The Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce goes to great lengths to provide its members with top-notch services. With hours of planning and organizing, the Chamber makes no excuses for
second-rate service and its members are no different.
Many businesses see the Sarpy Chamber as a way to get their name out in the community and network with other local businesses.
With the support of the Sarpy Chamber, the business community continues to grow.
LONG-STANDING MEMBERS OF SARPY CHAMBER
Kahler-Dolce Mortuary has been a chamber member since the 1980s.
Patrick Shannon, manager at Kahler-Dolce Mortuary, said the former owners migrated to the Sarpy Chamber after the Papillion Chamber dissolved. At that time there was a push to form a county-wide Chamber to support all communities.
The former owners were very excited to be a part of this new venture and were one of the first businesses to sign with the newly formed Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce.
“The owners were very forward thinking in that respect and liked the idea of a Sarpy County Chamber,” Shannon said.
Shannon said that throughout the years
many employees at Kahler-Dolce have participated in a variety of Chamber events which include fundraising efforts, planning the Grand Giveaway, Coffee and Contacts, and participated in the development courses.
“The Chamber provides us with up-to-date information on issues happening throughout the county,” Shannon said. “They tell us what businesses are coming, what legislation issues may affect us and a way to network with new people.”
Shannon said it can be hard for a new business to get off the ground. Finding the niche can be difficult. The Chamber can help by providing networking opportunities that just can’t be done with advertising alone.

Gene’s Auto and Truck opened in September 1980 and has provided automotive services to the Sarpy County community and specializes in automotive diagnostic testing.
Gene Pfahl, owner of Gene’s Auto and Truck, has been a chamber member for many years and views the Chamber as right of passage for new businesses.
“Joining the Chamber is one of those things that prove you are a legitimate business, so to speak,” Pfahl said.
But it’s the personal connections that has kept Pfahl’s family-owned business in the Sarpy Chamber. As time went on, Pfahl was able to meet more and more chamber members and make more community connections. He now feels like he has an awareness in the community.
Pfahl encourages all business owners to join the Sarpy Chamber and take advantage of the programs they provide.
“When I was starting out I didn’t know those kind of services were out there,” he said. “If the Chamber is offering those services, take advantage of it.”
Because of his continued membership in the Sarpy Chamber, Pfahl has also referred other clients to services provided by other members. It’s a way of reconnecting with those businesses, he said.

