a fantastic fight recording 6-2 and 5-3 sets and a commendable back to back runner up status.

Alex Marshall was named APL02 Most Valued Player, taking the honour from inaugural winner Scott Thulborn.

Our thanks to Messenger Community News for their support and coverage of the Adelaide Endurance team in the lead up and during the APL and a special thank you to ANZ District Manager, Lindsay Nobes and ANZ Branch Manager McLaren Vale, Justin Kelly for their fantastic support of Bowls SA throughout the year.

In summing up his time at Pine Rivers, Justin Kelly said “It was a great experience watching quality bowling in a fantastic atmosphere and I was proud to represent ANZ as part of their involvement with Bowls SA.”

Bowls SA CEO Mark Easton said “On a world stage of quality players, our determination to expose our locally grown players has yet again proven just how much talent is here in SA and we can take pride that we can mix it with the best and come away champions. This is also a testament to Bowls SA staff and volunteers that behind the scenes, in the marketing and media and in the training sessions their lead up planning and preparation was exceptional. A big thank you to all.” Final placings:Murray SteamersAdelaide EnduranceNew Zealand BlackjacksPerth SunsMelbourne Roys Sydney LionsGold Coast HawksBrisbane Gold

Words such as colourful, endearing, trustworthy and approachable are not always the first adjectives to come to mind to describe

politicians but Independent Senator Nick Xenophon is definitely an exception.

Before becoming involved in politics, Nick was running a small suburban legal practice in Adelaide.

In 1997 he stood for the SA Upper House and was surprised when he was elected.

Re-elected in 2006 to State Parliament, he decided to run federally for the Senate in the 2007 election because he believed this would allow him to do more for SA on a whole range of issues.

Since starting in the Senate in July 2008, he has fought on key issues for SA - pokies, online gambling, water security, food labelling, education, health, aged care, cost of living pressures and a whole lot more.

Nick has been in the forefront of South Australian politics for many years and is well known and respected for his championing of the underdog, his crusades against injustice and causes, and he remains a staunch believer in his home state, South Australia.

He believes the most important part of his job is speaking up for people who might not otherwise have

a voice and he sums it up in saying “I would rather go down fighting, than still be standing because I stayed silent.”

A man with a quirky sense of humour, his stunts have been amusing but more importantly they’ve captured the attention of the public in his bid to raise the profile of his message and affect change.

Over the last year Nick has been quietly assisting Bowls SA in the background and so it is with a great deal of pleasure that we can announce Nick Xenophon as an Ambassador for Bowls in South Australia. Nick showed great promise as a bowler in his first roll up at the Lockleys Bowling Club recently and stayed for an interview with Bowls Exposed host T J Saunders in which he applauded bowls for its “strong sense of community, where people keep an eye on each other, have a sense of belonging, get fit and stay fit, which ticks all the boxes.” To hear the full interview visit YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u7Euy_WXoI

We welcome Mr X to the world of bowls and trust he will enjoy and gain from the relationship as much as Bowls SA will.

Bowls Australia President Des Skinner and Women’s Bowls NSW President Robyn Procter welcomed the Bowlers Arm teams from Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales

to the second National Bowlers Arm Championships at the beautifully prepared Beresfield Bowling Club on September 15.

On the first day the three states did battle in Fours, followed by Pairs on the second day concluding with Singles and Triples on the third and final day.

Each state was vying for the Bowls Australia National Trophy as the overall winner. NSW and Victoria were also playing for the Starrett – Ashley Shield; NSW and South Australia for the South Shield;

Victoria and South Australia for the Bowlers Arm Challenge Shield.

Final results were Victoria with 30 game wins for 60pts, NSW with 17 ½ game wins for 35 pts with South Australia 11 ½ game wins for 23 pts. The South Australia team performance was outstanding when you consider that Victoria has over 3,000 bowling arm players compared to SA’s 200 or so.

In 2015 South Australia will host this event at Tranmere Bowling Club, September 7-9. It is expected that a team from Queensland will also be taking part in what has now become a feature of the National Bowling Calendar.

Last year’s Australian Premier League Player of the Series has gone from strength to strength claiming his first Australian Champion of Champion singles title when he defeated Perth Sun’s new recruit Thomas Mitchell in

what were treacherous conditions at Taren Point Bowling Club. Scott continues to be in the forefront of the sport adding to his runner-up performance last year with the Adelaide Endurance and wins in Bowls SA events over the last two seasons. The final was delayed due to inclement weather and with reports of car’s floating down Taren Point Road overnight, a slight delay to the start of play was a good result for the greenkeepers who worked tirelessly to prepare the greens. Despite losing the opening three ends of the match Scott won the next six to lead 7-3, going on to a 12-5 lead he continued to jump ahead from Mitchell, extending his lead to 20-10. Mitchell kept his hopes alive scoring only his second multiple of the match, a three took him to 13-20, but the very next end Thulborn finished the match scoring his required one. Thulborn joins the likes of Brett Wilkie, David Holt and Dylan Fisher on the Australian Champion of Champions honour board. Thulborn will now represent Australia at the World Champion of Champions at Club Helensvale on the Gold Coast in 2015 alongside NSW’s Katrina Wright.

