Our Parish’s History
The Early Days Our Catholic community is closely connected with the early history of this area. Just over 150 years ago, Indians roamed the land where we live. They hunted its prairies and fished the stream that wanders through the village. In 1854, John Happ sold the blacksmith shop he had opened in Winnetka after arriving from Trier, Ger-many in 1843, and moved with his nine sons and one daughter to a farm in Northfield. During the lat-ter half of the century, the area was farmed for hay, grain, alfalfa, mushrooms and horseradish. John was a Catholic and attended St. Joseph Church in Wil-mette. The Happ, Levernier and Seul families were among the first settlers in the area. In the early 1920’s, this little community was dramatically changed when the Skokie Valley Line of the North Shore Railway was built. The village got a name in 1926: it was called Wau-Bun, an In-dian word meaning dawn, which was also the name of a Potawatomi chief who had camped there in the 1700s. The name didn’t last very long. John Happ, the grandson of the original pioneer and first village president, presided over its change to Northfield in 1929—more euphonic it was thought. There were almost 280 residents at the time. The village had a burst of progress and growth, and then hibernated during the Great Depression. In 1930 the population was 320.
Formation of the Parish At the end of the Second World War, America’s population exploded as expected, but unlike other areas, Northfield didn’t experience amazing growth. By 1947, restrictions and price controls were ending. Soldiers and sailors were back in civilian life; families were reunited. The Yankees won the World Series; Notre Dame was undefeated; Ben Hogan was the golf champion; the Marshall Plan was begun to rehabilitate Europe, which experienced intolerable cold and hunger that year. Presi-dent Truman was proving a surprising leader. People cried that prices were skyrocketing. Pope Pius XII was the leader of the Church. Here in the Chicago area, after a long moratorium on any new building, Samuel Cardinal Stritch finally lifted the ban and founded a number of new parishes. The archbishop knew that the need for housing was bringing thousands of Catholics to the suburbs. In 1947, he and his advisers chose ten places that most needed a parish. Fr. Donald Temple was fin-ishing eighteen years as a professor of Greek and English at Quigley Seminary. He was asked to take charge of forming a parish in the little village of Northfield, twenty miles north of the Loop, three miles west of the shores of Lake Michigan. The parishioners were grateful to Sacred Heart, St. Joseph, St. Norbert, and SS. Faith, Hope and Charity Parishes, but they wanted their own spiritual home. The first Mass was offered on the last day of August 1947 by Father Temple in the basement of Sunset Ridge School. A house for Father Temple was later acquired at 2111 Old Willow Road, where the spiritual and temporal affairs of the parish were administered for sixteen years. Sunday Masses were offered on the porch during the spring, summer and fall, with the people on the lawn and a tent to cover them from sudden rain and the beating sun. Father Temple purchased a school bus so that Catholic children in Northfield could
attend classes at Sacred Heart School in Hubbard Woods. Al Lev-ernier, a pioneer in the Northfield area and trustee of St. Philip’s Church, purchased five acres of land from the Wagner family and donated it for the use of the new parish. Because parish revenues for 1947 and 1948 were limited, the archdiocesan consultors turned down plans for a $152,000 combination church-school building, reasoning that it was unrealistic to think parishioners could carry such a large debt. However, permission was granted for a simple church structure, minus the classrooms. It was for lack of numbers, not of spirit. In September 1950, ground was broken at Old Willow and Happ Roads for St. Philip the Apostle Church. Mass was offered for the first time in the new temporary church (now the gymna-sium) on Christmas 1950. To meet the interest payments on the mortgage, parishioners held card parties and social functions. Still, they dreamed of a parish school.
When the people heard there would be no school, they were dismayed and the pastor was discour-aged. Other parishes were growing and building, but St. Philip was not, at least not much, not enough. Father Temple had said, “Some day we’ll have a real church.” His final appearance as pas-tor took place on October 21, 1951. On that day, Auxiliary Bishop William E. Cousins dedicated St. Philip the Apostle Church, which had been completed according to the plans of Barry Byrne, a pro-tégé of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The day also marked the 25th anniversary of Father Temple’s ordination. He died on December 23, 1960, at the age of 58.
Parish Growth Fr. John Henry, a former assistant at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Chicago, was named pastor of St. Philip’s on December 10, 1951. He was convinced that the parish would never grow without a school, so he pleaded with the archdiocesan consultors for permission to build one. Although the weekly collection amounted to only $200 at the time, permission was granted after a successful fund drive in which $37,000 was pledged by the parish’s 109 families. An eight-room school with temporary convent quarters was built at 1980 Old Willow Road. Three Sisters of St. Dominic from Sinsinawa, Wisconsin opened St. Philip the Apostle School on September 10, 1953, with an enrollment of 87 students in grades one through six. When school re-opened in the fall of 1954, 168 students were in attendance in grades one through eight. In 1954, four more adjoining acres were purchased by the parish, confident that its membership would increase in the coming years. The story of Father Henry’s dedicated efforts has been told and retold. The Women’s Guild and the 500 Club put aside their personal plans and worked many days far into the night to see that the dream became a reality. On De-cember 14, 1962, the sisters moved into the new convent, which had been built at 1976 Old Willow Road according to the plans of architect Larry Schwall. Before long, the present rectory at 1962 Old Willow Road, also designed by Schwall, was com-pleted. The priests’ former residence at 2111 Old Willow Road was sold to the John P. Gallagher fam-ily. Of course, there was a sizable debt in the hun-dreds of thousands.
The Dedication of the Church The temporary church had been built according to the draw-ings of Barry Byrne. For the design of the new church, Father Henry turned to parishioner Alex H. Bacci of Schmidt, Garden and Erickson. They put their heads together and harmonized the new structure with the existing buildings, resulting in a striking unity with the apex at Happ Road. Beautiful panels of faceted and stained glass form the frontal fenestration. The Holy Trinity and our heavenly patron, St. Philip, are symboli-cally depicted. Note the triangle, symbol of the Trinity, and the color green representing the hope of salvation in Christ. In the two lower panels, blue for heaven and brown for earth, suggest God’s creation. There is a beautiful baptistery, a circular staircase leading to the choir and, originally, a bell tower supporting a stainless steel cross. The interior of the church makes a remarkable impression with its simple, chaste beauty. It is unmistakably a church, with the tall, concrete arches supporting the roof beams and calling the people to lift their hearts and minds to God. The serpentine masonry walls of the side aisles faced with gold and white mosaic are striking. But it is the sanctuary that is eye-catching for its white and green-veined marble, with everything focusing on the beautiful mar-ble altar, where the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered. It is surmounted by a high oak cross with a lindenwood corpus carved in Florence, Italy by Rinaldo Senoner.
Mass in the new church was celebrated for the first time on Thanks-giving Day, November 28, 1963. On March 8, 1964, Albert Cardinal Meyer dedicated the new parish church, convent and rectory. At the time of the dedication, St. Philip’s Parish numbered 475 families, with an enrollment of 371 children in the parish school. On the first day of 1967, Father Henry’s great heart broke, and God called him home. He had finished his work.
Fr. William Dorney, from St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Hyde Park, was appointed pastor by John Cardinal Cody. One of his first concerns was the parish school. The faculty was increased, and a new library was added at a cost of $25,000. Under Father Dorney’s leadership, the reforms called for by the Second Vatican Council were implemented at the parish. The silver jubilee of the founding of St. Philip the Apostle Parish was celebrated on November 26, 1972. Following the retirement of Sister Joseph, O.P., Margaret McMahon became the first lay principal of St. Philip the Apostle school, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 1973. The Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters left the school in 1975 and were followed by a community of Servite Sisters, who taught until 1987. At the time Father Dorney began his work in Northfield, the parish debt stood at $304,200, with annual interest payments of $18,000. Although the parish numbered only 500 families, the Sun-day collections averaged $1,800 per week. Through the generosity of the parishioners, the parish debt was retired by the end of 1974. Father Dorney retired in 1981 and was succeeded for four years by Fr. Richard Saudis. In 1985, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin appointed Fr. Laurence Dunn, who had previously served here as an associate pastor, as the new pastor of St. Philip’s. By 1987 it was clear that the parish facilities were in need of an overall refurbishing, so $300,000 was raised for this purpose by the “No Frills
Campaign.” When the archdiocesan-wide Millennium Campaign began, St. Philip’s parishioners pledged over $1 million to upgrade all our facilities with new roofing, electrical wiring, tuck-pointing, landscaping and improvements to the heating and air conditioning system. However, due to declining enrollment and increasing costs, St. Philip’s School had to close in 2003 after providing excellent Catholic education for 50 years. That same year Francis Cardinal George appointed Msgr. Robert J. Dempsey as St. Philip’s sixth pastor.
