www.schultebuildingsystems.comTS-324™ R oof System Seaming Guide3.0 IMPORTANCE OF SEAMING

3.1 Roof PerformanceThe roof panels must be correctly seamed before the roofsystem can provide i ts des igned wind l oad and w eatherresistance capability. This means that an un-seamed roofis subject to wind load f ailure and/ or weather r esistancefailure.

3.2 When to SeamWhenever possible, t he installed r oof panels should b eseamed at the f inish of each days work. If high wind orrain/snow conditions are imminent, the installed roof panelsmust be seamed before such conditions occur.

3.3 Temporary SeamingOn roofs requiring TripleLok and QuadLok seams, it maynot always be practical or feasible to motor seam the roofpanels until after the roof installation is completed. Motorseamed roof panels are difficult to reposition or replace andseaming machines may not always be available during theentire roof installation period.

In such cases, it may be desirable to temporarily RollLokseam the roof panels with the manual seaming tool, thenlater c omplete t he s eaming with t he motor seamingmachine.

Important: Temporary RollLok seaming must be approvedby the project’s designer.

9.4 Running the MachineCheck that the machine’s path is clear of power cords, tools, debris etc.

Start the machine by turning on the machine’s toggle switch.

Watch the m achine and f inished seam carefully f or anyindications of machine malfunction or faulty seaming.

Caution: The seaming m achine must always be i n t hevertical position while seaming. Do not allow the machineto tilt sideways when locking the machine onto the seam orwhile the machine is running. On roofs with high stand-offclips, walking or standing on the panel next to the machinecan deflect the panel and cause the machine to tilt. Do notwalk or stand on the panel next to the machine while it isrunning.

9.5 Stopping the MachineStop the machine by turning off the machine’s toggle switch.

Always allow sufficient space for the machine to coast afterturning the machine off.

Do not run the machine into previously installed end damsor other obstructions.

Caution: Stop the machine immediately and investigateany indications of machine malfunction or faulty seaming.

If the machine does not correctly f orm the seam, so notcontinue seaming but c all Schulte B uilding S ystems f orinstructions.

9.6 Un-locking the Machine

After the machine is turned off and has fully stopped, lift upthe locking ha ndle t o the op en po sition t o un-lock t hemachine from the seam.

While holding up the locking handle, the machine can belifted from the seam.

If the m achine must b e s topped an d r emoved be forecompleting the seam, use a felt marker to mark the positionof the machine’s front wheel on t he panel. The machinecan l ater b e r epositioned o n t he mark t o c omplete t heseaming.

9.7 Checking the Finished Seam

9.0 MOTOR SEAMING MACHINE OPERATION (Cont’d.)

At the completion of each seam, check the full length of theseam for any indications of faulty seaming. Refer to section11.3 and 12.3 for details of the correctly formed f inishedseam.

The seaming operation exerts high pressure bending forceson t he seam. Under such conditions, m inor burnishing, pressure m arks, an d balck oxide m arking o f t he seamsurface is normal.

Caution: B lack ox ide marking i s of ten mistaken to bedamage of the seam surface. Objectionalble black oxidecan be removed with mild cleaning solutions or solvents.

10.1 General10.0 MOTOR SEAMING MACHINE MAINTENANCE

The motor seaming machine is a precision fabricated, highperformance, portable roll forming machine. This relativelylightweight machine does the tough job of forming the extrastrong TripleLok and QuadLok seams under often ruggedfield conditions.

Although designed for tough industrial use, the seamingmachine r equires pr oper m aintenance to assure pr operseaming and efficient, trouble free operation.

10.2 Seaming RollsThe seaming rolls require the following regular maintenance:

a. Assure that the seaming machine’s seaming rollsare free of dirt, grease, sealant, etc.

b. Spray the seaming rolls with WD-40 (or equal) toprevent corrosion and minimize Galvalume bui ld-up on the rolls.

c. Assure that the seaming machine’s seaming rollsare tight on their shafts. Check and tighten the rolls’retainer screws as necessary.

d. On p ainted r oofs, e specially dur ing v ery h ot orabrasive conditions, spraying or misting the seams

10.3 LubricationLubricate the seaming machine with EP2 grease (or equal)after every 10,000 sq. ft. of roof area is seamed (or every5,000 sq. ft. if temperatures exceed 100º F .) Apply t hegrease at the (9) grease fittings on the top and sides of theseaming machine.

Caution: Failure to properly maintain the seaming machineas instructed below can result in faulty or damaged seamsand costly break-down of the seaming machine.

10.4 Cooling VentsTo prevent motor overheating, the motor has vents and aninternal fan to provide a cooling air flow over the internalmotor parts.

The cooling vents are located at the front and rear of themotor. At the f ront of the motor, the v ents are the slotsbetween the motor housing and t he gear box . The rearvents are on the end of the motor housing. Check frequently

to assure that these vents are kept clean and clear of debris, stringing sealant, etc.

While the machine is running, never cover the machine orplace it in a position where the cooling air flow to the ventswill be restricted.

with water, or a light lubricant such as WD-40, aheadof the seaming machine may significantly reduceburnishing and oxide marking of the seam surface.

e. On very dry Galvalume roofs, spraying or mistingthe seams with water, or a light lubricant such asWD-40, ahead of t he s eaming m achine m aysignificantly reduce seaming friction and Galvalumebuild-up on the seaming rolls.

f. When Q uadLok seaming, t he i ncreased seamingpressures may require spraying the seam with a lightlubricant, such as W D-40, ahead o f t he seamingmachine t o r educe bur nishing or ab rasion of t heseam surface.