What a night! Six teams of crazily-dressed bowlers, some learners and some masters had a great night of fun with a few drinks and pizza at the

Whyalla Bowls Club.

Teams were made up of a combination of ANZ staff and Whyalla Bowls Club members, playing 8 ends with many, many laughs and triumphs throughout the evening.

We had the pleasure of spending quality time with the Club President, Ron and the Club Secretary, Darryl to not only receive great coaching but to help them to understand a bit about ANZ and how we can help their club succeed.

A number of awards were presented by Club officials and we presented them with thank you gifts for their

hospitality and patience.

During the evening the Secretary spoke with our Whyalla Home and Investment Lending

Manager, Mick Gale, about putting an ANZ sponsor’s sign on their sponsors’ board

and the President went on to invite Relieving Branch Manager, Ebony

Curwood and Mick Gale to their next committee member to

educate their members on the Bowls SA Mortgage

Introducer Program initiative.

The following day one of the bowlers, Gary, visited ANZ Whyalla and asked for Ebony... He said: “Please thank everyone for their participation and entertainment last night” and added “It was the best night he has EVER had at the bowls club, and he can’t wait until we go there again!”

Not only did we build rapport with members of the Whyalla Bowls Club but we also gave SA North & West Branch Managers the opportunity to “try” bowling and to help them feel comfortable about the game and the culture, before visiting their local bowls club, to educate them on the ANZ/SA Bowls SA initiative.

As we know most sporting clubs often continue on with the same financial arrangements they have had for many years. This presents us with the opportunity to review our local bowls clubs current financial arrangements to provide advice from a Small Business perspective.

Our thanks to Amanda Schultz, Service Quality Manager for ANZ North & West South Australia for providing this report and some photos of what Bowls SA hopes is just one of many such nights of fun.

For more information please contact Daniel Lawlor at Bowls SA on 8234 [email protected] or call your local ANZ branch.

Congratulations Mark Easton on being named Sport SA Sports Administrator of the Year at The KPMG Celebration of South Australian Sport, Annual Sports

Awards dinner on Friday November 7 held in the William Magarey Room, Adelaide Oval.

As Chief Executive Officer of Bowls SA since March 2013 Mark has been instrumental in realising significant achievements both for players and the governance of the sport and has great visions for moving the sport forward.

Overcoming resistance to change is a key strength and Mark always maintains a very positive and friendly attitude towards Staff, Stakeholders and Members. He has the ability to work under pressure and always manages to resolve stressful situations.

Under Mark’s leadership, initiatives such as addressing male dominated weekend Bowls, women within the Sport, junior participation and inclusion of disability and multicultural groups have been and will continue to be addressed.

Mark is also a great promoter of Club Business and Strategic Planning, membership of Good Sports, Star Club and Clubs SA and recognition

of Bowls SA and Club volunteers who are the mainstay of the sport. The introduction of recognition awards, Club of the Year and Volunteer of the Year saw attendance at the annual Awards Night set a new national record.

Mark’s ability to multi task, undertake major projects and deliver key drivers for sustainability and promotion is a major asset to the Sport of Bowls. On the green publicity was given a boost when Mark administered the entry of the inaugural Adelaide side, the Adelaide Endurance, into the Australian Premier League (APL). This was seen as an opportunity to expose our local talent and build the profile of Bowls in South Australia. The decision to invest in local talent was rewarded when Adelaide Endurance were runners-up to the highest ranked side. A great exposure for our Sport.

Social Media, through Facebook and Twitter, have been established to promote the sport to current and an ever increasing number of potential members and to provide up to the minute news and results.

Mark’s lateral thinking and capacity to implement change has seen Bowls in South Australia lead the way in diversity nationally. His ability to engage, develop and understand relationships has placed Bowls SA in a sound position both financially and socially.

Clubs SA recently held their annual Charity Bowls Day at Clearview Bowling Club raising much needed

funds for Heartkids SA. We would like to thank everyone who played, volunteered to assist running the day and our loyal sponsors who supported the event.

Despite the cooler weather the day was a resounding success, raising Six Thousand Five Hundred and Fifty Eight Dollars $6,558. The feedback has been extremely positive and will ensure the event will be back next year, bigger and better. No one went home thirsty or hungry either!

There were two divisions with the Jack High Cup to cater for the more serious bowlers and the Fun Cup which introduced bowls to many novices. The noise and laughter from the Fun Cup competitors demonstrated that a great time was had by all, although a few wrong biases were noticed. Club Marion were victors in the Jack High Cup and Team BOC in the Fun Cup. The real winners on the day were Heartkids SA who received 100% of the proceeds raised.

