Summary

SymptomA new kernel is being provided by SAP for all SAP NetWeaver releases whichare supported with the 7.20 kernel. This kernel will be called the 7.20 EXTkernel. The 7.20 EXT kernel can be used as an alternative to the 7.20kernel.

Reason and PrerequisitesSAP Kernels are built on a specific version of the Operating System andcompiler.

When the OS or the compiler which are used during the builds run out ofvendor support customers could run into a support problem. SAP therforeneeds to provide a newer kernel which is built with the newer / supportedversion of the OS and compiler.

Against this background, an update of the SAP kernel make environment isrequired from time to time resulting in newer kernels being made availablefor the customer. Using these newer kernels ensures that customers canoperate a fully supported environment at all times.

From a compliance perspective it is important that a customer environmentis a fully supported one. Some of the compliance regulations (SOX, FDA)also require that customers use supported software environments.

Solution

General InformationThe usage of the 7.20 EXT kernel as an alternative to the 7.20 kernel issupported for all SAP NetWeaver releases which are supported with the 7.20kernel. The following NetWeaver releases are supported with 7.20 and 7.20EXT kernel:

o SAP NetWeaver 7.0

o SAP EhP1 for SAP NetWeaver 7.0


o SAP NetWeaver 7.1


o SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1

o SAP EhP1 for SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1

o SAP NetWeaver 7.3

For using the 7.20 EXT kernel in your SAP systems it might be necessary toupgrade the operating system and/or the database release used for theoperation of your SAP system. To check if your operating system and/ordatabase release are supported with the 7.20 EXT kernel, please check theProduct Availability Matrix (PAM) on the SAP Service Marketplacehttps://service.sap.com/pam

LimitationsIn general we recommend using either the 7.20 standard kernel or the 7.20EXT kernel for the central instance and all application servers of one SAPsystem. You have to use both kernel versions simultaneously if thefollowing two requirements have been met:

o You are using the same operating system platform for yourapplication servers and/or the central instance

o You are using different releases of the same operating systemplatform which are not all supported by the standard kernel or theEXT kernel

In this case you have to deactivate the automatic distribution by sapcpe ofthe SAP kernel from the central repository. You have to deploy the correctkernel (standard kernel or EXT kernel) manually for every applicationserver and the central instance.

This situation might especially occur if you are using older releases andmost recent releases of the same operating system platform.

Example: you are using Oracle Solaris 9 for some of your applicationservers and Oracle Solaris 11 for the other application servers of your SAPsystem. Solaris 9 is only supported with the 7.20 standard kernel, Solaris11 is only supported with the 7.20 EXT kernel.

DeliveryThe mode of delivery for the 7.20 EXT Kernel will be via the SAP ServiceMarketplace only. Customers who want to download the SAR packages directlyfrom the SAP Service Marketplace will find these under the kernelcomponents for the respective release.

The kernel can be directly applied to your system during system upgrade,system update and the deployment of support package stacks.
