It was one of those times when I felt I needed a nice, relaxing massage, so a colleague and I made an

appointment for an afternoon with Cres Moment inWarisan Square.

As I walked in I was greeted with the fresh scent oflemongrass and a staff with a welcoming smile. “HiYolanda, how nice to see you again! Please have aseat.” Soon I found myself seated and calmed with acup of ginger tea.

My colleague arrived and I had my cup refilledbefore our personal therapists greeted us and usheredus into our private massage coves. Our treatment thenbegan with a body scrub – to slough off dead skin cellsand leave your skin with a better complexion. It mademy skin feel tingly, a sign that the scrub was working. After about 30 minutes, I was covered in white scrubtreatment and my therapist, Lina, left the room aftertelling me she’d be back in 10 minutes.

She came back with a robe and led me to theprivate bath. My next treatment involved soaking in atub of warm, rich milk for 20 minutes. I spent thoseminutes singing along to the chill-out versions ofCeline Dion songs and drinking the cup of hot choco-late that sat next to the bath. Splashing around in milkmade definitely made me feel like royalty! I steppedout into the foot massage section with supple, glowingskin and yes, my skin did look and feel a lot smoother!

Foot reflexology took about 40 minutes, with eachfoot administered with pressure on certain points withthe aim of relieving stress and improving bodilyfunctions. This treatment can be a bit ticklish or painful(I usually feel like someone has rearranged my toes inthis session) but not this time - after the reflexologymassage, I was ready to slip into 4-inch heels again!

The final therapy was a full aromatherapy bodymassage. It was my absolute favourite, even betterthan the luxurious milk bath. It was so completelyrelaxing that I dozed off, had a dream (don’t rememberwhat, but it probably involved playing with puppies)and woke up with a hint of a smile.

It was exactly what I needed and wanted. And asCres Moment is located in the shopping precinct ofWarisan Square in Kota Kinabalu. The RDC is probably one of the most accessible rainforests in Sabahwith a primary function to create public awareness and appreciation of theimportance of conservation and sustainable use of forest resources. TheCentre is dense with plants from the rainforest and not only with plants fromBorneo but also plants from all over the world. The collection within thefacility includes tropical American plants, giant orchids, Rheophytic (carniv-orous) plants as well as an array of arid plants (plants that live in extreme-ly dry conditions.

Fish MassageYes, you read right. A Fish Massage sounds odd but it’s a uniqueexperience you might not be curious about enough to try. Locatedin Kampung Luanti of Ranau, the fish massage is made possible bythe Dusunic season of ‘Tagal’ which forbids fishing to preserve theenvironment and to prevent over-fishing. The fish will then havetime to multiply to a number exceeding hundreds. Soak either yourfeet or dip completely in the Luanti River, and the Fish Massage willbegin immediately. The affectionate fish, from the Cyprinidae fami-ly, will come close to you and smother your skin with gentle ‘kiss-es’. The sensation is unique - and one you won’t forget to tell yourfriends and family back home. Call Jeffrin Majangki at 088 878044 /016 8066958 for enquiries.

The Brunei people first introduced the kulintan-gan into Sabah, but it is also traditionally used

by the Bajaus. It is played mostly on festive occa-sions such as weddings and religious ceremonies, when it is played usually together with other tradi-tional Kadazan gongs.

The instrument consists of a set of about sevensmall brass gongs, which have different noteswhen they are struck. The gongs are placed loose-ly on a wooden stand, next to each other in a row.The player sits on the floor in front of the row ofgongs and beats them with two small wooden mal-lets.

The music of the kulintangan is very melodious, because there are both very high and low notes init. It is pleasant to hear, but very difficult to playwell.

During wedding ceremonies, the kulintangan isplayed together with another instrument called the‘rabana’. The rabana is played when the peoplelead the bride and bridegroom to the place of thewedding, while the kulintangan is only played in thehouse. The rabana is almost the same type ofinstrument as the kulintangan, except that thenotes are different and that the base of the instru-ment is covered with the skin of animals. Therabana has only five notes, and its gongs are notplaced together like the kulintangan.
