I lovingly call my little one-bedroom house a cottage. It has a compact kitchen, a bathroom with a claw-foot tub, a living room, a dining

room, and a bedroom. It has a porch in the front and a little fenced yard in the back. It’s not a “tiny house” by any means, but it is cozy.

Any time that it feels too cozy, I head to the beach. Truth be told, I get to the beach almost every day. The surf and

sand is our beautiful backyard, and it’s one of my favorite aspects of liv-ing here. I guess the only thing that might be even better was if my little cottage were actually at the beach. I’m not complaining by any means, but if I could ditch the car and just walk to the beach, life might be even more perfect. With that fantasy in mind, I recently visited a couple of cottages for sale in particularly prime beach locations.

The house at 1366 Danielson Road is technically a condo but exudes more cottage-like charm than almost any home on the market. First off, it is the most discreet open house I’ve ever visited. Only one sign pointed visitors into an enchanting enclave of four

small houses with a lovely garden in the center. Through an arched trellis in the back corner sits this two-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath cottage.

At more than 1,100 square feet, it is cozy but comfortable. I’m told that the current owners raised their fam-ily here, and walking through this home, I can believe it. In addition to the pretty shared landscaping in front, it has a private fenced backyard

with a hot tub. The living room greets visitors with its vaulted open-beam ceilings and a lovely fireplace. Other surprises include a walk-in closet in the master bedroom, a separate laundry room, and the unexpected bonus of air conditioning.

One of the main attrac-tions is the location. This home sits in the Montecito Union School District and is literally just steps from But-

terfly Beach. The beach side of 101 in Montecito has always felt like a secret surfer paradise to me, with trails to Hammonds and pristine spots that only materialize when the tide is right. This little cottage is in the perfect place to enjoy that allure, plus all of Monte-cito’s well-known amenities. 1366 Dan-ielson is priced at $1,099,000.

A little farther south is a pair of cot-tages on Concha Loma in Carpinteria. Most of us think of Linden Avenue with its charming shops and restaurants, plus the campground and the world’s safest beach, when we think of Car-pinteria. Just a little farther away from the hubbub and the spotlight, Concha Loma is part of the even beachier side

of Carp. Down past the middle school and across from the Motel 6 is a more rural micro-neighborhood with fewer people and more of a surfer vibe. It shares the same renowned beach by a lesser known, lesser trafficked access.

At 891 and 893 Concha Loma sit a pair of board-and-batten cottages on a half-acre parcel with a rural look and feel. Separated from each other by a wide driveway lined with rustic river rocks, the cottages are almost a mirror image of each other, with three bed-rooms each. One has a bonus family room; the other has a fenced backyard area. Both have covered carports, and there’s plenty of off-street parking for visitors, as well.

The land these homes sit on is beau-tiful, with cottonwood trees and an artesian well. It reminds me of visiting my grandmother’s house in the coun-try when I was a kid — lots of room to

run around and adventures awaiting. The cottages are simple: plain wooden walls and floors with basic kitchens and amenities, and just one bathroom each. They definitely have a vacation-at-the-beach feel in a neighborhood that feels the same. The two cottages are one listing with an asking price of $1,500,000.

Both of these sets of cottages have been owned by the same families for approximately 30 years. Visit either of them and you’ll see why. When you find your own slice of beachy paradise, why would you want to live anywhere else?

Whether you fancy Montecito or Carpinteria, these cottages offer the ultimate beachfront living. I’ll stick with my cozy cottage for now, but you might find me walking by either of these houses, just about any day, on my way to the beach.

The name of landscape architect Lockwood de Forest III is syn-onymous with the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, which turned

90 this year. But he is also a pioneer of what’s suddenly on the forefront of California’s drought-fried frontal lobe: water-wise gardens. According to his son, Kellam, who is 89 years old and still lives in Santa Barbara, de Forest raged against lawns back in the 1920s and used the Botanic Garden to primarily show-case for native, more drought-tolerant species.

Today, after many decades in exile in the Bay Area, de Forest’s archives now reside at UCSB’s Art, Design & Architec-ture Museum (AD&A). It’s a great place to realize that, along with his innovative Botanic Garden plantings, the landscape architect laid the groundwork for the horticulture design elements that can be found throughout Santa Barbara.

De Forest was born the son of New York artist and furniture designer Lock-wood de Forest II, who had relocated to Santa Barbara for the last 17 years of his life. Although the elder artist appeared to be colorful and eccentric (among his collection of friends: Rudyard Kipling’s dad), “my father fit that description bet-ter,” said Kellam.

De Forest III studied landscape architecture at Harvard University and UC Berkeley before opening his Santa Barbara office in 1920, immedi-ately taking on a batch of estate garden assignments, including Arthur Meek-er’s Constantia and George Steedman’s Casa del Herrero.

In December 1925, Lockwood and his wife, Elizabeth, founded the Santa Barbara Gardener, a periodical they produced through 1942. Many histori-cal passages paint the portrait of Eliza-beth Kellam de Forest as her husband’s professional equal.

“That’s a little overstated,” Kellam said. “My mother supported my father completely. She never went to the office. She did the principle writing for the publication.”