The funds raised this year will enable Heartkids SA to provide support for up to seven families to accompany their child when undergoing a heart operation in Melbourne. Unknown to most people, unless they are directly affected, heart operations on babies and young children are not generally conducted in South Australia, but in Melbourne.

HeartKids is unique in that it is the only organisation in Australia solely focused on all aspects of children’s heart disease. They aim to offer support to families of children with heart disease, be it congenital (born with) or acquired. Heartkids have also partnered with leading cardiologists and researchers and are working to provide funding to assist them in reducing the incidence of CHD and to improve the mortality rates currently being experienced.

Thanks again to everyone who attended or supported the day.

Volunteering, discovering the complexities of the sport or just having fun are all great learning experiences for our younger generation.

As part of their summer PE component, Kapunda High School Year 11 & 12 students, attended the Kapunda Bowling Club on a weekly basis during 2013-14, and under the guidance of two club members became competent bowlers.

Part way through the summer season the Year 12 students (who had attended the season before) were moderated as part of their SACE Certificate.

The program is continuing this season and plans are in place for senior Primary students (Years 6 & 7) to participate in a bowling segment as part of their PE curriculum. The aim is to send a competitive team to Adelaide to compete in the SAPSASA competition to be held May 15, 2015.

In a new initiative, the Kangaroo Island Council, Bowls SA and Advance Kingscote recently worked together to recognise volunteers in sport on Kangaroo Island.

It was agreed to have a film evening and the Kangaroo Island Youth Council were happy to take charge.

Their involvement was to select a suitable film, to design and print tickets and flyers and write to all Sporting Clubs across the Island.

The film “Now You See Me”, proved to be entertaining and thought provoking as everyone tried to work out the plot before it was all revealed at the end.

Thanks to the generosity of Advance Kingscote and the Kangaroo Island Council the evening was free of charge and the only costs to individuals was buying drinks or chips; all this being organised and offered by the Youth Council.

Congratulations to the Youth Council and a big thank to the sponsors of the event. The Youth Council are now considering other film nights in the future.

Goolwa Bowling Club member Brian Penny, recently appointed as Junior Development Officer, was pleased to report that the Club’s school holiday ‘Learn to Bowl’ program finished on a high note with a group of juniors, parents and grandparents all joining in the fun with nearly all the participants being on holiday on the South Coast.

The Junior Jack Attack kit recently purchased from Bowls Australia was put to good use with the youngest children playing a mat-to-mat relay ably assisted by on green assistants Pat Willats, Hayley Woolfitt, Ann Penny and Reg Bastick.

Year 11 students from the Birdwood High School have been having bowls lessons at the Gumeracha & District Bowling Club. For the past six weeks, three classes of approximately 60 students have been using the facilities at the Gumeracha Bowling Club to learn about the game of bowls. PE teacher Diane Roberts comes to each session and instructs the students on how to play and gives them special tasks to make the game interesting.

Established as a competitive outlet for players over 60 to compete in a National Competition the 2014 Australian Seniors Sides Championships were played at Tweed Heads Bowling Club,

October 7 – 10. This is still a relatively new event, with the Women’s Championship first held in 2011 and the Men’s in 2005. The Men’s Team started strongly with a win against NT, which was then followed by a heart breaking one shot loss to Victoria, losses to ACT, WA and NSW, a win against Tasmania followed by another loss to Queensland. The Women’s Team had a Bye in the first game, while in the second game against Victoria our women drew 54 all. A win against ACT, losses to WA, NSW and Tasmania followed by a thrilling two shot victory over Queensland concluded the tournament. The Men’s team finished in 6th position overall, while the Women’s team were 5th overall.Congratulations to SA Players of the series Marie Roberts and Steve Eichenberger.Next year the Australian Senior Sides are set to be held in Tasmania, so stay tuned for more information and dates for selection trials if you would like to be considered to be a part of the 2015 SA Seniors Sides Team.

For the first time in history, the Australian Under 18 National Championships were held in the Northern Territory when Nightcliff Bowling Club played host to the

event from Monday September 29 to Thursday October 2.

With the host club having only two greens some major changes to the traditional conditions of play were necessary, including the introduction of a time limit for all games, no dead ends and a different schedule for the week.

Accompanied by State Under 18 Coach Mark Haines and Manager Erin Haines, SA’s young team included:

• Isaac Trenorden (West Lakes) • Josh Studham (Holdfast Bay) • Tyson Wilson (Grange) • James Bodnar (Lockleys) • Gerrin Jenke (Loxton) • Rianne Rieger (Adelaide)• Carly Otterspoor (Kapunda)• Jacqui Bowman (Gawler) • Bailey Rafferty (Salisbury)• Lynsey Trenorden (West Lakes)

With Northern Territory being short of players and due to the National Training Centre Partnership of SA and NT two more SA players, Stephanie Clarke of Encounter Bay and Jack Hateley of Birchmore, were given the opportunity to compete for NT and gained valuable experience that can only assist them in future years.

