President’s Column
By Evan Sheesley, PE, ENV SP, M. ASCE, Seattle Section President
Thank you for a wonderful year
Fellow ASCE Seattle Section members, it has been an
honor to serve as the President of the Section this
past year. I am constantly amazed by the ambition
and the level of activity of our members. Here are
just a few of the things ASCE Seattle did that this
past year.
Rebuilding Together: Sponsored a house in Seattle
and organized volunteers to renovate a house for a
family in need. This is an annual event for that goes back several years.
Engineers Without Borders: Partnered with and donated to this
respected organization who improves the quality of life for communities
around the world.
Mentors: Our Younger Member Forum is a highly active group who
organize many events from students in the area. The annual Popsicle
Stick Bridge Competition is one way in which they continue to teach the
younger generation about the profession.
Sustainability Advocates: Hosted a dinner program with Doug Sereno
who taught ASCE members about sustainable infrastructure.
Geotechnical Experts: Organized several programs and short courses on
state-of-the-art geotechnical design, regional disaster preparedness
issues, and lectures by nationally renowned engineers.
There are many other local actives and events that I do not have the space
to mention here. Also not mentioned is the good work our members do at
a national level.
As our new leadership takes the reins in October I am inspired by their
energy and ideas. Kelli Dean has set goals for increased focus on
mentorship. A big way in which ASCE hopes to support mentorship and
inspire the younger generation this year is through an IMAX film they are
producing called “Dream Big.” The world premiere is coming this
February. Be on the lookout for more information and opportunities to be
involved in this event locally.
This year is going to be fun with lots of opportunities to get involved. I
encourage you to continue to volunteer, come to membership meetings, or
take that next step toward a leadership role in ASCE Seattle.
Hope to see you at the next membership meeting!
Sincerely,
Evan

If you are
interested in
being a mentor
for a night for
college
students, the
Puget Sound
Engineering
Council (PSEC)
needs your help! The purpose of the mentor night
activity has been to bring as many practicing engineers
together with as many students as possible. We are
trying to inspire the students, most of whom are
freshmen and sophomores as well as high school
seniors, toward a career in engineering. The mentor
night allows engineers to relay their experience in the
profession and answer questions posed by students.
The events offer an open forum where the students
visit various tables and converse with the mentors. The
mentors are asked to bring sample of their work, such
as reports, drawings, models, that will fit on a
30” by 30” tabletop for discussion with the students. In
the past, some of the events have included over 40
mentors in 17 disciplines.
Annually, events are typically held at the following
schools:
Seattle Pacific University (SPU) – October 24, 2016,
6:00 to 8:00 pm
Seattle Central College – January
North Seattle College – March
Highline College – April
Bellevue College – May
Shoreline College – May
If you are interested in participating in any of these
events and being included on the Section’s Roster of
potential volunteers please contact Paul Grant at
[email protected] for details. Please use the
following links to sign up for the SPU event:
