A new science: TribologyTribology is the science of friction, lubrication and wear. It comes from the Greek word tribos, which means “rubbing”. Two of Scania’s leading scientists in the oil development programme are tribologists.

Everything you need to know about oil qualityWhat makes a good oil?Lubricating oil creates a thin, slippery barrier between two moving metal surfaces that reduces friction, carries away impurities and dissipates heat, thus preventing wear. A good oil has the right viscosity (thickness) at different operating temperatures. Thin oil offers less protection. Oil that is too thick offers resistance to moving parts – which means higher fuel consumption. A good oil should also resist chemical changes due to heat and mechanical shearing.

How is oil quality specified officially?The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (www.acea.be) specifies four heavy-duty diesel engine oils: E2, E4, E6 and E7. E7 is recommended for highly rated diesel engines meeting Euro 1, Euro 2, Euro 3 and Euro 4 emission requirements and running under severe conditions. The specifications define the minimum quality level for self-certification to the European Engine Lubricants Quality Mana-gement System (EELQMS). Oil companies might conduct several engine bench tests – each one taking up to 300 hours – to qualify an oil for rating.

Why did we carry out our own oil tests?Even though oil companies test and certify their products to standard specifications, oils vary considerably in quality, even in the top E7 category. So we tested many E7 oils in order to identify the best ones – and to create an even higher standard for Scania Oil.

Why a field test?We don’t think that running “bench tests” (engine tests in laborato-ries) is enough. Trucks and buses should be run under ordinary field conditions in order to simulate the normal forces at work on engines, including engine braking, polluted air, drivetrain vibrations, asym-metric road vibrations, etc.

What is LDF?At Scania, we developed the Long Drain Field test standard, or LDF for short. Long drain means that we test the oils and engines for double our recommended mileages. For example, an ordinary long haulage truck would normally call for an oil change every 60,000 km. So we would run an oil for 120,000 km in that vehicle before draining it and examining the engine parts. Where’s the proof?After testing a batch of oil in engines or gearboxes for 1-2 years, we examine the oil for soot and chemical changes that weaken its protec-tive characteristics. We also take the engine or gearbox completely apart. It takes about two days for experts to examine all the parts, and to judge how well they have endured. They will reject the oil if they find the slightest deposit or wear. Since 1996, Scania has field-tested about 100 different engine oils and 50 different gearbox and axle oils, in normal customer vehicles. The tests took up to three years to perform, depending on the application and number of oil change cycles. The inspections took place at our workshops around Europe.

Dr. Mattias Berger received his PhD in Material Science from Uppsala University in 2001. He is responsible for engine oil testing at Scania.

Dr. Henrik Åström received his PhD in Machine Elements at the Luleå University of Technology in 1993. He is responsible for gearbox and axle oil testing at Scania.

And the results are…Our extensive testing programme for engine oils identified three with exceptionally high resistance to wear and deposits over longer operational periods, which contributes to engine performance and operating economy.

One is a high-performance E7 oil for normal conditions and two with even higher quality, called LDF and LDF2. LDF stands for the Scania testing standard, the long drain field test. LDF oils can withstand pro-longed operational stress in a changing climate.

It’s never too late to change to a better oil.If you’re driving a Scania delivered in 2008 or later, it was filled with Scania Oil LDF2 – the very highest quality – at the factory. If you’re heading to your Scania workshop soon for an oil change, why not insist on refilling with LDF2 – because it makes a difference to your vehicle’s operation. So even if you have an older vehicle, why not maintain it at a Scania workshop in order to get the best oil available?
