MEDITATION FOR FEBRUARY 16, 2020 Jesus came to fulfill the law so that heaven could be opened to the righteous.. Jesus’ teachings are not primarily about the joys and easiness of the Christian life, but rather about the commandments that our loving Father gives to us for our freedom and food. He, who is perfect love, made us in love and sent His Son out of live to teach us what it means to partake in His life-both here and forever.

In the first reading, Sirach tells the people they can choose to follow the commandments, or not. But keeping the commandments will save them. In Saint Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, he writs of the greatness prepared for those who love God. In the Gospel from Matthew, Jesus teaches about the law. He says that he has come to fulfill the law, and that those who keep it will be called the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA STATUE This week the Statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be in the home of the Jansi James Family. Please remember to pick up the black bags and returning them and the statue back to the priest’s sacristy on Saturday, February 22, 2020, after the 5pm Mass. Thank you for taking Our Lady on a journey through our parish.

INTENTIONS OF OUR HOLY FATHER We are invited to unite with our Holy Father, Pope Francis, for this universal intention during the month of February.

Listen to the Migrants’ Cries. That the cries of our migrant brothers and sisters, victims of criminal trafficking, may be heard and considered.

PARISHIONERS PLEASE NOTE:

On Monday February 17th, the School and Parish Center will be closed for President’s Day. There will be NO 9:00 am Mass and Eucharistic Adoration 7:00 pm in the evening.

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:20 The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear– it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sundays and then gossiping about a felloe parishioner on the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee. February 9th $21,884.70

POLISH BISHOPS CALL FOR JOHN PAUL II TO BE NAMED CO-PATRON OF EUROPE

Warsaw, Poland, Feb 5, 2020 / 01:21 pm (CNA).- Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki, head of the Polish Episcopal Conference, is calling for St. John Paul II to be declared a Doctor of the Church and a co-patron saint of Europe.

The late pope and recent saint should be recognized as a co-patron saint of Europe for his efforts to bring down the Iron Curtain and reunite Western Europe with Central and Eastern Europe, Gadecki said in a letter to the bishops of the world, asking for their support in the effort, according to Poland In.

“Fifty years of Soviet domination in East-Central Europe painted an image in many people’s minds of Europe consisting only of Germany, France, the UK, Italy and the Scandinavian countries. One might say that John Paul II ‘brought back’ half of Europe from ‘nonexistence’, [he brought back] grand and wonderful heritage of cultural and Christian roots,” wrote Gadecki.

Fr. Karol Wojtyla (who would later become Pope John Paul II) was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Krakow in 1946, shortly after a Soviet-backed communist government had come to power in Poland. Fr. Wojtyla promoted religious liberty and Christianity in the face of the anti-religious regime.

Wojtyla was ordained a bishop in 1958, and in his elevated position, fought the communists for the right to build a Catholic church in Nowa Huta, which was constructed specifically by the communists to be a city without God. During his time as archbishop of Poland, Woytjla staged a traditional Marian procession with an empty frame where the icon of Our Lady of Czestachowa would normally be - the communists had banned the procession of religious icons, but not of frames.

As pope, John Paul II returned to his homeland of Poland for nine days (instead of the planned two) in 1979, bringing a message of hope and solidarity to his people who were still under communist rule. President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II also met a total of four times before the Iron Curtain fell, including just six days before the president’s famous “tear down this wall” speech in 1987. Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev also met with Pope John Paul II in 1989, and later said that the fall of the Iron Curtain would not have been possible without him.

“The Polish Pope knew that the current cultural crisis is an epochal call to a wise return to the common historical heritage that Christianity is. In this regard, the saint Pope became… a protector of European values that constitute an irremovable foundation of the modern-day civiliza-tion,” Gadecki said.

“Twenty-seven years of Pope John Paul II’s pontificate was a breakthrough to the Church and the world both in the terms of his teachings and social influence,” Gadecki wrote. He added that in 2019, he asked Pope Francis to declare John Paul II a Doctor of the Church and co-patron of Europe on behalf of the leaders of the Church in Poland.

There are currently 36 Doctors of the Church, which are saints recognized for their universal importance to the Church due to their important teachings and great sanc-tity.

Europe currently has seven co-patron saints. St. Benedict of Nursia was declared “Patron Saint of all Europe” by Pope Paul VI in 1964. During his pontificate, Pope John Paul II declared Sts. Cyril and Methodius, St. Bridget of Sweden, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), St. Jadwiga of Poland as co-patrons of Europe.

KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR PARISH OFFICE

Are you new to the area? Are you a registered member of the parish?? Are you moving???

If you have recently moved into the area and have not yet registered in the parish, we encourage you to become a registered member. You may do so in a variety of ways: you can ask an usher for a registration packet after Mass; by stopping by or calling the Parish Office to obtain a registration packet. Once registered, you will receive quarterly mailing of parish offertory envelopes.

The use of an Offertory envelope helps us to track Mass attendance which affects your status as an active or inactive parishioner. Mass attendance, not the content of the offertory envelope, is reviewed twice a year and a letter is sent to those who have not used their envelopes in a specified time period.

It is necessary to be an ACTIVE, REGISTERED member of the parish in order to obtain Sponsor Letters which are needed to act as Godparents for Baptism or Sponsors for Confirmation. Sponsor letters cannot be given to those considered inactive (or not registered). We also ask that anyone seeking to be married in our church or to baptize a child be registered in the parish. If you are moving out of the parish, please contact the office around the time of your move so we may change our records accordingly and avoid sending you envelopes you don’t need.

Any questions, please call the Parish Office, 732-297-3000.