The humidity and heat was apparent as soon as the team stepped off the plane in Darwin and three practice sessions were set to assist the team in acclimatising to the conditions.

Sectional play on the first three days of the Championships saw SA in the same section as Queensland, ACT and Tasmania and on completion of sectional play, the SA Boys Triples finished undefeated to qualify for the Gold Medal Match against Victoria. Meanwhile the SA Girls Triples and SA Girls Fours both qualified to play off for the Bronze Medal

after finishing second in their sections. On what was the hottest day of the event, the teams gathered to compete for medals and placing’s play offs and in the first session our Girls Fours team started well against their NSW opposition. With the score locked at 9 all on the tenth end, NSW picked up a 5 to jump ahead and claim the Bronze; our girls finishing a respectable 4th after being unable to pick up enough shots to catch NSW before the end of the match.

The Boys Fours also played off against NSW for 5th and 6th position, with our boys claiming 5th spot in a thriller after an extra end was required.

In the Boys Triples Gold medal match the boys found themselves down 7-2 after the sixth end against old rivals Victoria. In a massive fight back SA claimed the Gold medal 16-13, sealing the deal with a single shot on the final end that Victoria were unable to dislodge.

In other finals the Boys Pairs went down 11-20 in the game against WA to determine 5th and 6th placing, while the Girls Singles went down 16-21 against NT in the play off for 7th and 8th.

The final sessions saw our Girls Triples take on Victoria in a fight for the Bronze medal. The girls put their foot down and surged to a 9-1 lead after five ends, then the Victorian girls started coming back before the SA girls kicked up a gear to take the Bronze Medal 24-11. The Boys Singles then played off against NT for 5th and 6th claiming 5th position with a 21-8 win, and the Girls Pairs grabbed 7th position with a 20-16 win against NT.

SA ranked 5th Overall, with the Boy’s team finishing 4th and the Girls 6th.

Three members of the 2014 team now step out of the Under 18 ranks, however with a talented Under 18 State Squad, the future bodes well for our State.

Gold Medal winners James Bodnar (Sk), Tyson Wilson (Second) and Gerrin Jenke (Lead); Bronze Medal winners, Carly Otterspoor (Sk), Bailey Rafferty (Lead) and Jacqui Bowman (Second)

FOOD SAFETY With the Bowls season in full swing, more social activities and summer heat to contend with it’s a good time for Clubs to review their food handling procedures to ensure any incidence of

contamination or food-borne illness is minimised.

Food Safety Practices and General Requirements apply to all commercial, charitable or community activities including ‘once-only’ projects that involve the handling or sale of food.

There are some exemptions for charities and community groups. Low risk food (such as cakes and jams) or hot food that is sold or distributed as soon as it is cooked (such as sausages and steaks) need not comply with the requirements.

An area where special care needs to be taken is providing sandwiches, finger food, salads and cold meats to players.

With chemicals used on greens, it is especially important that players wash their hands before touching food. Providing individual servings can minimise cross contamination. And it is particularly important to ensure food is not removed from refrigeration any longer than recommended by Food Safety Practices.

Information and resources are available from the South Australia Department of Health. Email [email protected] or call 8416 6333 and ask to speak to an Environmental Health Officer.

It seems like only yesterday, that I and 14 strangers gathered in Melbourne to commence our journey as Community Development Officers for Bowls Australia.

After two solid weeks of training we were released into the world of Bowls to render assistance to bowling clubs around our nation.

The journey has seen us offer clubs a variety of services from Business Plans, Constitutions, Liquor Licensing advice, Grant Writing, Junior Development and many more areas.

In my area of the Northern Western side of South Australia I have attended to the needs of 114 clubs from Broken Hill to Ceduna and it has been an absolute pleasure to serve these clubs.

It has, however, come the time to make a change and so I take a different direction as General Manager of the Payneham Bowling Club, as of December 1.

I will miss the interaction with the club’s and the wonderful

people I have met and worked with over the past three years.

I would particularly like to thank my fellow CDO’s, the Staff at Bowls Australia and Mark Easton and the terrific people at Bowls SA for their support in the past.

I have been advised that the role will be advertised in the new year, and I would encourage any interested person to seriously have a think about applying as it is such a rewarding job, where you are surrounded by some really good people.

So I will sign off one last time and wish all clubs the very best for the future and please remember that if you are ever near Payneham and feel like having a roll or a great coffee, I will be more than pleased to buy you one.

