YEAR 7 SCHOLARSHIPSAcademic excellence, achievement and high aspirations are key features of an education at Kingsley. As a result, a limited number of academic and Kingsley scholarships (up to 30% of fees) are awarded to a number of new Year 7 pupils in recognition of their academic excellence. Candidates for the academic scholarship will be selected on the basis of their performance in the entrance examination. This means that any Kingsley Preparatory pupils who wish to be considered for this scholarship should also register for the entrance examination.

Once selected, girls are invited into school for an academic and prestigious scholarship selection morning, during which candidates will sit an additional examination which will further test their abilities in English, mathematics and science as well as in critical thinking and written communication. They will also participate in a small group discussion with the Headteacher on an appropriate topic in order to further assess their oral communication and thinking skills.

Creative and performance scholarships (up to 20% of fees) are also awarded in recognition of excellence in and commitment to music, drama, art and sport. Selection for these scholarships will take place in the week preceding the entrance examination. Kingsley Preparatory pupils wishing to be considered for a performance scholarship should complete the scholarship application form. They are not required to sit the entrance examination. All external candidates are required to complete the scholarship application form and return it at the time of registering for the academic entrance examination.

The suitability for performance scholarships and requirements for candidates on selection mornings are detailed over the following pages.

Your daughter may apply for up to two creative and performance scholarships, plus the all-rounder scholarship.

Scholars can expect to go to the top of the pile when applying for higher education, apprenticeships or employment. Pride in gaining a scholarship award is immense and the status and prestige can be carried through life. At Kingsley we recognise that not every student can excel in every area so we offer a range of scholarships to ensure that all students can be considered, no matter what their particular skill, talent or academic strength. The system aims to provide experience of a selection process alongside vital interview skills so that even if they are unsuccessful, students will benefit from the opportunity to be considered.

The process for internal and external candidates differs as we use our existing knowledge of our current students as a basis when assessing their suitability for a scholarship.

WHOLE SCHOOL

FROM ‘JESSIE SPAGHETTI’ TO FASHION MARKETING & MANAGEMENT. GEORGIE TELLS US ABOUT HER PASSION FOR TEXTILES AND TAKES US BACK TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.

Some of my earliest childhood memories are of staying at my grandma’s house. She loved sewing and we’d spend hours doing cross-stitch together. One Christmas she gave me a rag doll kit. I made part of the doll each time I stayed with her (a leg, an arm etc) until one day it was finally finished. I named the doll ‘Jessie Spaghetti’ because her hair reminded me of stringy spaghetti; she’s one of my most prized possessions.

Textiles became my favourite subject at school and I chose to study it at both GCSE and A-level. I love creating things and working towards an end product - something you can use and enjoy. My teacher, Mrs Dempsey, is really inspirational. She’s so passionate about textiles and her knowledge is amazing. Despite being an expert, she doesn’t try to dictate to us; she listens to our ideas and helps us to make them work.

I have always been interested in fashion. I love reading magazines and I follow a number of fashion bloggers and designers on Instagram. I’m fascinated by the idea that things that were fashionable years ago can suddenly become ‘in vogue’ again. I’m also interested in upcycling. For one of our AS projects we were briefed with reusing an old shirt. I produced a cushion from one of my dad’s old pilot shirts, using smocking and various other techniques to embellish the pockets and shoulder tabs. It looked great!

Students are given much more creative freedom with their projects at A-level. I was keen to design and produce an outfit to promote gender equality, taking inspiration from Emma Watson (who, as well as being an accomplished actor, is a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador) and the HeForShe campaign. I began researching ideas, looking at the outfits Emma wears for different occasions. Although she sometimes wears dresses for red-carpet events, she often opts for trousers or jumpsuits. I also spent time researching the HeForShe campaign, watching videos on the website and even contacting one of the women at the campaign, who sent me some useful information. She also invited me to take part in this year’s ‘HeForShe Arts Week’ in London but, unfortunately, it coincided with my A-level exams.

I wanted to challenge the stereotype of women in skirts, so I designed an outfit with a pair of trousers. They have buttoning down the sides and a loose fit. The top features two contrasting designs to reflect the fact that women can be feminine (conveyed by flowers and a floaty sleeve) but also strong and powerful (the silver represents armour).

I used lots of different skills and techniques when making my outfit. The flowers were produced with the laser cutter, which I also used to cut shapes out of the sleeve. The silver shoulder pad is smocked, which was time-consuming to do but adds texture, complementing the texture of the flowers. I also used a special technique to heat and shrink parts of the material, which gives an interesting effect.

I recently applied and was shortlisted for ‘Young Fashion Designer of the Year’. As part of the selection process I was interviewed by a panel of experts from the fashion industry. I was also invited to exhibit my work at RGS, a school in Worcester. I had to design and construct my own stand, deciding what information to include and how to present it. The event was well attended and I enjoyed chatting to people about my project. I also got to meet the other seven shortlisted candidates and see their work (the standard of which was very high). I was delighted to be awarded the ‘runner-up’ prize.

After all my hard work the icing on the cake was receiving my A-level result. I was awarded an A grade, with 100/100 for my project work. I have been offered a place at the University of Southampton to study Fashion Marketing and Management, which should open up lots of exciting opportunities for me in the future.
