THE FOUNDER

The Pioneer Dr. med. h. c. Karl Storz

Karl Storz founded his company for the production of ENT instruments, headlamps andbinocular loupes in 1945. This interest in medical vision, illumination, and thus physicsconsequently led him to specialize in endoscopes. He became fascinated with the idea ofdeveloping instruments that would enable the physician to look inside the body. However,the technology available at the time was still very limited. The area under examination in theinterior of the human body was illuminated with miniature electric lamps. Alternatively,attempts were made to reflect light from an external source into the body through anendoscopic tube.

Karl Storz quickly realized that this method would not provide adequate illumination and sohe resolved to find an alternative. In realizing this dream, Karl Storz benefited from two rathercontradictory character traits: The unerring meticulousness of the craftsman and theimaginative power of the artist and inventor. The solution he found for illumination in

endoscopy still holds true today: Verybright light generated by an externallight source is introduced into the bodythrough a flexible fiber optic light cable.The principle of “cold light illumination”paved the way for modern endoscopyand laid the foundation for the futuresuccess of the company KARL STORZ.With more than 400 patents and utilitymodels, Karl Storz has played a crucialrole in the development of modernendoscopy.

KARL STORZ participates both in national and international bodies involved in the development of standardsfor endoscopes and endoscopic accessories. Standardized design and development therefore have long beenimplemented consistently by KARL STORZ. The user can rest assured that all products by the KARL STORZgroup have been designed and constructed not only in compliance with strict internal quality guidelines, butalso with international standards. All data relevant for safe use, such as viewing direction, sizes anddiameters, or notes regarding sterilization of telescopes, are applied to the instruments, have been formulatedaccording to international standards, and therefore provide reliable information.

As we constantly seek to improve and modify our products, we reserve the right to make changes in designthat vary from catalog descriptions.

These products are by nomeans genuine products, since genuine KARL STORZ products are sold worldwide exclusively under thename of KARL STORZ, which appears on the packaging and the product. In the absence of such labeling,the product is not from KARL STORZ.
