NOT AGAINST US Like Moses before him, Jesus corrects his disciples’ misun-derstanding of the gift of the Spirit. They saw people who were not of their company casting out demons and doing other works such as Jesus had done. Jesus points out that no one who does a good deed in his name can be opposed to him at the same time. He goes on to point out the importance of the “little ones,”: the poor, simple people, children, the meek ones who are not im-portant in the world. It is to them that he was sent, not to the wealthy and the self-righteous. He underscores the importance of small works done in faith, as well as big works like driving out demons. “Anyone who gives you a cup of water . . . because you belong to Christ . . . will surely not lose his reward” (Mark 9:41). God builds the coming reign little by little in our actions, howev-er small and unassuming, when they are done out of love of God and neighbor.

III. MATRIMONIAL CONSENT

1625 The parties to a marriage covenant are a baptized man and woman, free to contract marriage, who freely express their consent; "to be free" means: - not being under constraint; - not impeded by any natural or ecclesiastical law. 1626 The Church holds the exchange of consent between the spouses to be the indispensable element that "makes the marriage."127 If consent is lacking there is no marriage. 1627 The consent consists in a "human act by which the partners mutually give themselves to each other": "I take you to be my wife" - "I take you to be my husband."128 This consent that binds the spouses to each other finds its fulfillment in the two "becoming one flesh."129 1628 The consent must be an act of the will of each of the contracting parties, free of coercion or grave external fear.130 No human power can substitute for this consent.131 If this freedom is lacking the marriage is invalid. 1629 For this reason (or for other reasons that render the marriage null and void) the Church, after an examination of the situation by the competent ecclesiastical tribunal, can declare the nullity of a marriage, i.e., that the marriage never existed.132 In this case the contracting parties are free to marry, provided the natural obligations of a previous union are discharged.133 1630 The priest (or deacon) who assists at the celebration of a marriage receives the consent of the spouses in the name of the Church and gives the blessing of the Church. The presence of the Church's minister (and also of the witnesses) visibly expresses the fact that marriage is an ecclesial reality. 1631 This is the reason why the Church normally requires that the faithful contract marriage according to the ecclesiastical form. Several reasons converge to explain this requirement:134 - Sacramental marriage is a liturgical act. It is therefore appropriate that it should be celebrated in the public liturgy of the Church; - Marriage introduces one into an ecclesial order, and creates rights and duties in the Church between the spouses and towards their children; - Since marriage is a state of life in the Church, certainty about it is necessary (hence the obligation to have witnesses); - The public character of the consent protects the "I do" once given and helps the spouses remain faithful to it. 1632 So that the "I do" of the spouses may be a free and responsible act and so that the marriage covenant may have solid and lasting human and Christian foundations, preparation for marriage is of prime importance. The example and teaching given by parents and families remain the special form of this preparation. The role of pastors and of the Christian community as the "family of God" is indispensable for the transmission of the human and Christian values of marriage and family,135 and much more so in our era when many young people experience broken homes which no longer sufficiently assure this initiation:

It is imperative to give suitable and timely instruction to young people, above all in the heart of their own families, about the dignity of married love, its role and its exercise, so that, having learned the value of chastity, they will be able at a suitable age to engage in honorable courtship and enter upon a marriage of their own.136

III. El consentimiento matrimonial

1625 Los protagonistas de la alianza matrimonial son un hombre y una mujer bautizados, libres para contraer el matrimonio y que expresan libremente su consentimiento. "Ser libre" quiere decir: — no obrar por coacción; — no estar impedido por una ley natural o eclesiástica. 1626 La Iglesia considera el intercambio de los consentimientos entre los esposos como el elemento indispensable "que hace el matrimonio" (CIC can. 1057 §1). Si el consentimiento falta, no hay matrimonio. 1627 El consentimiento consiste en "un acto humano, por el cual los esposos se dan y se reciben mutuamente" (GS 48,1; cf CIC can. 1057 §2): "Yo te recibo como esposa" — "Yo te recibo como esposo" (Ritual de la celebración del Matrimonio, 62). Este consentimiento que une a los esposos entre sí, encuentra su plenitud en el hecho de que los dos "vienen a ser una sola carne" (cf Gn 2,24; Mc 10,8; Ef 5,31). 1628 El consentimiento debe ser un acto de la voluntad de cada uno de los contrayentes, libre de violencia o de temor grave externo (cf CIC can. 1103). Ningún poder humano puede reemplazar este consentimiento (CIC can. 1057 §1). Si esta libertad falta, el matrimonio es inválido. 1629 Por esta razón (o por otras razones que hacen nulo e inválido el matrimonio [cf. CICcan. 1095-1107]), la Iglesia, tras examinar la situación por el tribunal eclesiástico competente, puede declarar "la nulidad del matrimonio", es decir, que el matrimonio no ha existido. En este caso, los contrayentes quedan libres para casarse, aunque deben cumplir las obligaciones naturales nacidas de una unión precedente anterior (cf CIC, can. 1071 § 1, 3). 1630 El sacerdote ( o el diácono) que asiste a la celebración del matrimonio, recibe el consentimiento de los esposos en nombre de la Iglesia y da la bendición de la Iglesia. La presencia del ministro de la Iglesia (y también de los testigos) expresa visiblemente que el Matrimonio es una realidad eclesial. 1631 Por esta razón, la Iglesia exige ordinariamente para sus fieles la forma eclesiástica de la celebración del matrimonio (cf Concilio de Trento: DS 1813-1816; CIC can 1108). Varias razones concurren para explicar esta determinación: — El matrimonio sacramental es un acto litúrgico. Por tanto, es conveniente que sea celebrado en la liturgia pública de la Iglesia. — El matrimonio introduce en un ordo eclesial, crea derechos y deberes en la Iglesia entre los esposos y para con los hijos. — Por ser el matrimonio un estado de vida en la Iglesia, es preciso que exista certeza sobre él (de ahí la obligación de tener testigos). — El carácter público del consentimiento protege el "Sí" una vez dado y ayuda a permanecer fiel a él. 1632 Para que el "Sí" de los esposos sea un acto libre y responsable, y para que la alianza matrimonial tenga fundamentos humanos y cristianos sólidos y estables, la preparación para el matrimonio es de primera importancia: El ejemplo y la enseñanza dados por los padres y por las familias son el camino privilegiado de esta preparación. El papel de los pastores y de la comunidad cristiana como "familia de Dios" es indispensable para la transmisión de los valores humanos y cristianos del matrimonio y de la familia (cf. CIC can 1063), y esto con mayor razón en nuestra época en la que muchos jóvenes conocen la experiencia de hogares rotos que ya no aseguran suficientemente esta iniciación:

«Los jóvenes deben ser instruidos adecuada y oportunamente sobre la dignidad, tareas y ejercicio del amor conyugal, sobre todo en el seno de la misma familia, para que, educados en el cultivo de la castidad, puedan pasar, a la edad conveniente, de un honesto noviazgo, al matrimonio» (GS 49,3).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From its earliest days, the Church has had an interest in the edu-cation of young people. In ancient Rome, teachers of boys had to resign their posts in order to become catechumens, since the edu-cation of boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public education has been so attuned to other val-ues that creative solutions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, govern-ment schools had a goal of “Anglicizing” the Irish in culture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of “hedge schools.” In these largely secret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cottages and barns throughout Ireland, schoolmas-ters provided eager students with a classical education grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish literature, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws forbade Catholics from teaching young people publicly or privately, and “civil disobe-dience” ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish children enrolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by opening schools for the poor. Eventually her companions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, inspired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same pur-pose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that diminished their love of learning and threatened their faith.

INTRODUCCIÓN A LA LITURGIA DEL DÍA La gracia de Dios se difunde a través de toda la tierra, nos llega de muchas maneras, y en menudo a través de personas y situaciones inesperadas. En esta Misa que celebremos hoy reflexionemos acerca de cómo hemos experimentado la gra-cia de Dios en nuestra vida y abrámonos a la posibilidad de recibirla en cualquier tiempo y lugar.

¿QUIÉN ESTÁ A NUESTRO FAVOR? Jesús, como Moisés que estuvo antes que él, corrige los ma-lentendidos de los discípulos sobre el don del Espíritu. Vieron a personas, que no eran parte de su grupo, echar demonios y hacer otros milagros como Jesús había hecho. Jesús señala que nadie que hace milagros en su nombre puede luego hablar mal de él. Luego señala la importancia de la “gente sencilla”: los pobres, las personas sencillas, los niños, los humildes que no son impor-tantes en el mundo. Es a ellos a quienes fue enviado, no a los ricos ni a los farisaicos. Jesús hace hincapié en la importancia de las pequeñas obras hechas con fe, de la misma manera que las grandes obras como echar a los demonios. “Todo aquél que les dé a beber un vaso de agua…por el hecho de que son de Cristo…les aseguro que no se quedará sin recompensa” (Marcos 9:41). Dios construye el Reino por venir poco a poco con nuestras ac-ciones, sin importar que sean pequeñas o sencillas, si se las hace por amor a Dios y al prójimo.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1648 el franciscano Matías Abad llegó a la selva chocoana en la costa pacífica de Colombia. Allí, a pesar de los ataques indígenas en contra de los misioneros, pudo celebrar la fiesta de san Francisco (4 de octubre). Al pasar de los años la devoción a san Francisco en Chocó se convirtió en una mezcla de la fe católica, las religiones africanas y la brujería. Este sincretismo es una forma de superstición que busca utilizar al santo en lugar de imitarlo. Esta confianza en imágenes y estatuas es común y hasta peligrosa entre los latinoamericanos. Las hazañas de ciertas imágenes milagrosas llegan a proporciones exageradas. Por ejemplo, la imagen de “san Pachito”, como lo llaman los chocoanos, se le atribuye haber apagado un incendio que amenazaba la población. La pusieron delante de las llamas y las apagó con su propio sudor. Hay que tener cuidado con la importancia de las imágenes sagradas de nuestras tradiciones. En un descuido pueden convertirse en ídolos o amuletos en lugar del recuerdo de la presencia divina y el desafío de vivir en santidad.
