Along with representatives from all State and Territory Associations, President Ivy and I attended the Bowls Australia Strategic Forum in Melbourne in February. A number of topics

were covered including a collaborative approach to dealing with the decline in bowling club membership and developing an alternative product to complement the traditional forms of the game that is attractive to current and prospective members and participants.These are also a strong focus of the Bowls SA Strategic Plan: 2010-2013 and all State and Territory Associations have confirmed their commitment to work together to achieve these important objectives. Whilst in Melbourne I also had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Bowls Australia Awards Night held at the Crown Entertainment Complex. Bowls SA was fortunate to have Development Officer Kelli Wray as a finalist in the Professional Administrator of the Year award. Although Kelli was pipped in the award by Michael Beaumont, a very experienced administrator from New South Wales, all at Bowls SA are very proud of Kelli’s achievements. Kelli is passionate about the sport, especially junior development, and those that have had dealings with her attest to her enthusiasm and dedication to ensure that the sport prospers in the future. Kelli is to be congratulated on the work she does with clubs to support new and existing participants to develop their skills and enjoyment of the sport.

The Greenkeepers’ Education Forum held during the 2010/11 MGA Men’s Country Carnival was a great success with over 70 Greenkeepers and Club Administrators from around the State in attendance.Presentations on disease management, nutrition, renovation of greens and machinery maintenance were covered by experienced Greenkeepers Nigel Ryan, Kevin Lewis, Brad Porter and Russell Edmunds, with an open question and answer forum following the presentations. Bowls SA would like to thank Nigel, Kevin, Brad and Russell for giving up their time. Feedback on the night was extremely positive and a survey has been sent to those who attended with the aim of improving and growing the forum in the future. The stage is set for the 2010/11 Bowls SA Awards Night to be held on Saturday 21 May 2011 at the Bay Function Centre at Glenelg.The night has grown over the last couple of years to provide an excellent opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of bowlers and a fantastic culmination to the season. Those that have attended have been emphatic in their praise of the night and I encourage all members to make up a party with your fellow bowlers and book a table – you won’t be disappointed. More information is available on Page 6.Finally, Board and Committee nominations are currently being called for and I strongly encourage any member that feels they have something to offer to consider nominating for one or more of the positions. The closing date is 25 March 2011 and further details are available on Page 6. All the best for the remainder of the season.

PRESiDEnT’S message[ [With the eastern States

devastated by one disaster after another I am sure many

of you have, like me, shed a tear over the loss of life and property during this sad time. Many Bowling Clubs have also experienced horrific damage and are urgently in need of assistance. It is fitting that Bowls Australia have established a Disaster Fund which will be there for clubs that need help now and in the future. In South Australia we have been fortunate, so far, but in the past have been well aware of the damage natural disasters can bring. With this fund in place it will be reassuring to know that support is available when it’s needed most. While a lot of clubs are struggling financially even a small raffle on a pennant day would help someone in need. To those clubs that have already given, thank you and more information is available on Page 27.South Australia is known for experiencing hot summers and the Bowls SA Extreme Weather Policy was established to guide Clubs and Associations through these periods of extreme weather. While many State events have been played and won, heat has delayed pennant games and events such as the Under 35 Singles from progressing to the Finals.I urge everyone to take care and familiarise themselves with the guidelines in the Extreme Weather Policy, available on the Bowls SA website www.bowlssa.com.au.It is pleasing to note that overall this season’s Bowls SA events have been well supported and in particular the Men’s and Women’s Country Carnivals have

had significant increases in entries.With most Clubs now playing off to determine their Singles and Pairs Champions I encourage the winners to enter the Bowls SA Champion of Champions events. Entry is free and the winners of the Bowls SA titles are now eligible to go on to represent South Australia in the prestigious National Champion of Champions event.It was disappointing to realise that some Clubs are not aware of the Administration Manual produced by Bowls SA and distributed to every Club in late 2009. The Manual is a valuable resource for Club administrators and officials and includes forms, procedures, policies and the Bowls SA Constitution and By-Laws and I encourage Club administrators to keep this resource available as a handy reference tool.Recently, I had the pleasure of opening the annual Australian R.S.L. Championships at Marion Bowling Club and with representatives from most States attending. The event was a huge success and congratulations go to the organisers.In the Australia Day Honours a richly deserved acknowledgement of a Medal of the Order of Australia was bestowed on Bowls SA Independent Director John McDougall. John has been a long standing contributor to the sport at all levels and with his broad wealth of knowledge has been invaluable to the administration and governance of our game.Thank you John for the support you have given me personally, and to the sport.I trust everyone has had a great pennant season and if you’re lucky enough to have reached the finals, good luck!

John McDougAll oAM

A richly deserved honour of a Medal of the Order of Australia was awarded to John

McDougall, Independent Director on the Board of Bowls SA, on Australia Day, 26 January 2011. John has worked tirelessly for the sport of lawn bowls holding voluntary positions at all levels including Club President and Secretary at Region and State level. He also served as Executive Officer of the Royal SA Bowling Association Inc (1994-1998) and (2000-2002) and acted as the General Manager of Bowls SA (2000-2002) as it prepared for the merger of the men’s and women’s Associations.At National level he is a past Director and a Past President of Bowls

Australia and was also a Director of World Bowls and a past President of the Asia Pacific Bowls Association. John served a term as Board Director (Metropolitan) from August 2009 until September 2010 and rejoined the Board as an Independent Director in October 2010. John’s willingness to volunteer for all manner of tasks and his vast knowledge of all facets of bowls administration are invaluable in the governance and the sustainability of the sport in South Australia. Without volunteers of the calibre of John sports and community groups would struggle to survive and we congratulate John on this well-deserved recognition.

event has grown over recent years to include a range of awards and provides an outstanding opportunity for members’ achievements to be formally acknowledged by their peers. This year will see the announcement of the inaugural inductees into the Bowls SA Hall of Fame which has been established to recognise and promote the outstanding sporting achievements of our greatest bowlers, and encourage everyone to reach their potential.

STATE PAirSThe 2010/11 Bowls SA State

Pairs was held in late December with Janet Cocks teaming with Penny Landherr to take out the

Women’s title while Simon Dorr and Ashley Klose combined brilliantly to secure the Men’s.Wet and windy conditions greeted the final 16 at Salisbury with sectional play deciding the Semi-finalists to compete the next day. Monday saw a vast improvement in conditions and in Semi-final action Crystal Brook’s Rob Perry and Lin Inglis took on Kadina’s Bruce Hines and Roger Spry while Mt Barker’s John Corner and Steve Jones did battle with Payneham’s Simon Dorr and Marion’s Ashley Klose. After securing a 24-12 win, Bruce Hines and Roger Spry were ready to challenge Simon Dorr and Ashley Klose in the Final after their 19-9 win over the Mt Barker Pair.Meanwhile in the Women’s first Semi-final, Port Vincent’s Merrilyn Lovelock and Denise Barnes took on Modbury’s Cherie Morgan and Prospect Broadview’s Denise Caulfield.In the other Women’s Semi-final, Kensington/Marryatville’s Jackie Gardiner and Di Green (Lockleys) went up against Prospect-Broadview’s Janet Cocks and Kensington/Marryatville’s Penny Landherr.Cocks and Landherr convincingly defeated the Gardiner and Green pairing 27-11, while Morgan and Caulfield accounted for the Port Vincent combination of Lovelock and Barnes 17-11.The stage was set for the Finals and on a perfectly prepared Greg Daulby track and after a 1-4 start, Morgan and Caulfield put their noses in front and led before Cocks and Landherr fought back to get on level terms. From 9-all the game changed and with Cocks on

fire they found themselves 19-9 ahead with two ends to play. A good end from Morgan and Caulfield only resulted in a two on the 17th and with eight required on the last, the task was simply too hard. With final scores 21-11, Cocks and Landherr were deserving winners of their second State Pairs title after previously claiming the title in 2008/09.While the Women’s event was tight early, a big conversion early from Ashley Klose set the tone for the Men’s Final with Dorr and Klose simply brilliant for 18 ends. Kadina’s Hines and Spry fought gallantly but whenever they held shots the Klose/Dorr pair simply had all the answers. After five attempts at the title, Dorr and Klose went through the event with 10 wins from 10 starts to be the standout pair and claim their first State Pairs title.While the weather was out of anyone’s control, excellent bowling and first class facilities at the Salisbury Club made for a memorable event.