De Forest designed and completed his Mission Canyon family home by 1926, which is the same year Kellam was

born. The Roman-style house on 2659 Todos Santos Lane — with its central atrium, five fireplaces, outdoor rooms, tiles from Damascus and India, and a lush, prefacing garden of native plants, sandstone, and browning Kikuyu grass—sits on 0.76 acres with only abstract references to Santa Barbara’s Mediterra-nean fixation. De Forest also worked on the adjacent William Wurster–designed home of his father-in-law and Botanic Garden bureaucrat Frederick Kellam, planting olive trees and pineapple guava hedges in gray (echoing the mountain color) in their shared driveway.

Except for two years serving dur-ing World War II, de Forest worked on myriad Botanic Garden projects until 1949, when, at a relatively young 53, he died of pneumonia. “He was pleased with the way it was going,” Kellam said of his father’s Botanic work, “but he died before he was completed.”

Decades later, UCSB’s AD&A Museum began as an extension of the collec-tion of an equally forward-thinking man, founder David Gebhard, who was actively collecting in the 1950s and ’60s. Today, curator Jocelyn Gibbs, who started at the museum in 2010, has helped rebrand of the institution, which now offers concerts, readings, a vibrant lecture series (Los Angeles Times architecLos Angeles Times architecLos Angeles Times -ture critic Christopher Hawthorne spoke recently), even knitting sessions, and, of course, yearlong exhibitions. Opening June 25 are the following exhibits: Sub Rosa: Behind the Scenes at the Museum, Computation & Expression: Projects from the Media Arts and Technology Program, and The Art of Illusion: The Carlos Diniz and The Art of Illusion: The Carlos Diniz andArchive.

including 5,000 drawings from his major works — went to UC Berkeley in the 1950s. But it finally returned to UCSB, thanks to a gentleman’s agreement of sorts between the two universities to maintain regionally cor-rect archives: Berkeley holds the works of Northern California architects, while UCSB houses Southern California’s.

“We always felt that the collection should come back,” said Gibbs, standing next to a cart overloaded with troves of de For-est’s correspondence, including an album he assembled for client Wright Ludington

with highlights from their voyage to Italy and Spain in 1922 as an exploratory research trip for Ludington’s Val Verde estate in Mon-tecito. Bonded by their shared passion for California landscape, the pair had met as boys at Ojai Valley’s The Thacher School.

De Forest’s letters predate the birth of Kel-lam, who for years worked in Hollywood running a research service for motion pic-ture and television production until his 1991 retirement. Today, the octogenarian resides at a senior-assistance complex near where he grew up. A younger brother, Lockwood IV, lives in Australia.

Kellam has only fond memories of their childhood. “It was a wonderful time,” said Kel-lam, whose parents worked hard but never at the expense of raising their boys. “There was family time, especially on the weekends. Fairly often, we went to the Botanic Garden.” Though he’s seen a lot of building and fears that “the developers keep trying to erase” Santa Barbara’s charm, Kellam still loves the area, perhaps because his father’s imprimatur can still be felt ubiquitously around town.

As for that storied Todos Santos Lane family home, it’s for sale, listed by Sotheby’s at $3,295,000. Eventually, a new owner will purchase the property and, along with it, the inherent history and legacy symbol-izing the very foundation of enchanting Santa Barbara. n

gardening

Oftentimes, when folks think about planting a bougainvillea or other drought-tolerant plants in their garden, they figure that

all they have to do is pop the thing in the ground, water it, and, voilà, they have an instantly sustainable landscape plant that can immediately fend for itself. Not so, amigos.

Bougainvilleas have fragile roots and, apart from requiring extra care and dili-gence when planting one, getting it estab-lished in your garden and teaching it to be self-sufficient can often be a complicated case.

Initially they have to be kept evenly moist and not allowed to dry out, just like any other landscape plant. As the plant gets going, though, it should be encour-aged to develop deep roots by watering thoroughly but less often. Their large and fibrous root systems will eventually go looking for a water source such as a nearby drip system, other irrigation areas in your garden, or even a leaky hose bib. It’s best to let the plant find its own water rather than irrigate it regularly with the rest of your garden.

In Pat Welsh’s indispensable South-ern California Organic Gardening, the ern California Organic Gardening, the ern California Organic Gardeningauthor gives step-by-step instructions on how to care for, irrigate, and establish a bougainvillea, beginning at the time of planting and continuing all the way up until the thing’s been in the ground for three years. “After three to five years,” she writes, “you can stop fertilizing in sum-

mer, stop watering in winter, and reduce the frequency of summer watering to once a month or every six weeks — or perhaps never, depending on placement and variety.”

Since bougainvilleas are so colorful, vibrant, and irresistible when displayed at the nursery, many people choose to grow them in pots or containers. Since most

types are such vigorous growers, I find that after a few years, their roots fill their containers, and they begin to decline. If I do opt to enjoy them in pots, I look for the less vigorous or compact types and use the largest containers I can manage. I use a well-draining potting or cactus soil, and I feed them regularly during the warmer months when the plant is actively growing.

Keep in mind, too, that although bougainvilleas often require little or no supplemental irrigation when planted in the ground, in pots they should always be treated like any other container plant. The soil and the roots should never be allowed to dry out completely.

I emphatically recommend Welsh’s book — and not just for the bougain-villea tutorial she offers, but for all her practical gardening knowledge and wis-dom. Not only is the book unique in that it is specific to gardening in SoCal, but it also gives the reader a month-by-month schedule of what’s to be done in the gar-den, including tips on feeding, watering, and pruning for individual plants.
