FROM THE PASTOR: I would like to share with you

some information which was recently conveyed to me by the

Rockaway Borough Police Department. Please be advised

that the turning of Church Street into a ONE WAY

STREET is done only for Saturday from 4-9 pm and Sunday

from 6:30 am—1:30 pm. This is the only time the ordinance

allows for the ONE WAY STREET. I have been in dialogue

with the police department to add additional days (holy days,

Ash Wednesday, Christmas, etc.) to the ordinance since I am

regularly informed by parishioners and visitors to our church

regarding the side swiping of cars resulting in body damage

and side mirrors being destroyed. Church Street is a county

road and any adjustment to the ordinance must be done on

the county level. I am pursing this matter on the county

level! I advise you to please use caution as you park on

Church Street. Please do not park in the ONE WAY

STREET fashion during the week since the one way is only

enforced on Saturday and Sunday at the above stated times.

In addition, I invite you, especially the elderly, to take ad-

vantage of the parking spots near the rectory which have the

signs “Clergy Parking Only.” These are available for you

to use. Please obey all traffic and parking regulations, as

well as being courteous as you enter and leave our church

property. I appreciate your cooperation!

580-St. Cecilia

ST. CAMILLUS was born in 1550, in a small town of the Kingdom of Naples. In his youth he became a soldier and for some

time led a wayward life. He lost so much in gaming that he was forced to work as a laborer on a building belonging to the

Capuchins. An exhortation made to him by the guardian of the convent touched him and he resolved to change his conduct.

He now begged to be admitted into the Order, but Divine Providence willed otherwise. Twice he received the Capuchin habit,

but he was obliged each time to leave the novitiate, as he could not be admitted to profession on account of an ulcer on one of

his legs. He later went to Rome and entered the Hospital of Incurables, and after some time was appointed its administrator.

Regarding himself as the servant of the sick, he rendered them the most humiliating services.

At the age of thirty-two he undertook to study, beginning the first elements of grammar with the children. Having been or-

dained priest, he laid the foundation of the Congregation of Regular Clerics to administer to the sick. He had obstacles to en-

counter, but he triumphed over them all and succeeded in obtaining from the Apostolic See the approbation of his Institute.

Henceforth his life was entirely devoted to the sick and the dying, and after his death this work was continued by the Order he

had founded. The Saint had as confessor another Saint, namely, Philip Neri, the founder of the Oratory, who preceded him to

the tomb. St. Camilius was endowed by God with the spirit of prophecy and other supernatural gifts. He died on July 14,

1614, and was canonized in 1746 by Pope Benedict XIV.

PRAYER God, You adorned St. Camillus, Your Priest, with the singular grace of charity toward the sick. By his merits, pour

forth the spirit of Your love into us, so that by serving You in our brothers here on earth we may safely some to You at the

hour of death. Amen

Page 6 July 7, 2019 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

ST. CAMILLUS DE LESSIS, Priest July 14—Patron of Hospitals and the Sick

My dear parishioners,

Today we commemorate the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time in our celebration of the Lord’s Day. IN the Gospel we are told

of the “seventy two others” whom Jesus had sent out to proclaim the Kingdom of God by their words and deeds. These

“others” were in addition to the 12 men Apostles the Lord had chosen for a special ministry. The 72 return to Jesus testify-

ing to the success of their mission and that “even demons are subject to us.” The Lord sent them out with His blessing to

assist Him in the work of the Kingdom. The 72 are obedient to Jesus and follow His instruction. As a result of their collabo-

ration even satanic forces prove powerless in the thwarting of their ministry.

This periscope tells us that the larger group of 72 collaborators, ministers in harmony with the much smaller group of 12

Apostles, the larger group representing the lay faithful and the smaller group representing the ordained.

Being ordained for 44 years I have had enough experience to know that the lay faithful have a great influence in bringing

about the Kingdom of God. When others see committed lay faithful testify to their belief in Christ and His Church there is a

special credibility that is most attractive. Others will be especially attuned to listen to the witness of a devout Catholic and

will engage them in a conversation of wanting to know more of that which brings them joy.

That is why all of YOU, the larger group, are so important in the work of spreading the joy of the Gospel. Your words and

the deeds which define your life are what others will admire and wish to attain. You have a greater power, even surpassing

the ordained, in growing the Church in our local community. There are so many who are inactive, or who have left the

Church all together, whom the Lord is sending you to evangelize through your words and good deeds. You can get into

some places and situations which may not always be open to the clergy. As a result of this, you have an opportunity to do

miracles! You may not consider yourself to be a missionary but indeed you are called and sent by virtue of your Baptism

which configured you into Christ.

The challenge is to start seeing yourself as a part of the “72” that were called and sent to bring others to Jesus. And when

this happens and others will come because of the strength of your words and deeds don’t be surprised “but rejoice because

your names are written in heaven.”

See you in church!