The Under 18 boy’s and girl’s State teams recently competed in an Under 18 Quad Series at the Warilla Bowling Club, 90 minutes

South of Sydney. The series is played annually between NSW, Victoria, WA and SA.Day one saw SA take on the Victorians in Singles, Fours, Pairs and Triples. In a strong display by the Victorians our boys were taught a lesson in all disciplines, while the SA girls provided a stronger showing, winning the Pairs and Triples. After the significant lesson handed down by the Victorians, the SA Under 18s had to pick themselves up against the improving WA outfit. To our developing group of player’s credit, they outplayed the WA team winning the boy’s Singles, Pairs and Fours and the girls were successful in the Singles, Pairs and Triples.The final day saw the SA team take on the very strong NSW team to decide final placings in the series.The learning continued for our State under 18 boys and girls. Having fought hard but losing against Victoria and then beating the improving Western Australians, our team was now faced with the dominate NSW outfit. In a continued display of quality bowls NSW proved to be far too strong with SA’s only success coming in the girl’s Triples. The boy’s Pairs went down by one shot in a tight struggle but all other teams were soundly beaten.

Despite the loss coaches Leon Crane and Faye Luke were pleased with the approach of the boys and girls and believed the experience will serve them well for future challenges.

Holdfast Bay’s Riina Bradbrook has taken out her sixth Singles

title in 12 months with a win in the women’s 2010/11 TigerTurf State Singles over Kensington/Marryatville’s Jackie Gardiner. In the final 16 rounds, Bradbrook flew through her section with three straight wins which included a 21-9 win over 2009/10 Runner-Up Judy Brooks. She continued her domination with a 21-3 win over Yorketown’s Maureen South before finishing her day with a tight 21-15 win over Riverton’s Margaret Keast.Following a late withdrawal, Janet Cocks received a Bye in her first sectional game

before taking the honours against Berri’s Kerry Treloar 21-15 to set up her sectional win and a 21-17 win over Bordertown’s Peta Mattys sent her through undefeated. Other final 16 action saw Renata Callisto push through her section undefeated to claim Section 1 while Jackie Gardiner’s 21-7 win over the previously undefeated Katrina Miller clinched Section 2 on a countback.Early on the final day Bradbrook trailed Prospect-Broadview’s Cocks 19-24 in their Semi-final before she won the next four ends to earn her spot in the Final with a 25-24 win. In the other women’s Semi-final, a four from Jackie Gardiner on the 10th end against Grange’s Renata Callisto gave her the breathing space required for a 25-20 triumph. In the Men’s event Modbury’s Craig Mills claimed a 25-18 victory over Clarence Gardens’ Brian Jenkins in a great display of fine touch draw bowling and power hitting. On the penultimate day Mills coasted through his first two games with a 21-16 win over Wallaroo’s Steve Eichenberger and a 21-6 win over Keith’s Geoff Hams. However, in the final game he met a storm in Grange’s John Nicolai. Nicolai matched brute power with fine touch to head Mills early and with a good lead, there was still a slim chance of Eichenberger taking the section after he defeated Hams 21-8. A couple of late numbers from Mills however got him the shots required, even though Nicolai took the honours 21-16, Mills claimed the section from Eichenberger by one shot.Section 2 saw Blake Fiebig stumble against Mt Barker’s David Faehrmann 21-16 in the second game before taking care of Renmark RSL’s Malcolm Inglis to claim the section on shots with two wins.Other final 16 action saw Brian Jenkins defeat Adelaide’s Scott Thulborn 21-18 early and after a 21-2 win over Wallaroo’s John Page, Section 3 was almost sealed. In the Final a break of 7-1 in favour of Jenkins gave him a 14-10 lead after 15 ends before Mills finally found his range and scored counts of three, two and three over the next four to set up his win. When you are of Primary School age and living with your family in a country region of South Australia

the weekends are often taken up with a wide range of sporting competitions. For the boys and their fathers there is cricket in the summer and football in the winter and for the young girls and their mums netball and basketball and for both genders tennis and hockey. There is always a club to be joined and a game to be played. It is the way of the world and the history between rival townships has taken on legendry status over many generations of competition. While the action has been hot on the football field and on the netball court the older generation has satisfied itself with the more gentile game of lawn bowls. The areas around Port Augusta, Quorn and Stirling North are no different to so many others but in both Quorn and the 101 year old Port Augusta bowling clubs the grandkids are joining their “Nannas” and “Poppas” at ‘Night Owl’ competitions and getting a taste for a sport which is rapidly bridging the generation gap. 10 year old tylah Jackson, the eldest of three children, has always been surrounded by a sporting environment with her father Andy and mum Tina involved in area football, netball and cricket. They are a respected, close knit family and Tylah had her first taste of lawn bowls while partnering her “Poppa”, charlie Jackson and other family members in the local night series. She is one of a new breed within our sport and is the first indigenous girl bowler to be involved in the Henselite Junior Development Squads. Franks a 14 strong group of enthusiastic youngsters from the Port Augusta area are learning the rudiments of our great sport while enjoying a fun family experience. They are about to form a sub-group of the Lower North Hi-Jackers Junior Development Squad, which currently caters for juniors from Eudunda, Kapunda and Freeling.Jackson is tall for her age which isn’t surprising as two of her Uncles stand at 6’6” in the old terminology. Over the last two years she has had metal pins inserted in her hips to ensure correct alignment as she grows. The second of these operations occurred in July last year and these will not fuse until she is 15 years old. In the meantime she continues to bowl while anticipating a quick return to the basketball court. Tylah is one of two squad members who attend school at Stirling North Primary and she bowls with a size “O” heavyweight.The significance of her achievement from an indigenous perspective is something that she will come to recognise over time but the importance of the occasion has not been lost on her coach nor on her family. With three other Port Augusta members, Karen Franks sat the Club Coaching Course in 2009 under the tutelage of Peter Gageler. At that time she was the youngest member of the club with the least amount of experience but, from achieving her aim of obtaining a Coaching Certificate, her path has had one purpose.“My thoughts were always focused on a junior competition and school based bowls” she explained. “I was of the opinion that if I didn’t do something now I wouldn’t have anyone to bowl against

in five years time. Our sport is aging fast and I have only been bowling for three years. I am 41 now and hope that when I am 70 I will be competing with the kids of today.”When asked of Jackson and her future Franks was full of praise for her young pupil. “Having the first aboriginal junior lawn bowler coming from our town is a great achievement not only for me but for Tylah too. Aboriginal kids don’t have many sportsmen and women to look up to or to strive to be. She could well be the next kid from the bush that other young kids look up to. I am sure that there are more Tylahs out there in our community; I just haven’t found them yet.”Having spoken to Franks and parents Andy and Tina there is no doubt that Tylah will have every opportunity to excel in her chosen sport. For so many junior competitors in all spheres there is no replacement for family involvement and with fellow bowlers “Poppa” Charlie (Quorn) and Aunt Elsie (Port Augusta) on the sidelines the future looks rosy for a young girl with her life ahead of her.

