Scintillating 2015!

The New Year has already started in a wonderful spirit at the resort as all our team members contemplate a year of

achievement and excellence. The drive and the desire to meet and go beyond our guests’ expectations are always very present in all moves. This year at Sainte Anne Island is a turning point in its history with renewed enthusiasm and vigour.

To start this challenging but thrilling twelve months, our team members were all busy to greet and treat the numerous guests who came for memorable moments during the festive period. Each team member performed brilliantly during these demanding times and did so with the usual smile, which characterizes the spirit of the resort. From arrival to departure, our guests were overwhelmed by the grace and care they were shown everywhere. Upon arrival at the counter at the Mahe Gateway, on the boat shuttle to the island, on landing at the jetty, on check-in, in the restaurants, in their villas, on the beach, during their spa treatment, on the tennis court, on their hiking trips around the island, all the guests experienced this good and warm feeling of being among loving persons.

2015 is also a year of change in the way the resort will henceforth operate. It will shift to a mode, which makes this welcome and service even more personal and efficient. Our team members are committed to work in line with these new standards, which will make Sainte Anne Island more attractive than ever. We are geared towards change and are looking forward to have the expected results rather sooner than later.

Our luxury barefoot concept has already taken off marvellously meeting the requirements of most demanding guests. We will consolidate this way of living by increasing our daily work ethics and attitude. We are already reshuffling the responsibilities of our management

team and will soon do so at other levels as we keep pace with a more demanding environment in the hospitality industry.

Some great events await us in this New Year. Soon we shall host the most attractive Beachcomber Aventure, a most anticipated gathering, which will conclude months of sales challenges on the French market. This drive to conceive original marketing events will surely continue in the coming months for our resort and our country to improve its market share on our main as well as on emerging markets. Our close collaboration with the tourism authorities is yet another policy that we cherish and that we will favour during this year.

We are convinced that our concerted efforts to support and develop our industry will bear fruits for the benefits of the whole Seychelles nation. All staff members at Sainte Anne Island stand firm for the growth and sustainability of the main bread earner of our country.

It will also be scintillating when we shall host some major social events for our fellow citizens in our nearby and national community. In 2015, we expect and wish to trigger actions that will continue to serve the cause of education and our natural surroundings.

Sainte Anne Island partnered with The Diplomatic Spouses Association (DSA) for its fifth annual fundraising bazaar in December at the National Library in Victoria. The resort

donated 60 used bicycles, which were thoroughly refurbished by the Maintenance team. These bikes have been replaced by an order of new ones that will now be used by the guests on the resort.

The donation was a great success at the bazaar, which aims every year at raising funds to support local charity projects and institutions. The DSA regroups wives of members of the diplomatic corps and a limited number of other expatriates; local ladies are also invited. Valérie Couvreur, the wife of the resort’s General Manager, is actually an active member and was present at the fair busy helping in the sales of the numerous items received as donations.

«At the DSA, we operate as a complete voluntary, non-profit organization in promoting international friendship and strengthening relations with Seychelles. Our main focus is the paediatric section of the Ministry of Health, orphanages, old people’s homes and schools. Above all, we support concrete projects. We want to see what we are funding,» Valérie told INSIGHT.

«I would like here to thank Valérie and her husband. The bikes from Sainte Anne Island were very quickly sold. Without this generous donation, we would

have been a lot less successful. And I would have not enjoyed the event as much,» Lalita Mayadas, one of DSA’s members noted.

During the bazaar, visitors were also able to have a taste of all the countries represented: vodka from Russia, gin from Great Britain, biryani from India, tea from Sri Lanka, Japanese sushi, French crêpes and many more!

Turtle-nesting season in the Seychelles generally starts around the end of August until late February. This season, the Seychelles National Parks Authority

(SNPA), Sainte Anne Island and the University of Seychelles (UNISEY) have teamed up to clean two nesting beaches on Sainte Anne Island. The aim of this clean-up was to remove any marine debris washed up on the beaches, so as to create space where turtles can nest.

The clean-up team was provided with gloves, bin bags, pre-packed snacks and refreshments before splitting up into groups to cover the beaches.

Those with higher endurance went walking for about an hour to Anse Manon. The other group went to Anse Cabot, located about 30 minutes’ walking distance from the island’s only jetty.

«I am so happy that the resort is taking very good care of the environment surroundings. Sainte Anne is a very fascinating place to visit with wonderful stories. I always have this delightful feeling when I walk barefoot on the island’s numerous pristine beaches. This place is meaningful to me because I spent almost one year of my life here at the National Youth Service, which is now history for my child and students,» Marie-May Iman said after the visit.