America’s distinguishing volunteerism attribute is evident in the heartland of Nebraska, and is making a profound impact on people’s lives.
“I’ve witnessed the amazing phenomenon of volunteerism throughout my travels in this country,” Former President George W. Bush said.
Former President Bill Clinton said volunteering is an act of heroism on a grand scale. “And it matters profoundly,” Clinton said.
Acts of service for others is clearly demonstrated in Sarpy County’s cities of Bellevue, Gretna, La Vista, Papillion, Springfield and the community of Offutt Air Force Base.
“This is a generous and giving community with many volunteer opportunities and ways to give back,” said Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce President Karen Gibler.
A 2014 Census Bureau head count numbered 172,193 residents in the county. That’s an increase of 13,000 in four years. For the people of Sarpy County, life is largely about serving others.
“Sarpy County is bustling with new business and organizations that have endured economic fluxes for decades, so it’s no surprise that the county is made up of people who care about their neighbors,” Gibler said.
“We have tremendous volunteer opportunities for a business staff or a group or even for a family to serve together,” she said.
A place to call homeBuilding homes interest-free for people is a passion for volunteers
of Habitat for Humanity of Sarpy County. The mission entails building and renovating houses for people in
need, “so there are decent houses in which every person can experience God’s love grow into all that God intends.”
Darren Martin is one man whose life has dramatically changed because of volunteerism.
“I’ve always dreamed of providing my family with a home,” the busy father said. “My wife and I had five children within five years and I was the only one working, so we were in a lot of debt. I lost hope of ever providing my family with a home.”
Upon graduation from Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, the Martins were well-equipped to establish their financial future. Then they soon found out about the work of Habitat for Humanity.
“We mailed off the application and waited, prayed and trusted that God would take care of us,” Martin began.
The first Habitat confirmation letter landed in the mailbox of their rented house and sparked hope of a home for Martin’s family.
While working a night-shift job, Martin helped with construction on the house during the day to fulfill Habitat’s required 75 hours of sweat equity.
“My wife had a harder time completing the hours because she homeschools our children, but she made it happen.” he said.
“The volunteers are dedicated to teaching, training and helping families reach their dreams. I am in awe of them and what they do for others. We are so blessed to be part of Habitat for Humanity,” Martin said, “ … and now I see myself in a new way.”
Happily ever afterOne of the Habitat for Humanity volunteers is Betty Cartwright, a
board member and homeowner selection chairperson. The Ohio native laughed as she admitted she did not like living
here when she and her military husband first arrived in Nebraska. They agreed that their stay would be temporary.
That was more than 12 years ago. After her husband died of cancer in 2003, a friend prodded
Cartwright to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, but Cartwright’s own childhood memories provided the final nudge to yield her time to help other people.
“My siblings and I grew up with a single mother — that’s the main reason I joined Habitat. When my parents split up in the 1950s, there were no programs like this, so Mom struggled to find a home for us,” Cartwright said.
Cartwright is now living happily ever after in Nebraska.“Volunteering for Habitat has made a difference in my life. I meet
the applicants at the beginning of the process, then when they get the keys to the house, I see the tears in their eyes ... that means a lot to me,” she said.
Helping others healA variety of volunteer opportunities exists at the Nebraska
Medicine-Bellevue hospital.“There are currently 14 volunteers who have various schedules
and duties throughout the hospital,” said Bill Citro, senior marketing project coordinator.
“The group of volunteers make a real difference and positively impact our visitors’ time at the hospital whether they are here for a clinic visit, a test, an inpatient stay or as a family member coming to visit a loved one,” he said.
Those who volunteer there are called “hospitality ambassadors.” Their mission? Greet visitors and serve as a tour guide.
Hospitality cart volunteers drive a coffee cart through the hospital offering the guests drinks, cookies and magazines.
“Others help with clerical and office tasks in specific departments,” Citro said. “There are several Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who serve communion to patients.”
Some of the volunteers, he said, have served there since the hospital opened in May 2010. One such volunteer is Marie Starbuck.
“She knows a lot about at least two things: quilting and Nebraska

Medicine-Bellevue. She confidently leads guests to their destinations, problem solving along the way as needed,” Citro said.
“Oftentimes the wheelchairs needed to transport patients ‘disappear,’ but she knows all of the hiding spots throughout the building,” he said. “Starbuck takes volunteering very seriously and makes sure to inform staff of any needs guests may have that would make their visits more efficient.”
Citro added that Nebraska Medicine-Bellevue is growing by leaps and bounds and is always in need of more volunteers.
An Open DoorSince 1954, the Open Door Mission has been helping break the
cycle of homelessness and poverty. The mission campus on north 23rd Street East in Omaha provides more than 800 beds to the homeless and serves over 2,000 meals to more than 275 people living in poverty.
They offer rehabilitation help, health care and a Bible-based discipleship program.
“There are always volunteer opportunities at the Open Door Mission,” Business Relations Coordinator Mimi Hannor said.
Walk-in volunteers are welcome at the Timberlake Outreach Center at 2107 E. Locust St. in Omaha Monday through Thursday between 11:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Sunday between 1 and 3 p.m.
The Open Door Mission’s plan helps people meet their basic human needs and engages them in programs to rebuild their lives.
Hannor said a great need is snack food items for the sack lunch program.
“More than 500 lunches are provided for clients who leave campus
each day for work, school, medical appointments, etc. These items can be purchased in large quantities and volunteers can place them into snack size bags,” Hannor said.
In addition, the Open Door Mission’s Veteran’s Housing First Program has 32 units which provide free housing and care for homeless veterans wanting to reclaim self-sufficiency.
It takes an ArmyJoan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s Restaurant founder Ray Kroc,
donated nearly $2 billion to The Salvation Army with the dream to “… bring [people] together by declaring our love to all of its children and showing them the faith we have in their future.”
Her financial gift has built more than 25 state-of-the-art Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Centers in America – including one in Omaha which employs 132.
“We’re the best kept secret in Omaha and we don’t want to be,” Kroc Center Business Director Madeline Moyer said.
The state-of-the-art community center focuses on providing four pillars of service: the arts, education, physical and spiritual components, she said.
“Volunteers coach or referee, or teach a class for children or for adults … people can share their God-given talents in many ways, year-round,” she said.
“Maybe you want to direct traffic or help with the senior citizens, filing in the office or helping with newsletters or summer camps … whatever your passion is, we have a spot for you,” she said.

