Welcome to the San Francisco Center for the Book’s Autumn 2012 Catalog. In this catalog you will find highlights from our upcoming season of book arts programming: workshops, public events, and exhibitions.

Students new and returning, we encourage you to sign up today to ensure your spot in our core curriculum workshops to experience hands-on the joys of traditional letterpress printing and bookbinding. Don’t miss the veritable wave of new techniques and methods being offered in the related arts program – creative extensions to accompany the core book-binding and letterpress crafts.

Our biggest and most exciting event of the year, Roadworks: A Steam-roller Printing Festival, will be held on Saturday, September 22nd from 12pm–5pm. For the ninth year running, we bring you the original steamroller printing event: using a three-ton construction steamroller and an unlikely letterpress bed —Rhode Island Street — a team of artists and printers create large-scale prints from three-foot-square hand-carved linoleum blocks. Plus, we celebrate our longest-standing Roadworks art-ist participant Rik Olson with a retrospective of his work in the Austin/Burch Gallery: Rik in Detail: A Celebration of the Work of Printmaker Rik Olson.

Finally, we announce some big news! In December 2012, SFCB will move to a new facility located at 375 Rhode Island, right around the corner from our current location. The new building will provide a modern, open floor plan with nearly twice the space for more classrooms, improved exhibition space, and possibilities for growth. As we enter our 16th year as the premier book arts center on the west coast, our new building rep-resents our commitment to a growing role in the book arts community both in San Francisco and nationally. We look forward to hosting all our community members in the new space in 2013.

Join us as we practice, celebrate, and innovate the fine arts of letterpress printing and hand bookbinding this autumn! Not on our mailing list? Sign up at sfcb.org to receive invitations and announcements.

Using a three-ton construction steam-roller and an unlikely letterpress bed — Rhode Island Street — a team of artists and printers print large-scale prints from three-foot-square hand-carved linoleum blocks. Now in its 9th year, Roadworks has become a casual, popular tradition in the Potrero Hill neighborhood, drawing print-making and book art enthusiasts as well as locals and families. Events for all ages will be scheduled throughout the day. Free tours of the Austin/Burch Gallery, plus free letterpress, bookbinding, and other mini-work-shops will be offered at SFCB during the festival. The gallery-quality steamroller prints will be for sale at SFCB during a special preview event prior to the event; limited quantities of the prints will be available at the event itself. Details on print sales and featured artists will be available on our website at sfcb.org/events/roadworks. The steamroller prints are highly limited editions, so if you are interested in the work of a specific featured artist, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] with inquiries.

Exhibitions in the Austin/Burch Gallery

Rik in Detail: A Celebration of the Work of Printmaker Rik Olson Monday/ September 10 – Saturday/ October 20, 2012We are proud to host an exhibition focused on the work of renowned printmaker Rik Olson, who has built a career focused on wood engraving, scratchboard, pen and ink, etching, linocuts and, in his words, “about anything that includes sharp instruments and a dab of ink.”

At SFCB, he is the sole artist to have participated in nine Roadworks fes-tivals (including this year’s), and contributed its iconic image at the very first Roadworks in 2003. A California native, Rik received his B.F.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. He has studied under such masters as Barry Moser, John DePol, Richard McLean, and Ralph Borge. He has lived, studied, and exhibited in Italy, Germany and the U.S. His influences include the years he lived in Europe and now the beautiful countryside of Sonoma County, California.

Please visit sfcb.org/exhibitions for updates on events celebrating this exhibition.

Paolo Salvagione: 2012 Imprint Artist in Residence Friday/ November 2 – Saturday/ December 15, 2012For our final exhibition of 2012, we feature work by our Imprint Artist in Residence Paolo Salvagione. We will highlight the work he created while in residence here at SFCB, as well as work from his archive to broaden our audience’s understanding of his process and piece for his residency.
