Scientific Research Method (Hammer-bell experiment)

Step

1

Define your

problem

What was the alien’s problem?

Step 2

Make Observations

What observation did the alien make?

What was the alien’s testable question?

Step 3

Construct a hypothesis

What was the alien’s hypothesis?

Step

4

Test your hypothesis with experiment.

(Define your experiment)

Materials What materials did the alien get?

Experimental

Group

What is the definition of an experimental group?

What was the alien’s experimental group?

Control Group What is the definition of a control group?

What was the alien’s control group?

Dependent variable

What is a dependent variable?

What was the dependent variable in the alien’s hammer bell experiment?

Independent variable

What is an independent variable?

What was the independent variable in the alien’s hammer bell experiment?

Step

5

Collect Data What procedure does the alien use to perform his or her

experiment?

Step

6

Record your

data

Step

7

Analyze data What did the alien do to analyze these data?

What did the alien do mathematically:

Draw what the alien did visually:

Step

8

Repeat,

Redesign or New hypothesis

What reason could the alien have for repeating the

experiment?

What reason could the alien have for redesigning the experiment

What reason could the alien have for forming a new hypothesis?

Step

9

Peer review

and Publish

What does it mean to review?

Who are the alien’s peers?

If most of the alien’s peers do not think the experiment was accurate will it be accepted for publication in a scientific

journal?

Repeat,

Redesign or New hypothesis

If you got the results you expected, is this step even

necessary? Why or why not.

Step 9

Peer review and Publish

Before you publish your experimental proposal (i.e. hand it in to my desk) please have two other classmates check your

work and have them sign here. __________________ ___________________

The Law and Theory of Grocery

Shopping (instructions)

1. Make a title called “The Law of Grocery Store Shopping”

Underneath the title; in black text write one paragraph

covering the law of grocery store shopping. Laws are used

to determine what will always happen. Laws do not tell us

why events happen.

2. Make a title called “The Theory of Grocery Store Shopping”

Underneath the title copy the law paragraph you wrote in

step #1 above and paste it below this title. Next, using red

colored text edit your law paragraph to convert it into a

theory for grocery store shopping. To do this, you must add

(in red text) the likely reasons why the events in your law

paragraph always happened. If your theory is good, it can

be used for all the times you grocery shop. This is because

theories that survive are tested by many experiments (i.e.

different trips to the grocery store.)

3. E-mail Mr. Robbins your final paragraphs. To get full credit

you need to meet the following criteria.

1. Proper formatting (typed with correct titles and text

colors)

2. At least 5 events must happen in your first paragraph

about the law of grocery store shopping.

3. Your law paragraph should contain only events that

always happen and should contain no reasons for why

these events happen.

4. Your theory paragraph should contain reasons for why

events happen. The reasons given should be true for

every time you shop at the grocery store.

Write letter to Ima Wrong describing how she can design a good experiment to test her

conclusion: Is the sweet spot is really on the back of people’s tongues.

1. Make sure you discuss each of the 9 steps of the scientific method.

2. Include these vocabulary words: Inquiry, Observation, Inference, Testable question,

Hypothesis, Experiment, Independent variable, Dependent variable, Control group,

Experimental group. Use extra paper as needed. You may choose to type your letter.