Yorke Peninsula has brought to a halt the previous domination of Fleurieu & KI and taken out the 2011 Bowler’s Den Men’s Country

Round Robin in a powerful four day performance. Day One action at Modbury saw Yorke Peninsula defeat Eyre Peninsula by 11 shots in round one before producing a dominant display in Round 2 to annihilate South Eastern by 62 shots. Ian Hatcher, who teamed with Corey Wildash, Don Bennett and Robert Scott to ultimately take out the title of top rink of the event, also produced the individual performance of the Round Robin with a 46-9 win over Ken Crisp. Current two time champions Fleurieu & KI started the carnival with two losses and never recovered over the next three days.The following two days saw Prospect- Broadview and Brighton play host and the continued strong showing of Yorke

Peninsula from Rounds three to five. Arguably the match of the carnival however was set for Round six with second placed North Eastern biting at the heels of Yorke Peninsula, only one win behind. A win to North Eastern would have made things very interesting on Friday morning while a win to Yorke Peninsula would seal them the 2011 Round Robin. In a true showing of their overall strength, Yorke Peninsula were unforgiving in their big test, taking all five rinks to smash North Eastern 121-79 and claim the Round Robin trophy for the first time since 2008. Once again the Hatcher/Wildash combination worked a treat with a good 29-15 win over Chris Kearns.With the overall result complete but the top rink award still up for grabs, the heavens opened on Friday morning at Hawthorn. Play got underway as programmed but as the 14th end of all games was completed, the remainder of the morning session was abandoned.

Top rink was awarded to Hatcher, Wildash, Bennett and Scott and Region Manager Jim Sharratt responded to some kind words from Event Manager Kenn Rogers and Event Sponsor Kane Coulls for The Bowlers Den.Special mention must also go to the rink of Steve Jones, Adrian Dibben, John Corner and Peter Broughill from the Eastern Region who achieved an eight on Wednesday afternoon at Prospect-Broadview.

Both Regions then carried on where they left off on Wednesday at Somerton with two wins each to see Yorke Peninsula just in front after Round four. But the carnival then changed at Salisbury on Thursday morning when Eyre Peninsula came out of the blocks firing against Yorke Peninsula; claiming a 13 shot victory. Pam Edmunds’ 24-10 win over Beryl Williams, and Fleurieu & KI’s 37 shot victory over North Eastern brought Yorke Peninsula back and put Fleurieu in front by shots up.Both Regions then claimed a win on Thursday afternoon to set up the perfect scenario on Friday morning with both Fleurieu & KI and Yorke Peninsula sitting atop the ladder on 10 points, with Fleurieu 51 shots ahead. Round seven at Edwardstown on Friday morning saw the Regions drawn against each other in a winner takes all match, and despite light drizzle, play commenced with all eyes set on the battle.

With all rinks tight, Valda Bartlett took control of her match against Beryl Williams and claimed a 25-13 victory. Shirley Koch and Tonie Ross also claimed minor victories for Fleurieu & KI to see them get over the line by 10 shots and claim back to back Women’s Country Round Robins.To keep up the tradition of close finishes for the week, Fleurieu’s Shirley Koch and Yorke Peninsula’s Di Milner went into Friday morning undefeated for the coveted top rink award.

A win to both ladies on Friday morning saw both rinks finish the carnival undefeated with Koch teamed with Coralie Sheldon, Raelene Johnson and Ebba Ness taking out the award by two shots over Di Milner, Annette Rowntree, Coralie Herrmann and Wendy Venning.A big thankyou to all clubs who hosted the four day event and to all the umpires and event volunteers that gave up their time to be involved in yet another very successful Country Round Robin.

The MGA Men’s Country Carnival kicked off in perfect conditions on Monday 7 February with record numbers

in all three disciplines of the event.The Fours event started the Carnival and within a blink of an eye, last year’s Champions and Runner-ups had been eliminated. Following post-sectional knockouts and up to four knockouts on the Thursday, the Semi-finals were set.Semi-final one saw Lobethal’s Wayne Zilm team up with Woodside’s Simon Masters, Andrew Day and Brett Norman take on Crystal Brook’s Peter Cousins, Tom Wardle, Andrew Greig and Phil Perry while Semi-final two matched up BHAS’ Mark Underwood, Barry Magor, Ray Baverstock and Barry Scarman in a ding-dong tussle with the awesome foursome of Andrew Hill (Berri), Steve Eichenberger (Wallaroo), Phil Spiers (Wallaroo) and Rob Flavel (Port Pirie).Both Finals started at a cracking pace and didn’t disappoint the strong crowd at Marion. After the dust settled, Zilm

survived a last end scare to defeat Cousins 14-13 while Underwood’s four was superb in their 13-7 win over Hill.The Fours final was delayed by several hours as Underwood and Magor did battle in the Men’s Pairs Semi-final in what would distinguish the two as the dominant players of the Country Carnival.

After a slow start, Schroeder matched his power, hitting with precision touch draw bowling to win his way through to the Final with a 25-14 victory.His opponent in the Final was Port Germein’s Neville Leue, after he defeated the evergreen superstar from Port Lincoln, Gerado Perone in a nail biter. Leue scored 23 single shots throughout the course of the match to see him trail 23-24 before playing a short end towards the clubhouse. With his only multiple of the match, Leue snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after Perone missed with weight on his final bowl to set up a great final with Schroeder.After trading blows early, Leue pushed out to a 19-16 lead before

PAIrSBerri’s Andrew Hill and Wallaroo’s Steve Eichenberger will meet BHAS’ Barry Magor and Mark Underwood when the MGA Men’s Country Carnival Pairs final is finally played at a venue and date to be advised.Due to both combinations’ success in the Carnival, which saw the two pairs meet as Third and Skipper in the Fours Semi-final, it was simply impossible to fit in all disciplines on the Monday at Marion.Semi-final action saw two very tight matches pairing up the men for the Final. In Semi-final one, Eichenberger and Hill dropped the first two ends against Cummins’ Barney Lynch and Malcolm Siegert before drawing back level at 4-4 after six ends. The match then see-sawed through to 10-all after 14 before Eichenberger and Hill claimed a solitary shot on the last to once again make the Final of the Men’s Pairs with a 11-10 victory.Semi-final two was a similar match with Magor and Underwood taking an

As the 2010/2011 MGA Men’s Country Carnival got underway on 7 February, Adelaide Shores drew its Lucky Dip Competition for carnival participants staying at the

West Beach leisure precinct. Mr Brian Burnett of Waikerie won a 2 night stay in a Deluxe Bungalow at Adelaide Shores Resort while Mr William Williams of Port Pirie won 2 nights’ accommodation in an Executive Cabin at BIG4 Adelaide Shores Caravan Park. Both men clearly enjoyed the Carnival - Brian commented that it is great each year “to catch up with some old faces and meet some new ones too” while William is planning to return to the Carnival and the Caravan Park next year. Congratulations to the winners and stay tuned for the Adelaide Shores Lucky Dip draw for Women’s Country Carnival participants.