I t is always with great happiness and humility that the resort hosts its elderly neighbours. In line with its tradition, Sainte Anne Island welcomed a group of senior citizens at its

Residence at the Ex-Reef hotel during the festive season. Apart from the warm greeting from the team members, the guests were treated to a

lunch and some entertainment. Amongst the visitors, was Miss Rubuck, also known as Madame Measy, our former Nursing Officer who worked at the resort from 2002 to 2005. At 76, she is now devoting her time to the organisation of church and social activities. INSIGHT sends its best wishes to Madame Measy.

A group of pupils from Mont Fleuri School paid a visit to the resort recently. They enjoyed the walk around the island while

their teachers explained its history with World War II relics and the former National Youth Services (NYS) buildings standing as witnesses. Many teachers recalled their own souvenirs of the days they spent at the NYS in the eighties. The pupils listened attentively to the explanations in this Seychelles wildlife discovery outing. But they did not miss enjoying the pleasures nature was offering them. They were seen playing hide-and-seek or taking a swing around the huge banyan trees. The group was, as usual, treated by the Food & Beverage team after their visit.

NEWSI N S I G H T

Sainte Anne Island has been firing on all cylinders on Twitter lately by posting constant messages. Success has been

instant with enormous number of re-tweets and followers around the world. Norbert Couvreur, General Manager of the resort, is sending information pertaining to the hotels and Seychelles on an hour-by-hour basis, to say the least. And it is still in the initial stage… Follow us on @norbertcouvreur

Flavien Joubert, the dynamic Director of the Seychelles Hotel School, wanted to share his vast knowledge of cocktail-making. So

he decided to make a book. The publication hit the shelves recently with huge success among the general public as well as among food and beverage professionals in Seychelles and overseas. Sainte Anne Island has even decided to share these wonderful recipes with its guests by offering the book for sale in its boutique. Some copies are also on display at the bar as a teaser where the guests can choose the cocktail/ mocktail du jour. A fitting example of promoting Seychelles product and initiatives!

New Sainte Anne Island billboard has now been fixed at the Seychelles Golf Club (SGC) at Anse-aux-Pins. This is a fitting

exposure for the resort at a most prestigious site. The billboard features a top shot of the resort and is placed near the first tee-off. This is yet another example of the partnership between the SGC and Sainte Anne Island. During the past two years, the resort has sponsored the participation of golfers in international tournaments. The resort also facilitated coaching sessions by French Golf Pro Olivier Magnou in early 2014 when pupils from Anse-aux-Pins School were initiated to the game. Sainte Anne Island also sponsors a yearly Open Golf Tournament in collaboration with the SGC.

A consignment of new bicycles arrived at the resort at the end of last year. The lot of 36 bikes (12 in each model: children, ladies

and men) arrived at a time when the old fleet of bicycles had done their time. The Maintenance Department quickly mounted the newly-landed bikes for immediate use with maximum security. The bicycles are solely used for rental to guests at the Sports Centre. The guests will now enjoy riding around the island on these comfortable and modern bikes. They will also use these facilities to shuttle from their bungalows to the different public areas on more secure bikes.

Sainte Anne Island is supporting the Seychelles Hospitality & Tourism Association in its activities to mark the National Day next June.

The resort is offering a prize to the Association National Day Lottery and is confident that the events organized by the SHTA for the National Day will reap great success.

Sainte Anne Island teamed up with the Seychelles Sports Fishing Club (SSFC) recently to host the prize-giving ceremony

of the annual SSFC Seychelles National Junior Fishing Tournament. Another good reason for this partnership is the SSFC’s objective to invite less fortunate young people to meet and have a fishing party with other youth of their age.

This year, the tournament experienced even greater success for this second edition as the number of participants made a significant rise from 72 to 120.

Grant Heyer, SSFC’s Executive Secretary, was quick to thank the resort for its support in this social event. «We must thank Sainte Anne Island for its participation in the record breaking SSFC Seychelles National Junior Fishing Tournament. We ended up close to one fish per junior and had a great day with all the juniors. We could not have done this without Sainte Anne Island's support. SSFC greatly appreciates. I would like to have a special thank you for the team members who went out of their way to make this event a success. The organization was great and so was the staff. I am sure the juniors won't forget it.»

