EFFECT: Jay has someone select a card and return it to the deck. He illustrates the magical properties of a pencil by having a participant wave it over the deck, causing the selection to vanish from the deck and re-appear inside an envelope that has been on the table throughout the routine.

“But the most magical property of a pencil is its ability to erase,” Jay says. He then visibly erases the flap and seams from the envelope, leaving just a piece of paper in its place.

REQUIRED: A pay envelope that is bigger than a playing card, a large paperclip, a pencil with an eraser on the end, and a deck of cards with a duplicate card (say, Two of Spades).

PROP CONSTRUCTION: Cut the flap from the envelope and then tape it to the top of the duplicate Two of Spades. It should be affixed with the tape at the back of the card (photo 1). You may need to trim the flap a little to make it fit.

Cut out the front side of the envelope (the side without a seam) and discard the rest. This leaves you with a plain piece of paper. Hold up the card to the piece of paper and trim the paper so that it’s just a few millimeters wider and at least half an inch higher than the card (photo 2). Remove the card and then use the

pencil to lightly draw a fake flap on one end of the paper. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but does help sell the effect.

front of the paper. Slip the paperclip on top to hold everything in place and your gimmick is complete.

SETUP: Start with the envelope in view and the pencil in your pocket. The unprepared Two of Spades should be in a position in the deck to be forced (such as on top).

METHOD: Force the Two of Spades using whatever method you desire (a suitable force is the riffle force, page 48). Apparently lose the selection into the deck, really controlling it to the top.

Palm the top card and then reach into your pocket, leave the palmed card there, and come out with just the pencil. Explain, “A pencil can make a perfect magic wand. For example, it can make things appear, and of course, erase things and make them disappear.” Hand the pencil to the participant and have her wave it over the deck to apparently make her card disappear.

Place the deck on the table and then pick up the envelope gimmick, holding it in your right

hand with the thumb at the back and the fingers at the front. Remove the paperclip and place it on the table. Open the fake flap by pulling it all the way behind the card and hold it to the back of the card with your thumb as you pretend to pull the card from the envelope. Jay finds that it helps if you pucker the envelope a little by pushing with the thumb from behind, as this gives it a little more dimension instead of looking like just a sheet of paper.

After the participant has confirmed that the card is her selection, slip it into your pocket. Place the envelope down on the table (the side with the drawn-on flap facing upward) and take the pencil from the participant. You can now bring attention down to the envelope as you start to erase the flap from the envelope, apparently making the flap completely vanish.

The best way to illustrate the weird illusion is to pick up the piece of paper, tear it in half and hand the pieces out to two spectators, to show what the envelope has become.

TRAVELING EXPENSESDifficulty: yyyuu

EFFECT: A borrowed bill is punched with four holes, one in each corner. Jay presents a challenge: how can you get all four holes in one corner? After a moment, he illustrates the way it can be done: by folding the bill so the corners are aligned.

Offering a more magical solution, Jay unfolds the bill, and now all four holes are punched in one corner.

REQUIRED: Two bills, a hole punch, and a thumbtip.

SETUP: Begin with a bill that has four holes punched in the same corner (photo 1). Fold this and place it inside your thumbtip. Have a hole punch at the ready.

PERFORMANCE: Borrow a bill and invite a spectator to punch a hole in each corner (photo 2). Say, “What is the difference between a puzzle and a trick? I’ll show you.” Now pose the following riddle: “How can all four holes be in the same corner?”

To illustrate the solution, take the bill and execute the bill switch. As you fold it, the answer is apparent: by folding the bill into quarters, all four corners are aligned. “But that’s a puzzle. This is magic.” Unfold the bill to reveal that now all four holes really are in the same corner.

EFFECT: Jay takes a selected card and tears it into several pieces. He asks someone to write their initial on one of the pieces and then drops the torn pieces into the card box. “My fingers are so sensitive that I can find your initialed piece within the card box,” he says. True to his word, he quickly thrusts his fingers into the box and pulls out the initialed piece. “It was easy though,” he says. He then pulls out the only other thing in the card box: a restored card, with a section missing that perfectly matches the initialed piece.

REQUIRED: A deck of cards, a matching duplicate card (say, the Six of Clubs) and a marker pen. PROP CONSTRUCTION: Take the duplicate Six, bend it in half and tear out the middle of the card (photo 1). Put the torn-out piece to one side and then roughly crease the card in a few places to give the appearance that it has been restored from various pieces.

SETUP: Place the torn card in the card case with the deck. The unharmed Six of Clubs should be on top of the deck.

Have the torn piece palmed in your left hand.

The marker pen should start in your left trouser pocket, where it will provide a reason for you to ditch the torn cards later in the routine.

