The environmental movement in the United States has histori-cally been anti-city. Change is afoot, however, as cities across the globe, including many American ones, are taking aggres-sive measures to reduce their carbon contribution to climate

change. If one breaks down the city, neighborhood by neighborhood, the highest-carbon-emitting households are found in the outer suburbs, while those with the smallest footprint are smack-dab in the center of cities. This is especially true in American cities where urban sprawl is most prevalent.

A recent Environmental Protection Agency study comparing four factors—drivable versus walkable location, traditional construction versus green building, single-family versus multifamily housing, and conventional versus hybrid automobiles—made clear that, while every factor counts, none counts nearly as much as walkability in reducing carbon output. In car-dependent areas of a city, transportation energy use consistently tops household energy use, frequently by almost two and a half times. As a result, the greenest house with a Prius in the suburbs loses out to the least green house in a walkable neighborhood. Although painful for a builder to admit, the greenest building, even though important, is overshadowed by location and transportation choices for reducing carbon impact.

Paris, France, a city with a lower-per-capita carbon footprint than any Ameri-can city, has moved rapidly to reduce its auto dependence. It has, in recent years, created 25 miles of dedicated busways, introduced 20,000 shared “city bikes” in 1,450 locations, and committed to removing 55,000 parking places from the city every year for 20 years. Since these changes are happening in an old, built-out city with support from 80 per-cent of the inhabitants, we can certainly do more to implement improvements in the walkability, biking, and public transit of our city while making car mobility less convenient and getting automobiles to own up to more of their true cost.

The number of 19-year-olds who choose not to get a driver’s license has almost tripled since the late 1970s, from 8 percent to 23 percent. The change is cultural and not economic, being basically unrelated to the recession of 2008 and fuel spikes. College-educated 25- to 34-year-olds are overwhelmingly choosing cities with vibrant urban cores defined by mixed use, greater density, excellent opportunities for connectivity, and a better balance between transportation modes (walking, biking, buses, and cars).

There is mounting evidence that dense, walkable cities generate wealth by sheer virtue of the propinquity they offer. In his 2011 New York Times op-ed “The Splendor of Cities,” David Brooks documents that as Times op-ed “The Splendor of Cities,” David Brooks documents that as Timesthe number of college graduates in a metropolitan area increases by 10 percent, individuals’ earnings increase by 7.7 percent, including those of non-college graduates.

Our national love affair with the automobile and its related experi-ment with sprawl are starting to come to an end. Quality of life seems to be the driving force, which includes both health and wealth. Although not directly related to our ecological footprint, there is a fortuitous align-ment among all these elements.

True confessions: I’m a Santa Barbara snob. My kids have even called me out on it. When I’m traveling and someone asks me where I’m from, apparently,

according to them, I sound like I’m bragging when I say I’m from Santa Barbara. I don’t think I can help it. I mean, what’s not to love and be proud of? When I refer to Santa Barbara, I generally mean the greater Santa Barbara area. Because, again, with places like Butterfly Beach in Montecito and the rolling vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley, what’s not to love? But my pro-Santa Barbara sentiment sometimes shows itself at home, as well.

My usual haunts are pretty downtown Santa Barbara centric. Although I’m a Gaucho, I’m also one of those people who has been known to refer to certain places as being “all the way out in Goleta.” So when I visited an open house recently at 321 Zink Avenue, near San Marcos High School, I have to admit that I didn’t neces-sarily expect to say “wow” about what I thought was a Goleta tract home. But say “wow” I did. Quite a few times, in fact.

I was pleasantly surprised before I even stepped foot through the front door. This three-bedroom, two-bath ranch-style home is part of a subdivision built in the early 1960s, and it sits on a big corner lot. The landscaping is strik-ing from all angles, with manicured trees plus boulders and shrubs in the front yard exuding a Dr.-Seuss-meets-bonsai flair. An octagonal brick walkway leads through an appropri-ately parched front lawn, all surrounded by a wrought-iron fence for a touch of privacy and security.

Stepping into the living room, the first “wow” escaped my lips at the huge white stone fire-place that dominates one wall. Big and bright, the living room opens onto the kitchen behind it and a huge den/dining room beyond, with a hallway off to the left that leads to the bed-rooms. I soon saw that the entire house is very bright, with white tile flooring in most rooms and large skylights throughout. The kitchen has granite countertops and a big breakfast bar that looks perfect for family gatherings or an after-

school snack. One other special feature is a large pantry and laundry room off the kitchen with a ton of extra custom-built storage space, and a brand-new washer and dryer that are included in the sale, too.

One of the coolest features in the house is a loft playroom off the back den. A staircase leads up to the treehouse-like space that offers both a bird’s-eye view and an extra-special, kid-sized secret closet. I dare any family to let their kids see that loft without hearing a “Please? Can we live here?” as a result.

From the den, large multipaned sliding-glass doors beckoned me out to explore the backyard, but first I backtracked through the rest of the house. It was as I walked into one of the bedrooms that I uttered my loudest “wow.” Through another sliding-glass door was the beautiful sight and soothing sound of a huge koi pond with a waterfall. Falling asleep to that sound every night would be magical.

Stepping out of the master bedroom onto a covered back patio, you see the pond, one of two well-tended and landscaped koi habi-tats, with a system of net coverings to protect the mature, colorful fish swimming happily around. The next “wow” came as I noticed the size of the huge avocado trees farther back in the yard, laden with their delicious treasures.

