Islamic civilization has been home to geniuses who are pioneers of modern scienceSumeyye Ceylan, who is the curator of the exhibition of Pioneers of

Modern Science/ Islamic History of Science and Technology told what the exhibition is saying about the past, the present and the tomorrow

“Sumeyye Ceylan, the organizer and curator of the exhibition of “the Pioneers of Modern Scien-

ce / Islamic History of Science and Technology” describes Usturlab, that organizes the exhibition, that she is the founder of the exhibition, as the place where “Science begins with philosophy and meets art”. Us-turlab is a social initiative attracting the attention of individuals of all age groups starting from preschool, addressing many senses, designing and implementing a wide range of interactive, science, art and techno-logy workshops, bringing together educational professionals. The exhi-bition opened on 4 November 2019 at Istanbul Airport International will be open to the audience in the same place for a year. We talked to curator Sumeyye Ceylan about the content of the exhibition, the impor-tance of it and what it said to many of the local and foreign viewers.

- Which course did you build

the exhibition on?- First of all, when we design the

exhibition, we constructed a story through the journey of humanity in search of knowledge. Our story starts in the Congo region in 20,000 BC. It starts doing mathematics with mankind’s notching to a baboon bo-ne. Later, the historical adventure of science goes beyond the civilizations on earth. Sometimes, Babylonians produce time measurement tools with 60 number system even now we use. Occasionally, Indo-Arab figures used for thousands of years in the hands of Indians that we are currently using are emerging. Some-times the method which we call the science of philosophy in Ancient Greece emerges. And as this journey continues, the information proceeds as an adventure from civilization to civilization. The time comes when philosophy schools are closed, lib-raries are burned and ancient know-ledge is forgotten in human history

tarihinde.

yapan kişiler Müslü-man bilim insanlarıdır.

- Uluğ Bey’in Zîc’ini okuyup hayran olmamak elde değil.

in A.D. 6th century. Beytu’l Hikme was established in Baghdad in the 8th century.

- What kind of journey awaits us in the exhibition?

- The first part is the discovery section. In the observation secti-on, we see the innovations made by scientists, especially in the fi-eld of astronomy, in our geograp-hy. Important personalities stand out. For example, we meet names such Al-Sufi, Ulugh Beig, Ali Kushchu. We have the chance to experience these people and their important works in the exhibition. We then experience the historical adventure of an instrument that is important in terms of the history of science, such as astrolabe. We divided the human section into sub-sections, including pursuit of light, pursuit of movement, pursu-it of healing, pursuit of certainty, pursuit of matter. We experience what these people pursue in their scientific adventures in each sec-tion. For example, in the Pursuit of Light section, Ibn al-Heysem, who was described as the first scientist in history, who was the first user of the scientific method that we are currently using, wel-comes us.

- There is also the design part... What was done and produced there?

- We worked with engineers, software developers, animation experts and other valuable peop-le. We worked on everything from script to character modelling. We researched how the clothes of those centuries were, how the par-chments were put to the bookshel-ves. We designed it in a comple-tely scientific way after checking and approving all of them based on related essays. All the produc-tion was done in Turkey. I mean, it is completely domestic. We did it together with the engineers and designers of our country.

The engineer rebuilding the six-cylinder water pump of Taki-yuddin er Rashid’s expressed with admiration how difficult it was to

do so under the circumstances of that period. We have made one and a half meters astrolabe with respect to latitude and longitude of Istanbul. We designed a lunar mo-del where one can experience the digital mapping of the craters that are named after Muslim Scientists.Visitors are able to see the dancing figure of Venus in wooden way that was used inside the dome in order for Omer Khayyam’s visuali-zation the mathematical equation of the dome of Isfahan Mosque.

- Today, we see that many sci-entists who illuminate our paths are influenced by the discoveries and knowledge produced in Isla-mic civilization. In which areas have the most obvious examples of this impact been?