Members of a family living in the Bel Air District in Mahé recently experienced a very sad plight as their house caught fire. They lost all their belongings and were left devastated after this most unfortunate event. The resort promptly and positively responded to a call

from Caritas Victoria for some aid to this family. Decision was immediately taken to donate a lot of unused furniture and bed sheets. Team members delivered the items to the family with great emotion. A true example of effective community care!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR TEAM MEMBERS

Le grand show

PEOPLE

This team is very discreet in its daily work but fundamental to the good and sound running of the resort. The team members of the Accounts Department operate at the heart of the house far from the front line but they have a

direct bearing on all aspects of the resort. This compact group of team members has five different sections to manage: the Payroll, the IT software and hardware, the Accounting & Debtors, the Internal Control and the Store & Purchasing.

All these sections are under the responsibility of Keni, Antoine and Wilderby. «We have 17 team members to operate in all these sections and, apart from Kevin, the Financial Controller (FC), all of us are Seychellois,» Keni, the Assistant FC, says. «Most of the staff members have been here for more than four years now, including three employees who have more than 10 years of service.»

Kevin also supports the fact that his colleagues have been here for many years because they are given all the opportunities to grow and succeed. «Keni, who joined some 6 years back as an accounts officer, is now the Assistant FC; Antoine, who started working at Sainte Anne Island 11 years back as storekeeper, is now Chief Internal Controller. Wilderby, who joined the resort as a controller, is now responsible of the Store & Purchasing Department and James, who also has a 10-year work experience with us, started as telephone operator and today he is a Senior Internal Controller.»

Lena Vidot has a job that has always spread happiness around her. She helps guests to tie the knot of marriage

in the best conditions by using all the required ingredients. She did not fancy that she would one day live in this glamorous and happy environment of weddings while doing her job. «I started my career as a traffic clerk at Air Seychelles and after 5 years, I opted to be a cabin attendant. Then I moved to Doha and worked as VIP Lounge agent for Qatar Airways where I met and assisted top-tier passengers.»

Then in 2014, Lena decided to change her career path and joined Sainte Anne Island as Wedding Coordinator. Now she is enjoying her new job so much that she can talk about it for hours. «I must admit that it’s a new dimension in my work experience. My job starts with exchanges of emails with the tour operators and the guests long before

they actually arrive in Seychelles. Much of the ground work is done during that period and when the guests arrive, it is time for fine-tuning and getting to more details or extras.»

Lena then holds meetings with the future couple and liaises with the

different service providers such as the photographer, the hairdresser, the make-up artist and the Civil Status Office. «I then start to prepare the whole program for the wedding and advise all departments concerned with the ceremony and the party. I must also make sure that the requested decorations are done.»

On the wedding day, Lena acts like the maestro who directs all the operations, checking that all is in place and be on the alert in case the couple has a last-minute request. Once all preparations are over, the couple is accompanied to the location that they have chosen for their wedding ceremony. «I must say that practically all the guests getting married are very cooperative despite being very nervous. In this job, you need to be creative and able to adapt to any change or unexpected circumstances. The best satisfaction for me is to see the faces of the newly-wed blooming with happiness. This is the ultimate pleasure for me.»

Work does not end after the ceremony. It is then time to ensure that the dinner or party that follows the wedding goes as planned. Finally, Lena has to draft her report and see off the couple for their honeymoon. Once again she has made another couple’s dream come true… The Mont Fleuri Restaurant has recently

introduced its new ‘à la carte’ menu. In this exceptional setting, guests can now savour some new tastes and flavours.

The new offer of Executive Chef Sanjesh and his team is based on local fresh products, like coconut palm hearts, star fruits, mangoes and jackfruits all coming from the gardens of Sainte Anne Island. All these products are expertly blended with fish, beef fillet, duck breast or chicken to produce succulent food. The underlying objective is to initiate guests to local produce and discover its culinary treasures. Since its introduction, the new ‘à la carte’ menu has been widely acclaimed by guests who welcome this subtle use of local products.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

INSIGHT met with FC, Kevin Vadamootoo, for a chat on his career and experience at Sainte Anne Island.

Kevin, give us a brief outlook on your career.

Actually, I joined the Beachcomber Group in 2005 at the age of 27. I came to Sainte Anne Island as Payroll and Administrative Officer and later as an Accounts Officer. I went back to the Mauritius in 2006 and worked in the Group as Internal Controller, Senior Personnel Officer and Accounts Officer. Then I was sponsored by the group to follow a BSC course in Human Resource Management.

How do you value the career path of your Seychellois staff?