The Ambassadors are vital to the success of the Sarpy Chamber. The Ambassadors volunteer their time to greet and welcome new businesses, members and prospects to our area and
chamber events. This group of more than 50 volunteers is the face of the chamber to the business community.
Ambassadors stay engaged through weekly event emails and updates as new members join. Members of this group attend as many ribbon cuttings and networking events as they can fit into their schedules each month. Having a large ambassador showing at events is key in making sure that all new members, prospects or newly engaged members feel welcome and immediately connected and immersed into the Sarpy Chamber. Showing up and supporting ribbon cuttings is also important for this group to show new business owners that we are here to support and encourage them in their new endeavor.
Karissa Williams with Offutt Collision Repair saw a need to get more involved in the Sarpy County business community.
“My first week on the job,” Williams said, “I went to the Sarpy Chamber and asked about becoming an ambassador.”
She was immediately connected with a group of engaged members of the Ambassador Group and jumped right into helping other members become more engaged as well.
“There’s a lot of great small businesses,” she said. “Sometimes they just need a little encouragement to get more involved.”
Megan Ziegenfuss with CharterWest National Bank also enjoys meeting new members.
In regard to the ribbon cuttings and grand openings, Ziegenfuss said, “it’s fun to be there and support new businesses.”
“It’s rewarding,” she said, “leading people to join and showing them the advantages of joining the Sarpy Chamber.”
Our ambassadors excel at connecting new people and businesses with existing members or chamber opportunities. This also helps the ambassadors grow and engage their businesses through new contacts and networking.
“It’s simply a good way to get connected with people,” said Mike Struebing with Headley Financial.

AMBASSADORS OFFER A FRIENDLY FACE, MORE
As the official public relations arm and welcoming committee of the Chamber, this is one of the most important volunteer opportunities for Chamber members. Ambassadors assist in maintaining open lines of communication between the Chamber, its new and ongoing members, and others in the local business community.Sarpy County Chamber Of Commerce
Struebing said being an ambassador is a great introduction to new members, instead of being just another sales guy making a call.
“I can show them just what the Sarpy Chamber can do for them,” he said. And with the rate of growth in the county, being a member of the chamber has its advantages.
“Sarpy County is where things are growing, things are popping,” Struebing said.
The ambassadors are a vibrant group, and the enthusiasm is catching!

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS KEEPS UP-TO-DATE
The Government Affairs Group is a group of business professionals and elected officials who promote and enhance a pro-business climate throughout Sarpy County and is designed
for those who want to know what’s happening legislatively in their community.
Government Affairs is comprised of professionals that include school representatives, elected officials and Chamber members that research, monitor and provide information on issues arising at local, state and federal government levels. This information is then communicated to the Sarpy Chamber Board of Directors and general membership at monthly meetings.
The meetings are open to all, and visitors and guests are encouraged to attend. The meeting agenda focuses on chamber activities, public school matters, Sarpy County projects and what’s coming up in the legislature; all reported on by the delegated, dedicated and passionate group members.
The goal of Government Affairs is to truly serve the best interest of the Sarpy County business community and to present and discuss new issues that pertain to certain cities. It’s more or less a great snap shot of what’s going on in community.
The meetings also provide a great opportunity for those new to the Sarpy County Chamber, much like Lora Felger, community and broker liaison for Health Alliance. “I am new to the Chamber, and my thought is that if I learn about what is happening in my community then I become a better citizen,” she said. “Government Affairs is the Chamber’s watchdog and monitors the State Legislature and issues that effect our community.”
“I am also able to connect with members of the Chamber, which gives me the opportunity to meet those members on a whole other level. I am meeting county and city administrators, and I would not have the opportunity to meet them otherwise. We meet to discuss each town in Sarpy County and stay on top of things, looking out for the best interest of our chamber members and the community as a whole.”
In addition to the information packed regular meetings, other Government Affairs events include the very popular and pertinent Legislative Coffees that are held two to four times each year. At these events, local senators are able to discuss upcoming legislative topics. After the presentation there is a question-and-answer period. Chamber members and guests are welcome to come and listen to local senators discuss issues such as taxes, health care, education, our veterans and large businesses such as Offutt Air Force Base which brings in over $1 billion to the community. These important, frank discussions show the senators’ support of the community.
Sarpy Sundaes is one of the more popular and fun events produced by Government Affairs. Ice cream is served at the State Capitol to say thank you and show the Sarpy Chamber’s support for what our elected officials are doing for the community.
The yearly Economic Outlook Breakfast is held in the fall and the State of the County is in the spring and presents the state of the county with economic updates. Topics and issues include Offutt Air Force Base, local schools including boundaries and common levee and other economical issues that have an impact on Sarpy County and the community as a whole.
Additional supplemental Government Affairs meetings are held throughout the year and cover special events such as elections where candidates and other elected officials are present. These as well are open to the public.
As a whole, Government Affairs is dedicated to providing transparency, relevant information and a network for those who work
in Sarpy County. Government Affairs is incredibly professional and this group provides an inviting environment, according to Jenny Janovich, marketing and administrative coordinator for Papillion Manor.
“I live in Douglas County yet work in Sarpy County so this group is a neat way to learn more about Sarpy County and the people who live and work here,” Janovich said. “That helps me have a better understanding of the people that I serve and their issues.”
“With Government Affairs there are different committees that deal with issues that are near and dear to the hearts of those who serve on them. There is an educations piece, county issues, roads, transportation, we all bring something to the table. I have enjoyed engaging with people and going to Legislative Coffee events to hear senators speak. As businesses we come together to get a feel of what’s going on and to get connected. And what is so great about this group is that they have wrapped their arms around me and gave me a warm welcome.”

TECHNOLOGY CAN ENHANCE BOTTOM LINE
The Technology Group works in support of the Sarpy Chamber and member businesses to better understand how technology can be utilized to grow member businesses.
In support of the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce’s mission to Educate, Advocate and Lead our membership, the Technology Group enables the Sarpy Chamber and its member businesses
to better understand how technology can be utilized to grow their business. The group promotes and reviews technology-related trends, issues and adoption rates on behalf of the Sarpy Chamber and its members and provides information that will help members identify new business opportunities.
The broad area of expertise that makes up this group helps it choose topics that will be relevant to businesses regardless of size or industry.
John Collard, senior analyst/software developer for Black Hills Energy, serves as the chair of this group. According to Collard, the early focus of this group was centered on the knowledge that many of the chamber’s members come from small or medium-sized businesses. “They often don’t have the tech savvy or the resources to implement a full-scale tech solution,” Collard said. “The group is designed to educate those businesses to make better and more informed technology decisions to help their businesses grow.”
This education has come from more than a dozen luncheons the group has hosted since it was founded in 2013. Topics have ranged from cyber security and POS systems to IT tips and tricks and how to more efficiently use mobile devices.
The Technology Group is currently working on new ways it com-municates with chamber members to get more information out on technology trends and issues. For example, in 2016 the Technology