- We see that it has a great impact on our present day. They worked in a wide range of fields from mathematics to astronomy, from physics to chemistry. Mus-lim scientists have made chemis-try known as science. They have done very important work in as-tronomy. They developed a new language in art. It would be unfa-ir to speak of a single field. They have pioneered important studies in all areas of science. Unfortu-nately, today, young people have the perception that science emer-ged suddenly in Europe in the 16th century. Education is given as if Europeans invented the sci-entific method. We experienced that people in many countries around the world are uncomfor-table with this, by the help of this exhibition.

- Who are the most influential names among Muslim scientists that have taken place in history of Science?

- It was Ulugh Beig. I cannot help but admire reading the book named Zic. I can say the same for Biruni and al Kindi. You are able to understand from his autobiography how Ibni Sina had a clear mind at a very young age. The correspon-dence between Ibn Sina and Biruni impressed me a lot.

Fuat Sezgin attended elemen-tary school in Dogubeyazıt in 1936. Upon the death of his

father Mirza Mehmet Efendi, he went to Bitlis and graduated from secon-dary school in 1939 with scholarship and boarding. In 1942, he went to Er-zurum and graduated from Erzurum High School Science Department again with scholarship and boarding.

Fuat Sezgin came to Istanbul in 1943 with the intention of studying mathematics and becoming an en-gineer. He attended a seminar given by the German Orientalist Hellmut Ritter (1892-1971), one of the most renowned experts in the field, at the Institute of Oriental Studies of Istanbul University upon the advi-ce of one of his relative. He was so impressed with this seminar that he decided to give up his love of being an engineer and becam a student of Hellmut Ritter. Neither the discipline of Hellmut Ritter nor the hardship

of his field could discourage Sezgin from making this final decision. He went to the Oriental Studies Insti-tute to register without wasting any time and started to receive undergra-duate education at Istanbul Univer-sity Faculty of Letters, Department of Arabic and Persian Philology

HE ALWAYS WORKED VERY HARDAlthough Turkey did not partici-

pate in the Second World War, it was under the influence of this war. When the university education was suspended throughout Turkey in 1943, as a result of the conditions of the period. Ritter advised his students to make benefit of this long break and learn Arabic. At that time, Fuat Sezgin decided to compare the Quran’s exegesis of the Islamic sc-holar Cerîr et-Tabarî with the books containing its Turkish translation. During this time he constantly studi-ed Arabic in order to understand its

Fuat Sezgin, 1943 yılında ma-tematik okuyup mühendis olma düşüncesiyle İstanbul’a geldi.

exegesis written in a difficult langu-age. At the end of six months he was able to read the Arabic of the Tabari exegesis.

Fuat Sezgin graduated from Is-tanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Arabic and Persian Philology in 1947. He also completed his underg-raduate thesis titled “Bedî’ İlminin Tekâmülü ve İstanbul’da Bulunan Bedîiyyat Yazmalar Kataloğu”. He completed his doctoral thesis in 1950. Fuat Sezgin had been serving as a clerk at the Library of Istanbul University on these dates.

Sezgin, upon his name presence on the list prepared by the govern-ment that came to power by military coup in Turkey in 1960, that 147

academicians were expelled from univer-sities, was forced con-tinue working outside Turkey. Fuat Sezgin had to say goodbye to his beloved home-land. He was sad to leave his homeland, but he was determi-ned in this step for the sake of science.

Dr. Fuat Sezgin married his wife Dr. Ursula in 1966 mentioned that it is

perhaps one of the most important events of his life, a fortunate coin-cidence in his life. Their daughter Hilal Sezgin was born in 1970.

Fuat Sezgin was awarded the King Faisal Islamic Sciences Award in 1978, when this award was pre-sented to him, he made use of it and, he founded the Institut für Geschi-chte der Arabisch-Islamischen Wis-senschaften (Institute for the History of Arab-Islamic Sciences) of the University of Johann Wolfgang Go-ethe in 1982 1900, German physicist Eilhard Wiedemann began modeling

in accordance with the original ones in order to introduce the instruments found in the works of the history of Islamic science. In about 30 years of his life he managed to model only five instruments until 1928. Professor Dr. Fuat Sezgin started his studies with the idea of “I wonder if I succeded to make 30 tools?”; “Can I fill a room even if not a museum. He achieved much beyond imagination by modelling more than 700 ins-truments at the Museum of Islamic Science History in Frankfurt. In the same building, there was the Library of History of Sciences, which conta-ins 45,000 volumes of books that he brought together with great care and effort from all over the world throug-hout his life.

