Welcome back to a new season of the SA Bowler. The off-season has seen a number of significant changes at Bowls SA. The Annual General Meeting in September

saw Ivy Kluske take over the role as President of Bowls SA from Bob Cooper. Ivy is the first female President of the organisation and brings over 20 years of bowls administration knowledge to the position. Bob has been a tremendous servant of the sport in this state over a number of years and he leaves the organisation in an excellent position after his terms in office. On behalf of the Board, members and staff of Bowls SA, thank you Bob. There have also been a number of staff changes in the office. Jeff Hammond and Shirley Blackwell have both moved on after significant contributions and we wish them well in the next stages of their lives. Bill Cornehls, who many of you would know from his highly decorated bowling career which includes a Commonwealth Games gold medal and a World Championship silver medal, has replaced Jeff as High Performance Manager, and Kelli Wray, who has just made her Australian debut, takes over the Development Officer’s role. Both Bill and Kelli will be outstanding assets to the organisation as they continue to build on the work of their predecessors. Travis Moll has moved from his role as Programs Coordinator to that of Marketing Manager and has been busy producing this, his first SA Bowler. Rhys Taylor has been appointed to the Programs role and brings to the position a real passion for the game and extensive bowling administration experience, having being involved at both Club and Association administration level; all of which will be a great benefit to the sport. The review of the Open Gender Policy has continued during the winter and it was clear from stakeholder consultation that there was a strong desire to have

some form of single gender competition available that operates in conjunction with an open gender option. As a result of this, Bowls SA has formally sought an exemption from the Equal Opportunity Tribunal to allow single gender competitions to be played in South Australia, in addition to an open gender competition, from the 2010/11 season onwards. The exemption has been lodged and we are awaiting a decision which should be received by the end of October. In the interim, the current Open Gender policy has been updated and will be implemented for season 2009/10. This policy has been sent to all clubs and is avaliable on the Bowls SA website.Bowls SA has just completed a review of its Constitution, with an updated version being adopted at the June Council meeting. This has been an extensive task and although constitution reviews are not always a high priority, they are important to ensure that the organisation is compliant with the Act. Thank you to the Constitution committee of Bob Cooper, Mike Brown and Brian Cooper for all their work.I encourage all Member Clubs to regularly review their constitutions and remind them that Bowls SA is able to assist with this process. It is also important to provide a draft to Bowls SA for perusal prior to presenting the document to members to ensure that it’s compliant with the Bowls SA Constitution and avoid any unnecessary changes. The start of the new season is always an exciting time and I wish you all the best for the coming season.

As I settle into the position of President of Bowls SA I would like to acknowledge the commitment that Bob Cooper has made to Bowls in South Australia in the

four years he was President. I appreciate the opportunity I had to work with him as a Board Director and recently as Vice President. Bob has been a great leader for our sport; giving an inordinate amount of his time to the governance of Bowls SA. Congratulations Bob on your achievements; best wishes for a happy and healthy retirement and thank you also to Rhonda for the support that she has given you and Bowls SA during your term in office.

I feel very humble in being given the opportunity to be President for such a large membership and would like to give members that don’t know me on overview of my background. I live at Wellington with my husband Des and we have two married sons, four granddaughters and two grandsons. I have been a member of the Jervois Bowling Club for over 40 years and first became involved with the SA Women’s Bowling Association in 1990 as a proxy Councillor for Division 6. In 1991 I became Councillor and in 2001 an Executive Member. When the merger of the RSABA and SAWBA took place in 2003 I was elected as a Board Director and have been Vice President for the last two years.

Kenn Rogers has been a Board Director for a number of years and acquired a wealth of knowledge across all areas of the sport; and I look forward to working closely with him in his new role as Vice President. With the assistance of the Board, Council and Staff we will endeavour to continue the legacy left by Bob Cooper to see all levels of the sport further develop and prosper.

Some very dedicated people have recently retired from their positions with Bowls SA and deserve acknowledgment. Board Director Jeff Brown who had also held the role of Match and Program Chair, Development Officer Shirley Blackwell, former Coaching Committee Chair Mary Burgess and Region 3 Councillor and former Board Director Carol Bammann after 19 years of

continuous service. All have served the sport with commitment and enthusiasm and I thank them for their many years of loyal service.

As a culmination to the 2008/2009 season an Awards Presentation was held at the Glenelg Function Centre. This was an excellent event and a great acknowledgment for Bowls SA State Event winners. Special thanks to those involved in the planning and organisation of the day and congratulations to the recipients of awards; well done.

Locally, an Under 18 practice session was held at the Jervois Bowling Club during July and I was impressed by the well mannered and talented group of young bowlers who will be the future stars of our sport. Thanks go to Leon Crane and Faye Luke for their leadership and also to the parents that support their children by attending and encouraging them to participate and improve their skills.

I believe bowls in South Australia is in a sound position with excellent prospects for the future, and with members support I trust we can meet all the challenges ahead.

Good Bowling to all for the coming season.

