Improvement of Existing 3D Scanning Devices

    600

    STUDENT GRANT PROGRAM

My project is to find the best 3D scanning hardware on the market or in development and improve upon thos

designs and make a better consumer product from it. I am proposing to research existing products, set design

benchmarks, and build a working prototype of a 3D scanner. This 3D scanner would be able to input the full

shape and dimensions into 3D modeling software. In this process I will research competing company's

products for design ideas as well as research their patents held in relevant areas. From this research I will set

design benchmarks (where I want the product to be). With the design benchmarks in mind I will then construc

a working prototype. I will then work with the University of Idaho to get the design patented and on the

market. With this product on the market and available to consumers people with little to no experience with

3D modeling software will be able to scan in existing items into a 3D environment. This technology will makethe process of 3D printing that much easier and available to everyone. With the support of the Student Grant

Proposal I will be able to make this project come try of making 3D modeling and therefore 3D printing easy

    enough for anyone to use.

Office of Research & Economic Development

    875 Perimeter Drive MS 3010

    University of Idaho

    Moscow, ID 83844-3010

To the Office of Research & Economic Development,

My name is Scotty Hardwick I am a senior at the University of Idaho in the Mechanical

Engineering department. I am hoping to focus my career in consumer product development. I

am seeking funding to research and develop an innovative 3D scanner that will simplify the

design process for people all over the world. With my product people can easily make

improvements to existing products as well as make a 3D drawing of a model in a matter of

minutes. This research project will improve upon 3D copier/scanners that have recently come

out in the marketplace. These products scan an existing physical model and input it into 3D

modeling software. I will research the competing products currently on the market and the

patents that have been filed. I will then set design benchmarks so that this new product can

compete in the market place. With a list of design benchmarks I will then design and construct a

    working prototype.

This project will be invaluable to my education by learning a great deal about the design

process, the patent process, as well as the process of bench-marking competing products. This

will be a great compliment to my class room education by allowing me more hands on

practices. These skills will easily translate into job skills. This new product will also benefit the

University of Idaho in both the prestige of getting a well-recognized product to market and

provide a profit through patent licensing and selling the final product to consumers. This

research can streamline inventing and the design process in making an easy to use 3D scanner

that can make the 3D modeling much easier.

The funding for this project is currently nonexistent. Without the support from the

Student Grant Proposal this project will not be able to be conducted. The design and

prototyping portion of this project is an expensive process. Many different materials and parts

will need to be purchased to construct a working prototype. Without support this project

    cannot even begin.

    Sincerely,

    Scotty Hardwick

    Narrative:Objective:

I am conducting research to develop a consumer product that could change the way

people model 3D objects. 3D printing and therefore 3D modeling is a quickly growing area. 3D

Printers are just starting to reach the consumer marketplace, due to decreasing cost and

increasing availability. A solution for someone with no 3D modeling experience use the 3D

printers is something that is lacking in the current marketplace. I am applying for a Student

Grant Proposal to develop my idea into a working prototype and then a consumer product.

3D Printers have broad applications. They are used by hobbyists, engineers, and

inventors. 3D printers use plastics to print a computer automated design (CAD) model in the X,

Y, and Z planes. This is an improvement from a traditional printer because it has depth to it.

These printed models are very sturdy and can even be used in some applications. Often the

printed plastic model will be a first iteration for an inventor or engineer that will later be

replaced by a metal equivalent when actually made for full functionality. 3D printers are also

called rapid prototypers for their relatively quick turn over speed from computer model to

physical prototype. The focus of my research is to develop the physical scanner to scan a 3D model into

modeling software. This will improve a users ability to input a preexisting design or item into

3D modeling software. To work in conjunction with my scanner I would need to develop

software that can take the scanned images and put them into one model that you could then

edit or print on a 3D printer. There are some 3D scanners that have recently come on the

market in the past few years. These products are expensive and not very user friendly. With my

research I hope to make this product simple enough for anyone to use and cheap enough that

    anyone can afford.

With support for the Student Grand Proposal I could do research into the competing

consumer product. From this research I will find the products strengths and weaknesses. I will

then take this data and apply it toward a new design. From the research on current consumer

products, my engineering experience, and the faculty resources here at the University of Idaho I

can make a product that is better than what is currently on the market and can get it to the

    consumer for cheaper.