If you are an avid bowler who is looking for some of the best facilities in the country and a place to settle you could do worse than head for

Moonta which is situated in the Copper Triangle of South Australia. The area around the township was first settled in the early 1840’s by British pastoralists but conditions were harsh and it wasn’t until 1861 with the discovery of copper deposits that there was any major development. The township was established in 1863 and by 1917 the Moonta mines had proven to be the richest in South Australia.The founder of the Moonta Memorial Bowling Club was one Lt Colonel Dr Arthur Clayton and it is worthwhile dwelling on a man whose contribution was critical in the setting up of the first facilities. On 17 November 1921 he invited all men interested in the game of bowls to his residence for a meeting which led to the formation of the Club under the guidance of himself as President and Mr Moffat as Secretary. In the future he would serve as President until 1926 and would be made a Life Member in 1961. Prior to this, Dr Clayton had been discharged from the Army in December 1919 and was made a Lieutenant Colonel in the Australian Military Forces in 1920. At the same time he was Area Medical Officer at Moonta and Kadina before being placed on the unattached list in 1922. He was one of the community’s more prominent citizens and was Mayor of the Moonta Corporation in 1924-26 and 1939-40. By February 1923 members had prepared and planted two five rink greens and constructed a 24 feet by 16 feet brick clubhouse. It was the beginnings of what is now a highly successful and respected club.History tells us that the first participation by women in our great sport was generally in the early 1950s and so it was with Moonta. In those early days

the rules of involvement were strict with the ladies having limited access to the greens and “no use of the clubrooms”. Despite such restrictions one Mrs Shardlow invited an interested group of women to meet in the Unity Hall on 17 November 1950 with a view to forming a Women’s Bowling Club. By design or luck it was the exact same date that the men had met 29 years earlier. Twenty ladies were involved and the first President voted in was Mrs D Bagshaw. The women’s Club opened on 7 November 1951 complete with a long drop toilet at the rear of the clubrooms. In this day and age such segregation could never occur but many of the women look back and smile at a time when the light weight “long drop” became the butt of jokes each New Year’s Eve. With the help of four strong men the corrugated iron unit found itself in areas throughout the township including the park and on one famous occasion on George St in front of the National Bank.With the men and women members working together a new clubhouse was built during the winter of 1956, but with membership growing this building was demolished and replaced a mere 12 years later in 1968. However, in 1985 discussions again took place on enlarging the clubrooms and in 1987 the toilet facilities were torn down and rebuilt and a new kitchen was added. As time goes by the members continue to improve the facilities. After a two year delay and a series of frustrations, while awaiting planning approval, new extensions to the clubrooms were

completed during 2010 and on Saturday 8 January 2011, 160 members and guests gathered at the Club’s new facility to celebrate the 90th Birthday of the Moonta Memorial Bowling Club and to officially open new clubroom extensions. In attendance was the Mayor of the Copper Coast District Council, Mr Paul Thomas and both Men’s President, Don Underlin and Lady Vice President, Pauline Cross who acknowledged the support given by the Council in assisting the Club to achieve its aims. On the night 50 years Continuous Club Service Awards were presented to Mary Roach and Beth and Lloyd James by Ben Scales, Bowls SA General Manager, and Annette Rowntree, Region 2 Councillor presented Kay Philp and Madge Graetz with their 90 year Certificates. Guest Speaker on the night was racing legend John Letts who entertained the crowd with amusing anecdotes of his life and invited members to pose for photographs with himself and the Adelaide Cup which he had brought along for the night. And what of the Champion bowlers over the years? State titles and Country titles are part of the rich background at Moonta and in the 90 year history of the Club there have been 33 individual Men’s Singles Champions and 21 Women’s Champions. For the record Ian Hatcher, who is well known throughout the bowling fraternity and has served as a State Selector leads the men with 12 and for the women Edna Giesecke has picked up eight Singles titles.

ELIGIBILITY All players must be fully registered members of country Member Clubs under the jurisdiction of Bowls SA at the time of entry and at the time of playing in the events, with the exception that if the member has played in the metropolitan pennant competition as a selected player they are no longer eligible to compete in the Country Carnival unless this occurred prior to transferring to a country Member Club.FORFEITS & WITHDRAWALSIf necessary to withdraw or forfeit owing to unforeseen circumstances, players must notify the Event Manager and Venue Manager.If a team or Singles player fails to fulfil a commitment without justifiable cause in the opinion of the Match and Program Committee, they shall be liable for a penalty not exceeding $110.00 (inc GST) per player.Failure to comply with this directive will result in each player incurring the fine and becoming ineligible to compete in all State and Pennant competitions until payment is made to Bowls SA.In the event of a forfeit the winner will be credited with 2 points and 5 shots. REPLACEMENTSIn the case of a team member, who is entered in Fours, Pairs and Singles withdrawing before the commencement of the event, different replacements may be made in any event to avoid forfeits.Replacements must comply with the Eligibility clause, as above, must be authorised by the Umpire and Event Manager and may play any position. Domestic Regulations 4.3SUBSTITUTESSubstitutes must comply with the Eligibility clause, as above, must be authorised by the Umpire and may play any position except Skip. Domestic Regulations 4.7.1 and 4.7.2.3.STARTING TIMESAs listed in the Playing Schedule. Players are required to arrive at the venue club at least 30 minutes before play is due to commence.LATE ARRIVAL – TEAMRefer to Laws of the Sport of Bowls - 46.1.2SCORE CARDS & SCORINGThe names of EVERY player in the side must be recorded on score cards. Score cards are to be retained by the Club Secretary until the Finals are completed and must be readily available on request.The team with the greatest number of points shall be declared the winner. Winners of each game receive 2 points, a Draw 1 point, Loser nil. EQUALITYIn the event of an equality of wins, to determine the winner of a section the Bowls SA Rules & Conditions of Play for State Tournaments will apply, as follows:In sectional games, 2 points are awarded for a win, 1 point for a tie and the entrant with the most points shall be the section winner.

Should two or more entrants tie with the same number of points, then the entrant with the greatest shots margin shall be the winner.In the event of two or more entrants having an equal number of points and shots up, the winner shall be the entrant with the least number of shots scored against them.If two entrants are still equal, the entrant who won the game in which they met shall be the section winner.An entrant/s who receives a forfeit in sectional play shall be credited with a win (2 points and 5 shots).Any entrant who forfeits the last sectional game, without justifiable cause, shall be disqualified from the remainder of the Country Carnival tournament.In Singles sectional play, the number of ‘shots up’ prescribed for the rounds shall be the maximum number of shots accorded to a player when calculating the margin of shots for the purpose of determining a section winner.LAWSThe ‘Laws of the Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark Second Edition’ shall govern all games.LUNCHESVenue Clubs will provide a knife and fork meal and dessert or fruit at a cost of $10.00 per day for ALL COMPETITORS.EXTREME WEATHER the Bowls SA Extreme weather Policy available at www.bowlssa.com.au shall apply.Inclement (wet) weatherIn the event of inclement (wet) weather before commencement of play, Singles players or team Skippers, are to contact the Club that they were drawn to play at on that day to determine if their greens are closed. In the event of inclement (wet) weather after play has commenced players must remain at the Club to get instructions from the Event Manager. If necessary, due to inclement (wet) weather, to close greens at anytime on the first day of an event, the event will be cancelled. If necessary, due to inclement (wet) weather, to close greens on any subsequent day of an event, play will be postponed and players will be notified of the rescheduled date, time and venue. Players MUST NOT contact the Bowls SA Office in the event of inclement (wet) weather.Extreme heatEvents will commence, as scheduled, however if considered necessary due to extreme heat, at the discretion of Bowls SA and the Event Manager, the Conditions of Play may be modified.Where play has commenced on a day of extreme heat or it is deemed that the weather conditions have deteriorated, play may be stopped by appeal of a player/team to the Umpire of the Day or Event Manager.If the Umpire of the Day or Event Manager

