    The Brief

To create a series of screen-printed posters to illustrate different ways in which Scare Tactics are used by the government and the media to manipulate the general public.

    Brief Type

    Collaboration with Bethany Dalzell.

    Context & Target Audience

Fear is a powerful took in mass manipulation. People are constantly scared using media networks such as the internet into behaving a certain way, i.e. debt, disease, germs, people and jobs. Although there is often a legitimate amount of worry at the core this is often exaggerated and manipulated.

The project picks up on particular themes in a light-hearted way whilst the message at the core is serious. By using a satirical tone of voice and imagery as the main communication, the message should be evident and easy to decipher.

The posters are targeted at politically driven young adults with a social conscience. They would perhaps read The Guardian, and have an interest in fashion, but not be a sheep.

    Considerations

There were many considerations which needed to be decided for each different print, i.e. topic, colour, typography and message.

It was also important to work as a team in regards to ideas and printing, in order for the brief to run smoothly and efficiently. In regards to the copy writing, this was crucial to ensure that the correct message would be taken from the final prints.

It is also essential to recognise how these prints would work on a larger scale, reaching a larger audience.

    Solution

A series of 4 screen-printed posters. Exploring on different areas each print focuses on one method of print, and incorporates a pattern and typography to illustrate the point at hand.

    Evaluation

I found this brief both enjoyable as Beth and I worked really well as a team, and remained organised and focused, however we had many set backs from day one in regards to screen-printing. So in terms of this, I feel I have learnt and gained what I wanted to from this brief - not only better screen-printing skills, but how to work as a team at busy periods and with major print problems to work around.

    Advertising Campaigns

Many advertising campaigns, as the examples above, aim to intentionally scare the general public through the media and clever, strategic marketing by making us think we need to invest in a certain product or act a certain way. This form of manipulation is done through imagery, the message being delivered, typography, colour and emotions. This occurs in magazines, on billboards and television on a daily basis, without one necessarily picking up on the subliminal manipulation.

    Germs

This poster draws attention to the fact that we are visually manipulated by the media, international bleach companies and the NHS into worrying we have germs in our homes, encouraging us to invest in products.

    Scare Tactics

Noun: Scare Tactics is the use of fear to influence the opinions and actions of others towards some specific end.

    Pills

This poster showcases the hypocritical relationship with the medias obsession with weight and body image. The NHS have had a backlash of both overweight and underweight female patients in recent years, yet are selling pink pills on the shelf as a weight loss aid.

    Money

This poster shows how payday loan companies extort customers for profits by using scare tactics to promote their products, particularly at key times of the year such as Christmas.

    Poster Campaigns

The prints would be located around cities and towns in order to create awareness of these tactics on a daily basis, whilst reaching a larger target audience, and a larger variety of people.