MGA Insurance Brokers is a proud South Australian owned company employing over 200 employees Australia wide. MGA prides itself on playing the

support and advice role to all of its clients. That is the essence of what a good Insurance Broker should be doing – providing solid and sound professional advice to its clients in policy coverage, claims service or any general insurance topics.Always remember that as your Insurance Broker, MGA represents your club and not the insurance company. We are always available to provide you with unbiased advice. Not only are we always trying to tinker and upgrade the policy benefits so that your club is able to enjoy the best possible covers, but now that we represent over half of the bowling clubs in SA, we have the ability to use those numbers to gain a significant buying power when it comes to insurance premium discounts.Having supported, and been a major sponsor of the sport of lawn bowls for over 20 years, we certainly do have the knowledge and the experience to be able to handle any insurance situation or query that may arise at your club. Especially when it comes to claims. Two significant claims that come to mind over recent times are the fires that occurred at both Holdfast Bay Bowling Club and Toorak

Burnside Bowling Club. MGA are extremely pleased to say that both potentially devastating events were settled with high satisfaction for both clubs. It is these results that give me personally, and MGA as a business enormous satisfaction to be able to perform our support role when it matters most. Then there are issues like the recently released ‘Heat & Inclement Weather’ policy instigated by Bowls SA. I am pleased to say that both Beck and I here at MGA, have been able to provide invaluable and important support to many of the SA clubs concerning the potential insurance impacts of this revised policy. So, no matter what the issue is to do with insurance, both Beck and myself are always willing to assist, advise and support you and your club whenever the need arises.MGA Insurance Brokers are extremely proud of the long standing mutually and co-operative business relationship we have with Bowls SA Inc and we look forward to serving them and the clubs of SA for many years to come.

The Seniors Supa Series and Volunteer Appreciation Days continue to roll out and special guest Kevin the ATM has been busy meeting volunteers across the State.

SOUTH EAST

September 22 and 23 saw the Mount Gambier and Mount Gambier RSL & District Bowling Clubs host the ‘South Eastern 2 Day Bowls Classic’ which was followed on the Wednesday by a Volunteer Appreciation & Recognition Movie Morning. Approximately 40 volunteers representing Clubs from the Lower South East filled the City of Mount Gambier’s Dress Circle for morning tea and a screening of the movie ‘Blue Jasmine’.

Thanks go to the City of Mount Gambier for their wonderful support along with partners ANZ, Alsco, Clubs SA and Samuel Smith & Son. In attendance along with City of Mount Gambier Mayor, Steve Perryman were partners ANZ represented by Chris Imeson, Matt Foreman and ANZ Mount Gambier Branch Staff. A big thank you to Region Councillor Jenny Waugh and Assistant Councillor Heather Richards for assisting Bowls SA with the organising.

Merna Whitehead joined the Mount Gambier RSL Bowling Club in 1983-84 and a special presentation was made to acknowledge her 31 years of continued service.

Jeff England commenced bowls in 1987 at the Kingston Bowling Club. He has held the position of President for three years, Board Member for 15 years, a position he still holds and has been President of the Lower South East Bowls Association and Region 1 Assistant Councillor. In recognition of his service Jeff has been nominated for the Bowls SA Volunteer of the Year Award.

RIVERLAND

The Loxton District Bowling Club hosted over 60 volunteers on November 13 for a morning tea and presentation by guest speaker, Stewart McCully as part of the Riverland Volunteer Appreciation & Recognition Program.

Stewart McCully specialises as an Athlete Welfare Consultant and Corporate Training Facilitator and has worked with Stuart O’Grady, Glenelg Football Club, SA Jockey Association, Jayco Caravans, Palmer Hospitality Group, South Adelaide Football Club Junior Academy, Salisbury Talented Athletes Academy Netball, Adelaide Crows and Melbourne Football Clubs.

Stewart is also a former Glenelg League Footballer, playing 126 games, and a SANFL State Squad member in 1995.Stewart spoke of the importance of finding out an individuals’ motivation. Establishing and discovering why people do what they do, can make it so much easier to help them fulfil their goals or needs.

What motivates a person to volunteer could include the sense of fun, getting out of the house, socialising, helping people, giving back and working as a group to share the load.

It is also important to find out what drives non volunteers and what roles can be suggested that will encourage them to ‘give it a go’.

In addition to Bowls SA staff, Board Director Leith Gregurke ASM and Bowls Riverland President, Des Button were in attendance along with District Council of Loxton Waikerie CEO, Peter Ackland; Tony Pasin, Federal Member for Barker; Neil Martinson, Mayor of Renmark Paringa Council; ANZ represented by Lindsay Nobes, District Manager SA North East & Fleurieu District and staff from the local Riverland Branches.

Bowls SA thanks the District Council of Loxton Waikerie and partners ANZ, Alsco, Clubs SA, and Samuel Smith & Son for their wonderful support. Also a big thank you goes to Bowls Riverland President Des Button and Secretary Yvonne Jex for assisting Bowls SA with the organising.

A special presentation was made to Jenny Lyons who has been Secretary of the Berri Bowling Club for 10 years. Her dedication to community work resulted in her being presented with the Premiers Award for volunteer service earlier this year and Jenny has now been nominated for the Bowls SA Volunteer of the Year Award.

Presentations were also made to volunteers Dorothy Vaughan, Sue Lloyd, Kath Mader, Lorraine Lee, Bill Reichstein, Neville Taylor and Barb Taylor.

