Aquarter of the year has flown pastand much has happened since wejollied up for the New Year.

Highlights of the celebrations and activities we started the year with were agrand state-level cultural carnival to celebrate Sabah’s cultural richness anddiversity in January; February was packedwith festivities centring on Kota Kinabalu’scommemoration of its 8th year as a cityand Chinese New Year celebrations; InMarch, athletes from all over the worldtook part in the 9th Sabah AdventureChallenge to conquer 200km of testingnorth Bornean terrain.

The buzz continues this April withhighlights like the much anticipated andspectacular Regatta Lepa Semporna –Water Festival on the East Coast of Sabah. After you’ve drunken in the sights andsounds of East Coast culture, it would be ashame to miss the opportunity to visit theparadise islands of Mataking, Sipadan,Mabul and Kapalai that lie off the coast ofSemporna. Not only are these islandsstunning, the surrounding oceans are anunderwater marvel for divers andsnorkellers; but if you aren’t able to doeither then there are alluring spas for anindulging stay. If you’re in the area for thefestival but want an alternative to the sea, then there is also a highlight of an inlandgetaway called the Balung River EcoResort located in the district of Tawau onpage 9.

On our cover is a shot from AnzacDay, held yearly in Sandakan. TheMemorial commemorates the 2500Australian and New Zealand soldiers whowere marched to their death in 1945.

Only six survived, all escaping their cap-tors along the march route (now known asthe Sandakan Death March). This episodeof the war is considered to be the worstatrocity ever suffered by Australian soldiers. This moving commemorative ceremony is held at the SandakanMemorial Park, as it has been every yearsince 1999.

Several other events are lined up thismonth, ranging from the artisticHandicraft Exhibition at the MonsopiadCultural Village to the inspiring SpecialOlympics Mt. Kinabalu Challenge. Have alook at the Calendar of Events, take part inthe goings-on and most of all, have fun!

To all our visitors, I wish you a fantasticstay!

Semporna comes to life with one of the most extravagantly colourful events inMalaysia this time of the year. The Sea Bajau flaunt gaily decorated traditionalwooden boats, called lepa in their dialect, along the coastline of Semporna to

contend for the prize of the most beautiful lepa. The lepa isn’t just any boat. It is a traditional, single mast sailing boat that played

a central role in the lives of the early nomadic Sea Bajau who lived their entire livesaboard boats, rarely setting foot on land. The lepa is usually made of ubar suluk (redseraya) wood, etched with intricate carvings. Brightly-coloured sails, known as sambulayang and tapis (small triangular flags), further adorn the boat.

During this annual event, each kampung (village) around Semporna not onlyshow off their beautifully decorated boats, but have the traditional igal-igal dancersperform dance aboard them, complete with musicians and family members cheeringthem on. Check out the variety of local sports and games during the event, like theLumba dayung where experienced boatmen paddle their hearts out to the finish lineand the tug of war where teams pull the rope from their floating boats.

Make the most out of your trip while you’re in Semporna. Semporna is known tobe the departure point to world renowned dive sites like Sipadan, Mataking, Mabuland Kapalai. If you can’t dive, there’s no doubt these gorgeous islands make equally amazing snorkeling venues. This little town also boasts to have the freshestand least expensive seafood in the whole of Malaysia so don’t hesitate to chow downon the supreme seafood here. Stop at the interesting floating Semporna OceanTourism Centre, located at the famous Dragon Inn.

As we rode in the minivan that was tak-ing us to Tenom, a small town about 3hours away from Kota Kinabalu, Ithought about what the next two dayswould be like. To be honest, I hadn’t theslightest clue what a coffee adventure

would entail, and expected nothing more than sittingaround and sipping different flavours of coffee all day, which was fine by me.

We pulled into the small town of Tenom and founda parking spot in front of a huge statue of a brownman, dressed in the tribal warrior garment of a vestmade out of tree bark and a loincloth hanging down tohis knees. In his right hand he yielded a long blowpipeand in his left, a wooden shield. It was nice to beginour stop with a meeting with Ontoros Antanom, a manI had read about in our history books. He was therevered Murut warrior who was killed in an uprisingagainst the British in the Rundum District in 1915.

After meeting our host for the weekend, Mr. Tham, and a plate of satisfying roasted chicken rice, we piledback into our minivan. “Follow my car,” was theinstruction Mr. Tham gave our driver. “We are going tothe coffee bar to have some coffee.” So, follow him wedid. About a whole minute later, Mr Tham’s red LandCruiser turned right, into the front yard of a 2-storeywooden building that looked like any other kampunghouse. We each hopped out of our van and weregreeted by the cheerful Mr Foong Choon Sang, theundisputed “Coffee King” of Tenom and founder ofTenom Fatt Choi Coffee. Also there was his son, theCEO of his company, the young Foong Kim Pang.

Thus began our Tenom Coffee Adventure.

Tenom coffee is not something dismissible. Themention of ‘Kopi Tenom’ will have many Malaysian cof-fee lovers oohing and ahhing. It is well known for itsdeliciously rich aroma and simply wonderful flavour allover Malaysia and the neighbouring Brunei, evenwhen it’s not readily available in supermarkets yet!