Where We Are Today Today St. Philip’s is going strong. Our parish includes 550 families and continues to attract new parishioners each year. Our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) educates over 120 children each year in the Catholic faith. With the closure of St. Philip’s School, the parish enjoys good finan-cial footing by leasing the school building to the Hyde Park Day School. Long-standing organizations, such as the Women’s Guild and the Men’s Club, continue to be strong, providing social and educational pro-grams for the parish and our local community. Our parish gives generously to our sharing parish, St. Benedict the African, which relies on our help to offer their parishioners faith formation and to sup-port their everyday needs.
In honor of the parish’s sixtieth anniversary nine years ago, plans were ini-tiated to enhance our facilities. The Buildings and Grounds Committee, together with the Parish Finance Committee, developed a plan to provide more accessibility for our handicapped worshipers. A bathroom has been installed in the front of the church in the space between the rectory and the church building. A new addition was constructed along the east wall of the church. This room provides more meeting space for our many par-ish activities. A new bell tower has replaced the old one that had to be torn down several years ago. Thanks to donations from the Women’s Guild, a new parish sign was erected on Old Willow Road and extensive renovations have been made to the convent. We are sixty-nine years young and have come a long way. We pray that the Lord will continue to bless the success of our parish for many genera-tions to come.

Saint Philip the Apostle The Patron of Our Parish
Feast Day: May 3
The patron saint of our parish, St. Philip, came from Bethsaida in Galilee and was called by the Lord to follow him the day after St. Peter and St. Andrew. He may have been a disciple of John the Baptist and is mentioned as one of the apostles in the lists of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and in Acts. Aside from the lists, he is mentioned only by John in the New Testament. He was called by Jesus him-self and brought Nathanael to Christ. Philip was present at the miracle of the loaves and fishes, when he engaged in a brief dialogue with the Lord, and was the apostle ap-proached by Hellenistic Jews from Bethsaida to introduce them to Jesus. Just before the passion, Jesus answered Philip’s query to show them the Father, but no further mention of Philip is made in the New Testament beyond his listing among the apostles awaiting the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room. Later stories about Saint Philip’s life can be found in the anonymous Acts of Philip. This non-canonical book re-counts the preaching and miracles of Philip. Following the resurrection of Jesus, Philip was sent with Bartholo-mew to preach in Greece, Phrygia, and Syria. Included in
the Acts of Philip is an appendix entitled “Of the Journey-ings of Philip the Apostle: From the Fifteenth Act Until the End, and Among Them the Martyr-dom.” This appendix gives an account of Philip’s martyrdom in the city of Hierapolis. Accord-ing to this account, through a miraculous healing and his preaching Philip converted the wife of the proconsul of the city. This enraged the proconsul, and he had Philip and Bartholomew tortured. Philip and Bartholomew were then crucified upside-down, and Philip preached from his cross. As a result of Philip’s preaching the crowd released Bartholomew from his cross, but Philip insisted that they not release him, and so he died on the cross. The Church regards the accounts of his death as legendary.
Prayer for St. Philip the Apostle O glorious Saint Philip, at the Last Supper you said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father and it will be enough for us.” Help us to make this our prayer also and to seek God in all things. Obtain for us the grace to know the Father and Jesus Christ whom he has sent―for in this does eternal life consist.

Our Parish Religious Education and CARE Programs
St. Philip the Apostle’s Religious Education Program is led by faith-filled people, guided by the Holy Spirit and the Gospel, striving to share the Good News of Jesus Christ…
to CELEBRATE together because the Lord is in our midst and dwelling within us, to CARE about each other, sharing our joys and sorrows, to GROW in awareness of Jesus, alive and active in our lives, to HELP our children learn Christian values and set goals, to INVITE everyone to share in one another’s goodness, talents, hopes and visions. The people of St. Philip the Apostle REACH OUT to ALL because we are sisters and brothers in Christ! St. Philip the Apostle’s Parish Religious Education Program (PREP and CARE) recognizes that parents are the primary religious educators. It is through parents, together with and supported by other members of the faith community, that the Gospel of Jesus is proclaimed and celebrated. Our parish religious education program, cooperating with the parents of our students, endeavors to reinforce the faith life of our young people in three important ways: First, PREP/CARE attempts to build a community of faith among the catechists and students through regular Mass attendance, shared prayer, and other activities. Second, PREP/CARE encourages and enables its participants to become like Jesus, persons of loving service to others. Third, PREP/CARE seeks to help not just the students, but their parents and catechists as well, to grow in their knowledge of Church traditions, teachings and doctrine, and the unconditional love of God for us all. Based on the primacy of parental involvement and supported by the cooperative efforts of the total parish community, the Parish Religious Edu-cation Program of St. Philip the Apostle has for its goals the forming of a Christian attitude and the development of faith in each individual – parent, child, and catechist. PREP is offered to elementary and junior high school students who do not attend Catholic school. The sessions are held on Sunday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the school building, led by our generous volun-teer catechists. CARE (Children and Religious Education) is designed for pre-school-age children (four years old) and kindergarten-age children (five years old). It uses stories, poetry and hands-on activities to help children tell their own stories and reflect on their feelings and choices as filtered through the Gos-pel message of Jesus. The program also meets Sunday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. in the school building. For more information about either program, please contact our Director of Religious Education, David Retseck at (847) 446-8390.

