As Patron of Southern Cross Soloists I have looked on with pride witnessing the ensemble grow and sustain a long-term position in the Australian classical music scene. It is the friendly spirit and nature of the ensemble, and their stylish and elegant performances that endear them to audiences across the country.

Across their 18 year history, the group has earned a reputation as one of the fi nest chamber music ensembles in Australia. This reputation is earned from their busy schedule of national performances, at the Bangalow Music Festival in northern NSW and the award-winning SunWater and Stanwell Winter Music School. These bring outstanding opportunities to music students from rural centres of Queensland.

I had the pleasure of welcoming the Southern Cross Soloists to Government House last September. The ensemble delivered a beautiful program of music to the delight of all in attendance.

I wish Southern Cross Soloists all the best for their activities in 2013.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome the Southern Cross Soloists back to the Concert Hall stage for their 2013 season.

Building on a remarkably successful year which increased their audience reach and broadened their repertoire, the Southern Cross Soloists’ 2013 concert series once again offers a diverse selection of familiar classics, little known works and world premieres. It will not only showcase the individual talents of QPAC’s ensemble in residence, but offer the opportunity for collaboration with internationally renowned soloists.

QPAC is committed to supporting the activities of this fi ne chamber ensemble – from the presentation of their annual series to featuring their talents in events such as the Out of the Box festival for children and Brisbane Open House.

Congratulations to Creative Director Tania Frazer and all of the members of the ensemble for their ongoing commitment to the development of chamber music in Australia.

I’m sure that you will enjoy Sunday afternoons with the Southern Cross Soloists.

Being Artistic Director Laureate of this long established and fi ne chamber ensemble gives me a large amount of pride. I am delighted to see the group’s many pursuits throughout the annual season of events remaining vibrant, eclectic and relevant. With the benefi t of being able to watch the continued growth from 2000 kilometres away, I can honestly and proudly say that SxS has created a signifi cant and valuable mark on the Australian music scene. Welcome to 2013 with Southern Cross Soloists and an exceptional program brimming with fi rst time soloists and music from traditional through to the modern day.

In usual SxS style we are again pushing boundaries and defying conventions as we celebrate our 18th year as one of the few permanent chamber ensembles in Australia. We are delighted to be returning to the ambience of the superb QPAC Concert Hall for our 2013 series as ensemble in residence.

We have three exquisite soloists this year – all new to Southern Cross Soloists.

Deutsche Grammophon Artist and Grammy award nominee, Avi Avital, is taking the world by storm with the beautiful strains of his mandolin and this will be his inaugural trip to Australia (actually to the Southern Hemisphere). Plus this will also be our fi rst ever concert with a mandolin guest soloist.

Our second concert will be a knockout with gregarious, rogue percussion soloist Timothy Constable and the exquisite dancing of Kimberly Davis, Stacey McCallum and Shane Weatherby, choreographed by Rosetta Cook from 2ballerinas.

For our third concert we are thrilled to welcome our fi rst guest solo cellist – and what a cellist Li-Wei Qin is! Silver medalist at the 2001 Tchaikovsky Competition and 2002 Young Australian of the Year, Li-Wei is now an internationally acclaimed cello soloist and Universal Music recording artist. We are certainly looking forward to hearing his electrifying virtuosity, glorious sound and superb musicianship.

About Southern Cross SoloistsSince its formation in 1995, Southern Cross Soloists has become one of Australia’s most successful and widely respected chamber ensembles, establishing an international reputation for ground-breaking performance along the way.

The members of the Soloists are highly respected and sought-after musicians: Tania Frazer (oboe), Paul Dean (clarinet), Peter Luff (horn), Kevin Power (piano), Margaret Schindler (soprano), Alan Smith (violin) and Patrick Murphy (cello). The group’s unique combination of instruments allows for the performance of a wide variety of repertoire. They have undertaken successful international tours to the United States, New Zealand, China, Canada, South Korea and Singapore. They tour nationally each year, often with guest artists, and are guests of events such as the Camden Haven Festival, Brisbane Festival, Queensland Music Festival, and the Townsville International Festival of Chamber Music.

The esteemed Bangalow Music Festival was established by the ensemble in 2002. The festival has been described by Peter Sculthorpe as ‘the most exciting festival outside a capital city’ and has attracted artists including Ilya Konovalov, the Australian String Quartet, Slava and Leonard Grigoryan, Genevieve Lacey and Brett Dean.

Li-Wei Qin has appeared all over the world as a soloist and chamber musician. He won First Prize in the prestigious Naumburg Competition in New York in 2001, and has since performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic and Australian Chamber Orchestra, amongst many others.

Paul Dean CLARINETClarinetist and Artistic Director Laureate Paul Dean is the Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music and is in much demand as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. He regularly appears at both Australian and international music festivals and has appeared as a soloist with most of the major orchestras and chamber ensembles in Australia.

Margaret Schindler SOPRANOLyric soprano Margaret Schindler, a Senior Lecturer at Queensland Conservatorium Griffi th University, is a nationally recognised teacher who is also in great demand as a recitalist, particularly for her performances of Baroque and contemporary repertoire. Margaret has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in Australia and Europe.

Tania Frazer OBOECreative Director Tania Frazer, formerly Principal Oboe with the Israel Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, enjoys a busy career as a soloist and teacher. A recipient of numerous prizes and awards, Tania won fi rst prize at the Coleman International Competition in Los Angeles, the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Award in London and has appeared in orchestras all over the world under conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, Lorin Maazel, Christoph Eschenbach, Neemi Järvi and Sir Neville Marriner.

Peter Luff HORNHorn player Peter Luffis Senior Lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffi th University, as well as Associate Principal Horn with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. He is highly regarded as a player and teacher throughout Australia while also developing a successful career as a conductor. Peter performed in the inaugural Australian World Orchestra concert in 2011 and is a regular guest lecturer at the Australian National Academy of Music.

Kevin Power PIANOKevin Power OAM pursues a busy freelance career as a pianist, performing regularly as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician. He was formerly on the staff of the Queensland Conservatorium Griffi th University and is the Musical Director and Chorus Master of The Queensland Choir.