Bowls SA have tried a number of different alternative formats for the Awards Presentation in the past, with the positive feedback received after this year’s event indicating that the right format may have been found for this prestigious event. This year’s event was held as a luncheon and provided a wonderful opportunity for the elite players of the sport to get together and be acknowledged by their peers, sponsors, family and friends. Invitations had been extended to all State Event and Premier League winners and it was great to see country bowlers from as far away as Port Lincoln and Port MacDonnell amongst the guests who attended the day. Winners were presented with their event’s perpetual trophy and as a new initiative an individual glass trophy was given to each winner to keep as acknowledgement of their personal achievement. Brett Hurrell of the Hawthorn Bowling Club was named as Men’s Player of the Year after winning the State Singles Championship and finishing third in the State Pairs. Penny Landherr (Kensington/Marryatville) was announced as the Women’s Play of the Year after winning the State Singles, the Metropolitan Singles and partnering Janet Cocks of Prospect-Broadview to win the State Pairs. President Bob Cooper in

announcing the Players of the Year congratulated both recipients on their outstanding achievements throughout the season. Girls U18 Championship Singles winner, 14 year old Breeanna Dickson of Modbury, also had a year of successes winning the Girls U18 Championship Pairs with Renee McPharlin of Balaklava; the Mixed Pairs with Ian Miller (Somerton); and the Girls U18 Championship Triples with Renee McPharlin and Nicole Bartlett (Murray Bridge).A highlight of the Luncheon was the retrospective presentation of the first Australian Male Representative cap by Bowls Australia President Brian Marsland to David Hutton, grandson of the late Percy Hutton. While Percy Hutton was an all-round sportsman his greatest achievement in 25 years of bowls was to represent Australia with his long term bowls partner Howard Mildren in the Pairs Championship at the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney and thus being the first player to represent Australia in lawn bowls. The day was a great success and Bowls SA is committed to growing this annual event to provide a fitting recognition of the achievements of bowlers in South Australia.

The appointment of 2006 Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Bill Cornehls as Bowls SA High Performance Manager is a major fillip for the sport in South Australia. Bill brings a wealth of playing and coaching knowledge and experience with over 20 years involvement at the elite level of the sport throughout Australia. His performance in coaching roles since retirement from playing at a National level, including as the current Bowls Australia National Youth Coach, has been recognised by

the Australian Sports Commission with him being awarded a two year coaching scholarship to further develop his skills through the National Coaching Scholarship Program.Bill has enjoyed a celebrated international career, playing over 150 games for Australia, winning a Triples Gold Medal at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, three Asia Pacific Gold medals in 2003 and 2007 and was a Silver medalist in the Fours at the 2008 World Championships. He also played over 300 Tests for Victoria and Queensland and was a member of four Alley shield championship winning sides. Bill is looking forward to the challenges ahead in South Australia, working with the players and coaches to continue to build on the recent achievements of the Bowls SA High Performance program

and further develop his skills as a coach and sports administrator.Although taking a step away from the sport to spend more time with his wife and enjoy his retirement, former High Performance Manager Jeff Hammond will continue to have an involvement in the program, including a mentoring role with Bill as part of the National Coaching Scholarship. Events CoupIn a coup for South Australian bowls, three of the sport’s biggest tournaments will be hosted in Adelaide over the next three years. These events will provide the game with a genuine boost and a wonderful opportunity for spectators to witness the skills of elite level bowlers. Holdfast Bay Bowling Club will host the prestigious Australian Sides Championships in April 2010; the event featuring the top 12 men and 12 women from every State and Territory fighting out for the Alley Shield and the Marg Morris Trophy.

In 2011 the Lockleys Bowling Club will partner with Holdfast to host the Asia Pacific Championships, a precursor for when both venues host the sports’ pinnacle event, the World Bowls Championships in November 2012.

results; making Lower Murray overall winners on the day.It was a great hit out for both sides; a wonderful opportunity to showcase the Lower Murray talent and impress the State Selectors who will no doubt be considering some players for inclusion in future High Performance Squads.

Cowell VisitIn a new initiative ten men and six women from the High Performance Squads were selected to form a representative side to visit Cowell to play a combined side from the Upper North and Far West in July. The excellent Santa Anna greens were running approximately 13-14 seconds and with very little wind; the calm conditions continued for the whole weekend. The Fours, Pairs and Triples on Saturday saw the country boys a little rusty with most having very little practice in the off season. The result was as expected; a comfortable victory for the city side 51 - 17. On Sunday morning the coaches conducted a review of Saturday’s play discussing player’s shortcomings and stressing the need to play a more consistent attacking game with a higher percentage of effective bowls. Trevor Lloyd addressed the country side and they came out firing. The city side also hit their straps and onlookers were treated to a day of very high quality bowling; the City winning the day 11 – 8 but only after a fierce battle. The teams bonded together very well and were wonderful ambassadors for bowls; the visit enthusiastically received by all invloved with praise for the concept and the hospitality provided.

Lower Murray Visit On Sunday 12 July the Lower Murray Bowling Association played a series against sides consisting of 12 men and six women from the High Performance Squads at the Mannum Bowling Club. Playing on their excellent synthetic greens, the home sides dominated the morning games against the men winning 3-1, while the HP women were able to reverse the result. The Lower Murray men dominated again in the afternoon winning the Pairs and Fours, whilst the HP women continued their morning

High PerformanceHP Squad visit HorshamIn bitterly cold weather over the weekend of July 24 - 26, a composite side of Foundation and State Squad members played against a Victorian representative side from Western Victoria at the Horsham Bowling Club. The Victorian side had a solid win of 38 shots in the first Test, but South Australia regrouped playing much better in the second Test to result in a draw. The following day South Australia changed their game plan a little, showing a new determination winning the next two Tests. With the score being SA 2, Victoria 1 and a draw, an overall win for SA looked promising, but Victoria managed a win in the fifth Test making it all square going into the last Test.On Sunday morning Victoria showed their class and consequently won the series.Mark Ulpen was the most consistent player of the six games along with Adam Forbes and Andrew Hill also being stand-out players at this event. The success of the series was substantiated by an offer from the Warrnambool Club President to host a similar event at his club next year.