To Teach Who Christ Is
In 2015, St. Philip the Apostle participated in Wave IV of To Teach Who Christ Is—a capital campaign with an overall Archdiocesan goal of $350 million to benefit parishes, Catholic education, and faith formation in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We were given a parish goal of $550,000. Sixty percent of all revenues pledged up to this goal would remain with the parish; one hundred percent of all funds raised above this goal would also remain with the parish.
Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, we received a total of $952,940 in pledges. Over the next five years, we will realize a total of $731,940 to be spent on capital needs in the parish such as replacement of the upper and lower church roofs, renovation of the church vestibule, and installation of a new heating and air conditioning system in the gym. We will establish a financial aid fund for our PREP families to ensure that all who wish to receive catechesis will be able to do so without financial worry or hardship. To Teach Who Christ Is will not only benefit our parish, but the entire Archdiocese of Chicago. $150 million is targeted for scholarships for students in Catholic schools throughout the Archdiocese. $30 million will be used for critical capital needs for repairs in parishes in financial distress. $10 million will fund religious education and catechesis needs for religious education coordinators, youth ministers, religious education directors, and other catechists. $8 million will go toward strengthening the academic excellence of our Catholic schools through professional development for teachers and principals and upgrading programs and technology. $2 million is earmarked for innovation and the study of best practices and approaches for religious education. To Teach Who Christ Is reminds us that we are truly a community, truly part of the body of Christ. The money that we have raised here at St. Philip the Apostle is a testimony to the open hearts and forward thinking of our parishioners. Our spirit has an impact, not only for ourselves, but for those who will come after us. Our participation in To Teach Who Christ Is shows our understanding that the body of Christ is alive and well, our realization that it is our calling to support not only our own parish’s future, but of parishes and people throughout the Archdiocese whom we will never know. Our time, talent, and treasure will help support the physical needs, the educational needs, and the spiritual needs of ourselves and our brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank you for your generosity and, above all, your prayers.

Finance Committee The St. Philip Finance Committee has been an invaluable resource for the parish over the last three decades. Ac-cording to canon law, a parish’s Finance Committee is to serve in an advisory and consultative capacity to the pas-tor in ensuring the responsible and forward-looking stewardship of the parish’s resources for the continuation of the parish’s mission and goals. The Finance Committee schedules quarterly meetings throughout the year and other specific meetings as necessary. Meetings focus upon quarterly reports, the end-of-year statement and projec-tion reports; the Finance Committee also attends to extraordinary expenditures and to the parish properties’ main-tenance schedule. Jim Dietz, Chair Robert Ribordy Raymond Berry Robert Snediker Gerry Daleiden Peggy Thordarson Robert Dineen Msgr. Robert J. Dempsey, Pastor Marge Livingston Art Blumberg, Director of Parish Operations Thomas McCarron
Building and Grounds Committee The Building and Grounds Committee also has an advisory and consultative role with the pastor in responsibly tending to the safety, integrity and beauty of our parish’s facilities. The Committee’s expertise has proven invalu-able in prioritizing necessary repairs and improvements, and in developing a long-range maintenance schedule.

Amate House…Forming Leaders for the Church and World
Since its inception in 1984, Amate House has made a profound impact on individuals and communities
throughout the city and Archdiocese of Chicago. Amate House Volunteers commit to a year of service in Chi-
cago’s underserved schools, parishes, and nonprofit organizations. Volunteers live in a supportive community
along with their peers in Chicago’s McKinley Park, Little Village and Uptown communities. In addition to
serving the marginalized, Amate House Volunteers benefit from ongoing spiritual development and faith for-
mation focusing on community, faith, service, social justice and stewardship.
Amate House is an agency of the Archdiocese of Chicago; however the organization is completely self-
funded. Visit our website: www.amatehouse.org to learn more about Amate House or contact John Lucas,
Executive Director at 773.376.2445.