determines that conditions warrant cessation of play they may act on their decision without right of appeal. Play will be cancelled for the day if it is not possible to resume after one hour from the time of the last stoppage.Bowls SA reserves the right to cancel or postpone a State Event, two days prior, if the forecast temperature is deemed to be excessive during times of prolonged extreme weather.CANCELLATION AT VENUEIf the Match and Program Committee has not determined that all play is to be cancelled and if weather conditions deteriorate at a Club which has not declared its greens unfit for play for the whole day, the decision whether or not play shall start, due to the condition of the greens, shall be the sole responsibility of the Club’s greens manager or his proxy.All players must remain at the Club until the Event Manager at Bowls SA has called off games. Games may be transferred to another Club nearby and played on a reduced basis.CANCELLATION DURING PLAYWhen play has commenced and inclement (wet) weather conditions deteriorate, the Umpire may stop play on appeal by a player in Singles, Skip in team games or after consultation with the home Club’s greens manager or his proxy. The greens manager’s decision would be in regard to the condition of one or all greens at the venue. If play has been stopped it shall not be resumed without the Umpire’s permission. Play will be cancelled for the day if it is not possible to resume after one hour from the time of the last stoppage.SMOKINGNo player shall smoke on the playing surface. It is the responsibility of every player to observe this policy and the host Club officials to ensure the comfort of all players in this regard. The Bowls SA NO SMOKING ON THE GREEN policy applies.MOBILE PHONESMobile phones are not permitted to be used on the green. PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCTThe Player Code of Conduct included in the Bowls SA Member Protection Policy shall apply.PENALTIESThe Bowls SA Board may impose penalties or fines on any player or team for any action or behaviour in breach of the Conditions of Play or Laws of the Sport of Bowls, or where actions are considered to bring the game into disrepute. Any player or team that undertakes a game plan or strategy to achieve a result other than a win in a particular game being played will be liable to Bowls SA imposed penalties or fines.OTHER DETAILSVenue Clubs are required to provide Managers and Umpires on all days allocated with the exception that the Bowls SA Event Manager will provide officials for the Finals.

Bowls Australia, in conjunction with its State and Territory Associations, has launched a public appeal to specifically

aid the sport, with donations currently being sought to assist clubs affected by the recent floods and other disasters in reopening their doors. A central pool has been established, with 100% of all sums to be redirected to those clubs in need. The establishment of the Fund is in addition to the announcement of 20% of all ticket sales from the $125,000 Australian Open in Melbourne being provided to the Queensland Premier’s

BOWLS DiSASTER RELiEF FUnDFlood Relief Appeal. Bowls Australia Chief Executive Officer, Neil Dalrymple said “Bowls clubs across the nation are the heartbeat of many communities,” Mr Dalrymple said. “As a result, it’s vitally important that we look after our own in times of need. “I’d encourage everyone to get behind the concept and help where they can, be it via an individual donation or through a fundraising activity that is directed back to the Bowls Disaster Relief Fund.” Clubs will be able to access the funds via an application process through Bowls Australia.

wAlKErVIllE PrIMAry School In ActIonThe Active After-school Program was very successful in the final term for 2010 with seven schools running clinics. After a six week program the Walkerville Primary School headed down to the Walkerville Bowling Club to participate in a range of activities. New AASC Coach Kate Smith ran the clinic very successfully and the teacher was so impressed with the program and the Coach that the school wants this to be an ongoing activity, demonstrating how clubs can benefit from these programs.

twIlIght nIght A hugE SuccESS Approximately 40 juniors converged on Ascot Park on Friday night 28 January for the first Bowls SA Junior Twilight Night. The Twilight Night is a new concept that will become a feature of junior activities across the State, and it got off to the best possible start when, in almost perfect conditions, the juniors showed off their skills – and show them off they did!Players were split into teams based on their Junior Development Squads, with eight of the nine squads represented. Pleasingly, there were a number of first time participants, from the Ascot Park Night Owls competition, with all of them expressing afterwards just how much fun they had. In fact, three of them formed a team that won two of their three games, which highlights the importance of clubs targeting juniors from their own Night Owls activities.A special rule was introduced for the competition, that is, having to play to where the jack is rolled, which caused some great entertainment and proved challenging for some players. This adds a different element to the nights, and keeps the juniors on their toes and

interested throughout the games. The night was won by the Western Warriors Team 2, consisting of Danielle Fuss, James Bodnar and Aaron Fuss. The Eastern Jets, who had won the last two junior competitions (JDS Launch Day and Junior Classic), came in a close second, with Emma Hughes and Alyssia Brown playing consistently across all three games.The next Twilight Night will take place on Friday 4 March at Hawthorn Bowling Club. All juniors will receive information and a registration form in the coming weeks. After the success of the first one, it is one that you will not want to miss.

coAchIng rEVISIon DAyBowls SA conducted our first Coaching Revision Day of the year on Friday 4 February at Lockleys Bowling Club.There was a wonderful turnout from the coaching fraternity with over 50 coaches attending, eager to update their knowledge and learn new tips and techniques.The star guest speaker was Sports Psychologist Geof Boylan-Marsland, who spoke to the coaches on the importance of, and use of, sports psychology in Bowls.The coaches were also treated to a presentation from Terry White on the benefits of DVD coaching, with Terry explaining the various techniques

In a cliff hanger Cherie Morgan and Wayne Haskett of the Modbury Bowling Club took out the AER Mixed Pairs Challenge at the Australian

Open in Melbourne when they defeated Tasmanian’s Greg and Barbara Smith on a tiebreak. South Australia and Tasmania dominated the event contesting four of the six finals, and it was the second time that a Modbury Pair have won the title.Jackie Gardiner and Mike Dunk won The Challenge two years ago and this time around SA clinched it with the same format, a State player as lead backed by a top division pennant Skip.The Tasmanian pair from North Launceston accounted for the highly favoured NSW pair of rising stars Dawn Hayman and Jamie Johansen 8-9, 8-7 with a 6-0 win in the Semi-final tiebreaker.In their Semi the SA duo squashed the

hopes of Victoria’s Neville Rodda, in his quest to add a second jewel to his Australian crown after having just won the Australian Pairs title with Australian International player Lee Schraner.Neville teaming with clubmate Jane McMenaman, faced a 4-10 towelling in the opening set, but a 12-2 win in the second forced the tiebreak, which was clinched by Haskett and Morgan by one shot. In the Final SA fired the first salvo with a 7-6 win in the opening set but lost the second by a shot in a contest where both sides displayed brilliant draw bowling.In the first end of the three end tiebreak Morgan hugged the jack with three bowls but Glen Smith moved the centre bowl to sit beside the jack and hold shot. Haskett, not to be outdone, shaved through the gap to sit his bowl on the jack for a single.On the second end the jack was again

under fire and the measuring tape had to decide the winner - again a single going to SA.Hopes were up for the Tassie pair on the third end when Haskett trailed the jack to their advantage but on the final count they could only raise a single, giving SA its second AER Challenge.The Challenge, which supports the work of the The Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AER) in its work to change the drinking habits of Australia, is in its sixth year and is one of the most popular mixed events for club bowlers.The event played under the auspices of Bowls Australia starts at club level and moves through to regional, State and National finals.