The following day the Waikerie Bowling Club hosted a Seniors Supa Series event and thanks go to Richard Law and Club members who ensured players in the 14 teams from Renmark, Loxton, Berri, Morgan, Barmera, Waikerie, Clare and Auburn had a great time. A Loxton team skippered by Peter Kimber took out the day with the Ken Stokes skippered Berri team runners-up.

Volunteers and Bowls SA partners enjoyed ‘The Hundred-

foot Journey’ on Friday October 31 when Bowls SA hosted another successful Volunteers Recognition Movie Morning

at the Capri Theatre, Goodwood to celebrate the wonderful contributions that volunteers across the state make to the sport of bowls.

Before the movie Capri Theatre organist Peter Hale entertained guests and special guest of the day Kevin the ATM took to the stage and treated everyone to a display of his dancing skills partnered by President Jackie Kelly OAM.

Bowls SA wishes to acknowledge the partners who support the Bowls SA Volunteer Appreciation Program, ANZ, Clubs SA, National Pharmacies, Adelaide Shores, Alsco, I Love Coffee, Samuel Smith and Apia.

In the lead up to the Australian Premier League which has been played at Pine Rivers Club in Queensland, Simon Dorr, Scott Thulborn, Wayne Ruediger and Coach Faye Luke were interviewed and presented with their APL shirts.

Special thanks to Rob Jordan and his team of volunteers at the Capri Theatre for once again making the metropolitan movie morning such a great success.

Liquor Licensing - Mini ChecklistAll Clubs survive with the proceeds from Bar sales. It is an important facet of Clubs. The following are just some of the things to consider with the Bowls season well underway. Taking a few moments to check your Club’s compliance may save you a hefty fine!

v Approval of your committee by CBS ( see September 2014 SA Bowler article) v Mandatory signs are posted:

o All clubs must have a Section 113 sign (Persons under 18 will not be served) in every area of your Club as per your approved plan;

o Clubs that are licensed to serve alcohol after midnight need to have displayed at every entrance a Section 112 (Persons under the age of 18 must not remain on the premises after midnight);

v Optional signs posted, such as:o Responsible Service of Alcohol;o No ID - No Service;o House Policy;o Have you been asked to leave?o Unattended drinks will be collected.

vTraining of Bar staff - Everyone who serves alcohol, whether Volunteers or paid staff, must be trained in your Club’s Liquor Management Plan. Those serving in a ‘Full’ Club Licensed venue must have completed an accredited ‘Responsible Service of Alcohol’ certificate and a copy of the certificate kept in the Clubs SA provided Liquor Records Folder;

vIs a copy of your current Liquor License by the front entrance?vIs your approved Licencing Plan in the Clubs SA Liquor Compliance Folder or readily available

should an inspector visit?vDo you have available soap and hand towel in both the Bar and Kitchen?vHave you obtained Safety Data Sheets (SDS) from your Chemical supplier and keep them with

your Chemicals?vThere have been 2 liquor price rises this year – have you adjusted your bar prices accordingly

– not always popular, but better than raising green fees! How did you score?

If you would like a complementary Liquor Compliance check please call Greg Fisher at Clubs SA on 0420 455 305 or email [email protected].

May all your clubs be successful on and off the Green.

Please have a safe and enjoyable Festive season.

Important changes in the method of educating and assessing National Umpires, Measurers and Markers will commence on January I, 2015.

Already in place is the new and very simple method of re-accrediting Umpires and Measurers which involves a basic greens test and answering approximately five questions relative to each, thus eliminating the previous lengthy supervised paper which took approximately three hours.

This new procedure is competency based which means that emphasis is placed on what the candidate can do rather than what they know.

However, all umpires should be familiar with the Law Book and especially how to use the index when needed.

A new Law book will also be introduced on January 1 with a new format which will include some changes to the Laws and the Domestic Regulations.

Bowls SA will be asking all Educators, formerly known as Tutors, to conduct a refresher in their respective areas to make all umpires and interested persons aware of these changes.

Educators commenced their training in November and December and Eyre Peninsula and South East Tutors will have training sessions in their respective areas during December and early January.

There are now three modules which make up the National Umpire course:

MARKERS

This can be done separately and on completion of an approximately four hour session candidates will receive a certificate and card. The course is comprised of on-green training and laws relative to marking. There is no exam paper but simply an assessment of the candidate’s ability and their knowledge of the few laws involved.

MEASURERS

The other stand-alone module is to become a Measurer which is basically the same as the Marker module with on green work and knowledge of the laws relating to measuring and once again a certificate and card is issued. The time for this module is also approximately four hours. The Marker and Measurer modules may be done in any order.

NATIONAL UMPIRE

To become a National Umpire a candidate must have completed both the Marker and Measurer modules which leaves only a few laws for candidates to become familiar with.

These laws may require some work on the green or the use of some other resource. This module should also be completed in four hours with a similar method of assessing after which the candidate will become an accredited National Umpire.

