MUSEUM EXPANSIONWould you like to know more about the proposed Museum expansion? A Concept Booklet is ready for your perusal – reflecting features requested through comments during community Open Houses, interviews, Cultural Services Board meetings and numerous staff meetings. The booklet is now available on our web site:

www.lovelandmuseumgallery.org/about-us/museum-expansion/

We hope you like what you see. If you have comments you’d like to share (positive or negative) please feel free to call me at (970) 962-2411 or email, [email protected].

OUR VISITORSNow that we are approaching a year since the installation of our Visitor Kiosk at the Museum we can better reflect where our visitors are from. Only a fraction of them use the kiosk, but it’s still a much better indicator of our users. The Rialto also tracks attendees through ticket purchases. Charts for both are below. We are always happy to see Loveland residents, but are always pleased to welcome our regional and traveling visitors.

A HISTORY AS ART EXHIBITOn view through July 8, 2018

MEZZANINE GALLERYAccumulation, a suspended installation of slip cast ceramics, is

a reflection on the negative impact that humans have had on our environment. This exhibition and slate of programming integrates

the history of water use and misuse in Colorado with an artistic interpretation inspired by these themes.

Loveland’s water supply is maintained at a high quality standard despite environmental conditions that can arise at a blink of an eye. Explore the different types of algae present in nature that affect our

community’s drinking water. Discover how monitoring ensures the water supply is both safe and tasty.

Exhibit includes images from Loveland Water and Power.

“This cloud hangs heavily, like the floating islands of plastic waste that loom over the animals living beneath them. Viewed from below the surface, the weight of our responsibility toward our environment becomes a heavy burden, an anxiety that becomes as inescapable as the microscopic particles that are beginning to saturate the water they contaminate.” ~ Hailey Myrick

GOVERNOR'S ART SHOW

The Loveland and Thompson Valley Rotary Clubs present the 27th annual art show and sale benefitting Rotary-sponsored charitable projects. Since 1991, The Governor's Art Show has featured a juried collection of outstanding works by Colorado artists in a wide variety of mediums, artistic techniques and styles. This exhibit beautifully combines excellence in art with the positive impact of guided philanthropy.

This year, one third of net proceeds from the show will be donated to the Thompson Education Foundation’s Homeless Assistance Fund. The fund provides a variety of services for homeless students and their families. As in previous years, art scholarships to local graduating high school seniors will be awarded with funds generated from the show. Artwork from these students will be on display during the exhibit.

CUBA IN TRANSITIONTHE PHOTO MOSAICS OF MARK GUGLIELMO

May 31 – July 29, 2018GREEN ROOM

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 31, 5 – 7 pmPublic Art Dedication: 5:30 pm

Cuba in Transition is an exhibition of large-scale photo mosaic murals by Massachusetts-based artist Mark Guglielmo. Each mosaic measures 5 to 15 feet long and is handmade by taping together hundreds, sometimes

thousands, of individual 4x6 photographs. Neither a computer nor Photoshop are used.

Guglielmo visited Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa in July, 2015 and Havana and Viñales in February, 2016 before President Obama's landmark trip to Cuba in March, 2016, the first by a sitting US President in 88 years. In February, 2017, Guglielmo returned to the island, this time to Cienfuegos and Trinidad de Cuba, just two months

after the death of Fidel Castro. An homage to Cuba at this historic moment, this project chronicles a dynamic and rich culture full of heart and soul, melded in the crucible of isolation: geographically, economically, and politically.

This exhibit coincides with a site-specific photo mosaic by Mark

Guglielmo, created for the City of Loveland public art collection. The

dedication for this artwork will be Thursday, May 31 at 5:30 pm during

the opening reception at the Museum.

JAUNE QUICK-TO-SEE-SMITHIN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MY ANCESTORS

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith is one of the finest indigenous talents in the United States. Smith is an artist with extraordinary aesthetic, intellectual, and curatorial achievements to her credit. She mines her cross-cultural experience and Salish-Kootenai identity, and spans cultures with powerful, idiosyncratic results of high aesthetic caliber. Few Native artists have worked with such grace, inventiveness, and aesthetic success between cultures and art worlds. Smith has an international reputation with a strong, clear body of work. She has earned her leading standing among women artists and Native American artists while simultaneously aligning both of these often still marginalized groups more closely with the mainstream art world.Including 44 paintings and works on paper from the artist’s collection, Yellowstone Art Museum’s permanent collection, and other private collectors, this exhibition will examine recurrent themes in Smith’s body of work including conflict, compassion, peace, the cycle of life, irony, and identity. Smith has always operated on a cusp – culturally, temporally, aesthetically, and from a gender perspective – which gives her work an attention-getting vitality, originality, and relevance. Her role in the shift toward deepening respect for Native American contemporary art in its own right has been significant. She describes herself as a “cultural arts worker.” Smith also has credits as a curator, writer, speaker, and leader in the arts.

CSU FIBERS GUILD SHOWCASEJuly 14 – September 9, 2018FOOTE GALLERYOpening Reception:Friday, July 13, 6 – 8 pmInnovative, creative, and challenging, the Colorado State University Fibers Guild members present an exhibition that encroaches artistic limits and pushes beyond the usual boundaries of fiber arts.Fiber art is unique in that it communicates a message, emotion or meaning that goes beyond the literal meaning of the materials. The challenge of fiber arts is to coordinate the traditional use of materials with the unique way the materials contribute to the overall work of art.Fiber art has a rich and long history. With an awareness of the historical associations of fiber media, this exhibition re-categorizes its potential as an influential art form firmly within the realm of contemporary artistic pursuit.

Teacups are a decorative art that combine cultural history with a graceful and surprisingly diverse aesthetic. This exhibition of teacups and other tableware dates from the mid-1800s and is primarily Japanese in origin. Each cup, with its intricate decoration, tells a story that opens the door to another time and culture. Inspired by the designs portrayed on these objects, textiles on loan from Avenir Museum at Colorado State University will provide a full sensory experience that makes this beautiful collection come to life.