StAtE tEAMS SElEctEDThis year’s Australian Sides Championship will provide a challenge for our State men’s and women’s teams. As usual, and as expected, to gain selection in these teams requires commitment, the ability to be at the peak of your game at the right time in the season, to be a contributor on and off the green in supporting your fellow team and squad members, and probably most importantly the ability to perform the role you have been selected to play, whether Lead, Second, Third or Skipper.The 2011 Australian Sides Championship will be played from 2 - 5 April and the Super Sixes Series 6 – 7 April, at the Nelson Bay Bowling and Recreation Club. With late withdrawals from Scott Taylor and Jeff Aworth an opportunity arose for a debut player, and congratulations go to Carl Schapel (Grange) on his inaugural selection. Carl, who hails from Millicent, is hungry to show his skills and having approached his involvement in the Development Squad with enthusiasm, was recently added to the State Squad and impressed Selectors at recent State training. We wish Carl and all the men every success.The selection of the women’s side was equally challenging, and emphasis was placed on ensuring a balance between our strongest and most united team. With a Silver medal at the 2010 Sides Championship the ladies have unfinished business.

SEASon 2011-12 PlAnnIngPlanning is well underway for season 2011-12, and a full review of High Performance programs has been conducted and presented to the Bowls SA Board. The recommendations regarding the future High Performance programs, endorsed by the Board and by Bowls Australia, include placing a focus on coaching and identifying and developing potential High Performance Coaches. Emphasis will also be placed on providing skill development opportunities for our players through a winter program. Sessions dealing with players’ technique, ability to consistently draw, to play a running shot as required and to drive with a high percentage return will be provided. Sports psychology, fitness and conditioning (specific to the needs of bowls), diet and basic goal setting sessions will also be included.This investment in our most talented bowlers and their commitment to invest in themselves should further improve the quality of our representative bowlers. The program has been shown to the South Australian Sports Institute and they are pleased with the direction Bowls SA is taking, and it is hoped that our relationship with SASI can be strengthened over the next few years.

LOY CARROLL TROPHY & MULGA CUP

The SA v Victoria Test series for the Loy Carroll Trophy and Mulga Cup for our senior men’s and women’s state teams was played

in January at the Moama Bowling Club.Our senior State bowlers made the nine hour drive to Moama on Sunday 2 January and after a roll up the next morning, overseen by State Coaches Dave Stockham and Faye Luke, the players were as well prepared as circumstances allowed for the first Test which commenced that afternoon.With mixed results from both the men and women, Scott Thulborn’s four dominated with a 24 shot win over Matthew Flapper’s four, but this was not enough to get our men over the line as the fours of Ashley Klose and Wayne Ruediger were soundly beaten; the Victorians gaining a narrow two shot win which was decided on the last end. The second Test saw the SA men dominated by an assertive and fired up Victorian unit and all three rinks went down in a substantial 43 shot loss. The lunch break provided an opportunity for the men to reflect and gain some words of wisdom from Dave Stockham and the third Test saw our men back in a more competitive frame of mind with all rinks in an arm wrestle with the Victorians. Both Scott Thulborn’s and Wayne Ruediger’s teams gained victories, but unfortunately this was not enough and with another last end decider the Loy Carroll Trophy went to the Victorians.The men were great on Day 3 of the Test series and showed real character to maintain their focus when it could have been so easy to switch off. Led again by strong results from Scott

Thulborn’s four and well supported by Wayne Ruediger’s rink, the men gained a convincing 32 shot win in the fourth Test. This good form continued in the fifth Test with a close contest that on this occasion went our way. Ruediger and Thulborn again had good wins.Our State women found a similar tough opponent in the first Test. Penny Landherr’s four was the shining light with an eight shot victory over Paula Woods’ four. Kerry Treloar’s team lost in a hard fought match by five shots and Jeanette Hill’s four had a day they would like to forget getting a bowling lesson from Gayle Edwards’ rink. The evening provided an opportunity to honestly reflect on the day’s performance and this was taken up. The second Test brought a revitalised performance from our women, seeing a 20 shot victory. Jeanette Hill’s team bounced back with a nine shot win, Penny Landherr’s four just got over the line by one shot and Kerry Treloar’s team ensured a sound victory by winning by 10 shots. The third Test saw another strong result with Kerry Treloar and Jeanette Hill both recording team wins resulting in a 13 shot victory and a 2-1 lead in the mission to retain the Mulga Cup.The women also had the objective of maintaining a psychological dominance over the Victorian women leading into the Australian Sides Championships to be held in April.With the Victorian women desperate to square the number of test wins, the fight was on in the fourth Test, and with SA resisting all challenges they gained a marvellous 26 shot victory. Treloar’s team with a 21 shot victory, well supported by Penny Landherr’s and Jeanette Hill’s fours provided the much sought after result and the added bonus of going to an unbeatable 3-1 lead and the ultimate prize of retaining the Mulga Cup.While the lunch break provided an opportunity to enjoy the victory, it also provided the Victorians the opportunity to take stock and with greater resolve of the home team the fifth and final Test went to the Victorians. While it was disappointing to finish as we did the SA women certainly dominated the contest when needed to secure the Mulga Cup.

The South Australian Parliamentary Bowling Club was officially formed in the Premier’s Room, Parliament House

Adelaide on 7 December 1960. The Club was created in response to an invitation by the New South Wales Parliament to participate in the first Interstate Parliamentary Bowling Carnival which was held in Sydney in May 1961. Since inception, the Club has had 118 members including five Presidents of the Legislative Council, six Speakers of the House of Assembly, five Premiers of the State, six Leaders of the Opposition and six Knights of the Realm. The Hon Bruce Eastick is the longest serving member, having been with the Club for 41 years, 10 years as Club President and six years as Club Captain.

To mark its Golden Jubilee a special celebration was held at the Holdfast Bay Bowling Club on Tuesday 7 December. An extra-special meeting of the Club was followed by lunch and a game of bowls against an invited Bowls SA side. Bowls SA President Ivy Kluske accepted an invitation to field a team as part of the celebrations. A mix of players from various bowling clubs formed a first class Bowls SA team which was a convincing winner on a truncated day’s play. To commemorate the day and in gratitude for her attendance and that of the players from Bowls SA, the Parliamentary Club presented Ivy with a suitably etched glass trophy.Being the day when Adelaide received its highest recorded rainfall in any 24 hour period, all eyes were on the

weather as the dark clouds rolled in. While the rain arrived to put an early end to the day’s play with only nine and 10 ends completed, it arrived too late to save Australia at the Adelaide Oval.As the rain, thunder and lightning took hold the patron of the South Australian Parliamentary Bowling Club, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce, the Governor of South Australia arrived, with Mrs Scarce, for afternoon tea and to launch a short history booklet on the Parliamentary Bowling Club. The Governor was presented with a Parliamentary Bowling Shirt as a mark of appreciation by Club President, Ivan Venning MP.

2region 2MoontaKay Philp celebrated her 90th birthday on Saturday 20 November only days after competing in the Moonta Division II Green side which defeated Wallaroo, 84-65.Kay has always been a keen sportswoman, playing tennis and hockey, but started playing bowls in 1973 because her husband played. She has only missed a couple of pennant games since when she went on a cruise. Her greatest achievement was winning the Yorke Peninsula Association Pairs in 1980/81 – the last time it was played all in one day. With her partner, Muriel Holman, they played six games, starting at 9.00am and finishing at 10.00pm. She was also successful in the Club Championship Pairs and Fours. Kay has also been President, Secretary, Committee member, Tournament Committee member and Selector. Even at 90 Kay is still actively involved in the Club, enjoying the company of fellow bowlers.