22 2015 Member Directory and Chamber Guide
In an effort to connect, educate and promote women in business, the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce has launched the incred-ibly popular Sarpy Chamber Wisdom of Women Group. This
growing and energetic group of professional women meet monthly to build and support professional and personal success through networking, education and honest discussions involving women’s topics. The result is a band of business women in the Sarpy County community who share in advocacy, leadership and friendship.
The inception of SC Wisdom of Women came from a core group of women brought together by Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce President Karen Gibler. Gibler wanted to tackle issues that working women face but do not always discuss.
“The goal of our initial gathering of women was to create a chamber group that would support working women,” Gibler said. “We all face similar challenges like caring for our children and balancing our work and home responsibilities. As women we handle a lot of juggling. I’ve been there, and I put it all out there in the same room with other women to empower and encourage.”
Lizzie Countryman of CBSHome shares in Gibler’s sentiment. “As professionals trying to grow in our careers and balance the
demands of home life, it can be difficult to find basic time to engage with other like-minded women,” she said. “We are in a world where everyone is ‘connecting’ yet no one is communicating. This group has allowed women to meet and greet one another, hear powerful keynote speakers and make real relationships with one another. This empowers us as women privately and professionally.”
SC Wisdom of Women, due to the amazing dedication and passion of volunteers who make up the advisory group, has grown through a well-developed mission and an all-encompassing vision of what the group should look like and how it could be the most effective. This included creating a solid format of each monthly meeting that includes networking and socializing as well as a featured speaker.
Early in the group’s inception, women were polled to find out what they wanted to learn and hear about. The result is a wide variety of topics and events from fun wine tastings to more serious topics such as car repair, finance, safe and streamlined travel, and how to interweave work and home relationships. Since there is no one perfect day and time each month for all the women to get together, SC Wisdom of Women rotates from morning, afternoon and evening meeting times to make sure every woman has a well-suited option at least several times a year.
Vanessa Bang, store manager for Firestone, was part of the original group of women Gibler called upon and felt it was necessary to bring important topics to its members.
“Karen approached me and I felt that this group was something important to be a part of,” Bang said. “I work in a male-dominated industry and like that I can bring a somewhat scary topic like car care for women to the table for open discussions and questions. I really enjoy team bonding with other women and being a part of the Sarpy community. I come away each month confident and proud.”
SC Wisdom of Women meetings create an atmosphere conducive for networking and education, but this group also grows relationships and fellowship.
“I joined to network with other women in Sarpy County,” said Michelle Christensen of Papillion Windows and Siding. “This is an exciting, extremely professional group interested in helping each other out. We refer each other and conduct business within the group. I cannot stress enough what a tremendous asset this group is for the chamber.”
SC Women of Wisdom is open to all women and welcomes all guests. Costs are based upon activities, with Chamber members
WOMEN SHARE IN ADVOCACY AND LEADERSHIP
receiving discounts when applicable. This group is truly excited to expand and welcomes all women to come and check them out with good reason, said Kathy Seaman of AOI Corporation.
“Meeting others and sharing professional networking as well as personal fellowship in a neutral and non-threatening environment is good for everyone,” she said. “The Chamber group has worked to find interesting and beneficial meeting topics as well as a variety of times and locations, increasing our awareness of these businesses and their offerings.”

