At the end of the Rosary, in English we traditionally pray: “O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death and resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech thee, that by meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise.” St. Bernard of Clairvaux referred to each day in the life of the Virgin as either a snow-colored rose or a blood-colored rose: white for her days of peace and purity and blood-colored on the days of her suffering and generous love. As we contemplate the Mysteries of the Rosary, aren’t our hearts moved with compassion and admiration for the Blessed Virgin Mary? Don’t we desire to be with her, rejoicing in her joys and consoling her in her sorrows? As we pray the different Mysteries with the smooth beads slipping through our fingers, we can pour out our hearts to the Virgin. The Irish have a beautiful phrase, “telling the beads”. There is a great freedom in the Rosary, because our Mother and our friend listens to us, and speaks back to us through the Mysteries of her Son’s life. Fr. Sacred Heart Catholic Church Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time –October 7, 2018

Reflection from the Pastor: October is traditionally the month of the Rosary, also called

“Psalter of the Laity” since the 150 Hail Mary’s of the full Rosary

correspond to the 150 Psalms that priests pray in the Divine Office. At the

end of the Rosary, in English we traditionally pray: “O God, whose only

begotten Son, by his life, death and resurrection has purchased for us the

rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech thee, that by meditating on these

mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may

imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise.”

St. Bernard of Clairvaux referred to each day in the life of the

Virgin as either a snow-colored rose or a blood-colored rose: white for her

days of peace and purity and blood-colored on the days of her suffering and

generous love. As we contemplate the Mysteries of the Rosary, aren’t our

hearts moved with compassion and admiration for the Blessed Virgin

Mary? Don’t we desire to be with her, rejoicing in her joys and consoling

her in her sorrows? As we pray the different Mysteries with the smooth

beads slipping through our fingers, we can pour out our hearts to the

Virgin. The Irish have a beautiful phrase, “telling the beads”. There is a

great freedom in the Rosary, because our Mother and our friend listens to

us, and speaks back to us through the Mysteries of her Son’s life.