3claude tuckerComing to Stansbury in 1975 from Curramulka where he had won Club Singles and Pairs titles, Claude continued his brilliant career with further wins as Club Pairs Champion in 1997-78 with Harold Dodd and again in 2005-06 with David White (known as ‘Dad and Dave’ both now over 80).He also added Club Singles Champion titles in 1977-78, 1978-79, 1993-94, 2005-06.However, the absolute highlight of his bowling career was in the 1977-78 season when he won the Club Singles,Club Pairs, Handicap Singles, Association

Champion of Champion Singles, Division Champion of Champion Singles and received the SA Country Bowler of the Year award.This amazing record has never been matched on the Yorke Peninsula.Claude has volunteered on a number of levels being Club Secretary, Club, Association and Division Selector and Umpires Tutor for 34 years, Umpiring for World Bowls at Lockleys in 1996.Before a large crowd of well wishers Claude was presented with a Super Veteran’s badge at his 80th Birthday celebrations on 19 December 2010.

yorketown carnival Exceptionally strong winds confronted players on all three days of the Yorketown Carnival and did not present ideal bowling conditions for entrants that had come from as far as Langhorne Creek and Roxby Downs.Winners of the Mixed Fours were Steve and Sandra Redding and Dave and Lorraine Norton, with Runners up Gerald and Beth Young and Maureen and Barry Braund. The Men’s Medley Fours followed by Pairs (2-4-2), and a final game of Fours, the following day saw Dave Norton, Phillip Mathews, Dig Taheny and John (Robbo) Robinson win the title from Bill Tonkin, Crockett Tonkin, Alan Ford and Peter Tonkin. Let’s not forget the NABA prize won by Merv Bryant, Robin Spratt, John May and Roy Bullock.Coming in first in the Fours Day were Bill Tonkin, Peter Tonkin, Rob Sampson and Crockett Tonkin with Runners-up ‘Modbury 2’ made up of Juan Vargos, Graeme Ettridge, Bernie Mullins and Craig Mills.

region 3On Australia Day dedicated BHAS Bowling Club member Brian Evans was presented with a Bowls SA 50 Years Continuous Club Service Award in recognition of his long and valuable contribution to the Club.Brian commenced bowling in 1960 with co-workers, filling in for a few games of pennants each season. This involvement got him started and his record now boasts 634 Saturday pennant games with an impressive 19 Division One pennant badges, and Club Pairs, Triples and Fours Champion and Country Carnival titles. He has also served in Committee roles for 20 years, including stints as Treasurer for 14 years and Selector for 15 years. Brian can turn his hand to most things such as mowing the greens, Umpiring, and helping to organise tournaments. He was the instigator of the first open tournament ‘Brambles’ which is now known as ‘Tall Stack’ and served as Secretary and Selector for Upper Northern.

region 7Pt ElliotOn 17 December the Norwood Football Club’s Senior Squad visited the Port Elliot Bowling Club for a game of bowls to ‘unwind’ after a strenuous training weekend on the Fleurieu Peninsula which had included a 25km run on the Heysen Trail. Although the players enjoyed their time on the green after the rigours of the physical weekend, they demonstrated that as bowlers, they made better footballers!

region 8tarleeOn 7 December Tarlee bowlers awoke to find not only many houses and sheds flooded, but their bowling green submerged in up to 4cms of red mud. The 100mm of rain overnight caused paddocks adjacent to the town to wash through the streets, overflowing into properties, as it made its way to the Gilbert River. After digging a ditch to drain the water greenkeeper Frank Gorey mustered members to scrape the mud into the ditches before it dried. Next day others had the task of removing the fast drying mud from the ditches and replacing it with sand. This quick action gave the green an unexpected top dressing and it is now back to an excellent playing surface.The water and mud flowed on into the Gilbert River, which then caused wide spread damage to houses further downstream at Stockport.

Maureen BentleyAt the New Year’s Day Triples Tournament, Maureen Bentley was awarded Life Membership for her services to the Koolunga Bowling Club. Her career at Koolunga began in 1967 and continued until 2006 when she moved to Clare

to be closer to medical facilities for her husband Duncan.Maureen played her first game in December 1967 and during her time with the club she was Club Champion 12 times and runner up 10 times. She was President eight times, junior and senior Vice President many times and Delegate to Division 3, Region 8 and Associations. In 1986 Maureen accredited as an Umpire, she was also a Selector and Team Manager, and as Tournament Director raised much needed funds for the club. Her skills ranged from making the club flag, through to laying carpet and being regularly seen behind the mower cutting the banks and surrounds. She even took charge of painting the clubhouse inside and out.Maureen has been a quiet achiever, with many of the things she did not becoming apparent until she left the club. region 10 toorak BurnsideThe culmination of last year’s Metro League pennant win, a new coach and the advent of new players, have the Toorak Burnside Club a buzz with a new resilience.Promoted to Premier Two, Club Coach Mike Cotton has instilled a winning attitude; the results showing that they are no easy beats, being placed in 5th position after the first round of the pennant season and with a bit of luck could have been lying in second spot.The future looks bright as the second side is well placed for promotion to Metro 1 due to regular players stepping up.The Club has weathered the storm of a major fire, utilizing the grounds area to bring a carnival atmosphere to the pennant and social sphere.Fortunately the greens were not damaged by the fire and the green keeper, Rowdy Edmonds continues to prepare a wonderful track under difficult circumstances. In keeping with the progressive nature of the Club an updated version of the club uniform is under consideration for the 2011/12 season.

After three games on Monday and a further game on Tuesday morning, the coordinators announced the top 16 pairs to continue in the knockout rounds.The Quarter and Semi-finals were fought over six ends with Gary Miles and Luke Pietersma defeating Steve Grant and Steve Foster 6-2, and Paul Daminato and Mike Hocking defeating Ray Dienelt, from Alice Springs, and Darren Farmilo 8-3.A great Final was contested by Paul Daminato and Mike Hocking against Gary Miles and Luke Pietersma with Paul and Mike being successful after two long, hard fought days.

region 12 west lakesIn hosting their annual ‘Pink Day’ on 7 January the girls at West Lakes excelled themselves yet again.120 ladies dressed in various shades of pink made an amazing picture on the greens. The day started with a ‘spider’ using an effigy of a breast as a target which was perfectly appropriate as $200 was raised for the McGrath Foundation to aid breast cancer research. This was followed by two games of 12 ends with a fine lunch between the games, served on tables ablaze in pink. There were prizes for the best dressed and the best hat.A table laden with surprise gifts for sale all wrapped in pink helped raise the money for this worthy cause.A team from Tranmere led by Shirley Willis won the day.Well done girls – and we look forward to next year’s ‘Pink Day’.

On Australia Day 2011 former champion bowler cathy Vluggen was presented with the District Council of the Copper Coast

citizen of the year Award. For those who have met Cathy over the years the honour will come as no surprise, while for others her story may well provide the catalyst for a positive future.

