Statutory Guidance for
Schools and Colleges
This brochure outlines how CSWP - The Careers Guidance Company can support your school or college to fulfill its statutory duties relating to careers information, advice and guidance to students in years 8 to 13. A new revised statutory guidance for schools on carrying out their duties relating to Careers Guidance was published in April 2014. All Schools and Colleges are now responsible for:
New Statutory Guidance How CSWP can help
All students from year 8-13 must have independent careers advice and guidance.
CSWP advisers have a range of extensive experience, and a strong track record of delivering careers advice in schools and colleges.
Careers guidance must be combined with advice and guidance which is independent, and from sources external to the school.
We have over 30 years of experience of delivering independent careers advice and guidance.
Schools must ensure that students aged over 16 are clear on their duty to participate in education and training, and that they are aware of the options available to them.
Our local knowledge of training courses, apprenticeships and the Labour Market means that our CSWP advisers can confidently advise young people into different progression routes.
Students from Year 9 with an Education Health and Care Plan must receive focus on independent living and participation in society.
CSWP’s specialist career advisers will support the school or college to ensure they meet their local statutory duties relating to careers guidance to young people.
Every school should engage fully with their local employers to ensure a real-world connection to enhance their knowledge on employability.
We have a variety of Labour Market sources of information that inform our practice, along with an established network of local employers.
Schools should secure access to confidential face-to-face careers guidance. It is likely to be particularly useful for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, those who are at risk of disengaging or those who have special educational needs, learning difficulties or disabilities.
CSWP can provide intensive support for students with multiple and complex issues. We have a long history of working in partnership with mainstream, special schools and colleges in the West Midlands.
Schools should have a strategy for the careers advice and guidance they provide to young people, which should be embedded with a clear framework linked to outcomes.
CSWP can provide bespoke careers education consultancy and support towards achieving a careers quality standard.
Schools should satisfy themselves of the quality of any external organisations they plan to work with.
We are a matrix accredited organisation and committed to continuous professional development.
