SAP customers around the world are leveraging virtualization to optimize their SAP

landscapes and address IT challenges. These customers are:

• Virtualizing SAP and other mission-critical applications as part of a private

cloud strategy.

• Deploying new SAP landscapes as first enterprise resource planning (ERP)

application, additional SAP applications, or migrations from existing applications

such as ERP, Supplier Relationship Management (SRM), Customer Relationship

Management (CRM), or data warehouse.

• Migrating from legacy server and OS platforms such as UNIX, AIX, HP/UX, or

Solaris-based servers with RISC processors to more cost-effective servers based

on open source Linux and x86 processor architectures.

• Driving down application infrastructure costs by consolidating and centralizing

resources across lines of business.

Customers who virtualize SAP benefit from improved performance, lower TCO, and

improved application availability.

VCE, in partnership with SAP, is leading the way with virtual SAP landscapes. Vblock™

Systems offer a factory-integrated, enterprise-class IT infrastructure that streamlines

acquisition, deployment, and operations. Strict design control enables Vblock systems

to meet specific performance and availability levels so that IT can easily meet busi-

ness requirements as environments scale. Customers who previously spent 70% or

more of their IT budgets and staff time on maintaining infrastructure now can focus

on more strategic efforts that add more value to the business.

Why Vblock Systems are Ideal for SAP DeploymentsThe SAP Applications Performance

Standard (SAPS) provides a unit of

measurement used to define the perfor-

mance requirements of each SAP system

configuration. There are more than 15

SAP landscapes or application modules.

Typically eight servers are required for

each but this can vary based on the size

of applications and the user base.

Because they are modular, highly

scalable infrastructure, Vblock systems

fit the wide array of SAP deployment

requirements ranging from smaller

implementations to large, mission critical

production systems. VCE has validated

a maximum number of 7.1 million SAPS

on a Vblock System 700.

Another factor to consider in a Vblock

System deployment for SAP is business

continuity. Downtime can have a very

negative impact on business operations

and a company’s success. This makes

high availability and disaster recovery

crucial in SAP environments. Vblock

Systems provide a variety of VCE and

partner solutions for high availability

and fast operational recovery of SAP

applications from any infrastructure

component failure.

SAP applications are large and complex,

typically requiring a lot of manual labor

to deploy and support. This leads to

high operational costs. With Vblock

Systems, however, this complexity is

greatly reduced, operational efficiencies

are improved, and TCO is lowered.

Vblock System Benefits:

• Simplified provisioning of SAP

instances on Vblock System servers

is possible with the use of service

profile templates and an automa-

tion engine specifically designed for

Vblock Systems.

• SAP developers and testers can set

up new application servers and cloud

infrastructures quickly with a range of

Web-based self-service catalogs and

orchestration tools certified to run on

Vblock systems — such as VMware

vCloud Director and Cisco Intelligent

Automation for Cloud — which hide

the complexity of provisioning pro-

cesses from end users.

• The Vblock System Solution for SAP

Application Server Elasticity enables

IT organizations to better manage and

allocate their converged compute,

network, and storage resources.

• The Vblock System Solution for SAP

Mobility enables IT organizations

and service providers to migrate SAP

applications and resources between

Vblock Systems both locally and in

geographically separated data centers

in an automated, transparent, and

non-disruptive way.

Vblock Systems include:

• Vblock™ Series 300 an agile and

efficient data center-class system

that features modular, scalable perfor-

mance. It has a high-density, compact

fabric switch; integrated fabric-based

blade servers; and best-in-class uni-

fied storage. There are also a range of

configurations customers can choose

from to get the performance and ca-

pacity they need to meet SAP require-

ments. Simplified provisioning allows

IT professionals to marshal resources

quickly and efficiently.

• Vblock™ Series 700 an enterprise-

class, mission-critical system for the

world’s most demanding workloads

and service levels. It features the best

director-class fabric switch, most ad-

vanced fabric-based blade server, and

most trusted storage platform.

Due to the typical size and mission-

critical nature of SAP applications, most

have been deployed on the Vblock Se-

ries 700. The Vblock Series 300 may be

well suited for SAP applications in small

and medium-sized organizations and for

a testing and development environment.

Case Studies for SAP on Vblock SystemsAn aerospace company with 600

mission-critical SAP enterprise applica-

tions was using manual processes to

back up data onto tape and then driving

the tapes to a disaster recovery site in

another state. Compute and virtualized

resources could not be backed up. After

exploring several solutions, the company

decided to deploy a Vblock System

700, which enables the company to

back up not only data but compute and

virtualization environments as well to

dramatically decrease business risk. The

organizations Recovery Time Objective

(RTO) is expected to drop from four

days to between 30 and 90 minutes. Its

Recovery Point Objective (RPO) will be

reduced from hours to milliseconds due

to the asynchronous replication capa-

bility provided by EMC RecoverPoint

software.

A major apparel manufacturer with

global operations chose a variety of SAP

applications. Seeking to avoid the com-

plexity of a multivendor server, storage,

and network environment and seek-

ing an SAP platform that could scale

flexibly and efficiently to meet busi-

ness requirements, the company chose

Vblock Series 700 configured with flash

drives to support maximum I/O perfor-

mance. A second Vblock Series 700 was

configured with Fibre Channel storage

for failover, development and quality

assurance. “The integration of compute,

network, and storage into a single stack

is transforming the way we as IT profes-

sionals view our SAP landscape,” said

the CEO, who reports significant new

efficiencies and operational cost savings.