Battle at MilduraThe annual men’s competition between South Australia and Victoria at Mildura on 14 – 16 August resulted in a 6–0 hiding by the visitors and a victory for the SA men at last. The event is an opportunity for players to be exposed to quality competition under match conditions, and provided players with a forum to show their skills and press for State selection. The SA team comprised players from the State, Foundation and U25 squads and included Brett Hurrell, Rob Flavel, David Bell, John Nicolai, Colin Saltmarsh, Mark Ulpen, Steve Foster, Daryl Steinwedel, Ashley Hammond, James Gregory, Carl Schapel, Ken Willcox, Adam Forbes, Scott Nicholls and Ryan Digby. This was the fourth year of the six Test Series, and the first year the SA men have won. After coming from behind in the second Test, SA always seemed in control. Results:

SA 79 VIC 641. SA 70 VIC 582. SA 94 VIC 673. SA 110 VIC 674. SA 74 VIC 705. SA 85 VIC 726.

The women’s SA team comprised players Sue Bennett, Debbie Dennis, Tracy Crane, Michelle Stojak, Renata Callisto, Jackie Field, Jackie Barber, Liz Gooda, Jackie Gardiner, Sherri Nicolai, Lyn Prosso and Katrina Miller and were also victorious.

Adam Forbes in action at Horsham

Bowls SA Women’s Team for Mildura

The women started well by winning the first three Tests:

SA 66 VIC 531. SA 70 VIC 582. SA 69 VIC 573.

Victoria fought back in the fourth Test making a stand in the last few ends to come home the winners by two shots 57 to 55.The fifth Test saw a very determined Victorian side come out to play with resolve and win 66 to 50.This set the scene for an exciting sixth Test to be played on the Sunday morning and our ladies did us proud with some great bowling to give us the sixth test 78 to 63 to take out the series.

DevelopmentCoachingAs many of you are aware, there have been a number of delays with the implementation of the new National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) courses for Bowls. Back in May Bowls Australia were successful in gaining funding to accredit 120 new Club Coaches in South Australia which was great news.Unfortunately, one of the requirements was that the Federal Government chose the locations where the courses were to be conducted. The areas were Holdfast Bay, Lockleys and Port Augusta and while this was great for people in these areas, it made it difficult for people from other regions. In July the first courses were started by the approved Assessors and Presenters (A&P) in Peter Gageler and John Cranwell (with the assistance of A&Ps in training – Alf Boyle, Trevor Gregory and Deanna Amos). So far these courses have been very successful with 80 new coaches in the metropolitan area and up to 40 new coaches in the Port Augusta area being accredited. The role of the Coach is a vital one and with the success of these new courses it is hoped that every club will have a number of fully trained and qualified coaches that can provide assistance to new and current bowlers. If you need any assistance with coaching, please contact the qualified coaches in your club.Along with the new courses, the Bowls SA Coaching Committee is focusing on their successful Club Coaching sessions for clubs (check the Bowls SA website for more details), as well as the creation of Revision sessions and New Skills sessions for current Coaches. The aim is to provide current coaches with up-to-date coaching information, drills, practices and theories.

Junior DevelopmentBowls SA has just finalised a partnership arrangement with Henselite to sponsor Junior Programs in South Australia. The new ‘Flag Ship’ of this support will be the ‘Henselite Junior Development Squads.’Taking over from the ‘Club Bowls SA’ program, the Henselite Junior Development Squads (HJDS) will group young bowlers in geographical areas and support their growth and participation in the sport. Each squad will have a coordinator who will organise regular trainings and activities in their area. It is hoped that the squads will also meet regularly for inter-squad competitions and activities.

The benefits for junior bowlers include access to coaching, training and activities with other juniors, as well as clear pathways into U18 High Performance Squads and their local club. Included in their first season’s membership fee is a Henselite Junior Development Squad playing shirt with the Bowls Australia logo. This shirt can be worn at any Bowls Australia and Bowls SA events as well as HJDS events and activities. The shirt will also be a great promotional tool that identifies our bowlers of the future in a bright and vibrant fashion. The program is being finalised and all current junior Bowls SA Members will receive information on the program, as well as an application form, in the mail shortly. If you would like more information please contact the Bowls SA Development Manager on 8234 7544.Bowls SA are also looking for areas in which to start a squad, so if you have a number of juniors in your area and have a person willing to become a Coordinator, please contact the Development Manager.

Thanks Shirley After nearly nine years as the Bowls SA and SAWBA Development Officer, Shirley Blackwell, has decided to move on. Shirley has been an extremely valuable staff

member of Bowls SA and SAWBA over the last nine years and has seen a lot of progress in the sport; holding positions as the Under 18 State Coach, Development Squad Coach and more recently the Bowls SA State Women’s Coach. Shirley has enjoyed her time working with Bowls SA and will still have an active role within the sport. “Working with Bowls SA in development for the past nine years has been a most enjoyable experience. I have met a lot of great people coaching within clubs and conducting school clinics. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me in any way through out my career and look forward to seeing you all out there in bowls world! Best wishes to you all for the coming season.” The Bowls SA Board, Staff and members would like to thank Shirley for the contributuion she has made the sport and wish her all the best int the future.

The Alick Collins CupOne hundred and twelve students participated in this year’s Alick Collins Cup, a junior bowls competition conducted by the Hahndorf Bowling Club. Fourteen teams had been selected from 350 students coached by the Club prior to the Cup.This annual event is increasing in popularity with more schools expressing interest in participating. While the majority of students are coached by Hahndorf members, two additional schools, Lenswood and Gumeracha attend their local bowling clubs for tuition. The program originally commenced with eight students from two local schools and has steadily grown from there. An Active Club grant of nearly $5,000 made it possible for the club to cater for the large increase in numbers. With 224 bowls needed to conduct the Cup, many were purchased with part of the grant money.Under 18 State Coach Leon Crane watched the event and was so impressed with the talented youngsters that he has invited several to attend coaching with Bowls SA. Lenswood Primary School came through to win the event this year, with Littlehampton and St. Michael’s Lutheran Schools second and third.2010 will be the 10th year for this popular school event and plans are being drawn up to celebrate this remarkable milestone in junior bowling.