I value it most. The career and human resource development of my staff is a primary concern. Training and coaching is an on-going process and, during the past three years, we have tried to encourage career development. I must say that I am a clear example of the resort’s desire to enhance its staff competencies. I was given the opportunity to progress in my job and my assignment as Financial Controller in 2013 is just the case. It must be said that the General Manager makes it a fundamental point to encourage his team members to make further steps and to encourage our local colleagues to accede to higher positions.

IMPROVING COMPETENCIES«The Accounts Department has a strong training policy for its members. On-the-job training for all employees is provided on a regular basis to ensure all team members keep pace with the latest developments in the job,» Antoine told INSIGHT. As a usual policy, newly promoted officers are always sent to an external institute to acquire additional skills in their new functions. Three team members, Antoine, Christian and Keni, have already been given the opportunity to attend training sessions overseas in Mauritius and in-house training is a continuous process.

AN OVERALL RESPONSIBILITYThe role of the Accounts Department has a large span over the resort’s activities. It includes the following duties and responsibilities:• Verify all hotel transactions including cash, billing of guests,

restaurant and bar.• Prepare regular reports for management• Establish monthly accounts, conduct monthly and yearly

stock-taking• Scrutinize all payments for the different services and goods

purchased.• Manage the assets of the company• Ensure that established procedures are adhered to• Prepare team members’ monthly salaries.• Monitor expenses • Keep good relations with external stakeholders: local

debtors, suppliers, bank, authorities and agencies

HIV screening test

The Human Resource Department and the Nursing Unit of the resort pooled in together to organize a HIV blood screening at the end of last year. This initiative was part of the activities organized in the context of World Aids Day.

Team members responded in great numbers at the blood collection unit set up for the occasion. The ‘Know your status’ slogan served its purpose very positively with team members eager to clear the test. After this medical exercise, all blood samples revealed a 100% negative result.

DISCOVERYI N S I G H T

The best ever festive seasonDuring the recent festive season,

the resort recorded its best occupancy rate ever. The team members lived up to

these moments at all levels with hard and dedicated work. Decoration, food, service and care were to the level of these festive moments. The dynamic team who decorated the public areas, the enthusiastic team members in the kitchen and the restaurants who prepared and served the food, the ever-present Room Division and Maintenance teams who were always on alert, all gave their best to make it a memorable moment for the guests. The team at the heart of the house too did its best to match the occasion. Team spirit was flying high around the resort…

THE DECORATIONThe centre point of the public area was by far the ecological and original Christmas tree placed in the middle of the lobby at the reception. Guests as well as team members could not resist a sigh of admiration in front of this real piece of art. The concept was to have the tree made of used wooden materials and all the side decorative materials came from the garden. The gold colour of the entire setting added to its festive mood. The team worked tirelessly during days to finish the job on time for Christmas.

ON THE PLATEFood was a complete success at the Christmas Eve & Christmas Day Buffets as well as on New Year’s Eve. All the guests were delighted and congratulated the team for the wonderful set-up, decoration and quality of food. Team members lived up to the challenges and were all involved in the kitchen starting from the stewards to cooks and the sous-chefs. The concept of these evenings was ‘Cook-the-food-live’. This was the main attraction or rather the animation of these special nights. The display was greatly improved by the lighting effects, which made the food on offer really attractive. As for the food itself, it reached the highest levels with a variety of high-profile products prepared with the best ingredients.

SERVICE WITH JOYThe restaurant team prepared these end-of-the-year events weeks before. The planning of the table setting, the service plan, the welcome and service to the guests was all well done one week before the events. Musical bands were briefed a few days before and the restaurant decorations had a final touch. The guests were very pleasantly surprised when they entered the restaurant and, on New Year’s Eve, the team members wore their best dress instead of the traditional uniforms. This added to the celebration in a family atmosphere.

Welcoming SantaCelebrating a year’s work

Santa arrived by boat in the morning of Christmas Day to meet all the children at the resort. He arrived by boat from Mahé Gateway and made his way on a club car

to the Mini Club. About thirty children residing at the resort with their parents joined the party where gifts were distributed to everyone present. A lunch was organised at the Mini Club and the children shared the fellowship of Christmas with joy and happiness.

Team members happily gathered at the Ptit Piman Restaurant during the end-of-the-year period to enjoy their traditional staff party. Norbert Couvreur and many

Heads of Department gathered to share their happiness. He expressed his warmest thanks to everyone present for their dedicated and hard work. He also announced some changes in the overall management and operational structure, a decision he said, aimed at increasing the resort’s output. The gathering was marked by the drawing of lots for the popular tombola and the winners joyfully collected their prizes.

