We are not helpless after all

A political drama was staged last week within the

Labor Party where a senior Parliamentary member

successfully invoked a leadership challenge but

then Kevin Rudd declined to be a challenger at the

end. Hence, Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Deputy

Prime Minister Wayne Swan have automatically

returned as leader and deputy leader of the ALP

respectively after a caucus ballot. While this ALP

leadership crisis has ceased, a number of Kevin

Rudd s supporters including several ministers

have been side-lined resulting in a further weaken

ALP government undoubtedly with a negative

impact on its re-election campaign coming up till

September this year.

Australian politics has not been seen as serious

for long; yet this demonstrates how public opinion

in a democratic society could affect politics, to

the extent that politicians used to flip flop in the

expenses of administrative efficiency. On the

other end in Hong Kong, apparently the Chinese

government is not interested in genuine universal

suffrage, when it comes to the 2017 re-election,

by building in various constitutional devices to

shortlist preferred candidates. Hong Kong people

are feeling a bit helpless to see the One Country,

Two System agreed in the Sino-British Joint

Declaration not truly implemented. Many of my

friends simply sigh as Hong Kong s identity and

status change upon thetransfer of sovereignty back

to China since 1997.

It is inevitable that no matter whoever living around

the world is still subject to impact of politics. Still

the world is not subject to human control as our

Creator is the One in command. So despite the

volatility and instability of politics, we are not

helpless after all.

During helpless moments, we must have faith that

our perseverance and untiring aspiration will lead us

to a better future. I hope all of us, no matter in Hong

Kong or Australia, are courageous enough to walk

through these difficult and helpless days.