Mr. Foong ushered us into the building and weentered into a cosy space with a small coffee bar onour left and shelves filled with bags of different blendsof coffee on our right. On the walls in front of us hungmore than a few photos of the proud Mr. Foong andhis famous visitors. We looked a little closer and sawthe current Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang AmatBerhormat Datuk Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawishaking hands with Mr Foong. “When he visits Sabah,he will insist on Tenom Coffee or no coffee at all,”Foong proudly announced.

Mr. Foong has been in the coffee business for over20 years. Fatt Choi may not be the oldest coffee pro-ducer in Tenom, but it certainly is the fastest growingand the most popular. In 1999 the former PrimeMinister Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad launchedTenom Fatt Choi Coffee. Then in 2004 Foong openedhis coffee factory to educational visits. 3 years later, the rising popularity pushed him to build cabins (whichare, by the way, made almost entirely out of teakwood) on his plantation for overnight visitors.

After a while we head to the cabins about we weregoing to be staying in, 10 minutes away from the cof-fee bar in town. The 5 cabins atop the hill where MrFoong’s plantation lies are each furnished with twobunk beds to accommodate 4, attached bathrooms,

hot showers, a fan and air-conditioning. Allrooms are of course equipped with comple-mentary coffee and coffee making facilities. From the hill the view is more than beautiful. Before you the Padas River stretches acrossthe luscious green rainforest of the valleywith broad, green hills as a backdrop.

With grey clouds looming over our heads,we quickly geared up for the trek on the FattChoi Rafflesia Trail to see a Rafflesia inbloom. Mr Foong and his son trekked with usand brought us through a rubber plantationand up and down steep hills on a slippery ter-rain caused by a downpour the night before. The trek was tougher than expected butnothing too arduous. We reach our destina-tion about 40 minutes later and sure enough, there lay the largest flower in the world. It hadbegun to wither, but what remained of it wasstill impressive.

It was a rafflesia kerii measuring about 50

cm across. There are 26 species of Rafflesiafound only in Southeast Asia on the MalayPeninsula, Borneo, Sumatra and Kalimantan,West Malaysia, and the Philippines, 7 ofwhich are found in Sabah and Sarawak. Some species of the flower like the rafflesiaarnoldii can grow to over 100 cm across andweigh up to 10 kg. This carnivorous flowerwas supposed to smell like rotten meat butthankfully this one somehow didn’t. Not toofar from the fully grown flower were two podswaiting to bloom. They looked like compactdark brown cabbages, and would come intoflower only after a few months and then beginwilting only after 7 days. Delighted and satis-fied with our find, we trek back, unbotheredby the drizzle.

After freshening up, we sit around chat-ting and drinking delicious complimentaryTenom Fatt Choi Coffee while the rain pouredheavily over Tenom. By the smell of it, ourbarbecue dinner was almost ready and so we

Page 13: Sabah Malaysian Borneo Buletin April 2008

eagerly herded towards the barbecue house. There was rice, curry, chicken wings, satay, boiled vegetables and a few other lip-smackingdishes. On the barbecue, we had what lookedlike an unlimited supply fresh fish from thePadas River. We stayed up eating and nibblinguntil it felt like we were bursting at the seamsand turned in early for the next day’s programme.

Sunday morning began at 6.30am with aTai Chi session. Tai Chi is a soft martial art thathad it’s beginnings in China in the 1820s and iscommonly practised by Malaysians, especiallythe Chinese, for health and longevity. Ourinstructor is a Tai Chi Master with 30 years ofexperience, and he had previously participatedin numerous Tai Chi martial art demonstrationsin China. He was none other than the CoffeeKing himself, Mr. Foong! There with him were 4other Tai Chi seniors from the local tai chigroup. They were there to demonstrate themoves, but Mr. Foong demonstrated the

moves on them as well. Our Tai Chi Masterproved that the soft martial art had the poten-tial to really hurt an aggressor by tossing andflipping his friends with the slightest gesture. One or two of us learnt that they weren’t actingthe pain out, the hard way!

After the exercise we headed to the coffeebar for the much awaited coffee and breakfast. At breakfast Mr. Foong gave us the history ofcoffee and the background to Tenom Fatt ChoiCoffee. That may sound like a snore but I canassure you it was anything but boring! Mr.Foong’s humour and charisma had laughingand learning at the same time. Then we wenton the coffee factory tour and saw how coffeeis transformed from coffee cherries to theground form we use to brew our morningcuppa.

Tenom Fatt Choi Coffee produces 10-20tons of coffee a year. Their production includescoffee beans, coffee powder, instant coffee,

cinnamon coffee, 3 in 1 instant coffee mix, 2 in1 coffee mixture bags and the 5 in 1 Tongkat AliGinseng coffee mix. We purchase a good portion of their yearly production and before weknew it, our Tenom Coffee Adventure was over!

We brought home a lot more than just coffee. Between the trek to see the Rafflesiaand the laughs we had at breakfast, we hadenough good memories to have us smiling allthe way back to the city.

Pagi Ahad bermula pukul 6.30pagi dengansesi Tai Chi.

Tenom Fatt Choi Coffee menghasilkan 10-20 tan kopi setahun.

Kami membawa pulang bukan kopi semata-mata.