Completion of any or all of the modules will give a member a greater understanding of the laws and how the game should be played.

With no lengthy exams required for any of the modules Bowls SA encourages interested members to become accredited, which will not only qualify them to provide a service to their Club but will open up the opportunity for involvement at a higher level if they wish to do so.

Bowls SA also encourages Umpires to consider becoming an Educator which would qualify them to provide ongoing training of Markers, Measurers and Umpires in local Clubs.

Educators will be trained to allow candidates who may not be fully competent in one area to have another try later in the session or on another day which eliminates the fear of not passing.

For further information please contact Bowls SA on 8234 7544 or email [email protected]

Commercial Team Update

SOCIAL MEDIASocial media has given all sports great opportunities to expand their reach to new audiences that were previously difficult to engage with. Bowls SA has embraced social media (such as Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and LinkedIn) to develop more sophisticated forms of communications and interactions on a wide range of platforms.

With greater access to the internet via mobile devices, along with content being able to be produced and shared instantly, the use of social media has enabled Bowls SA to reach new markets and develop broader and larger fan bases.

Bowls SA’s Facebook page currently has 2116 Likes exceeding our goal of 2,000 Likes by December 31. Please encourage your Facebook friends to Like us.

Bowls SA utilises social media to promote events such as the Seniors Supa Series, Coaching & Officiating Revision Days, Berry Bowling System Synthetic Greens Maintenance Seminars and State Events.

There are also many Clubs that are engaging with one or more social media platforms. Many small clubs have websites which they find difficult to regularly maintain and update and there are real efficiencies and advantages in using social media as their online presence. A Facebook page can be updated easily and in an instant get information to members and supporters.

Sharing content posted by Partners and Sponsors and other items of interest such as newspaper articles is another benefit of social media which can assist sports to connect with a new audience, raise team and individual’s profiles and potentially open the sport to different markets and participants.

However, Clubs need to understand the following in order to maximise the potential of social media:§Who it is attempting to engage with?§What are the outcomes it wishes to

achieve?§How will it control its usage across

its organisation?§How will it measure the success

and/or failure?

Whilst effective utilisation of social media avenues can provide positive outcomes, the reality is that there can also be negative aspects which may be damaging, therefore Clubs need to exert ‘positive’ control over entities and individuals that are aligned with their

Club. In order to achieve this Clubs are encouraged to develop policies and guidelines with regard to professional and personal use and obligations toward their social media usage.

Unbiased Opinion

THE LAMENT OFTHE INJUREDThe law in South Australia in respect

of injuries sustained either at work or through a motor vehicle collision

have changed dramatically. The effect is to diminish rights, and in some cases eradicate them altogether.

It is important that people are aware of these changes because in the past you had an ability to claim damages where someone caused you injury in a motor vehicle collision for their negligence which became a buffer and a security for not only pain and suffering but more importantly economic loss going forward. Those avenues of economic security will no longer be available to the injured, even though someone else is responsible for putting you in that position.

In the Workcover area the new Act is geared towards reducing an unfunded liability, to almost a negligible number. The fact that that had no real relevance in the first place other than when it wanted to be used politically has been lost in the debate. As at 1 July 2015 it appears to be that for current claims your injury will be deemed to have occurred on that date and that the maximum amount of income maintenance you will then receive for that injury is 2 years. If you can actually manage to work in that period but after that time become incapacitated you will not be eligible for income maintenance.

Payment of medical bills for current

claims are also going to finalise on 1 July 2018. Major surgery may be able to be claimed at a later date.

The new Workcover Act is a far cry from the acts of the past.

It is important that people are aware of these changes. If these changes are truly reflective of the views of the community then we no longer care as much for those who are injured at work and in motor vehicle collisions.

Their injuries will exist irrespective of changes to the law. What are they going to do? Where are they going to go because the injuries in many cases will affect earning potential and quality of life?

The Federal Government has made changes to the ability to obtain welfare payments. Welfare payments fall short in any event from having a properly constituted claim for damages to attempt to put you back or at least secure your position so you can move forward with confidence financially into the future despite the event that can in many cases devastate lives.

It will mean that private insurance, total and permanent disability insurance and income maintenance insurance will become more attractive and more necessary for many workers. The premiums for that of course are not insignificant and you would be paying that as well as paying a premium for your motor vehicle registration and third party insurance.

Introduction of a Life Time Care and Support Scheme is a commendable scheme but that will cater for a relatively small number of claims a year. The National Disability Insurance Scheme is also a bright light for the injured and those with disabilities but these schemes should be complementary to those that exist not instead of them.

Those suffering from significant injuries still deserve the right to choose their future, not have it dictated or imposed upon them and by taking away the rights that you are in fact limiting the issue of choice.

If you are involved in a motor vehicle collision post 1 July 2013 you should still get advice. The government campaign

regarding the changes was so significant that many in the community do not think they have any rights to claim. That is not the case. It is just that the claims are now far more difficult and in many cases the right to make a claim will become unviable and untenable for many, beyond medical bills.