    Importance:

The growing need for 3D printers is ever growing. Typical color printers were once

thought of as an item that was not wanted and/or not needed when they were first introduced.

It wasnt until they hit the market and became widely available that interest started to grow.

Now there is almost a color printer in every household across America. The next big thing is

going to be the 3D printer. Once they become widely known and available to the consumermarket they will take off. With a growing interest in 3D printing people will have an increase in

need for easy to input into 3D modeling software.

I have taken two semesters of 3D CAD modeling as part of the University of Idaho

engineering curriculum. I now have the knowledge to make virtually anything in the CAD

software SolidWorks and Catia. My product would make it so someone without the CAD

modeling experience can input a 3D model of a real item into CAD software. This would greatly

  • 7/30/2019 Scotty Hardwick's SGP

    11/13

increase the ease of use of the CAD software by eliminating the need to design from scratch

and will increase how user friendly the 3D printers are as well.

Most people dont get the chance to take a class in 3D modeling. My product would

greatly benefit these people by cutting down the time that it takes to learn how to use 3D

modeling software. This project would greatly increase my knowledge in the area or 3D modeling, 3D

printing, and getting consumer products to market. These skills would be invaluable on a

resume for job applications and also would help when working on a job in consumer product

development. Doing the hands-on work necessary to be successful on this research would be a

great complement to the in class knowledge I have gotten at the University of Idaho.

This research would be greatly beneficial to the University of Idaho. The first benefit

would be through the prestige that developing a widely used and well accepted product would

bring to the university. This would be a great tool to attract potential engineers and scientist to

the university. The second benefit is financial. The university would have the rights to the

patent on the product and through the sale of products and licensing deals that could come

from these patents the university could make a great deal of money.

    Methods:

For this project much of the starting research will be online research to compare similar

consumer products. The second part of this project will be doing hands-on work with 3D

scanning technology to try and improve upon the existing products.

This research will include Google searches for similar products. Once I get a list of the

leading products in this area I will then go to the companies that own these products and get

more technical details about how their products work. Also on the company websites I will look

for any information on patents they have pertaining to their product. I will then check the

United States Patent Office website and search for patents owned by the list of companies aswell as the products and their technologies. Next I will review other websites that give feedback

on my list of products. An example of the type of research I will do is of RealViews 3D desktop

scanner. I will gather as much technical detail about this product as possible and look at the

patents they have on their product (Real-View www.TweakTown.com). With this information

I can move onto the next phase of the design process.

With the information from the research completed I can then set benchmarks to where I

need to get my product at to be able to outcompete and sell on the market. During this process

I will need to keep in mind the currently owned patents and make sure I am not infringing on

any of the existing patents and look for areas where I can apply for them for any new

technology that could arise from this project. I will build a working prototype of my newproduct. Much of the details of this second step will rely heavily on what I find in the research

portion as well as what I set as the benchmarks. Also, I will consult with faculty members of the

University of Idaho to help out in areas that I am lacking enough knowledge in.

    Timeline:

I will get this project at least a working prototype within the first year. For the research

portion of this project I will get done by June 17th. To get a sellable consumer product can take

    Additional Information:Institutional resources available:

The University has many resources at my disposal as a student. The main resource that I

will use is the machine shop and the Catia lab (advanced computer modeling lab). I will use theCatia lab on campus to do the 3D mockup of my prototype. With the use of the machine shop

as well as the 3D printer in the Catia lab I will be able to construct a physical prototype.

Other than the physical places offered to me as a student one of the greatest assets will

be the access to the faculty at the university. I will need to consult with the computer science

faculty members to get help with bridging the gap between the 3D scanner and a computer. I

can foresee needing other faculty support depending on what design benchmarks I set.

    Other sources of funding:

I do not have any other sources of funding for this project.

Plan to disseminate to the university:

To get this information out to the school I plan on presenting my prototype and poster

at the graduate design expo in July of 2014. I will present my working prototype and with it I

will have a poster that covers the process of design and how I got to the latest prototype.

    Regulatory committee approval:

My project will not be in need of any regulatory committee approval.

    Other:

    Nothing else need be said.
