River Bell Award: RICK CALHOUNPresident of Cargo Carriers, a business of Cargill Inc. and Senior Vice President of Grain & Oilseed Supply Chain North America, Mr. Rick Calhoun oversees Cargill’s barge and marine operations in North America.

Rick joined Cargill as a grain merchant in 1976 and held various merchandising and management positions with the company through 1985. After supervising Cargill’s trading with the US Department of Agriculture’s Commodity Credit Corp. in Kansas City, MO, he transferred to Minneapolis where he became involved in government trading and rail rate negotiations. In 1992, the Cargill Grain Division appointed him Assistant Vice President. Later appointed Vice President, Rick assumed oversight of the North America Grain’s rail transportation and administrative areas in October 1998. Cargill Marine and Terminal named Rick Chairman of the Board in August 2000 and then President in June 2004. Cargill folded Cargill Marine and Terminal into the parent company in 2010 and Rick’s title shifted to President, Cargo Carriers at that time.

Rick formerly served on the Kansas City Board of Trade and has worked on temporary international business assignments in Mexico, Ukraine and Argentina. A former member of the National Grain and Feed Association’s (NFGA) Board of Directors and Executive Committee, he served as chairman of the association from 2002 to 2004. He is a past member of the Inland Waterways Users Board.

Rick served as Chairman of the Waterways Council, Inc., from 2009 to 2011 and served on the board of directors of MARC2000 prior to its merger with the Waterways Council, Inc.

A native of Emporia, KS, Rick graduated with honors from Kansas State University in 1976 with a degree in business management.

River Legend Award: CAPTAIN CLARKE C. “DOC” HAWLEYDuring the course of his long river career, Doc Hawley not only served as master of three of the five remaining Mississippi River System steamboats, but he has done much to promote river history. Except for two winter towboating stints, Doc has spent his entire career working with passengers and crew on excursion and tourist steamboats. His steamboating days began on the tramping excursion boat Avalon where he worked as a popcorn cooker and calliope player. He moved on to the tourist boat Delta Queen, then to the excursion boat Belle of Louisville and finally to the excursion steamer Natchez.

Doc has hosted US presidents, government officials, royalty, entertainment and sports stars, river buffs and countless media people. After almost every trip, he can be found on deck discussing some aspect of steamboating with passengers. Doc displays boundless generosity in sharing steamboat artifacts and knowledge with his river friends. He has preserved steam calliope music on several tapes and records and co-founded the National Rivers Hall of Fame. Local media have dubbed Doc the “Pied Piper of the French Quarter” for his calliope playing on the Natchez. Doc has probably seen more of the western rivers than any living steamboater, with knowledge of eight rivers in 17 states and a pilot’s license for 1,370 miles on four rivers. The National Mississippi River Museum honored Doc in 1993.

On June 12, 2012, Jarvise Shelton, trimmer on the M/V Richard A. Baker, was prepping barges on the Mississippi River near St. Louis when he spotted a small fishing boat drifting 20 to 30 feet away. The fiberglass bass boat, holding three adults and two children, had lost power and was heading into a fleet of barges anchored in the middle of the river. Jarvise and his crewmate Kyle Hardman ran back to the towboat and launched a rubber Zodiac, reaching the fishing boat with only a dozen feet before collision. The stranded men did not catch the first line Shelton and Hardman threw, so the mariners got closer and tried again. The current pulled the nose of the Zodiac under, flipping the rubber boat and throwing the rescuers. Both men were sucked underwater. Jarvise grabbed a rope off the Zodiac and pulled himself up, but Kyle lost his life. All five members of the fishing boat survived. The US Coast Guard presented Jarvise Shelton and, posthumously, Kyle Hardman with the Gold Lifesaving Medal for bravery and self-sacrifice. The 24-karat gold medal, one of the oldest and rarest awards, has been issued fewer than 700 times since 1874.

BOARD of TrusteesWelcome to the Seamen’s Church Institute’s (SCI) 14th Annual River Bell Awards Luncheon. Thank you for your generous support of the mariners we serve.

Notable people in the maritime industry contribute to well-being and enhance the community through their dedication and work. This afternoon, we look more closely at three outstanding examples of maritime leadership and the enormous contributions they have made to our world.

For many of you, today’s River Bell Awards Luncheon typifies your connection with SCI. But the Institute does more than just celebrate the achievements of great leaders. We actively work day in and day out to put people—the people who power this industry—at the forefront our mission of service. Our Ministry on the Rivers and Gulf (MOR+G) chaplains travel the lengths of the waterways to be present for the men and women whose daily efforts keep commerce flowing. Always ready to respond to those in need, they care for the heart and soul of the maritime industry.

We invite you to learn more about SCI, MOR+G and today’s honorees. Looking closer, you might just discover something surprising.

SCI promotes the safety, dignity and improved working environment for the men and women serving in North American and international maritime workplaces. Founded in 1834, the Institute is a voluntary, ecumenical agency affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Take a closer look at seamenschurch.org/tacl

The Commandant of the Coast Guard takes great pleasure in presenting the Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award to the captains and crew of the Uninspected Towing Vessels RICHARD A. BAKER, for their assistance during the rescue of three adults and two young children on the

afternoon of June 12, 2012.  One crewmember, Kyle Hardman tragically lost his life during the rescue; the fact that all other victims survived uninjured is a testament to the courage, skill, and cooperative spirit of professional river men in the Western Rivers.  Their unselfish actions and

valiant service reflect great credit upon themselves and are in keeping with the highest traditions of humanitarian service.