PERFORMANCE: Bring out the deck of cards, leaving the torn Six of Clubs inside the box. Place the deck in left-hand dealing grip, covering the small piece of card that you’re palming.

Force the top card of the deck (Jay uses the Hofzinser spread force as it naturally hides the palmed piece, see page 43) and then place the cards on the table. Take the Six of Clubs face up in your left hand and place it on top of the palmed torn piece.

Sometimes Sankey will alter the structure of an effect, and in retooling it, a different experience is achieved. In this demonstration, the Torn and Restored element becomes the surprise climax of a card trick. We love how altering the premise affords the element of surprise, an emotion rarely experienced in the Torn and Restored plot.

Readjust the Six, gripping the torn piece against the back of the card with the left thumb (photo 2). Tear the card into thirds lengthways and then into thirds widthwise, always placing the torn-off pieces to the front of the packet so that the backmost piece is the secret piece that you prepared earlier. Appear to give a random piece of the torn card to the participant, but really hand him the prepared piece from the back of the pile.

Transfer the pieces to the right hand and then pick up the card box and hold it in left-hand

dealing grip with the flap at the top and the opening at the inner end (photo 3). Pretend to insert the pieces into the box, but really allow them to fall underneath the box into your left palm. Pick up the box with the right hand (leaving the torn-up card hidden in your hand) and immediately reach into your left pocket.

Drop the torn pieces and remove the pen from your pocket. Your focus should be on the card box during these actions to avoid flashing the pieces that you have hidden in your left hand.Hand the marker pen to your participant and ask him to initial his torn piece. As he’s doing this, regrip the case in your left hand with your thumb at the back and the fingers at the front. The opening of the box should be at the top, with thumb notch side of the box facing toward you (photo 4).

Pick up the participant’s piece and pretend to drop the signed piece into the card box, but really allow it to drop behind, gripping it with the left thumb (photo 5).

Give the box a little shake and explain that you have enough sensitivity in your fingers to reach into the box and find the initialed piece. To remove the piece, dip your right fingers into the box, allowing the thumb to move down behind the box and drag the initialed piece up, acting as if you’re plucking it from inside the box (photo 6, from behind).

Explain that finding the initialed piece was pretty easy because you magically made all the other pieces come together. Slowly pull the card out of the box and show that the missing section in the middle of the card perfectly matches the initialed piece. The restoration is complete.

DESTROYING CARDSJay has probably destroyed more playing cards than any other magician alive. Besides the United States Playing Card Company, another party benefits from this destruction: his audience. Jay believes that every time he tears a card in front of an audience, they sit up and take notice. In his experience, destroying a card just for them makes the situation special and permanent.

COLLECTOR’S ITEM

EFFECT: Jay has a borrowed coin marked by its owner. He then vanishes the coin and reproduces it inside a sealed coin holder (photo 1), which has been inside an envelope that has been in view the entire time.

REQUIRED: A coin sleeve (photo 1) big enough to hold a quarter (search for “Fold & Staple Coin Holder” to find these on the internet), a pay envelope and a marker pen.

SETUP: Fold and staple the coin sleeve (photo 1) and then cut a small slit through one layer of the plastic.

Place the prepared sleeve inside the envelope with the slit side facing outward (i.e. away from the flap) and upward.

PERFORMANCE: Place the envelope on the table, flap side facing upward. Have a quarter borrowed and initialled on one side. Make the coin disappear using any technique that you’d like. Jay uses his corkscrew vanish (page 912), ending with the coin in Tenkai pinch.

Pick up the envelope with your left hand and lay it on your right fingers. Reach under the right hand with your left fingers, drop the Tenkai-pinched coin onto the left fingers and then push it up onto the bottom of the envelope (photo 2). If you use a different vanish, you must ensure that the marking on the coin is facing the floor at this point in the routine.

the coin up against the underside of the sleeve with your right fingers. The end result is that the coin ends up under the sleeve but appears to the audience to be inside it (photo 4). Drop the envelope onto the table. This technique is similar to the classic Ed Marlo and Matt Schulien card box load that we’ve explored several times in this trilogy.

At this point the marking on the coin is facing downward. This provide motivation as to why

you remove the coin from the sleeve instead of leaving it sealed inside. Say, “You don’t seem to believe me that this is your coin. I’ll show you...” Push the coin upward, causing it to bust through the slit in the sleeve (photo 5), and then slowly turn the coin over to show the mark (photo 6). Hand your participant the coin and the sleeve and allow her to examine everything!

EFFECT: Jay asks his participant to close her hand into a fist. He takes out some pool chalk, rubs it on his index finger and asks the participant to open her hand. She finds pool chalk all over her palm!