Children take up Bowls ChallengeOn Monday 15 June, Australian Barley Board, Grain Accumulation Manager, Michael Cousins congratulated the Blyth Bowling Club on receiving funds from the “ABB Grain Community Fund” and presented the certificate and bowls to Club President Bruce Farley in front of bowling members and school students. The ABB Grant was used to purchase six sets of junior bowls in three sizes, plus a Krak-a-Jack target mat which were put to the test straight after the presentation when Blyth Primary School students participated in the “Active After-school Communities” program. The new smaller bowls will be of great use to those with a smaller hand including participants of the After-school programs and the Club’s “Get on the Greens” program during the summer months. The bowls are also available for use by neighbouring schools and clubs by contacting the Club. The Club is always looking for new ways of attracting new members, and commencing at the grass roots is showing them the enjoyment and physical attributes bowls delivers.

Local member Brian Eime has been coordinating bowling sessions with students and he has been impressed with the talent shown. The Community Fund is part of ABB’s corporate commitment to rural Australia and since it was launched more than two years ago, more than $420,000 has been awarded to various projects to support the rural and regional communities. This is seen as an important commitment to giving something back to those communities.

In the early hours of March 21 a “000” alarm was raised that the Tanunda Bowling Clubrooms were ablaze. After the local MFS and CFS fire units controlled the fire it became evident that a break in had also occurred and amongst other things an attempt was made to open the safe. Further evidence indicated that the intruders torched the building prior to leaving, actually providing their own accelerant.Extensive internal damage, structurally and to furniture and fittings, resulted. Club records, memorabilia and honor rolls were destroyed. Walls, exposed timber, furniture and appliances were scorched or damaged by smoke, soot or water.Since March the Committee and members have been undertaking the painful task of assessing the damage and dealing with insurance claims and to date no outward progress in re establishing the clubrooms is evident.Members face the forthcoming 2009-2010 season without clubrooms, using limited temporary accommodation and facilities. Pennants, Social Events, Night Bowls and Tournaments will present a challenge to organisers.Whilst the incident has been devastating

to members and the local community it serves as a warning to others. Tanunda Bowling Club didn’t envisage such a deliberate act of arson could occur, but in truth it can happen to any club.Bowls SA is aware that despite the best of intentions in similar circumstances some Clubs might find themselves ill prepared for such a devastating event. All clubs, particularly bowling clubs, need to be aware and prepared for potential devastation by scanning their records onto computer files, taking photographs of Honour Boards and other historic items and storing all off-site. Update

security and install alarm systems and more particularly establish a comprehensive schedule of all contents of the clubrooms for insurance purposes; review your building and contents insurance figures as they could possibly be inadequate in the event of a fire. The Tanunda Bowling Club will “rise from the ashes” as it is a proud and established club, known for its tradition, memorable events and tournaments. In any event the club looks forward to new clubrooms in 2010-2011 when the members can enjoy a “schluck and a schnitter” with fellow bowlers.

Welcome to the inaugural edition of ‘Lifting The Lid’. On an ongoing basis, Bowls Australia, the nation’s governing body for lawn bowls, will provide the wider community with an in-depth look at the issues currently facing the sport from a national perspective. With a range of topics to discuss, the inaugural edition of Lifting The Lid places the microscope on high performance and its impact on the sport.I trust you will find this interesting and informative.

Neil DalrympleBowls Australia CEO

High Performance BackgroundBowls Australia’s inaugural high performance program began in 2004 following a World Championship campaign, which netted just two medals in both the men’s and women’s disciplines. Despite Australia boasting more members than any other bowling nation in the world, its performances on the international stage failed to reflect its membership superiority, with the Australian Sports Commission becoming increasingly alarmed by its lack of success. As a result, the ASC conducted a review of its national programs before recommending the implementation of a ‘high performance’ program, which has now been in effect for almost five years.Since the program was first introduced, its mission was to make “Australia the world’s leading bowling nation by 2008”. The results from our national teams during this time indicate that this objective has since been achieved. During a golden run, Australia has dominated the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the 2007 Asia Pacific Championships and the 2008 World

Championships, winning 20 medals from 22 events, a strike rate that was unrivaled by any other nation in the same time period. In 2004, Australia possessed just a volunteer coaching structure, but now boasts a full-time national coach, who is supported by a team including sport psychologists, a sports scientist, an assistant coach, mentors and a nutritionist. High performance pathways have also been established in many of our states and territories, with programs that are linked to state institutes of sport and regional academies of sport. These programs are now developing the next generation of high performance athletes and coaches into the national program. A number of Bowls Clubs are also being very active in recruiting and developing bowlers. The ASC recently has conducted its second review of the HP program and pathways, with its findings released at the end of July and posted on the Bowls Australia website.

What is high performance? The bowls high performance program aims to create an environment that encourages and enables athletes to achieve their highest level of performance. This is achieved by:

Developing comprehensive and •effective training programsUtilising sport science to enhance •training programsProviding appropriate development •opportunities for elite athletes and coachesEncouraging the early •identification of talented athletes and coaches.Building of relationships and •strategic partnerships with state and territory associations, clubs, state institutes/ academies of sport, Australian Sports Commission, Australian Commonwealth Games Association and the Australian Institute of Sport. The creation of competitive •competition structure that

allows athletes to strike a balance between appropriate levels of training and competition.

The major elements of the bowls high performance program involves competition, athlete and coach pathways.