Professor Dr. Fuat Sezgin decided to establish a similar example of the Museum of Islamic History of Scien-ce, which he founded in Germany, in his homeland, in Istanbul. His aim was to enable the Turks to see in a more concrete way the extraordinary achievements of their civilization and the contribution of Muslim scientists to the history of science. He began preparations for the museum, when returned to Turkey. Inauguration of the Museum of History of Islamic Science and Technology, which he had dreamed of for many years, took place on May 25, 2008 as a result of these efforts and endeavours made by Fuat Sezgin in his own country and for his nation. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo-ğan. The museum which is located in Gülhane Park in Istanbul contains approximately 600 works.

In 2010, Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Islamic Foundation of History of Science Research was founded in order to support the activities of the museum. In addition, Department of History of Science, which provi-des education in undergraduate, graduate and doctorate fields under the body of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, was opened in 2013 under the leadership of Fuat Sezgin. The last great service that Fuat Sezgin has made for Turkey in the field of history of science was to establish Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin and Dr. Ursula Sezgin Library of History of Sciences.

Professor Dr. Mehmet Fuat Sez-gin passed away on June 30, 2018 in Istanbul, where he spent his last years and continued his studies. He dedicated his life that pushes the limits of rare perseverance and human power and has left behind many valuable works and thoughts.

T he astrolabe which was first described and used during the Greek period is

a technically astronomy tool that can be described as a mechani-cal computer for theoretical and practical purposes such as sol-ving global astronomy problems in technical sense, measuring the altitude of celestial bodies or a region, calculating day and night hours.

The name has its origins from the Greek words astrolabos or astrolabon, coined by the combi-nation of the words astron (star) and lambanein(to take, to catch, to measure). In the technical sense, an astrolabe is an astronomical instru-ment utilized for many theoretical and practical purposes such as sol-

ving global astronomy problems, measuring celestial bodies or

any altitude, determining daytime and nighttime,

and determining the direction of qibla

according to a city’s latitude and longitude. Many types of astrolabes exist, and these can be designed as spherical or planispheric. However, what is meant by the word astrolabe is usually the planar astrolabe, whi-ch is manufactured on the basis of projecting the sky on a circular pla-ne. According to Ibn al-Nadim, the first person to produce and use an astrolabe in the Islamic world was Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Fazari. Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi’s treatise of 402 chapters, Kitabu’l-Amel bi’l-Usturlab, is regarded as the most comprehensive work on the use of astrolabes.

Professor Dr. Fuat Sezgin says in his book Astronomy, Geography and Maritime in Islamic Civilization that astrolabe was known by Greek scholars who lived The astrolabe, which became known to the Muslim world, was developed by Muslim scholars and its usage area was ex-panded.

Astrolabe served as an analog astronomical computing machine in the absence of modern tech-nology. Height of celestial bodies such as the Sun, Moon, stars or an object that it is not possible to measure the altitude directly on the earth, can be measured, the time of sunrise and sun set can be determined, what was the time during the day or night can be cal-culated by using astrolabes.

In astrolabe, this three-di-mensional sphere is shown on a two-dimensional plane. Astrolabe consists of fixed and moving parts. The body is the part on which other parts are placed. There are ratings that show time around.

There is a plate, at the top part of the Astrolabe, on which the po-sitions of bright stars visible with the naked eye are shown, called as “spider”. It also shows the way the Sun follows the year in the sky when viewed from Earth on the spider.

One of the most striking objects of the exhibition is the model prepared by remaining faithful to the original samples of the archaic tool

astrolabe, which is used for measurements in the field of astronomy. We investigated the historical development of astrolabe and its areas of use

Astrolobe’s journey in the sky

Beytu’l Hikme is a science center consisting of library and translation center es-

tablished in Baghdad by Abbasids in the late 700s and early 800s. Meaning of the Word Beytu’l Hik-me is the House of Wisdom. Some researchers also called this concept Wisdom Gate, House of Wisdom.

