SCUBA DIVING

Scuba diving is popular, scuba diving is easy and scuba diving is fun. Scuba diving as outdoor recreation is gainingin popularity, while participation in other pastimes is diminishing. Why is scuba diving so popular?

Over 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water. The allure and mystery of the underwater world has inspired

the human imagination since prehistory, from the mythological monsters described by seafaring people, to the

science fiction of Jules Verne and the modern underwater adventures in Hollywood films. Breath-hold diving,

dangerous though it can be, has been used to collect pearls, sponges and valuable commodities from the sea floor for

many generations.

Advances in underwater exploration began nearly three centuries ago using diving bells and large cumbersome

sealed suits using pumped air from the surface. Only very recently advances in technology and mechanics haveallowed people to visit this domain safely for exploration using comfortable, self-contained air delivery systems

NAUI, the National Association of Underwater Instructors, was formed in 1960 to regulate and teach safe scuba

diving to enthusiasts of this new sport. PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, was formed in

1967.

In the 1970's, scuba equipment continued to evolve and the typical scuba system was enhanced by buoyancy

compensation vests, better valves and submersible pressure gauges. Through the 1980's and 1990's, scuba as

a recreational sport became a multi-billion dollar industry with its popularity prompting even more innovation in

the design and the engineering of better, safer, lighter, more comfortable equipment.

Today, scuba diving is accessible to almost anyone with only a modest investment in equipment. Anywhere you want

to dive you can usually find a dive shop near-at-hand to rent tanks, go on a guided dive with a master diver, take a

chartered boat or just strap on the tanks and swim out from the shore.

Course 1 :: DISCOVER SCUBA DIV ING (DSD)

This introductory program allows you to safely experience the thrill of diving in three easy steps. Your PADI Instructorconducts a brief orientation followed by your first underwater diving experience in a swimming pool. There you willlearn to use scuba equipment and become comfortable with your new environment. The following morning, under thecareful supervision of your Instructor, you'll enjoy two dives in the calm, shallow waters of the Arabian.

diving techniques then practice your diving skills in the pool before discovering the tranquil beauty of our underwaterwonderland. Must be able to Float/Swim for 10 minutes and complete either a 100% meters continuous swim or 300meters continuous swim with snorkel & fins

FAQS ON SCUBA DIVING

What is SCUBA?SCUBA stands for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. It is the equipment developed by the worldfamous underwater explorer and conservationist - Jacques Cousteau together with Emile Gagnan in the mid fortiesfor the French navy during the Second World War. After the war, diving turned into a recreational sport which hassince been taken up by millions worldwide.

What are the requirements to learn diving?Recreational diving is a sport that requires a reasonable degree of physical fitness. One should be able toswim 200 metres continuously and tread water for 10 minutes for Open Water Certification and above. Areasonable command of English is helpful as the courses involve a basic understanding of Physics,

Physiology, Environment, etc. Enthusiasm is a major plus!! The minimum age is 10 years and there is no

upper limit.

Who are the major certification agencies?PADI (Professional association of Diving Instructors), BSAC (British Sub-Aqua Club), NAUI (NationalAssociation of Underwater Instructors), SSI (Scuba Schools International), CMAS (French Diving

Federation) and various small clubs teach and certify divers.

PADI is by far the largest international organization teaching recreational scuba diving and with amarket share of approx. 80%, the clear leader worldwide. PADI was incorporated in the early 1970sand is based in Santa Clara, California, USA. To date PADI has certified in excess of 12 Million divers

worldwide.

Why dive?The only answer to this question is - Why Not? There is truly no greater "high" than an exhilarating dive incrystal clear waters with plenty of colorful coral and fish!! Diving offers different things to different people.

The list includes appreciating nature at its colorful best, marine conservation, photography, exploringshipwrecks, observing and studying sea life, navigation, search and rescue, etc. Primarily, diving is a

social sport and generally divers tend to be a very easy going lot who make a lot of friends without hang-ups about color, caste, race, etc.

Isn't diving dangerous?Definitely - if you are not properly qualified or ignore the rules. If, on the other hand, you are properlyqualified, follow all the basic rules and act responsibly, it is much safer than trying to cross the street inmost major cities during rush hour!! The only REAL danger of diving is that you get addicted to it!!