High performance fast factsBowls Australia’s high performance •program obtains 95% of its funding via the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Commonwealth Games Association, with BA providing the remaining 5% from its own fundsSince 2005, athletes in the Bowls •Australia high performance program have received $444,000 in direct payments and have won more than $100,000 on the Bowls Australia grand prix circuit in 2008 alone.Since the introduction of the HP •program, Australia has won more medals at the sport’s three benchmark events than any other nation.Australia has also won the World •Champion of Champions three times, the World Cup four times and the Junior World Cup five times.

High performance in bowls will remain a key focus and strategic priority for Bowls Australia into the future and I encourage any aspiring athletes and/or coaches to contact Bowls Australia should they seek more information about the program. We look forward to working closely with all key stakeholders in bowls, but in particular our state and territory associations and the many clubs across Australia, who are currently developing our future Australian representatives.

The future looks bright for bowls in South Australia with the recent achievements of some of the State’s talented bowlers on the national and international stage.

In April, Kensington-Marryatville’s Penny Landherr had a taste of international competition when she was selected in an Australian Squad to take part in a five day training camp in Kuala Lumpur, which included two days spent playing the National Malaysian National Squad.

Penny’s strong performance during this camp was rewarded when she became the State’s first Australian representative since 2004 when she was selected to make her international debut at the US $30,000 Asia Pacific Merdeka Indoor Championships held in Malaysia in August.

Selected as one of Australia’s six-strong side in the multi-discipline tournament featuring Singles for men and women, as well as Mixed Pairs and Triples, Penny, who was presented with Bowls Australia cap No. 75, made a winning start to her international career as she defeated Korea’s Dong Sun Kim 14-2, 9-4 in the women’s Singles.

Penny’s goal is to make the team for the World Championships in 2012 to be held in Adelaide and the more exposure to the highest level of competition she gains will assist her in achieving that aim.

Newly crowned World Champion of Champion Brett Wilkie was Penny’s partner in the Mixed Pairs; and in a close call they won their first game, but stiff opposition in the ensuing games from Malaysia and

Hong Kong saw their pairs hopes disappear. In an all Australian Mixed Triples semi-final newly appointed Bowls SA Development Officer Kelli Wray, Anne Johns and Gerard Beath teamed to defeat Penny, Wilkie and Anthony Kiepe.

After the event Penny admitted that she was overwhelmed by the experience and that the taste of this level had increased her desire to work hard and improve her game to reach her goals.

“When I was on the podium accepting my Bronze medal the emotions were overwhelming.

When the national anthem played and the flag was being hoisted I felt so happy and privileged to be there,” Landherr said.

“To share that feeling with five other fantastic team mates was exceptional and I definitely want more of that.”

Following on from Penny’s achievement in Malaysia, Marion Bowling Club’s Ashley Klose claimed a euphoric victory in the final of the $40,000 Queensland Open Men’s Singles at Bribie Island.

Having defeated South Australian teammates Neville Rodda and Scott Taylor (Somerton) in the quarter and semi-finals respectively, Ashley’s confidence was high resulting in some exhilarating play against his fierce and focused final’s opponent Alex Murtagh.

With Murtagh racing ahead in the first set 10-4, Ashley started to draw bowl superbly in the second set. Ashley needed a treble on the final end of the tie-break to force an extra end and that’s exactly what he achieved from a seemingly impossible position. The extra end of the tie-break took the final to almost two hours, and was a stunning conclusion to the six-day event and a brilliant win for the 23-year-old.

As a result of his rising profile another opportunity was presented to Ashley when he was recruited by the Roselands Bowling Club in NSW (the home club of Bowls Australia Coach Cameron Curtis), to Skipper one of their Premier League rinks for the upcoming season which runs from 5 September until 22 November.

Regarded as one of the strongest competitions in the world the chance was too good to pass up and will result in Ashley missing Premier League games for home club Marion for some of the first six rounds. Being keen to continue to support his club Ashley plans to fly home to compete in two or three games during this time.

These achievements, coupled with the recent successes of Scott Taylor at both the Queensland Open and the Australian Open where he defeated the current World Number One, Safuan Said, and the appointment of Bill Cornehls to the position of High Performance

Manager augurs well for the future of bowls in South Australia.

In a see-sawing encounter, Ascot Park jumped out to a sizeable 30 shot lead early in the contest, before the Lakers mounted a comeback hitting the front with four ends to play. In a match deciding end, Beau Schutz’s four scored seven shots on the penultimate end of the game to secure a stirring victory in front of large appreciative crowd. Ascot Park came from fourth after the Minor Round and only earned a place in the Grand Final with a nail-biting win in the Preliminary Final, securing victory by three shots in the last end of the game.

Thursday Premier LeagueAs Minor Premiers, Marion’s Thursday Premier 1 side was keen to retain their place when they met Modbury in the Semi-final at Marion, and they weren’t disappointed winning the match convincingly 87 – 44. REGION 1 Mt Gambier changes to carpetAfter 105 years of grass greens; the transformation of the third green from grass to carpet is in the final processes to become an all weaved carpet three green, bowls club.Due for completion in September, ‘A’ green will be a match for the existing ‘B’ and ‘C’ greens surface wise, and will give the Club three similar greens along the Commercial Street boundary; merging with the permanent greenery of the Vansittart Park gardens. Club members and local contractors have done the base requirements and ditch alterations to comply with the Laws of the Sport and the specifications from the construction company, in preparation for the underfelt and woven carpet to be laid early September and ready for play for the 2009-10 season. With the completion of the carpeting, and non-grass surrounds of the third green, the club will have no further need to make noisy green preparations early in the mornings. Nor will it have the ongoing demand for spraying water and chemicals. Another benefit is removing the problem of having to play tournaments on surfaces that differed greatly from one green to another; a problem that has caused the club to reduce the number of entrants that normally took part in the open tournaments that the club holds annually. 90 Year Certificates Lin WhellerMembers of the Mount Gambier Bowling Club visited Lin Wheller in her new surrounds at Woodlands Village, at which Club President Terry Bruhn presented Lin with a Bowls SA 90 year Certificate.Lin first came to the club in the early 70’s after she and her husband Stan retired from farming life at Mount Schank. This was the start of Lin’s continued and varied contribution to the club which saw her very active in the kitchen, as well as on the green, where she also excelled. As well as having her name on the list of Club Champions,