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS SEEK GROWTH
How do you become a leader? How do you build your network? Get involved in your community? These are common questions that young professionals ask themselves,
and the Sarpy Chamber Young Professionals Group (SCYP) offers some tools to answer them.
The SCYP hosts monthly events with the goal of educating all young professionals on networking, volunteerism and professional development. Topics at these events can range from volunteer opportunities and dressing for success to networking 101. These events have plenty of time for networking and local experts sharing their knowledge with the group and engaging them in conversation about their area of expertise. This allows young professionals an opportunity to ask questions and better understand these topics.
A few of the larger events this group host each year include an Executive Panel, Meet the Mayors Event and host opportunities to give back to the community.
The Executive Panel is hosted in July each year and is an opportunity for young professionals to hear from local executive’s on where they started, how they chose their path and other insights they may have for the group.
The Meet the Mayors event is a chance for the mayors from all five Sarpy cities to share information on what is going on and coming up in their cities. They also share what they are doing to recruit and retain young professionals to their area.
The SCYP also hosts opportunities to give back from a blood drive with the Red Cross to filling Easter eggs for the Kroc Center.
The Young Professionals Group is a program of the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce. The SCYP aims to attract and retain young talent to the Sarpy County area while developing the next generation of leaders. The SCYP offers a wealth of opportunities for young professionals to network, give back to the community and grow both personally and professionally! There is something in the SCYP for everyone.

“We had a lot of people help to fill Easter eggs for the Kroc Center’s hunt,” said Michael Dijak of Farm Bureau Financial Services. “It was cool that we had so many people come out and support our effort.”
The SCYP Advisory Group is a chance for young professionals to engage their leadership skills through the facilitating and plan-ning of the SCYP calendar. This allows them to get the experience of being part of a board or com-mittee and will be a jumping board for them to get involved in other chamber or non-profit volunteer groups.
“It’s a way for me to give back. It’s personal and professional development for me as well,” said Luke Hoffman of United Way of the Midlands, who was appointed to the advisory group as a mentee.
The SCYP Advisory Group continues to grow and engage new members of the community by adding to their group which keeps

The Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce offers the community at large an extensive array of programs, groups and events that promote economic prosperity for businesses and quality of life
for the people who call Sarpy County home. To further the com-mitment of taking Sarpy County to the next level in these areas, the chamber offers an invaluable, vital program called Leadership Sarpy.
Leadership Sarpy is a nine-month chamber program designed to educate future business leaders about Sarpy County as well as build a strong understanding of the current growth in the county and provide an outcome with lifelong business connections.
The program, which begins in August and ends with a graduation ceremony in May, starts with an application process that is open to all and not restricted to Sarpy Chamber members. Once accepted, participants will begin a journey designed to promote their best well-being, both personally and professionally, by giving their leadership class full exposure to the community.
The Leadership Sarpy program kicks off an exciting curriculum with a two-day retreat that focuses on leadership skills with team-building activities. Participants will challenge themselves on high rope courses that are 30 feet in air as well as other obstacles where students have to rely on their classmates; people who don’t really know one another but must utilize and trust one another. This teaches great support lessons and prepares them to rely on one another for the next several months.
Over the course of the program participants will spend one work day each month taking part in well-planned, pertinent activities and events. Topics covered each month include the county, state government, economic development, crisis management, quality of life and volunteerism, and public speaking and leadership. Topping the list of events is, by all accounts, the session where all travel via bus and are taken on a tour of each city in Sarpy County. Each city’s corresponding mayor boards the bus and spends valuable time with the students. This event always makes an impact.
But, it is the impact of the program as a whole that goes a long way with students, especially since so much is covered. New experi-ences and new insights are valuable and exciting as Diane McCutch-eon, district manager of FBG Service Corporation, can attest to. “The new slogan I have taken away from Leadership Sarpy is leaders are learners,” she said. “Through Leadership Sarpy I have experienced

