It fits nicely inside a spongy, warm burrito, until it quickly seeps through onto the tips of your fingers. It mixes effortlessly with the meat or chicken inside a hard-shell taco, one that serves as a dip for the freshly picked vegetable platter in the middle of the dining room table. On the surface, salsa is simply a thrown-together combination of tomato sauce, peppers, onions, and seasoning, a straightforward Mexican staple of mere spiciness. However, when looked at through a closer lens, salsa represents cultural adaptability, and has diversified into a food product enjoyed by citizens across the globe. Together, let us embark on a journey through both time and space, one that takes us back to the very start of salsa’s existence, and transports us to countries throughout the world. All aboard!