Lin served two years as Junior Vice President, a further two years as Senior Vice President, culminating as President and Immediate Past President for another four years.Lin then found time to spend more years on the Games Room Committee, and further serving the Club and bowls as an Umpire. It is not surprising that this contribution over a period of 40 years saw her awarded Life Membership of the Club. When presented with her 90 year Certificate, Lin along with her late husband Stan, became a rarity with both husband and wife having received a Bowls SA 90 year Certificate. The visit from her fellow club members and the tea party was a great success and Lin took great delight in showing off her new home to her visitors.

Ivy ProsserMembers of the Tintinara Women’s Bowling Club travelled to Keith to present Life Member Ivy Prosser with her Bowls SA 90 year Certificate.Ivy unselfishly devoted a large slice of her life to the betterment of bowls at State, Divisional, Association and Club level and Tintinara members are very proud of all she achieved. At State level Ivy represented her area as Country Councillor for 15 years (1970 – 85); Executive Member for 11 years (1985 – 96); Country Vice President two years and Past Country Vice President one year. Ivy’s dedication to bowls did not stop there; her prowess on the green saw her win a host of titles, some many times over, and she also took on numerous roles within the club.

25 Years of Service for Green KeeperIn recognition of 25 years service as green keeper at the Mount Gambier RSL & District Bowling Club, Les James was presented with a gold watch at

the Club’s Annual General Meeting. Outgoing President, Ron Ploenges, spoke in glowing terms of Les’s loyalty and dedication to his job and the Club. In response Les gave a very appreciative and emotional speech and assured Club members that he will continue to play with the Club.

Maitland Champion accepts new role The Maitland Bowling Club is honoured that Lorna Arthur has accepted the position of Patroness for 2009/2010. Lorna joined the Cub in 1982 and showed great skills on the bowling

green from the beginning of her bowls career until the present by being Club Champion in 1994/95 and Runner-up for two years. Over the years, Lorna has continued to either win or be Runner-up of Club Champion Pairs, Drawn Pairs and Drawn Triples, and has also been a President’s Trophy and 100-up winner.Lorna has served the Club faithfully on committees and has taken her turn in convening the many functions the Club

holds, including working on a Rotary Team. During the 2003/04 season she was presented with her Super Veteran’s badge; and at the age of 86 years, to her credit, still enjoys competing in Club and Association events and the Country Carnival. The Club was proud to present three trophies to Lorna at the end of this season, as winner of the Championship Pairs with Lorraine Brokenshire; winner of the Club Drawn Pairs with Pattie Gardner; and Runner-up in the Championship Singles to Lorraine Brokenshire.

Minlaton Winter BowlsWhat’s new in Winter Bowls? Well at Minlaton on the Yorke Peninsula they decided at the end of the summer season to have a go at mid-week winter bowls. The theory was that the greens still had to be nurtured, cut and sprayed and this all cost money so they “bit the bullet” and tried the idea of Wednesday bowls. And what a success it has been!Club President Geoff Frost said they expected approximately 12-15 players might attend each week. Instead they’ve had anything up to 40 or 50 with players coming from a wide area; the majority, on average coming from Upper Yorke Peninsula.Depending on numbers the format of play was Triples, Pairs and Fours and scored on a 5-4-3-2-1- basis to make the game more interesting and give all a chance to win a game. Each end had a maximum of 15 points up for grabs regardless of whose bowls are in the head.A number of interstate visitors staying in the caravan parks heard about the games and also took part.

She suspended her service as Councillor for two years, 2003–05, when she was

elected as a Bowls SA Board Director; resuming the role on completion of her term.Guests, including Carol’s sister and brother-in-law Joan and Peter Doherty, attended the luncheon and acknowledgment of Carol’s achievements. Assistant Councillor Irene Cooper presented Carol with a basket of flowers and a surprise gift, courtesy of Region 3 members, of two tickets to the musical “Cats” and one night’s accommodation at the Stamford Plaza Hotel.

Nuri were two rinks down, one up and one a draw. After playing two extra ends, Nuriootpa prevailed with all four rinks up and five shots.Freeling then played Tanunda in the Preliminary final; another tight game which they won by a few shots. Both sides took battle again for the Grand Final and Nuriootpa were the victors 77 - 66.

as Club President; SAWBA Division 6 Country Councillor and Executive Member; and President of the Lower Murray Women’s Bowling Association Past President’s Association. Lorna has also had an extensive array of achievements on the green winning the Country Carnival Singles; and in the National Pairs, playing with Betty Nolan, won a Silver Medal. At Club level she has been Club Singles Champion ten times, and Champion of Champion twice. Age is no barrier and in the LMWBA and Region 6 Champion of Champions this year, partnered by 90 year old Florrie Lucas, and 80 year old Betty Anderson they were crowned winners of the Champion of Champion Triples.Lorna has been acknowledged with Life Membership of Region 6, LMWBA, and the Murray Bridge RSL Bowling Club. It would appear Lorna is not ready to slow down just yet; she is still playing Division One bowls.

