Welcome to the world of “Z”. The future is a dark one as the dead have risen to feast upon the living. In “Z” players fi eld forces of either zombies or humans as mankind wages a desperate struggle to survive in an unknown world. Cities have been shattered, neighborhoods torn apart, and humanity is hanging on by a thread. Pockets of what can be loosely called “civilization” exist around the globe, but no formal governments stand ready to protect its people. Some elements of world armies still exist but there are simply too many of the enemy to mount an effective counter-attack on a large scale. This enemy has no motive other than to feed. There are no objectives for them to seize and hold; no supply lines are needed to keep them fi ghting. The worst part- their numbers are without end. For each zombie put down, two more seem to spring up in its place. Most humans that fall to these monsters rise again as one of them; their single purpose being to kill.

Despite this tragic past and equally tragic future, some people stand in defi ance of the horde. Be they brave, resigned, or mad, these “soldiers” take to the streets to cut down the enemy. In the pockets of civilization still remaining, armies have formed. Some are elements of government forces equipped with modern fi ghting technology and some are local militias wielding everything from axes to baseball bats, shotguns to replica swords. There have even been rumors of Church communities and convicts banding together to fortify their makeshift homes and fi ght back the dark plague that threatens to engulf the land. The struggle to survive looks to ultimately be a lost cause, but some will not give up the hope for a return to the “Pre-Z” days before the Outbreak.

Apocalypse-Z is a “world setting” supplement for Battlefi eld Evolution™ by Mongoose Publishing and you’ll need a copy of those rules to gain full use of this book. You will also need some six-sided and ten-sided dice, as well as a tape measure. “Z”, being a tabletop wargame, begs the use of miniature soldiers. There are a large number of miniature fi gure manufacturers out there, some with really amazing zombies. Check out the section on Miniatures and Terrain for model manufacturers and some terrain making tips.

While the armies and units in “Z” are designed to be playable in a ‘stand-alone’ format, there’s absolutely nothing stopping you from playing against other

armies in any Battlefi eld Evolution rule set or expansion. You can check the New Rules and Traits section for special rules when using other forces against the units presented in this book. This initial supplement details the human group known as the Enclave as well as the Zombie Horde. Future supplements will introduce new factions as well as new units for existing factions.

One of the main reasons we all play tabletop miniature wargames if for FUN! Let’s face it; unless you’re playing in a high-stakes tournament with loads of prizes on the line, none of us are playing for the greenbacks. Remember to have fun and be a sport. Just because the zombie abomination you’re fi elding wants to rip the head off of its adversaries and feast on their brains, doesn’t mean you really have to do the same to your opponent (unless, of course, he’s got really juicy braaaiiinnsssss). Should a disagreement ever arise that you cannot quickly remedy by thumbing through this or one of the main Battlefi eld Evolution rulebooks, simply expedite the process and each player choose either even or odds. Then roll a six-sided die. Whichever number is rolled determines which player’s interpretation of the rules wins the day. Once you’ve got this settled, you can keep on playing. You can always go back for a more in-depth read of the rules after the game is over. If you still can’t fi nd the answer there, check the Exploding Goat Games website for clarifi cation; we really do love the company, honest. Remember, as always-Good Gaming!

Jenkins stepped over the bisected corpse of what once must have been a janitor as he made his way farther into the bowels of the derelict research facility. “Damn, Sarge, the stench in this place is unbearable”. Jenkins slowly traversed the room keeping his MP5N trained on the unknown area ahead. His team of Navy SEALS was tasked to determine what occurred at the massive high-tech facility. It had gone largely offl ine two days prior and all electronic and phone communications with the outside world had been cut. The team was dispatched after a bleeding and rambling laboratory technician staggered out of the building and into the street. He had been picked up by the local sheriff and transported to a nearby hospital. Several attempts had been made to question him, but he was bordering on insanity and his incoherent ramblings only gave vague details of some form of attack. The local police SWAT team held a perimeter while the Secretary of Defense had been notifi ed. Due to the classifi ed nature of some of the Pentagon research projects being conducted at Silver Spring, it would not do to have civilians inside. The fi rst group of Force Recon Marines, sent in that same day, never came out.

“Keep your mind on the mission Jenkins…” he heard over his Objective Force Warrior communications system embedded in his helmet, “and quit bellyaching abo…aaaarrrhhh”. As the transmission cut out he heard the crack of gunfi re from behind. Jenkins spun around and saw the muzzle fl ash of his comrade’s

fi rearm and a blur or motion. Jenkins started in that direction when he caught, out of the very corner of his peripheral vision, motion. He again

spun and had moments to glimpse his attacker before he was borne to the ground by a leaden weight.