Cathy grew up in Port Victoria (Yorke Peninsula) and attended school at Minlaton. At the age of 14 a massive stroke confined her to a three month stay in hospital and a rehabilitation program which would re-educate her in the simple tasks of walking and talking. One can only imagine the feelings of the teenage girl who with the help of her mum and teachers returned to school and after a move to Mypolonga completed her studies which took her through to year 12 level. In 1983 Cathy moved to Adelaide and obtained work at Royal Adelaide Hospital and in 1987 she was presented with the treasured Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and began Night Owls at Murray Bridge Bowling Club. After two years of ill health in 1998-99 she was confined to a wheel chair and in 2000 while visiting the Royal Adelaide Show was recruited to lawn bowls by Shirley Blackwell and Kenn Rogers who she said “would not take no for an answer.” Participation in our sport has brought with it many highlights for a woman whose courage and tenacity are unquestioned. Titles she has won over

the years include the Women’s Pairs Gold Medals at the International Stoke Mandival Wheelchair Sports Federation World Championships at Mojacar, Spain and the 2002 Far East and Pacific Games in Busan, South Korea.For many years Cathy has volunteered in wide ranging areas of society and in 2009 she and husband Con moved to Wallaroo. At present she is involved with assisting in 10 important areas in the Wallaroo Township and was nominated for the “Citizen of the Year” by members of the Wallaroo Bowling Club.When asked how she had settled into life in the Copper Triangle she was full of praise for the members of her new club. “They have been absolutely amazing” she commented. “It’s like I’ve walked out of one great bowling club into another. Remembering that I no longer bowl, they have still accepted me with open arms.”Typically her comments after receiving the award included; “You know it’s not about me it’s about all those wonderful people who have helped me along the way!”

Suppression Orders have become quite a bugbear for the media. If you believe everything you read these days, including

a recent article by John Hartigan, in The Advertiser on 15 February 2011, you would think that the whole administration of justice was at risk because from the media’s perspective there are too many suppression orders being made. It is unfortunate that the Courts do not have their own publication to stress their point of view. You cannot blame members of the general public for not coming to grips with various sections of the Evidence Act or not being aware of the reasons why these orders are granted. The reasons for suppression orders are often themselves suppressed.Media reports suggest that Adelaide is “suppression order city”. Such colourful language reflects the very delicate balancing of positions that is necessary in understanding the purpose of suppression orders.When I began practice well before Facebook and the internet there were quite a few grounds upon which suppression should be granted. The same cannot be said of today’s laws regarding suppression of evidence.In the article referred to above, Hartigan suggests that suppression orders are an affront to open and transparent justice, which he says is fundamental to the rule of law in the community. It is very true that as annoyingly superficial as the media sometimes is, from my perspective, it is a good thing they exist in regard to making public that which may otherwise remain undetected and without justice being achieved. An example of this would be the

Watergate scandal from the seventies where Bernstein and Woodward brought down the administration of the most powerful country in the world at the time.In more recent times when the governments have used national security readily for suppressing information, investigative journalism has been very important in questioning the validity of these steps. I agree readily that they are an important safeguard, particularly against big and secret governments.However, the suggestion that suppression orders constitute a lack of open justice is laced, in my view, with self interest. The Courts have always been and will always be a great place for sources of material for journalists in which to ply their trade.If you look at what suppression orders can be made in SA, it reflects matters such as:

(a) preventing prejudice to the proper administration of justice;

(b) preventing undue hardship to victims or witnesses.

The parties can appeal any order and the courts need to report the orders to the Attorney General’s Office within 30 days if they are made.As will be seen there is no basis for alleged offenders to be protected from their identity being provided to the broader community except incidentally.True enough, 25 years ago you may have been able to get a suppression order on the basis that Grandma’s going to be very upset with the news that you have been charged with killing Grandpa.That no longer is a consideration.Suppression is really related to the victims and to witnesses, and to the administration of justice to ensure that the accused gets a fair trial. It is the last of those points that the media tends to forget or give inadequate weight when arguing that the making of suppression orders is excessive.To simply look at the numbers of suppression orders made is an irrelevant exercise. You have to look at the reason behind each one. Also, each State has different rules about when suppression orders can be made. This distorts the statistics. For example, between 2006 and mid- 2008 549 orders were made in South Australia compared with 54 in NSW which has narrower considerations.Similarly, in initial matters it is quite often the police who call for various

suppressions of evidence and information as they are concerned about witnesses being tampered with or their enquiries being affected. This is often the case in the early stages of prosecutions.Each and every suppression order needs to be analysed to see what the story is.A fundamental reason for suppression orders is that they should be made in cases where if they are not there, then there is a real chance that jury members will be adversely influenced.It is perhaps in relation to jury members that the suppression orders carry the most weight.Alleged perpetrators of crime are alleged sometimes to have conducted quite unusual activities well outside the norms of normal social behaviour.It is difficult enough asking a jury to be impartial and locate any evidence which proves the elements of the charge if a news version could affect their impartiality.The media have a tremendous and significantly important duty to play in the role of justice, keeping it open and transparent. The issue of suppression orders however is one where self-interest collides with wanting to tell a good story which sells papers.When next you hear the media complain about South Australia being the ‘Suppression State’ we should remember suppression orders have a place and are only obtained in appropriate circumstances, which, if the media disagrees, can always be appealed. The Court is always open and ready to listen to any such application and the media quite often make those applications at court hearings of their own volition.Far from the suppression city, it would be better if Adelaide was known as the city where everyone gets a fair go, and justice is administered properly.

Bowls SA remembers Jim Quinn, a champion bowler and a dedicated individual who contributed greatly to the sport of bowls in South Australia.Jim was a highly respected member who created a most impressive record during his bowling career. Jim joined the Hallett Bowling Club and began playing pennants in 1974-1975. Over the years he held many positions within the Club and his bowling ability was reflected in him winning the titles of Club Singles Champion twice, Club Pairs Champion six times, and the Mid North Men’s Bowling Association Singles Champion. Jim was awarded Life Membership of the Hallett Club in 1998.

At Association, Division and State level, Jim held positions with the Lower North Division and as a Country Councillor 1999-2001 and Executive Councillor 2001-2003 for the Royal SA Bowling Association, and Bowls SA 2003-2006. With the formation of Bowls SA Regions, Jim put in a great deal of work in helping establish the new Region 8 Lower North and was their first President and male Councillor. Jim’s contribution was acknowledged with Life Membership of the Mid North Men’s Bowling Association on 5 October 2008.

Whilst these games are closely fought, the end result is insignificant compared to the enjoyment and fellowship that is always highly evident.The recent match between the Metropolitan and Southern Branches was a perfect example. Played at the fine facilities of the Morphett Vale Bowling Club, from the moment Club President Trevor Julian handed over the Club to Southern President Don Guerin, the 80 participants had a great time. Southern had another decisive victory, and in handing the Craven-Nolan Trophy to President Don, Metro President David Plunkett was warm in his praise of the fine hospitality of the Southern Branch and Morphett Vale Club.Best performers for Southern were Mary Sefridge, Jake Fowler,

John Jordan and Keith Dix. Best for Metro were Con Harmer, Dave Roberts, Jim Linke and George Mutze.The Metropolitan Branch also suffered defeat at the hands of the SA Police Bowling Club, at the annual match played at the Holdfast Bay Bowling Club. A feature of the night game was the sausage sizzle which was available throughout the game and, as host, Police Club President Danny Fitzgerald explained, this would avoid the midnight indigestion which late night suppers can cause.However, Metro tasted some success when they defeated the Lower Murray and District Branch to win the Bruce Jennings Trophy. Played at the Mannum Bowling Club, Metro President David Plunkett enjoyed the unusual

experience of receiving a trophy, which was presented to him by Lower Murray President Barry Kirchner.Members are now looking forward to the 9th State Friendship Carnival to be played in April. The men’s Fours will be played over three days at Clarence Gardens, Lockleys and Hope Valley Clubs, with the women’s Fours at Lockleys, and Mixed Fours at Clarence Gardens on Friday.
