The SAP market is a mature market with a large install base of loyal

longstanding customers. Many SAP systems have started their

application life-cycle many years, sometimes decades ago and have

accumulated large amounts of data.

Large databases have received a substantial hit from Unicode migrations

which became compulsory as of SAP ERP 6.

Data volumes are growing ever more rapidly due to the expansion of

the global SAP data model.

Less than 5 years ago many SAP customers were still in the Gigabyte

range but the TB range (and beyond) is becoming the norm.

Challenge I: Large databases…

5

Large databases are putting a strain on the traditional SAP infrastructure and frequently

a cause for performance problems paired with high storage costs. They impede the

smooth delivery of testing and training environments, but more importantly large

databases pose an increased risk for failure on delivering an adequate disaster

recovery.

• Wide range of application and Netweaver components: multiple functional ERPinstances, CRM, Process Integration, Portal, Business Intelligence, Business Objects,Solution Manager, …

• Mix of ABAP and Java application servers and db servers

• Exotic components on Windows, Linux• Interdependencies between components

Challenge II: Complex SAP landscapes

6

Today’s SAP landscape has evolved far beyond from what was once a

monolithic integrated application with an integrated administration layer, to a

complex multi-component architecture

• “I cannot back-up my ERP system anymore within the agreed SLA”

• “I have over provisioned computing and storage and am only using a fraction of it. Still I pay for the

provisioned hardware and consequently DB and OS licenses”

• “I have back-ups of every single system and database, keeping them in synch is a full time job”

• “I need 3 days to restore my core system”

• “Restoring the full SAP landscape would be a nightmare”

• “We have a disaster recovery scenario but never executed it as a whole”

• “It takes a week to set up a training landscape”

• “Upgrading/patching my landscape takes two weeks admin work”

• “Simply provisioning a Unix server takes me 6 weeks”

• “I have a 5TB ERP database, do I really need 5TB storage on my testing and training environments?”

• “My SAP infrastructure and admin support budgets have sky rocketed!”

The challenges our SAP customers are facing today…

7

Customers are facing the combined challenge of complex SAP landscapes

and large databases. This leads to operational problems

• The traditional response is failing. We tended to take a mainly application

centric approach when the easy way of adding bigger boxes started to

fail. On an infrastructure level the traditional architectures reach the

limits of the scale up model

• In Accenture’s view, the challenges today’s SAP landscapes are facing can

neither be met by adopting a pure application nor a pure infrastructure-

centric approach• Customers will need to define a mixed approach while revising their current

SAP infrastructures and the way they are managed and consumed

There are multiple options for SAP cloud adoption out there. Each one is valid in

its own rights but private cloud is the most secure path into the fabric for the

What if a SAP customer wants to adopt cloud computing but

does not want to rely on external hosting nor on the public

cloud?

The only possibility would be to adopt a private cloud.

Adopting private cloud is not easy though.

A recent global market survey among more than 1,500

customers indicated that adopting private cloud on their own

without going through a transformation program leads in

66% of the cases to an increased infrastructure cost

footprint rather than delivering the promised TCOreductions…

Moving SAP onto a private cloud is more than a matter of transforming the

infrastructure

There are four  major thresholds that inhibit private cloud adoption:

• What is the best technology out there to build a private cloud? A lot of

vendors promise they can deliver and few actually can already

• IT and Business Transformation  – Self-service, move away from silo

organization, evolve IT into organization of makers, convergence of SAP,computing, network and storage skills

• Private cloud requires a rapid ramp-up of skills that might not even be

present at the moment

• Migration project  – certified migration of SAP applications to the new

infrastructure

SAP Private Cloud 3/3

16

In order to circumvent the thresholds inhibiting private cloud adoption

Accenture, NetApp and Cisco have developed the Private Cloud

Solution for SAP offering.

• We focused on vendors that are recognized by Accenture for their technology leadership

• Technology leadership research was established based on an in-depth market study including

extensive interviews with relevant vendors, own experiences and customer experiences

• Technology leadership makes abstraction of:

 – Market recognition: being recognized as leader by the market is as such not a valid criteria

for technology leadership. New technologies require some time before they are recognized

by the market. Therefore market recognition tends to favor older technologies.

 – Sales: being number one in the market is not enough. It is an indication but not a sufficient

criteria for technology leadership.

• The fact that we define reference vendors does NOT mean one could not establish fabric

computing with other vendors

• Customers could decide to deviate from the reference vendors because of: –  A preferred supplier relationship with other vendors

 –  Multi-vendor strategy

 –  Commercial reasons like discounts offered by other vendors creating a situation in which

the TCO with alternative vendors is more interesting

 – Updated vendor roadmap

 Accenture Private cloud market analysis
