SCB NEWSLETTERAPRIL 2011

The year so far……

Both bands have been busy working on new pieces since January and are getting a good repertoire to see them through to Christmas! Ian has been purchasing a few new pieces for the training band so their library is starting to build up and the main band have been able to borrow a considerable amount of pieces from Colchester Band to try out for a change.

Music in the pads

There is a list attached that shows all the music that we have in the pads at the moment…IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT that you check through your pad between now and our first concerts to make sure that you have a piece and enough copies. It is particularly embarrassing if we have deps and they cannot find a part, so please make sure that it is there (and it is filed in a logical way!).

Mel has identified the following pieces (also in red on the list) that we are working on that need the most practise to get them up to a playable standard….this process would be greatly speeded up if everyone could take the time to practice or even just look through the pieces at home between practices, particularly with the number of bank holidays we have coming up!

Concerts this year…..

The website is now fully updated with most of the concerts we anticipate having for the rest of the year (main band) – there will be the usual Christmas carolling that will be arranged nearer the time. All details that are known are on the website and anything to be confirmed will be updated as and when we know.

Unfortunately, this year has seen the loss of bookings that we usually have at Colchester Castle Park and Nicholas Everitt part in Oulton Broad, due to the recent public spending cuts so we have lost some well paying jobs.

We really need everyone to go onto the website NOW and fill out their availability for everything that they can so that we can start filling the seats of those who can’t make it. As ever, we always struggle to fill seats so the more warning we have the better.

Social networking!

A few of you are members of the Band’s group on Facebook and you should be able to see new events appear on their to promote our concerts. Can you help with this promotion by ‘sharing’ this event so that it appears on your newsfeed so that others can see it?

Page 2: SCB Newsletter April 2011

You should also feel free to post anything on the page that you think may be useful or relevant….there are often videos of other bands performing the pieces that we’re working on on YouTube and if you come across a good one, feel free to share!Training Band

The training band has its first public engagements this year…..members should have details from Ian and co, but they have been booked to perform at Bacton Middle School as part of a concert they are holding, and also the British Legion ‘Poppy Picnic’ event in Haughley on Saturday 11 th June. The event starts around 12pm and begins with a picnic and will be followed by various events and performances throughout the afternoon.

Joint Concert with Stowmarket Chorale – Thursday 2nd June

We performed last year with the choir in the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts and the main band are expecting to do so again this year. Details of times, programme and ticket availability will be confirmed nearer the time.

Live Jukebox – Saturday 4th June

We have been accumulating a lot of our music this year with this event in mind. It will take place in Wilkes Way (near Asda) as part of the Stowmarket Festival which takes place between Friday 27 th May and Sunday 5th June, so details will be published in their festival brochure and delivered to all the residents of Stowmarket.

The idea is that, like a jukebox, we have a list of pieces and members of the public will be able to pay to hear what they want. As well as raising money, it should also give us an idea of what the people want to listen to!

To make the event successful, we REALLY need some supporters to help stop people in the street and to take their money and ‘orders’ for their music. If you could also spread the word to friends and family and get them to come down and do their shopping on that day, that would be great!

Small group needed – 26th and 27th May

We have a booking to play as part of the Bury Festival on Thursday 26 th May at the Abbeygate Picturehouse after they show the film Brassed Off. The film starts at 6pm and will finish at around 7.45pm and they would like a small group for up to half an hour. We only need a small group of players but obviously need all parts covered, so if you can make it, please let us know. You can also come and watch the film first if you want….tickets are £7 if bought through Polly (film is certificate 15).

We also need a small group to play at the Stowmarket Festival Launch Event, which is taking place on Friday 27th May between 4pm and 7pm. We haven’t a confirmed time at the moment but we should be performing later in the slot and it will be an opportunity to promote the Jukebox concert. Obviously the time will be inconvenient for some of you, but if you think you can make it, let us know.

Panto time again….oh yes it is!

We have the panto tickets booked already!! Twenty five seats (the whole of row B and six on the front row) are booked for the New Wolsey Theatre’s rock ‘n’ roll version of Robin Hood on Saturday 14 th

January. They are £8.50 each (no concessions) so if you would like to book your seat, please let Polly know.

If you want to pay with cash please do so by putting it in an envelope labelled with name of player and number needed. If you want to pay by cheque, these won’t be cashed until much nearer the time, so please just let Polly know how many tickets you want as soon as you know and payment can be made later this year.

All band members, family, friends etc are welcome to come along….the more, the merrier!

Next committee meeting