and gained new perspectives about the community, environment and economy, as well as the challenges and opportunities that we face. It has been exciting to witness the passion everyone has for our state and community in their current positions.”
In addition to attending the monthly class sessions, all par-ticipants are included in a team-building activity called Legacy Project. Participants are divided into teams and develop and implement ideas that center on the community. All participants are also required to attend outside events and to volunteer for “Outside Experiences.”
Aiding in the success of Leadership Sarpy are passionate and enthusiastic volunteers without which the program would not be what it is today. Leadership Sarpy alumni make up a multitalented, multifaceted group who serve as mentors and on the Advisory Group. The Advisory Group meets with and reviews current classes, plans for future sessions and make themselves available as mentors.
And while the goal of Leadership Sarpy is to expose participants to the community, it can also showcase them and have an impact on their business and career. The program illuminates the many ways the Chamber can help their business by showing them successes of those who utilize the chamber and all it offers.
What is unique and uplifting about this program is what the students not only learn about their community, but also what they learn about themselves. That was the experience for Megan Ziegenfuss of Charter West Bank. Megan graduated from the program in May of 2014 and now sits on the advisory group and mentors the class of 2015.
“The big thing for me was that when I went into the program I

took leadership for granted,” she said. “Leadership was not in my title, so I didn’t think much about it. But now I can step up and coach people. That was something I did not expect.”
Ziegenfuss also said that while the program does require time and effort, it is very much worth it. “It was for me, most definitely.”

Driven business professionals often seek out opportunities to grow their knowledge base and skill set. However, not every business professional can afford the high costs of those courses.
The Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce has filled that void by providing affordable, educational classes in its Business Education Se-ries. The program began last year and hosts 10 business professionals in a series of two-hour sessions exposing them to a variety of training opportunities. Some of these offerings include how to maximize your profit, how to increase your sales and how to be a good leader.
Jim Barger, franchise owner of Action Coach, is one of the key members in the success and continuation of the Business Education Series. Barger, a coach of six years and former business owner, understands how difficult it can be to run a business.
“The big challenge for business owners is that they are really good at their trade but may not be familiar with training or accounting,” Barger said. “This can be very frustrating for the business owner. The Business Education Series exposes the business owner to a new way of tackling unfamiliar tasks.”
Since the creation of the education series Barger has facilitated classes on topics such as cash flow, exploring the role of the business owner and leadership.
Barger uses curriculum provided by Action Coach but tailors all material to the needs of the Sarpy Chamber to fit the members’ needs.
“The Chamber has a great opportunity to provide these services,” he said. “The business owners are gaining knowledge they may be missing.”

Useful and applicable is how Jim Masters, certified business coach and international trainer with Focal Point Business Coaching, would describe the program. He has been active in the Business Education Series and other similar programs.
When Masters left TD Ameritrade he was in search of a way to make an impact and looking at smaller businesses to fulfill that need. He opened Focal Point Business Coaching. He did what many new business owners do and joined the local Chamber of Commerce. But there was something still missing. Masters felt like a small fish in a big pond. He thirsted for more involvement and appreciation, and he wanted to make an impact, something he couldn’t do in the large Chamber of Commerce. So Masters set out to find a more suitable group he could call home.
“I only join groups that I can make an impact in and not sit on the sidelines,” Masters said. “I want to be involved in any group that I join.”
Masters said the Sarpy County Chamber is more open to new ideas and allows the membership to drive interest in programs, which he believes is how the Business Education Series came about. The Chamber provides information relating to their members’ needs and not just what the Chamber thinks is important, he said.
There he found the appreciation that was missing from his former group. Masters has continued to be active in the Sarpy County Chamber by attending meetings regularly, participating in Leadership Sarpy and heading the Executive Dialogue Committee.
Masters says he is asked about once a year to facilitate a learning session. In the past he has facilitated several sessions in the Business Education Series including goal setting, career success workshop, time management and sales training.
“In any job the only reason you advance is because of your knowledge and skills. If you are not increasing your knowledge then you are stuck in your skill set. The program really sells itself.”Jim Masters
“In any job the only reason you advance is because of your knowl-edge and skills,” he said. “If you are not increasing your knowledge then you are stuck in your skill set. The program really sells itself.”
Masters has attended the educational sessions and said he has gained a different perspective on issues because of it and that perspective is something he can pass along to his clients.
With some enthusiasm and the hunger to learn, programs such as the Business Education Series can take Sarpy County business professionals to the next level. And the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce will be there all along the way.