Florrie 90 Years YoungFlorrie Lucas celebrated her 90th birthday on 30 June 2009 and 46 years of bowling at the Murray Bridge RSL Women’s Bowling Club.Florrie joined the club in 1963 and

has always been an active member serving on numerous committees and holding the office of President during the 87-88 and 88-89 seasons.Since joining, Florrie cites that the most notable change in bowls has been the dress code. In 1963 dresses were white and hems had to be about 12” from the ground! Stockings were compulsory and had to be worn regardless of the heat.Always competitive, Florrie has been successful in winning the Club Championship four times, Triples three times, Pairs once, and President’s Handicap Singles three times. Only this year she was a member of the winning team in the Lower Murray Women’s Bowling Association Championship Triples and Runner-up in the President’s Handicap Singles.

REGION 7Success for Christies BeachWhat a great pennant season for Christies Beach with Thursday’s Division One and Division Two winning the Minor Premiers and Pennant and Saturday’s Division Two Red winning the Pennant. Both Thursday finals were played against Happy Valley at McLaren Vale and the atmosphere was wonderful with many supporters cheering the teams on. It is the first time that the Division One side has won the flag in 15 years so it has been a long time between drinks!

SO WHAT’S A HUMAN RIGHT WORTH ANYWAY?Recently the media has been full of comment and opinion about the issue of whether Australia should have a Charter of Human Rights or a Human Rights Act in place for all Australians. The Rudd Government has brought the issue to the public agenda. A Charter of Rights does not necessarily do much for the most powerful in the community; and will mostly assist those who are not part of the powerful sectors. The Charter of Rights would cover:

The right to life, liberty and security •of person.Freedom from arbitrary interference •with privacy, family and correspondence.Freedoms of opinion and •expression.Right to vote in periodic and •genuine elections.Right to a standard of living •adequate for health and well being.Right to association. •

Protections relating to the justice •system such as a right to a fair trial and to be informed of the reasons for arrest or detention and the ability to test these reasons.

In the UK and Europe the Human Rights Charter has assisted those in the following circumstances:

Children with Autism have gained an •entitlement to disability assistance after a Human Rights argument was raised in Victoria. A pregnant single mother avoided •eviction into homelessness after a human rights issue was raised to negotiate an alternative agreement.Primary School redevelopment •considered human rights to inform the design and planning of the school in Victoria.

A rehabilitation centre agreed not •to move young people with injury to aged care facilities until human rights obligations were considered.Staff at a mental hospital changed •their practice of leaving a man to soil himself after his advocate raised a Human Rights Act issue. An older couple were reunited •after using Human Rights Act in the United Kingdom to reverse the decision to separate them after 65 years of marriage because the wife did not meet the criteria of the care facility required by her husband.

One of the arguments against a charter is that it would be a lawyers’ fest and it would see a shift of power from the electorate to an unelected judiciary. However, a Charter of Rights championed by the new Matilda organisation, the Human Rights Resource Group and a number of other local Australian organisations, support a Charter of Rights which is really a declaration of what rights you have and the ability to argue that a law may be incompatible with those rights. A Judge if convinced would then bring that to the attention of the parliament of the jurisdiction in which the argument developed and it would be up to the parliament to then either fix or ignore this contradiction. This would mean that the electorate would still hold all power because if the government did nothing about it and the electorate was sufficiently moved in relation to it, it could on that issue take it to the ballot box and vote accordingly.Another argument against it has been the fact that the High Court, the ultimate decision maker of questions of law in Australia is not set up to deal with making such theoretical declarations. Recently a group of eminent lawyers and jurists have argued that the High Court has the ability to declare the compatibility as it is a real issue to be determined. Some governments have suggested an increase in litigation. That may occur, but if so that means we are probably providing more than lip service to respect for human rights and in due course setting new standards for the community.Throughout Australia at the moment Professor/Father Frank Brennan, is heading an Enquiry into the community’s

attitude towards the implementation of a Charter of Rights in Australia. It sat in Adelaide recently and is now considering its findings and will report to government in September. In 1948 the UN Declaration of Rights was established and many of the rights contained in that document would be part of the document which this Charter of Rights in Australia would canvass. There is nothing new or frightening about it. The wheels have not fallen off the United Kingdom’s legal system or Europe’s, nor Canada’s but what has happened is that the less powerful in society have a tool they can use to make themselves heard. A Charter of Rights would be doing the same. It is an idea which is very consistent with the Australian ideal of a fair go for all no matter what your background or what religion or which football team you support. Human rights should not be taken for granted. The last 20 years have seen an erosion of a number of civil liberties. The right to know the evidence against you, the right to not answer questions when someone accuses you of something, are examples of such rights eroded and diminished. Having a Charter of Rights or a Human Rights Act in place will preserve these freedoms that we have come to know. Governments of all persuasions can be held accountable. A Charter of Rights Act would assist in that happening far more than it does currently. There is no claim for damages which comes from any of these breaches of the rights, just that the rights cannot be overridden without parliament saying so. So is it time for Australia to have a Charter? It depends on what you consider a human right to be worth.

More than 50% of Aussie retirees now connected to the internet

Australian retirees are connecting to the internet in their droves with a recent survey indicating more than half now have home access

to “the web”.The retirement study conducted by

AXA also revealed retirees are spending an average of one hour every day – or seven hours each week – online, backing up the notion that older Australians have an increasing preference to Google rather than garden.

However, for the over-55s among us who choose a retirement village lifestyle, hooking up to the internet is often easier said than done as in-home broadband access within villages is virtually non-existent. That is until now!

In a fi rst for large-scale villages in South Australia, Lifestyle SA has just completed rolling out underground cabling at its 10 locations across Adelaide enabling interested residents to connect to high-speed broadband internet from the comfort of their living rooms.

Hundreds of village residents have already embraced the internet as a tool to conduct their daily lives and to keep

in touch with friends and family. In fact, emailing the kids and grandkids, searching for information and banking online are among the main reasons why retirees choose to log on in the fi rst place.