This is a bright, beautiful, open, and airy home with an enchanting backyard. The neigh-borhood is freeway-close and convenient, yet tucked away in a quiet pocket on an idyllic street. Before I left, I got my final “wow” when I learned that this location is actually Santa Barbara. So not only will the new owner get the value and features of this beautiful home, but they’ll also be able to loudly declare their own Santa Barbara pride.

ictorian architecture — referring to the reign of Queen Victoria in England (1837-1901) — was a series of revival styles derived in the mid to late 19th century in both western Europe and the United States. Within the Victorian era, the Vin both western Europe and the United States. Within the Victorian era, the VQueen Anne style emerged and became one of several popular vernaculars in

America. The distinguishing hallmarks of traditional Queen Anne residences tend to be more basic and less ornate than a traditional Victorian, with little to no fishscale sid-ing and modest design with spindles, brackets, and trim around windows and porches.

This week’s column features a simplified Queen Anne, whose origin dates to 1885, when Catherine Jenks purchased vacant land on block 127, parcel 25. Between 1886-1887, the residence was constructed with the following attributes:

“We prefer not to have a style in mind,” said Dave Mendro of his firm’s open approach to new projects. “We pride ourselves with trying to come up with the perfect solution.”

Mendro understands the diversity of design projects partially due to his work on the Montecito Board of Architectural Review. When he first arrived in Santa Barbara in 1986, he was surprised how much local design review boards oversaw new development.

However, over the years, he has come to appreciate how it has improved and pre-served the region’s architectural heritage. “Just take a drive down south to see what can happen with unfettered development,” he said.

NMA Architects is known for custom homes that range from traditional to contem-porary. They have designed more than 50 beach houses along the coast, where they used the natural strengths of individual building sites, and the clients’ lifestyles as a guide to the homes’ design.

Mendro admits that his firm’s unusual flexibility with style is not always the most efficient design practice, but it is this open-minded attitude that keeps him energized.

“We live vicariously through our clients,” he says. “They always bring some new problem to solve, so we are always learning from them.”

NMA Architects relied on these problem-solving skills while designing the QAD Headquarters in Summerland. They were asked to further the software company’s cor-porate culture by integrating design concepts that encouraged employee collaboration. Mendro’s team aimed to reduce the idea of the ego in the workplace by creating more equal space. “The focus was much more on creativity,” he says.

Mendro’s firm also takes the ideas of its own corporate culture seriously. “When the surf is up, the office might be quiet for a while,” says Mendro as he highlights their priority to offer a flexible work environment where employees can make time for their health and family.

However, personal balance isn’t the only balance they seek; they also hope to find balance between the work they do on public and private spaces. They designed the community-supported Discovery Pavilion at the Santa Barbara Zoo. “It’s fun to con-tribute in that way,” he said of the 2,300-square-foot classroom that now houses the zoo’s education program for kids and adults. Now they are working with the nonprofit Community Arts Center in Carpinteria to remodel an existing structure and design the outdoor area of an adjacent vacant lot.

Mendro hopes to continue to contribute to the community through his design work as an individual architect, and also more broadly by serving with his peers on the Mon-tecito Board of Architectural Review. He says he hopes to provide a balanced view to design review and encourage the best in regionally built environments. n

For many of us, gardens are places of sweet relief that relax worn eyes, stretch out cramped limbs, and unwind taut

brains with their color and tranquility. But gardens need water, and water, as Santa Barbarans are well aware, is an increasingly expensive and scarce resource.

Fortunately, sweet relief doesn’t have to be costly to homeowners or the environment. The city of Santa Barbara has teamed up with the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden (SBBG) to teach the public how to make a garden that is both beautiful and water-wise. Just planted this past December, the Water Wise Home Garden is now in full and glorious bloom. I took a tour of the garden with Betsy Collins, SBBG’s director of horticulture, who pointed out some top plant picks for home gardeners to grow.

Dudleya brittonii, or Dudleya for short, is a favorite of both Collins and Executive Director Steve Windhager. The plant is ele-gantly beautiful and extremely easygoing. “You just put them in the ground and ignore them,” says Windhager.

The rambunctious jelly bean yellow mon-key flower is somewhat more high-mainte-nance but has beautiful, vivacious flowers that are as much fun as its name suggests. There are many varieties of monkey flow-ers on display, such as the Fiesta marigolds, which have flaming red and orange petals, and the Eleanors, which are more demure in buttery yellow and cream white.

De la Mina verbena and hummingbird sage are two perennials that Collins loves for their beautiful flowers and hardy souls. Both require very little water, and hum-mingbird sage even plays dead in periods of

drought, lying dormant until rain rekindles it to life. Collins also recommends island snapdragon, a native of the Channel Islands, as a foundation plant for any garden.

In addition to showcasing easy-to-grow, water-wise plants, the exhibit demonstrates ways to store and make the most of rainwa-ter when it finally falls. Attached to one side of a cottage is a storm-water-collection tank that needs only 3.5 inches of rain to put away 530 gallons from a 1,200-square-foot roof. Along the opposite side of the cottage runs a dry, impermeable creek bed that channels water into a series of hilly basins hollowed into the ground. These basins pool the water and support a garden inside and along their slopes that is entirely rain-fed — in other words, a rain garden!

To Collins, the real excitement of a water-wise garden lies not just in its water savings or beauty but also in the role it serves as the foundation for a richer, more vibrant com-munity of life. Like all of the plants in the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, those in the Water Wise Home Garden are California natives, and that means they support a more diverse menu of insects, which in turn attract a wider clientele of birds, lizards, and other garden critters. Beautiful and wise in more ways than one, the water-wise garden leaves its owners, and the environment, richer than before.