Beytu’l Hikme, the first higher education institution known in the history of Islamic culture, was built adjacent to the palace as a library during the reign of Harun Resit. When the first nucleus of Beytu’l Hikme was a library created in the palace during the reign of the Caliph Mansur and the books that were brought from abroad and translated in time did not fit in here, Harun Reşid had built a library named Hizanetu’l Hikme adja-cent to the palace.

During this period, Indian works, which have been brought by Indian traveler scholar and doctors were also put in the Beytu’l Hikme. In the light of such information, it can be said that Beytul Hikme was founded as an example of the Alexandria and Jundishapur aca-

demies, which emerged as a result of natural needs and a process. That’s because until the establish-ment of Beytul Hikme, many works belonging to ancient cultures and civilizations were brought to Bagh-dad and translated. All in all, this institution that was established as a library during the reign of Harun Resit accelerated translation activi-ties further. As it can be understood from the word of Wisdom (Hikmet in Turkish) , the institution has been a center for the translation of researches in physics, chemistry, as-tronomy, philosophy and works on this subject. Courses and studies on religious sciences have been done in other institutions, especially in mosques. Those who were emplo-yed at Beytu’l Hikme had received a very full salary. These known attitudes of Abbasid administrators have attracted scientists from other regions to Baghdad. Beytu’l Hikme, also serving as a library, is the first library in the Islamic world and has a respectable place. Beytul Hikme made great contributions to the sci-ence of astronomy at that time.

THE GUARD OF THE ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE

In the first part of the exhibition, Kesif/Discovery, while the information about Beytu’l Hikme (House of Wisdom) established in Islamic geography at the end of the 700s is provided, the manuscripts coming from there

can also be accessed through the digital environment

El-Harezmi, 780 yılında Özbe-kistan’ın Hive bölgesinde doğmuştur. Bilimde Müslü-

manların Altın Çağı olarak bilinen dönemde yaşadı. Bu büyük İslam bilgini gençlik döneminde Bağdat’a gitmiş burada eğitim almıştır.

Al-Khwarizmi was born in 780 in the Hive region of Uzbe-kistan. He lived in the period

known as the Golden Age of Mus-lims. This great Islamic scholar went to Baghdad during his youth and studied there. It was supported by the Abbasid State and took place in Beyt’ul-Hikme, where the best scho-lars of the period were admitted. He-re, he carried out studies on calcu-lating the volume and environment of the world. In Baghdad, he also be-came an administrator in the Palace library. Khwarizmi, who worked at the translation academy establis-hed for the translation of foreign works, had the opportunity to work on world famous works with this opportunity and completed his great works here. He produced important works of different sciences. His most important works were on mathe-matics, astronomy and geography. Khwarizmi ‘s most famous work in mathematics was the explanation of the number “0” and development of the decimal number system and the concepts of logarithm.

Al-Khwarizmi, who explained in mathematics and used zero for the first time, is therefore considered as the founder of trigonometry. He introduced the Indian number sys-tem, now known as Arabic numbers, and developed many arithmetic

methods such as fractions and ope-rations. His greatest contribution to mathematics is his work Al-Kitab Al-Mukhtasar Fi Hisab Al-Jabr Wa’l-Muqabala (Summary Book on Al-gebra and Equality). This work is the first book in the history of science in which algebra is the subject matter alone. In this respect, Al-Khwarizmi is known as the father of algebra. In the book, he explains the solu-tion of second degree equations with geometry and mathematical methods. It proved geometrically by clearly showing when the equ-ations would have double root and when they would have real root. This book was used as the fundamental book of algebra in many universities of the world for 600 years. In the field of geography and astronomy, he corrected the mistakes on the world map drawn by Ptolemy and wrote books on clocks and sundials. He managed to draw a world map by working with 70 scientists. In the field of astronomy, he studied the motion of stars and planets, eclipses of the sun and the moon, and produced astronomical tables and charts. He also worked on geography to cal-culate the diameter of the world. He also studied the mountains and rivers and found the origin and longitude of the Nile.