REQUIRED: Some pool chalk.

SETUP: Have the chalk in your right jacket pocket.

PERFORMANCE: Before you start the performance, subtly put your right hand in your pocket and apply some chalk to the tip of your index finger.

Ask your participant to hold out both hands, palm down and then take both her hands in yours, with your thumb on top and fingers below. Say, “Please hold them farther apart,” and assist in widening the gap between her hands. As you do so, rub your right index finger into her left palm to transfer some chalk from your finger.

Ask that she close her hands into a fist and state that you’ll use her hands as the pockets on a pool table. As an afterthought, say, “Actually, let’s just use one pocket; please raise one of your hands.” This is simply the magicians choice force and whichever hand she raises, follow up by saying, “Great, we’ll just use your left hand for this.”

Remove the chalk from your pocket and openly twist your right index finger into the chalk. Continue, “Obviously I can’t actually shoot a pool ball into your hand, but I can do something more interesting. Instead I’m going to shoot thousands of particles into your hand; namely this chalk.” Thrust your index finger toward the participant as if you are taking a shot. Take a step back and ask your participant to open her hand. She’ll find pool chalk dust all over her palm!

This has become a popular trick of Jay’s for the simple reason that it’s an update of a classic: ashes on palm. If you find yourself in a billiard room or performing in an environment with pool tables nearby, this is a bewildering piece to use.

MEASLES

EFFECT: An “infected” playing card is displayed, and Jay explains that this card has measles as he displays black spots all over the back of the card. He demonstrates the contagious nature of the cards by rubbing the infected card on uninfected cards, causing the measles to appear on every card he comes in contact with. At the end, every card in the pack is shown with measles.

PROP CONSTRUCTION: You will need a deck of cards and a double-backed card that matches the backs you are using. For “Measles,” it is advisable to use red backs as the black dots will contrast better with a lighter color. To prepare, draw circular black dots on the back of each card in the pack (photo 1). When you spread the pack at the end, the impact of all the dots showing in a spread is quite visually disarming (photo 2). Draw dots on one side of the double-backed card and leave the other side undisturbed.

SETUP: Place one card with “measles” in your breast pocket and place the double-backer on top with the normal side uppermost.

Since the effect is a closer and affects the

backs of every card, the best way to get into the effect is with a deck switch.

PERFORMANCE: “Believe it or not, playing cards, just like humans, can catch diseases. To give

you an example, here is a card infected with measles.” Take the isolated card from your breast pocket and display its back. As you do, secretly obtain a break beneath the top card of the deck.

“If I touch this card to an uninfected card, watch what happens.” So saying, display the back of the measles card in your right hand by holding it in end grip and tipping your right hand palm up slightly. Hold your hand next to the deck so that the spectators can see the contrast between the top, normal card and the measles card (photo 3).

Place the measles card in your right hand on top of the deck, immediately picking up the card above the break. Rub your hands together for a moment, and then lift the top two cards, as one, and rotate the right hand palm up to once again display the measles on the back of the card in your right hand. But this time, measles will show on both back surfaces (photo 4).

Turn your right hand back palm down and replace the double on top of the pack, injogged for half its length (photo 5). Contact the top card of the deck (beneath the double) with your right finger pads and push this card forward as you push the double square on top of the deck (photo 6). This is the Henry Christ alignment move. Release your grip of the double and swivel the outjogged measles card from the deck and drop it on the table.

Now deal off the top, face-up card and display both sides. The top card of the deck shows normal, as it should. You have successfully infected one card.

Repeat this process to infect two more cards, visually rubbing the measles card against the

top card of the deck, causing it, too, to get the measles. After each change, swivel out the infected card and deal it onto the tabled pile.

infect three more using a different method. Turn the top face-up card face down and deal it on top of the tabled pile. Explain that you can rub the measles cards with your right fingers and transfer it by touch to an uninfected card. So saying, rub your right fingers on the tabled pile, and then execute the Erdnase color change to cause the top card of the deck to become infected. Deal this card onto the pile and repeat twice more, causing more cards to become infected.

To finish, execute a double turnover, but turn your wrist toward your body as you turn the double face up to prevent exposing the measles card beneath the cards you are turning over. Once the double is face up and square

on top of the deck, deal the top card into your right hand, again performing a wrist kill with the left hand to prevent exposing the dots on the back of the top card of the deck.

“Cards can even catch the measles long distance.” Wave the face-up card in your right hand over the tabled pile and then turn the card face down to show that it now has the measles. Then wave the deck over the pile and spread the cards face down. Every single card has become infected (photo 7).