I’ll be honest: it took me a long time to open my mind to the internet after years of scepticism fuelled by my general lack of understanding about computers. And while I concede that I’ll never be a computer whiz, even an old dog like me has managed to learn some new tricks which proves there’s hope for everyone!

So if you haven’t already, check out the internet and judge for yourself how it can improve your life.

and John carried on their good work winning both games with Martin’s team the overall winner by a clear margin of 34 shots. Trevor’s team won their last game and should be congratulated on a fine performance of 11 wins out of 12 over two Carnivals. For the first time ladies became part of the Carnival and what a delight it was to see the Lockleys Bowling Club full with the combination of men and ladies. Two hundred sat down for lunch and the participation by the ladies was ‘the icing on the cake’ for the Carnival. Eighteen ladies teams competed and at the end of the day Phyllis Forbes’ team for Eyre Peninsula narrowly won by seven shots from the team of Annette Rowntree (Yorke Peninsula) and Margaret Maylin (Lower North) all three teams winning both games.A record 30 teams competed in the Mixed Fours at Clarence Gardens and after a shortened last game; seven teams had won their two games. Mary Mervell’s Metro Team was the overall winner by nine shots from Rex Wilsons’ Metro team (surprise performance) followed by the consistent Trevor Frahn with his team from Lower Murray. The Past Presidents sincerely thank the three host clubs, Clarence Gardens, Lockleys and Hope Valley for providing great greens, great lunches, great bar service and above all tremendous co-operation. All participants felt so welcome.

8th STATE FRIENDSHIP CARNIVALWhat a great week of fellowship and bowls during the 8th State Friendship Carnival. After concern about the weather, the Carnival was three and a half

days of great conditions only marred by showers during the last game on Friday. However, the Carnival was voted a resounding success even before the showers came. Twenty-eight teams competed in the Men’s competition which commenced at Clarence Gardens in ideal conditions. At the end of the day, six teams were unbeaten and the stage was set for a tight competition. The second day at Lockleys, and another great day, when the teams of Neil Bayliss (Metro), Des Rehn and Barry Trowbridge (both Eyre Peninsula) lost a game leaving the teams of John Hill (Lower North), Martin Dew and Trevor Frahn (both Lower Murray) unbeaten; ten games in a row for Trevor, whose team won the last Carnival in 2007.Out to Hope Valley for the last day and Trevor was unfortunate to play the highly skilled but unlucky David Plunkett’s team in the first game. However, Martin

The Carnival concluded with a Presentation Dinner at Clarence Gardens where a record attendance of 146 enjoyed a fine meal. It’s been done by cricket, rugby league, hockey, netball and AFL – now it’s bowls’ turn. Let’s show Australia what lawn bowls can do by holding a Pink Bowls Day at your club on Sunday, October 25 to raise money for the McGrath Foundation charity for breast cancer nurses and research. No doubt you will know someone who has been affected by or sadly passed away from breast cancer. By getting your club behind this day not only will you have fun but you will be raising money to help in the fight against breast cancer. Start planning your day now – a game of bowls dressed in pink, with a BBQ, a pink cake stall, a raffle or auction, to name just a few ideas. Invite local businesses to take part and promote the game of lawn bowls as a great, fun sport. More information, including registration forms, will be sent to your club in the next few weeks. All clubs that register to participate in the Pink Bowls Day will be in with a chance to win great prizes, including a set of bowls and pink bowls clothing. Almost nine months ago, following the untimely passing of dual Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Kerryn McCann, Australian icon Karen Murphy vowed to pay tribute to her memory. Having forged a friendship over the best part of a decade as two of Illawarra’s most decorated athletes, McCann, who resided in Coledale, and Murphy, a Shell harbour favourite, began their friendship after the former claimed Gold in the women’s marathon and the latter collected Silver in the women’s singles at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Over subsequent years they remained in contact, with the pair reuniting in Melbourne as McCann defended her marathon title in front of an adoring MCG crowd, while Murphy snared Gold in the women’s pairs. In early December, however, the 41-year-old, who was diagnosed with breast cancer during her third pregnancy, lost her battle after the disease had spread

to her liver, leaving her body so ill during her final days that she could no longer talk. She died at the family’s home at Coledale, 20km north of Wollongong, leaving behind children Benton, 11, Josie, 5, Cooper, 15 months and husband, Greg. Following McCann’s death, Murphy sowed the seeds for a tribute befitting of her memory, with a National Pink Bowls Day the final result.

AnswersThe team mates have two options. They may use a substitute in all their remaining matches or they may find an available 1. eligible member then approach the controlling body to declare the ailing player’s position in the team vacant and authorise the eligible member to fill the vacated position as a replacement player in the team. Law 51.2 DR 4.1.3 4.1.4.

NO. A substitute should only be introduced if, in the opinion of both skips or, if they cannot agree, in the opinion of the 2. umpire or the controlling body, that a substitution is necessary. Law 51.3. The controlling body will decide the substitute’s eligibility. Law 51.5. A substitute can play in any position except that of skip, and the other players can arrange their positions as desired. DR 4.1.14.

In a side one substitute may be allowed in each team. DR 4.1.11. 3.

4. NO. The player next to play is wrong on a number of issues:Law 55.2 dot 9 instructs the marker to mark a toucher as soon as it comes to rest. (i) Law 35. 2 tells us that possession of the mat does not transfer until the toucher has been marked. (ii) Law 36.1.1 tells us that players at the mat end of the rink who are not delivering a bowl should stand at least 1 metre (iii) behind the mat.

5. The marker should put the jack back to a position agreed by the opponents. If the opponents cannot agree, the marker should put the jack back to its former position. Law 33.4.2.