The father of algebra Al-Khwarizmi

Revolution that was made in mathematics by Al-Khwarizmi who is recognized as the father of algebra in world science history impressed many scientists. One of the topics of the exhibition is Al-Khwarizmi...

Ay, dünyanın tek doğal uydu-su ve uzaklığı yaklaşık 380.000 kilometre. Ay

The moon is the world’s only natural satellite and is about 380,000 kilometers away.

Unlike the world, the moon surface contains hundreds of craters, very dif-ferent from the world. The reason for this is that the Moon does not have an atmosphere and it has a structure that is susceptible to impact from meteors coming from space. Craters and moun-tains had not yet been named when the lunar surface was examined and drawn in detail by Galileo in 1610. As a result of the widespread observation of the telescope and the close exami-nation of the Moon, various maps have been drawn and more details have been revealed. The names of craters and mountains gained official status with the decision taken by IAU (Inter-national Astronomical Union), after the nomenclature. Many of the Moon’s

craters continue to keep the names of famous scientists, philosophers, mat-hematicians and explorers alive. These names include scientists who have played a major role in laying the foun-dation for modern sciences and who have grown up in the basin of Islamic civilization.

MOST INTERESTING AREANames of many Muslim scientists

in the international scientific com-munity have been given to craters discovered on the moon. Ali Kuscu, Ulug Bey, Biruni, Omar Khayyam, Ibn Sina are some of these names. You tap a scientist whose crater is named after and the crater’s location is illuminated, showing a fast turn on the surface of the moon animated in the exhibition.

M r. President, bestowed a great honor on the scienti-fic world and our founda-

tion by announcing the year of 2019 as Prof. Dr. By of Fuat Sezgin year. On the occasion of this year, we have found opportunity to tell works of our master of which value cannot be measured and his thoughts to the nation as foundation. All of the works that shed light on the history of Islamic Science from the past to this time were presented to the literature with reprints. At the same time, over 600 protocols have been made with ministries, associations and non-governmental organizati-ons, the majority of which are com-posed of our universities, and over 800 activities, symposia and semi-nars have been organized within the framework of these protocols.

By the end of 2019, our work will not be finished, and it will con-tinue in 2020 as well as in following years. Our main goal is to close the lost years with the scientific studies that will be carried out from now on and get to the old and deserved situation in science. In this regard, our state is in great effort and work under governance of our President.

At the same time, our master presented our country a magnificent museum consisting of about 600 pieces in Gülhane. This museum is the best proof of what our master is trying to do. Every year the number of visitors is increasing and in 2019 about 150,000 people visited.

We have always been near him with Mr. Bilal Erdogan, a member of the board of Trustees of our foundation, in the last years of our master, and we have the great peace of trying to support and assist him in every issue.

We are very lucky that Almighty Allah has given us to work with Mr. Bilal, to be with science and to be with a perfect human being with his humanity.

I remember him with mercy and love and I really miss him.

With deep love and respect...

“The Leaders of Modern Scien-ce; Exhibition of History of Is-lam Science and Technology”

which aims at showing the con-tributions of Muslim scientist to the world science history and making us experienced it per-sonally, throughout the concept focuses on the period between 7th and 16th centuries defined

as the golden era of the Islam Civilization and will be held under the auspi-ces of our Presidency is also one of the impor-tant projects that we evaluate in this context

and it is so precious

for us. Of course, it is not a coinci-dence that The Leaders of Modern Science; Exhibition of History of Is-lam Science and Technology” which is also addressed in terms of display location and collaborationists will be held in İstanbul Airport which is latest technologic product global gateway center of İstanbul which connects the continents and cultures for centuries with its unique geograp-hical location and with sponsorship of our brand with the highest number of foreign guests. As Turkish Airlines, sports, science and art are the most important subjects in our sponsors-hip portfolio which has a wide scope regarding the global access.

- What does Exhibition of The Leaders of Modern Science mean for IGA?
