They choose that number of items from the supermarket items on Gameboard 44. They can split the dice number in any way they choose. For example, if they roll a 6, they could buy six of one item, six different items or two each of three different items. They tell the other players what they have chosen. Other players work out how much this would cost and write the total on a whiteboard. Players show their answers at the same time. The first player uses a calculator to check them. If anyone has a different answer, help them to work it out. Keep playing, taking turns to roll the dice and choose the items until everyone has led the game three times. www.heinemannactivemaths.co.uk

3–4 players

Gameboard 44, dice, mini-whiteboards, calculator

Aim: To work out the total cost of several items

• One player rolls a dice and says the number.

• They choose that number of items from the supermarket items on Gameboard 44. They can split the dice number in any way they choose.

For example, if they roll a 6, they could buy six of one item, six different items or two each of three different items.

• They tell the other players what they have chosen.

• Other players work out how much this would cost and write the total on a whiteboard.

• Players show their answers at the same time. The first player uses a calculator to check them. If anyone has a different answer, help them to work it out.

• Keep playing, taking turns to roll the dice and choose the items until everyone has led the game three times.

2–4 players

APM 526, Gameboard 46, colour spinner, counters in 2–4 colours, calculator

Aim: To work out savings and get three counters in a line

• Shuffle the deal cards from APM 526 and place them in a pile face down.

• Take turns to spin the colour spinner and choose an item on Gameboard 46 shown in that colour.

• Take turns to turn over a deal card. Work out how much you would save if you buy your chosen item using the deal on the card.

For example, you might save money buying one item at 50% off or you might buy several items if the deal is ‘three for the price of two’.

• Players check each other's answers, using a calculator to help.

• If you were correct, put one of your counters on your chosen item on the board.

• Keep playing, taking turns until one player has three of their counters in a straight line in any direction.