Nirajen Ghale, from the Kitchen, won the Star Prize of two return tickets to Mauritius plus a three-night stay in a Beachcomber Group hotel. Arop Biong, of the Maintenance Department, received one return ticket to Mauritius.

Patricia René, who works in Public Area, won a prize for a one-night stay for two persons

on full board at North Island Resort whereas Madeleine Michel, from Room Service, received a week-end for two persons at Deroches Island Resort and finally, Helene Philoe, the hotel nurse, won a weekend for two persons at Domaine de L’Orangerie.

The Hawksbill turtle is a globally threatened species classified as ‘critically endangered’. Its laying season in Seychelles runs from late September to early March. This season, almost daily patrols on Sainte

Anne Island beaches started in mid-October 2015 to monitor these marine turtles. These have been conducted by volunteer student Louis McLeod, from SupAgro Montpellier (France), currently doing an internship with the resort in collaboration with Seychelles National Parks Authority (SNPA) under the supervision of Dr Jeanne Mortimer, conservation biologist and marine turtle expert, and Dr Gérard Rocamora, the resort’s conservation biologist and environmental adviser.

«As at 22nd January 2015, that is fourteen weeks into the study, a total of 520 Hawksbill turtle-nesting emergences (tracks) have been recorded. The numbers of turtles nesting peaked in November and early December. No tracks of green turtles were observed.» McLeod reported to INSIGHT. «The beaches where the highest number of nesting emergences has been recorded are Grand Anse (172), Grand Manon (159) and Petit Manon (101).»

A total of 110 turtle encounters were recorded (sometimes involving the same turtle more than once). Twenty-two of the animals were tagged, including nine that were tagged this season by SupAgro volunteer student Louis McLeod.

«Unfortunately, as was the case last season (2013-2014) and despite the beach patrols at high tide and the SNPA patrols at sea, there were several poaching incidents whereby three (possibly four) turtles were captured on the beach by unidentified persons coming in small boats. Poaching of nesting females has the potential to destroy this major ecotourism attraction at Sainte Anne Marine Park, as it has on most beaches of Mahé», Dr Mortimer said. «To date, 157 hotel guests have participated in the turtle patrols conducted by Louis and additional clients have been led on walks on Sainte Anne Island beaches by the hotel guides.»

Turtle eggs take two months to hatch after they are laid. So, January, February and March are the peak only months

during which visitors have a chance to see baby turtles emerging from their nests. «Most of them do so at night. Only a few baby turtles out of a thousand survive to adulthood; this is mostly because they take 30 to 40 years to become adults. Females lay every 2 or 3 years and do so 3 or 4 times during the laying season. They lay an average of about 160 eggs per clutch. We estimate that approximately 70 to 90 individual female hawksbills nest at Sainte Anne each year», Dr Rocamora stated.

Posters are fixed at the resort to invite visitors who want to participate in these patrols. The ones who had done so came back with a sense of emotion and told the team members that they felt how fragile these creatures were and that they were happy to participate in a minute way to protect them.

New club cars

Prompting visitors to protect turtles

A brand new batch of club cars joined the fleet at the resort a few weeks ago. This additional facility will

improve the service to guests quite significantly. «It is definitely a big plus to the service of our guests», Govind Anasamy, the Executive Assistant Manager, told INSIGHT. «A brand new club car is always an asset and is an important tool for our operations. They should be very helpful to us to attend

guest requests at the earliest and avoid any waiting. They will be even more useful when we have many arrivals at one go such as groups, eductours and when we are running at full occupancy.»

5 new club cars are now in service, 3 four-seaters and 2 five-seaters. The four-seaters are mainly for rental to guests whereas the six-seaters will join the existing fleet of club cars to shuttle guests.

Welcoming a new aircraft

First 2015 guest !

Air Seychelles celebrated a historic occasion as its first Airbus A320 touched down at Seychelles International Airport last November.

The aircraft is named “Amirantes” in honour of the group of coral islands discovered in the Seychelles archipelago in the16th century. The aircraft was welcomed by a traditional water cannon salute after landing. The new Airbus A320 is currently being used on three new routes, namely Mumbai, Dar-es-Salaam and Antananarivo. The aircraft has a two-cabin configuration comprising 16 seats in Business Class and 120 seats in Economy Class.

An unexpected but most welcome arrival on the first day of the year at the resort! Very early, the first guest of the year made its way into

the Takamaka Restaurant area and made it a point to stay comfortably in the sand. This most valuable guest later realized that it had not done any booking and left the resort very discreetly into the sea…