When he hit, the air was momentarily blasted from his body and he felt a wrenching feeling in his shoulder. Fighting through the pain with clenched teeth he turned his head and, in horror, saw his attacker. A man, or what was once a man, loomed over him with its ragged mouth agape. Jenkins could not believe his eyes when he saw that the man, dressed in the tattered and bloody remnants of a three piece suit, had only one arm. The other ended in a bloody, putrefi ed stump just under the elbow. Large chunks of fl esh appeared to have been torn from his body and much of his rib cage exposed, revealing the dripping organs inside. One eye socket was empty and a crack in the man’s skull ran from the bridge of his nose and over the top of his head. ‘This man should be down…’ thought Jenkins, ‘what is this?!?’

Jenkins brought to bear his rifl e and squeezed the trigger. Through the muzzle fl ash, Jenkins saw the rounds strike home in a gout of blood. The beast staggered briefl y, but returned its onslaught. ’JESUS’ panicked Jensen as he began to push himself backwards along the fl oor. He let out a scream as he squeezed the trigger a second time. This time, the magazine emptied and he began to fumble in the pouch of his assault vest for a replacement. As he dropped the spent magazine to the fl oor, the man half-fell, half-leapt upon him. Jenkins, pinned to the ground, tried desperately to reach for the combat knife strapped to his thigh. As he did this, he felt another attacker grab his leg and a searing pain shot up to his hip. He screamed as the man on top of him opened his mouth and lunged towards his neck. He kicked frantically at the unseen attacker on his leg as a cold numbness spread up towards his knee. The SEAL felt the helmet ripped from his head and several teeth broke as the chinstrap slammed his jaw shut before it snapped in half. Jenkins saw fl ashes of white burst in his eyes as his BDUs were clawed to pieces. He let out the scream of a trapped animal as his fi rst attacker dug its teeth into the soft fl esh of his neck. He saw, through fading vision, his lifeblood spatter across his attacker’s face; then all was darkness.

The zombies feasted.

We here at ChronoCorp International’s Biomedical

Advancement Division have families too, and

we all have loved ones we’ve lost. Now, with our state-of-the-art

scientific advancements, we can hold on to those people that much longer.

We’re proud to introduce Denicalis™, the latest in life

extending technology. Denicalis doesn’t just delay the harsh effects

of aging, it REVERSES them! We’ve been able to alter, at the genetic level, a cell’s need for

certain proteins without which, normal cells age and die.

Denicalis stops human cells from needing those proteins and allows them to continue to grow and

regenerate.

Denicalis has wide-reaching medical applications from gerentolgy, traumatic injury rehabilitation,

degenerative mental disorders, and more.

Denicalis has uses in the public health, governmental, private sector, and military industries.

Already, the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff have ordered full battlefield testing. If Denicalis is good enough for our brave fighting men and women, its good enough

for Grandma!

NEWADVANCED RULES

& TRAITS

6

The world setting of Apocalypse-Z begins a few years after much of the world’s population has been turned into zombies after a virus, designed to extend human life expectancy, actually kept dead people regenerating and motive. After “The Outbreak”, as it has come to be known, pockets of humans struggle to survive against the never ending Zombie Horde. Most humans have banded together into groups for protection. These groups generally have a base of operations from which they defend against zombies as well as other human factions. With the loss of most of society’s infrastructure, resources are very limited and jealously guarded. To represent the relative paucity of resources and to capture the fl avor of the zombie genre, there are a few new advanced rules we’ve implemented.

New Advanced Rules

Broken MilitariesAny Battlefi eld Evolution™ Modern Force list can be used with Apocalypse Z with only a few minor changes. The cost of all vehicles is increased by 50% and the cost of all aircraft is increased by 100%. This represents both the rarity of vehicles and aircraft in this world setting as well as the diffi culty keeping vehicles and aircraft fueled and maintained.

Aim for the HeadThe human survivors have learned that the best way to take down a zombie fast is to aim for the head. To represent this ability any living model or unit may take a ready action to aim any weapon that does a single die of damage and does not have the Lethal Zone or Flame Traits. During the model/unit’s next shoot action add

+1 to their attack. Any weapon with the Auto trait loses the Auto trait for this shoot

action.

The LivingSince the core of this game involves zombies, a form of “undead” creature, there is a need to specify certain weapons, traits, and effects that only harm or benefi t the zombies. The Traits section adds the Undead trait, but, just to eliminate any controversy or questions later, any human model is to be considered “living”. Rather than give attributes of the “living”, just take it at face value that if it effects the undead, your US Marines or Enclave Watchers are safe. Trust us, you’ll know the undead when you smell them!
