The only bad thing about Pinbacks new record (out October 16 on Temporary

Residence Ltd.) is that we had to wait five years for it. But man, was it worth the wait.

From the first notes of the first single, Proceed to Memorythe recognizably hyp-

notic rocking-chair staccato of Zach Smiths bass; the low, slow burn of Rob Crows

gentle voxits clear Information Retrievedis unmistakably a Pinback record, yet

throughout the albums 10 tracks, familiarity rarely bleeds into been-there boredom.

The mood ranges from minor-key introspective to big and anthemic to slightly

funky, with soaring melodies and lockstep rhythms melding with lilting piano and

samples of some faraway radio broadcast. On one standout track, Diminished, the

lyrics ask, Should it be so hard to have a nice day? With this album on repeat, that
