IHY Overview

Objectives1. Causal relationship between external processes and planetary magnetospheres,

ionospheres, and atmospheres2. Sun-heliosphere system outward to the heliopause -- The new frontier3. Foster international scientific cooperation in the study of Heliophysical phenomena4. Communicate the unique scientific results to the general public

• IGY and Space Age 50th Anniversary, and ISTP 10th

•Maximizes public interest•Provides global scientific focus

• Solar Minimum•Sun in simplest state•Events well separated

• Large number of space and ground observatories operating

• Focused science program• Establish baselines

• Cross-cutting solar system research

• Global studies of large scale processes

• Requires broad range of scientific disciplines

• “Heliophysics”

• Share costs and resources• Coordinated use of facilities

many of which are unique• Fosters cooperation in space

physics• Most science for dollar

invested• Maximum public outreach

IHY is being set up as an enabling activity for the grass-roots scientist to drive co-ordinated observations and to encourage international collaborations.

The official IHY Web site is at http://ihy2007.org

So what does it do for me?

Enables campaigns/access to instruments/data

Coordinates meetings to encourage collaboration (e.g. UN meetings in developing countries)

Acts as focus for information dissemination, operations planning, PR etc, etc…

National Coordinators’ roles

• To provide a link between the European Steering Committee and the National Researchers– Information transfer– Identify specific requirements

• To stimulate/Coordinate the IHY activities– 3 operating national committees (UK, France and

Spain), several more in formation• Activities towards the national Agencies to obtain

funding.

How can I participate ?

• Subscribe to the IHY web site:

http://ihy2007.org/get_involved.shtml

• Utilize the European web site: http://www.lesia.obspm.fr/IHY/

• Contact your National Coordinator: create/consolidate the national or regional working groups

• Join an existing Coordinated Investigation Program or propose a new one(proposal forms available on web sites)

• Attend the European Planning Meeting in Paris on 10-13 January 2006

1st European General Assembly : 10-13 January 2006, Paris, France

http://www.lesia.obspm.fr/IHY/IHY_colloque

We are setting up arrangements for the running of the IHY project and for this we need inputs from the community (topical areas, instrumentation, facilities etc…): - How can we all make the best use of the IHY2007 opportunity?

Meeting Goals

to present the status the European IHY activities.

to illustrate the scientific context and to present the operational framework for 2007-2008. Concept of CIPs.To complete a first CIP listing for observing campaign tests in 2006.

to review ground-based and space instruments as well as facilities (including data bases and virtual observatories) that are expected to be available in 2007-8.

The European Planning Meeting

IMPLEMENTATION FOR IHY

The user just needs to know where there is a Web facility or e-mail facility to allow the generation of a specific ‘CIP’.

The ‘CIP’ could be submitted to an IHY library and refined by a relevant contact in the IHY group. YOU CAN DO THIS NOW AT www.ihy.rl.ac.uk

In this way, IHY is built up, well before 2007, as the CIP library grows.

In 2005-6, the CIPs should be defined/refined, and scheduled, as the operational programme is put into place, but the originator of the CIP should be able to see at any point, via the Web, the progress of his CIP.

Quite apart from anything else, this ‘ownership’ of the CIPs should lead to an extremely efficient exploitation of the data – as with the SOHO mission.

The UK Approach – The Coordinated Investigation Programme

Page 12: SCIENCE DURING THE INTERNATIONAL HELIOPHYSICAL YEAR (IHY 2007-8) The European Perspective An international program of scientific research to understand

(http://ihy2007.org ; http://www.lesia.obspm.fr/IHY/) 12

Continuing the UK example:

IHY Web information and links to key groups for multi-instrument planning, e.g.

SOHO/Solar-B/STEREO - RAL/MSSL (Richard Harrison)

Cluster/EISCAT - RAL (Jackie Davis)

Ulysses/Cluster – Imperial College (Bob Forsyth)

IPS (EISCAT)/SOHO – Aberystwyth (Andy Breen)

Such clear links/contacts will provide a clear route to suggest and run your CIP.

BUT, remember also, non-instrument collaborations, e.g. CIPs between modelling groups, can be set up in same way.

The UK Approach – Multi-Instrument Planning

The Balkan and Black Sea Region Approach

• Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Turkey, Ukraine

• Regional Planning Meeting in Sozopol, Bulgaria, 6-8 June 2005 (organized by Katya Georgieva, STIL, BAS)

– website: http://www.stil.bas.bg/IHY/ – Publish a new international refereed scientific journal:

“SUN AND GEOSPHERE”– Science topics (also with the Russian Academy of Sciences)– Instrument networks (coordination of existing instruments,

upgrades, development of new instruments)– Observing Campaigns– Regular regional meetings– Public Outreach

The French Approach

• Committee is formed, met on 2 June 2005– website: http://www.astro.uio.no/~schmiede/index_IHY.html

• Three directions:– Campaigns (CIPs) based on French contributions to

ground-based and space instrumentation, on operating centers and data bases

– Education (PAF: Programme Académique de Formation): propose a specific teaching modules that will be used in Universities across France

– Public Outreach: links with IPY (Antarctica-Dome C); Space Weather; exhibits; planetarium shows.

In Summary:Goals of IHY Europe

• a transmission belt, an adding machine, an amplifier

• Information about and promotion of the IHY activities

• Stimulate the creation of national/regional working teams

• Bring out the common scientific interests of all national/regional working teams

• Link with other European efforts (COST, SWWT, etc).

• Help isolated groups/scientists

• Organize the proposals for international (European) funding, in particular for the Marie Curie Actions (EEC FP6 Programme) and Public Outreach (EEC Science and Society Programme)
