UTSA’s East Asia Ins.tute hosted the 5 th annual Kimchi Fes.val on Saturday, April 15, 2017 in the University Center Retama Auditorium and Galleria at UTSA’s main campus. Celebra.ng Korea and its culture, this event was held in collabora.on with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Houston, Houston Korean Educa.on Center, San Antonio Korean American Associa.on (SAKAA), Korean American Cultural Center of San Antonio (KACCSA), San Antonio Joong Ang Dance Group, and UTSA’s Korean Culture Club. More than 300 people in total aRended this much an.cipated event on a beau.ful Saturday aSernoon. The fes.vi.es began at 2:00 P.M. and guests were invited to visit cultural and educa.onal booths through games, art, craS ac.vi.es, and short presenta.ons. Many were aRracted to the craS booths where they made Korean flags while learning the meaning of the yin-yang and line symbols in the flag that represent Other people par.cipated in Korean paper folding to make hanbok (Korean tradi.onal clothes). There was also hanbok wearing, where guests were able to try on the colorful tradi.onal Korean clothing. Other popular aRrac.ons included yut (four-s.ck game), the Korean trivia game, and informa.onal booths on the Korean language classes and English teaching opportuni.es in Korea. helpedvolunteeratthefes.val.Oncetheopeningremarkswereconcluded,CodySmith,aUTSAKoreanlanguagestudenttookastageastheMCoftheeventwhointroducedupcomingKoreanperformancesandpresenta.ons.

TheKACCSAYouthDanceperformedO-go-mu:5standingdrumdance,Onara:TaegukFanDance,andJang-go-chum:hourglassdrumdance.Othertradi.onaldancesincludingtheKoreanFandance,SymbolDance,and4-drumNantawhichisablendofintricaterhythmandmovementperformedbytheSanAntonioJoongAngDance Group.

TherewerealsoelectrifyingK-popdancesperformedbyKACCSAandUTSAKoreanCultureClubwhodancedtotheKoreanpopmusicwithsynchronizeddancesteps.
