Worksheet for each student Clipboard for each student Pencil for each student Magnifier for each student (optional) Soil thermometer Outdoor thermometer

Estimated Duration – 30 minutes

1. In advance, you have the option of collecting a few samples of items that meet some of the scavenger

hunt clues. 2. Pass out worksheet, clipboard, pencil, and magnifier (optional) to each student. Assign adults to work

with groups of students. 3. Explain students will try to find as many of the items listed on the scavenger hunt as they can. It’s OK if

not all of the items can be found or if they cannot get through the entire list in the time allotted. 4. Read clues t the students before they begin. Remind students to ask for help if they cannot read a clue. 5. Explain that students should write down the name or draw a picture of the item that applies to a clue.

Reinforce that the response should be based on observations and not what they think fits. Point out where the soil and outdoor thermometers are placed for all groups to use.

6. Allow time at the end of the lesson to get student feedback about what was found and provide more information about how the items fit the clue or identify additional items that fit the clue.

7. Return any collected items to the habitat they were found in.

If it is raining, use plastic covers over the clipboards.

Groups of 3-4 students per adult is ideal. Smaller the better for first graders.

Student attempts to complete the worksheet.

Student can explain why he/she chose the items/answers.