A third wave of change regarding the injured is also to come. At this time there is a further report being rendered to the Federal Government before the end of this year which will talk about what happens to people when they are injured in circumstances other than at work or as a result of motor vehicle collisions.

If that report is consistent with the changes that we have seen in South Australia do not expect there to be a strengthening of the rights of the injured. It is highly likely that there will be an attempt to move towards an administrative scheme, restrict review rights and treat all injuries the same and that is the one thing that administrators do not seem to understand. Injuries affect people differently and should be compensated accordingly.

Coming into Christmas/New Year I am afraid as a person who has dealt with the injured and the effects of incidents upon them be it at work or in motor vehicle, I do not have much cheer.

I should turn my mind to more pleasant matters such as learning to bowl and joining the local club!

WOW! Look at Eudunda now

The pride of a community is usually captured in its bowls team and Eudunda is no different with their bowling club. So when their old uniform was looking tired it was decided to bring a bit of colour, life and vibrancy back into the club and the uniform. The questions were ... who, what, where and how much? Local bowler, Matty Jones, put pen to paper and created a very attractive and eye-catching design. Sports Centre being the Bowls SA preferred supplier was suggested as the first port-of-call when it came to producing the uniform.

To change your complete uniform and image with a minimum of fuss means that there has to be a real passion and pride between the club and its supplier and in this case to make the transition a smooth and painless one. Sports Centre was chosen because it ticked all of the following important boxes:

1. Licenced Bowls Australia supplier.

2. Bowls SA preferred supplier.

3. Local with 40 years of experience.

4. Track record of doing total club fitouts.

5. Australian made quality standard and service.

6. Referral and recommendations from other clubs.

7. Small quantity and quick turnaround on repeat orders.

8. Reliable and experienced supplier.

9. Extensive range of products from the one supplier - polos, jackets, pants, vests, wet weather apparel, caps, hats, socks, shoes, signage, bowls cloths, printed table clothes and other miscellaneous products.

10. Superior design service that analysis your wants and needs and delivers.

11. Samples provided.

12. The ability to allow your club to choose between Australian made or overseas range.

13. A bowls cavalry of 6 specialised bowls representatives across SA who deliver personal service as required.

Once it was agreed upon, an attractive, vibrant end result was realised, it was a relatively simple process for the transition making both parties very happy. Looking at the above photo there is no doubt Eudunda Bowling Club has been launched into the future and is winning many admirers but best of all intimdating the opposition with their new look.

Sports Centre ticked all the boxes.

You Be the Umpire

During a game the umpire observed that a player had again foot faulted after previously being given a warning. The umpire called for the bowl to be stopped but before this could be done it disturbed the head. What should be done?

The jack is right against the boundary. The last bowl of the end comes to rest on its own rink very close to the jack. As the thirds commence determining the result of the end, the bowl falls of its own accord and pushes the jack over the boundary line. One skip wants to replace the bowl and jack and the other skip claims the end is dead. Which skip is correct?

As a result of a drive the jack flies in the air, rebounds off the rink number on top of the bank and finishes on the rink 18m from the mat line. The umpire is called and asked what should happen?

Lead of team A delivers a jack which passes the 2m mark at the opposite end. Skip A picks up the jack before it stops, assuming that it won’t reach the ditch and places it at the 2m mark. Skip B objects to this action. What should happen?

Player A delivers a fast drive which splits the jack in half. They then want the replacement jack to be placed in the ditch where they believe it would have come to rest. Is player A correct?

Past Presidents

The following is a snapshot of Past Presidents activities from around the State since the commencement of

the bowls season.

LOWER SOUTH EAST BRANCH Players travelled to Coleraine, Victoria to compete for the Russell-Mitchell Shield. However, Victorian Western Districts Past Presidents proved too strong and they retained the shield 137 shots to 101. The best performed team for Lower South East was Max Richards (Millicent), Maureen Elton (Millicent), Beryl Versluis (Mount Gambier) and Ron Ploenges (Mount Gambier RSL).

SOUTHERN BRANCH A combined opening day with their Annual Charity Day proved successful with 83 bowlers and friends in attendance at Yankalilla. Four branches of the SES on the Fleurieu Peninsula were the beneficiaries of the day. Two games of 12 ends were played and overall winners were from Langhorne Creek – Bill Tonkin, Judy Zanker and Gerry Roberts and from Milang Kevin Newton.

Bill Tonkin, Judy Zanker, Kevin Newton, Gerry Roberts and Margaret Borlase (President)

LOWER NORTH BRANCH Forty Past Presidents playing two games of bowls had a great day at Two Wells with winners for the day Bev Molloy (Two Wells), Peg Sharrat (Lyndoch), Ian Rhode (Tarlee) and Bernie O’Reilly (Kapunda) which was decided by drawing cards.
